Musicians' Union mentoring scheme for female members
The Musicians’ Union (MU) has teamed up with shesaid.so to deliver a mentoring scheme for female members, she.grows X MU. This focuses on supporting women in the industry by matching fellow musicians together to help one another grow and succeed in their careers. The Union is inviting applications from women working in a variety of areas across the industry with the aim of selecting 20 women to create 10 pairs of mentors and mentees. Each mentor and mentee will meet for a minimum of two hours per month, and have free access to bi-monthly events curated and hosted by shesaid.so on a range of topics that focus on professional development. The mentoring scheme aims to address a trend of growing concern in the music industry - of women not showing the confidence they need to fulfil their career goals. This project seeks to explore some of the drivers of this trend and to equip women to address any challenges they may face. A key part of this is ensuring that women have the opportunity to meet, learn and be motivated by positive female role models from within the same industry.
View all the MNS digital publications from links at www.musicnewsscotland.wordpress.com
MU Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Official, John Shortell says, “The idea for the mentoring scheme came directly from MU members through the Union’s democratic process, and it’s great to work with an amazing organisation like shesaid.so to deliver the scheme.
representation of females in other sectors of the industry still isn’t where it should be. “I hope that that the mentoring scheme will empower our female members by giving them a meaningful opportunity to learn from female role models who have overcome barriers in the industry, and paved the way for future generations of female musicians. The MU welcomes applications from all women – including trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people who are female-identifying – and encourages applications from BAME, disabled and LBQ women. Mentee applications will be split based on career stage and the objectives mentees wish to achieve by taking part in the scheme. The applications will then run through a series of reviews alongside mentor applications to determine the perfect pair. The Musicians’ Union represents over 30,000 musicians working in all sectors of the music business. As well as negotiating on behalf of its members with all the major employers in the industry, the MU offers a range of services for self-employed professional and student musicians of all ages. The benefits of membership include £10m public liability cover, £2,000 worth of equipment insurance, contract advice, partnership agreements, careers advice and legal assistance. shesaid.so is a global network of women in the music industry and brings together a diverse international community, comprising of women from across all sectors of the industry - from tech to record labels, PR to management, and more. With headquarters in London and LA, the shesaid.so community has 15 active chapters around the world including London, New York, Paris and Berlin. Its vision is to connect and empower marginalized communities in the music industry with a focus on women's rights.

Co-Director, Mariot Dallas, said: “On completion of our latest project, every single member of Freedom Of Mind wanted the choir to continue, as did all of the team leading it. Our choir is unique, because we’ve had specific aims from the start: to support each other to reach our creative potential, and to sing together because it makes us feel good. Group singing can, and does, change lives - the social, physical and emotional benefits are substantial. We’re able to spread joy to audiences when we perform, whether that’s in a concert hall or a care home. It’s heartwarming to see choir members who have their own challenges to deal with using their time and their musical talents to help others.” Emily Simpson, who came up with the original concept of a choir to support emotional and physical wellbeing within FDAMH, and who will help manage the new community choir, said: “These are incredibly

Leith music studio launches crowdfunding campaign after being forced out of premises You can make a donation @ www.gofundme.com/help-leith-recording-company
The owner of a popular Leith recording studio has launched a crowdfunding campaign to reopen his business, which was forced to close last year. Leith Recording Company was left homeless after Drum Property Group refused to renew the lease on its first floor studio at Stead’s Place on Leith Walk ahead of proposed demolition plans. Owner Alan Moffat was one of several small business owners forced out of the block of shops and offices which Drum wanted to knock down and replace with student flats and a hotel. In January, following strong objections from the Leith community, those plans were unanimously rejected by councillors. However, Drum has stubbornly refused to reopen the boarded-up shop units, leaving the likes of Alan no option but to find new premises elsewhere. “It’s been a really frustrating time,” Alan said. “Over the last two years we have been so proud to work with some really great local talent - from solo bagpipers to heavy metal bands. We had a successful business valued by the community. “Our ethos was all about keeping studio hire costs as low as possible so that people on modest incomes or benefits could still get their music out there. "Music making should never become the

