Jessica Danz is an award-winning performer and composer, bringing together contemporary classical and folk-noir elements in an experimental, virtuosic style.

Known for her finely crafted, haunting songwriting, she writes and performs solo material for combinations of voice, violin and piano, as well as creating ensemble works and live scores for theatre, dance and silent film. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Jessica began piano lessons at the age of seven and violin lessons the following year. She was accepted into full time tertiary study at the WA Conservatorium of Music at the age of fifteen, majoring on the violin and continuing to study the piano privately. Completing her degree at the University of Western Australia, Jessica was awarded the Edith Cowan prize for most outstanding performance graduate, the Vose Concerto Prize, and was a National String Finalist in the ABC Young Performers Competition. In 1999 she was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Advanced Performance Programme at the Australian National Academy of Music, then going on to explore a wide range of freelance work including solo and chamber music, recording, improvising, teaching and composing. In 2002 Jessica turned more seriously to composition, writing a series of solo works, and creating ensemble works for the Perth-based Pi Ensemble. Mosquito War Dance was premiered at the Perth Concert Hall in 2003, and in 2004 Jessica completed her first solo album, touring the works in Australia, Japan, Germany, Denmark and Italy. Between 2005 and 2009, Jessica performed extensively as a chamber musician, and worked in theatre as a performer and composer, receiving a Green Room Award in 2008 for Best Sound Design in Independent Theatre. She has also worked with a diverse range of chamber ensembles, including Duo Ipkendanz-Yong, the Pi Ensemble and the Yarra Trio. In 2009 she was awarded the Corinna d’Hage Mayer Memorial Scholarship at Melbourne University, completing a Master of Music Performance in 2010. She then spent several years focusing on the further development of her visual art practice, undertaking residencies and exhibiting locally and nationally.

By 2014 Jessica began to return to music and performance, travelling through Europe and Scandinavia in 2015 and 2016 to undertake residencies and skills development, and documented a series of live performances in locations as diverse as mountains, sailing ships, sea caves and ancient churches. Moving to Scotland in 2017, Jessica was based in the Outer Hebrides, where she was commissioned by An Lanntair’s Faclan Festival to create a live piano score for the early Icelandic documentary Ísland í Lifandi Myndum. The film and recorded score were then installed as part of the 2018 exhibition SSA & VAS TOGETHER at the Royal Scottish Academy. A recent recipient of a Creative Scotland Muriel Spark 100 grant, Jessica is currently writing a new work for violin and string quartet inspired by a selection of Spark’s poetry, which will be premiered in November at the Scottish Poetry Library. Other 2018 projects include the release of two solo albums and the development of a chamber opera. www.jessicadanz.com www.twitter.com/Jessica_Danz www.facebook.com/jessicadanzmusic

Touch, Edinburgh International Festival and Leith Theatre present:

'After

Show' celebrating

Leith Theatre’s legacy and supporting its bright future Inspired by the unique musical history of Leith Theatre, independent agency Touch (the creative studio behind the acclaimed Welcome World and Light on the Shore campaigns) has created a series of hanging banners, each a response to one of the acts that have played at the venue over the years (from its heyday in the 1970s through to its recent renaissance). Taking cues from community banners and Leith’s tradition of artist murals, this will be a visual celebration of Leith Theatre’s proud musical heritage, from Thin Lizzy’s careerdefining early performances to AC/DC’s electrifying 1976 show, from Anna Meredith’s intoxicating compositions to Young Fathers’ triumphant gig on home turf earlier this year. A tightly-curated collection of souvenir merchandise will complement this exhibit, including Riso prints, tote bags and limitedrun tee-shirts, not only giving gig-goers a unique memento of their Light on the Shore experience but also raising funds - with all profits raised going back towards the ongoing

transformation of this historic venue. After Show runs at Leith Theatre, 28-30 Ferry Road, Leith until 26 August. www.facebook.com/LeithTheatre www.thetouchagency.co.uk/aftershow www.eif.co.uk/whats-on/lightontheshore

MULL HISTORICAL SOCIETY :: album - Wakelines release date :: 21 September - pre-order @ https://xmr.lnk.to/wakelines ‘Wakelines’ is the new album from the Mull Historical Society and is released on 21 September on Xtra Mile Recordings. Produced by the Mercury Award-winning songwriter and Brit Award-winning Producer Bernard Butler, this is the songwriter and author Colin MacIntyre’s eighth album and was recorded in London at Butler’s studio. Listen to the lead and title track of the album @ www.youtu.be/c0aOIz1oHe4 Colin MacIntyre is an awardwinning musician, producer, author and playwright. He has released eight acclaimed albums to date, most notably under the name Mull Historical Society, having achieved two UK Top 20 albums and four Top 40 singles, since his Gold-selling debut album, 'Loss'. Colin explains “This is my eighth album, but it feels all about firsts. About going back. The first song I wrote for the album was ’14 Year Old Boy’. It tells the story of my first electric guitar being waded ashore to the isle of Mull, held high above the waves by my father, Kenny Macintyre. It was a Fender Telecaster guitar. Whenever I play the guitar even now I still expect an electric shock,

