Schools Pipe Band Championships Set To Be Bigger Than Ever A schools piping competition which is already the biggest in the world is set to grow further. Organisers of next year’s Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships say they expect over 150 schools from across Scotland to be represented. Event organiser Patrick Gascoigne said the predicted boost is based on the number of school pupils being taught in programmes run by parent charity the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust. He said: “The work of the Trust has been growing very fast and we now have projects going in 18 council areas supporting lessons to over 2500 young people.
“We established the Championships in 2011 to offer a positive and friendly experience for players who are new to competition, and as a forum for bands at the very top of their game. We are delighted to see entries from new schools pipe bands that have been created with the Trust's help. The Trust has resources to support more state schools in Scotland to introduce piping and drumming tuition, and we invite Local Education Authorities, teachers and parents to contact us. All enquiries can be made via the website www.sspdt.org.uk” The Championships are held in Inveralmond Community High School in Livingston and entries can be made through the website www.thechampionships.org.uk

Scottish Opera’s New Primary Schools Show 1719! Commemorates The Jacobite Risings In the Spring and Summer of 2019, thousands of primary five, six and seven school pupils will rehearse and perform an opera about one of the most dramatic periods in Scottish history: the Jacobite risings.
1719! - Illustration by Jamie MacDonald
Entitled 1719!, the opera has been composed by David Munro, revised and re-orchestrated by Alan Penman with words by Allan Dunn. Pupils learn the words and songs in their classrooms with teaching materials prepared by Scottish Opera’s Education and Outreach department and then work with a team from the Company to prepare for a performance in front of classmates, friends and family. Scottish Opera’s Primary Schools Tour hits the road on 14 January in Mosshead Primary, Bearsden and will visit 50 schools around Scotland including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth and Kinross and the Highlands, until March. It continues on 16 April, touring to schools in areas including Aberdeen, the Borders, the Western Isles, Shetland and Dumfries and Galloway. 1719! travels back to a key moment in Scottish history to tell the story of the Jacobite Scots locked in a desperate struggle to restore the House of Stuart to the throne of Great Britain, while the Hanoverian King George argued with other European rulers over the lands and riches of the New World. King Philip of Spain sent troops and money to help the Jacobites in an attempt to distract the British government from this dispute. Pupils will go back in time 300 years when the Jacobites and their Spanish allies gathered in Glen Shiel for battle with King George’s forces, in what was the last close engagement of British and European troops on British soil.

The Snuts :: www.facebook.com/TheSnutsOfficial
The event was presented by Sanjeev Kohli and featured performances from Snow Patrol, Susan Boyle, The Snuts, Amy MacDonald and Kyle Falconer. Award winners not in attendance included Annie Lennox (Scottish Music Hall of Fame), The Script (Best International Artist) and Kevin Bridges (Ticketmaster Tourmaster Award). Singer songwriter Tom Grennan, who scooped the Best UK Artist Award said he was "delighted" to support the work of Nordoff Robbins. He added: "What they do with music and making lives happier is amazing. It truly is incredible. "I have never won an award for my work so I am buzzing to be here in Scotland. Adam Holmes & The Embers :: ep - 'Midnight Hour' release date :: out now @ www.adamholmesandtheembers.com/buy/ to decamp all the musicians to a flat at Edinburgh’s Riviera (aka Portobello), where they would live and breathe the music for 24 hours/day as they rehearsed, created and recorded. The aim was to “capture the moment” in the recordings, with all the rough edges and rawness. In true rock n roll tradition the original plan was short lived as complaints from the neighbours, especially about the nocturnal recording sessions, resulted in eviction after 3 days! Fortunately enough music had been laid down for Adam to complete the production process – editing, mixing, mastering.
Adam Holmes
Edinburgh-born singer/songwriter Adam Holmes is one of the brightest rising stars on the UK roots music scene, with influences from either side of the Atlantic, mixing traditional and contemporary folk with his own brand of soul and Americana. Since bursting on to the UK music scene in 2014, with his John Wood produced debut album Heirs and Graces, Adam has been developing and evolving his music on his own terms as he explores new territory and influences, playing ever bigger concert halls and stages. Twice nominated for BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, his first three albums have all been longlist nominated for the Scottish Album of the Year in 2014, 2017
and 2018. His third album Midnight Milk was recorded in one room in his Edinburgh flat, but came complete with full brass section, an eighteen voice choir and a widescreen folk/soul/ electronica production, which was influenced by a 2016 collaboration he was involved in with Adrian Utley of Portishead, Dominic Aitchison of Mogwai and Martin Green of Lau. As its name suggests, the new EP – Midnight Hour – contains thematic and musical links to that release, with Adam continuing to explore a rich reggae/hip hop vein of influential undercurrents.
Adam: “With hindsight, maybe we should have found somewhere a bit more isolated/ soundproofed! But the process was fun, and I think we’ve captured the spirit of the sessions on the recordings” With his band The Embers, Adam has drawn comparisons with classic songwriters and artists including Paul Simon, John Martyn, Bon Iver, James Taylor and Townes Van Zandt with the rhythm and blues, country and folk music textures of The Band, Neil Young and Ryan Adams and The Cardinals to play his own unique brand of Americana, with a hint of Scotland. Adam and the Embers are currently on a UK tour with all-women Swedish band, Baskery. GIGnotes ..... Monday 28 January, Soundhouse at Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.