I believe passionately that it is for everyone, irrespective of their class, background or financial status. “Unfortunately, due to Drum Property Group’s plans we were evicted in October. We repeatedly asked if we could extend our lease on a monthto-month basis just to give us time to find new premises and raise funds to kit out a new studio but Drum flatly refused. “It’s tragic to think that the room that were trading from has lain empty for the last five months. What a terrible waste.” The good news is that Alan has now found new premises at Anderson Place, near the Biscuit Factory in Edinburgh. At the launch of his crowdfunding campaign, he said: “I’m not used to asking for help, especially as this will be a commercial business that I’ll be running, but I’m asking the people of Scotland to help us get back on our feet and reopen this important community resource.” Alan plans to have a permanent ‘Wall of Fame’ in the studio’s live room where every donor’s name will appear as a thank you for their support. 'Leith Depot' Venue Fights For Survival ..... Campaigners have launched a petition to save some of Leith Walk's most popular cafes and a grassroots music venue from being forced to close. The Leith Depot bar and venue will call last orders in October unless plans drawn up by developer Drum Property Group can be overturned. Drum wanted to demolish the two-storey sandstone Stead's Place buildings, currently home to the Depot, Leith Walk Cafe, Cassia community cafe and Punjabi Junction. Over the past year, the developer has been systematically kicking tenants out when their leases expired. The Art Deco-style block once housed about 40 shops and small businesses. In January this
year, councillors unanimously rejected Drum's proposals to demolish it and build University of Edinburgh student flats. But Drum says it is determined to clear the building, which sits in a conservation area.

A spokesman for Save Leith Walk campaign, said: "Drum Property Group are hell-bent on shutting some much-loved Leith businesses. The Depot is due to shut in October and Leith Walk cafe in July. We cannot let this happen.
Fife Hyland, Drum's communications director, said: "We are currently assessing our options for the site and will not be making any of the retail or studio units available for occupation. The entire site will be vacant this year, and given our proposals for redevelopment, our estate management policies and our existing insurance arrangements, it is preferable for us to leave the units vacant, safe and secure." www.twitter.com/GroupDrum

Talisk :: Tour - 24 April - 3 May tour dates @ www.talisk.co.uk/gigs/
Mohsen Amini, current (and youngest ever) holder of BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards coveted ‘Musician of the Year’ title will head out on the road with Scotland’s celebrated Talisk trio in April.
Their debut album Abyss was shortlisted for Album of the Year at the 2016 Scots Trad Music Awards but they came of age with 2018’s Beyond, bursting with their dynamic, feelgood, slickly crafted, self-penned tunes. The esteemed Songlines magazine gave it a 5* ‘Top of the World’ review, praising the band as “incredibly infectious and endearing –fresh, invigorating, accomplished and playfully frisky.”
The nine date tour (April 24-May 3) which opens in the Scottish Highlands and ends at Edinburgh’s Queens Hall, will see the Glasgowbased concertina maestro, ‘splendidly expressive’ fiddler Hayley Keenan and gifted guitarist Graeme Armstrong showcasing their latest acclaimed album Beyond, released last year, as well as new material. Described by Glasgow Herald as ‘a rockin’ powerhouse’ Talisk are one of the most exciting acts on the UK folk scene, renowned for their innovative, high energy instrumental music. In just five years they have pinned themselves firmly on the acoustic music map, winning the 2015 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and the 2017 Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Folk Band of the Year’ gong as well as being nominated for the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Horizon title – for best emerging act. They have won over festival audiences around the world from Denmark’s Tonder to WOMAD, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Milwaukee Irish Festival and Canada’s Celtic Colours.
Fuelled by their global travels, the frenetic, driving rhythms, vibrancy and versatility were tempered with soothing, gentle textures as they took listeners on a roller coaster journey from Montreal to Ohio, Serbia to Nova Scotia and home to Scotland. The track Farewell saw the addition of vocals provided by some of UK folk’s biggest names, working as a huge choral collective. The pedigree of this folk/trad trio is undeniable and their live dates unmissable. Opening on April 24 at Ullapool’s Ceilidh Place the tour will take Talisk to Cumbria, Cornwall, Lancashire, Oxfordshire, Wales and London’s St John on Bethnal Green 19th century church.

JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK Sae Will We Yet album / cd / Release Date: out now
John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in. scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang
JON BUDWORTH Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore album / cd / Release Date: out now
This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

With 6 producers and 9 musicians across 12 tracks, ULTRAS is the brainchild of songwriter Gav Prentice, formerly of euphoric pop duo Over the Wall. PAUL ANDERSON
AULD NEW HEIDS
Land and Sea
The High Summit
AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1
After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com