to be plugged into the mainland, to be the 14 year-old boy again with his dreams, his sketched stageplots”. This album is also the first time Colin has worked with someone like Bernard Butler. “I had a feeling about the album that I needed to get somewhere new – it was Bernard who realised what I was saying was I needed to get under my skin, lay myself bare. I’ve long admired Bernard and I feel that he has left some of him on here too. To have him performing so much on the album is an added bonus! The album title ‘Wakelines’ in part refers to the child inside when I would wake early to watch as my father left the island for his weekly work at the BBC back in the city. He didn’t know I was watching. I missed him dreadfully. The songs are about family, and home, and how home, and islands, dreams, travel. Fittingly, we recorded the album in Bernard’s home in London and that has left its mark too – it just all felt right. Fitted. But it is also about people on the move in a global sense, families being forced to leave their homes due to war. Migration, and how “home” travels, have been themes across much of my recent work. In both music and words it has been the most creative time I’ve ever had.” This is his first release in over 2 years, but he hasn’t been procrastinating in the studio. Following his first novel in 2015 ‘The Letters of Ivor Punch’ – which went on to win the Edinburgh International Book Festival First Book Award – he has now adapted it for the stage and has just released two new books. A memoir about his childhood growing up on the Isle of Mull entitled ‘The Boy In The Bubble’ which is his contribution to the W&N Books ‘Hometown Tales – Highlands & Hebrides’ series of original tales by regional writers. There is also his first children’s picture book ‘The Humdrum Drum’ (Little Door Books) about an orchestra drum, promoting togetherness and teamwork, which comes with an accompanying CD of original related songs and audiobook from Colin. DEAN OWENS :: single + USA Tour single release date :: 17 August @ http://smarturl.it/ElvisWMB

After the Edinburgh Fringe Dean Owens will be heading to USA for a short tour which includes Albino Skunk Festival in South Carolina and a headline slot at the prestigious Levitt Shell in Memphis, TN – the outdoor stage where Elvis Presley played his first paid gig. Dean released his song 'Elvis Was My Brother' (from his Southern Wind album) as a digital single on 17 August (the day after 41st anniversary of Elvis’s death), and a brand new video. The song is based on a true story, and celebrates what being a music fan means to the fan - both in the story of the song, and the video, compiled from Super8 footage riffling thro

Dean's back pages of his travels round the USA, including sitting at the recording desk at Sun Studios, paying tribute to Johnny Cash in his old house in Dyess, and much more. Dean: The song was inspired by a dear friend who told me how he had been raised by his mother, and didn’t really know his dad. He moved around a lot as a kid and found comfort in some old cassette tapes. The one he loved most was an old Elvis Presley tape. He said Elvis felt like the only male figure in his life. His friend, his brother. I’m over the moon about the idea of playing this in Memphis, on the same stage where Elvis started out. Dean (left) at Sam Phillips Recording Studios in Memphis with Sam's son Jerry, pictured in the inner sanctum, which is the private bar where Elvis, Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis (among many) used to drop in and hang out in the 60s. Dean was invited on a private tour of the studios last year, and introduced to Jerry, who then regaled Dean with stories. The studios still function as a recording studio, and are decorated exactly the same as in the 60s. Jerry even pointed out the cigarette burn on the bar counter which is attributed to Johnny Cash!

Recorded in Nashville with producer Neilson Hubbard and featuring guitar ace Will Kimbrough.

JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore

Osgarra

Sae Will We Yet

album / cd Release Date: out now

album / cd / Release Date: out now

album / cd / Release Date: out now

The debut album by Beinn Lee, OSGARRA, is a product of five years of playing, writing and arranging music, as well as bringing together a strong traditional sense of tune with modern backing to create a new and fresh sound to West Coast traditional music. OSGARRA showcases a selection of tunes and songs written and arranged by the band in both Gaelic and English alongside tunes from some of Scotland’s foremost contemporary composers of traditional music, giving a musical landscape from reflective songs to driving dance beats. Formed in 2013, Beinn Lee are rooted in the West Coast style of traditional music.

John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in.

This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang

JON BUDWORTH

THE FIRRENES

album / cd Release Date: out now

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

Land and Sea

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller. Land and Sea is the result: twelve narrative songs, their subjects ranging from the Highland Clearances to a Stromness witch who told Walter Scott a few tales.