Lau :: album - 'Midnight and Closedown' release date :: 8 February @ www.revealrecords.co.uk ‘This is music of such stunning creativity – one of most thrilling live bands, now one of most thrilling studio bands as well – what phrase, what note can possibly be coming next? ’- (Sunday Herald)
Lau :: photos by Genevieve Stevenson
Already acknowledged as thrilling live performers and folk music pioneers, Lau arrive at a new creative peak with Midnight and Closedown. The band’s 12-year recording career is resplendent with unexpected collaborations, accolades and innovative ideas.
quotes from the band members below – could suggest that the new album is Lau’s swansong. But Midnight and Closedown, Lau’s finest artistic statement to date, could equally prove to be the opening of a brave new chapter.
About that title: It comes from Seamus Heaney’s The Shipping Forecast (Faber and Faber). just for the record, he's an absolute gent.’ Aidan O’Rourke: ‘We wanted to make a Brexit album. What does that mean? The themes seemed vivid and swirling. Isolation. Fear. Giddiness. Cutting ties with allies, friends and partners. The vehemence of opinion. The shoutiness. The rise of the right. The allure of brashness in politics. The allure of romanticisation in the politics of Scotland: complicated, ever-shifting parameters of nationalism, nerves and optimism in the aftermath of the 2014 independence referendum. The sense that our collective future is hazy. We celebrated our tenth anniversary last year. It seemed like the end of a cycle; the culmination of a clear musical trajectory. This album is a synthesis of all that – of the stylistic elements we’ve arrived at after ten beautiful years together. In that sense it’s a state of the Lau nation, but it’s also a question. What comes next? For us musically, and for the society we live in. How to address these questions in music? We try to be mindful. We try to not shout. We try to listen to each other, to enjoy the stylistic differences we’ve each grown into. As a trio we don’t have to synthesize. We can recognise the vibrancy in our diversity and we can love our common ground. I wrote ‘Riad’ in Marrakech. I was on holiday in a boutique hotel – a boxed-in haven amidst the urgency and heat and desperation of the souks just outside. I thought of Scotland. I thought of our perceived haven within Brexit Britain. I thought of the fallacy of believing we can remove ourselves from the problems that are right on our doorstep. We are not immune. We must engage. In the track ‘She Put on her Headphones’, music becomes an escape, another haven. How much should we allow ourselves solace? How much should we force ourselves to confront? All this was on my mind as we went into writing our fifth studio album.’

Martin Green: ‘Every time Lau return to the studio we are a different little unit. Musically a three-piece band is wonderful thing. A triangle is a powerful shape, you can tilt it and turn it and any way up, whichever is its highest point will always be supported and grounded by two points beneath. And Lau have made much use of this power of three over the years. But three is small, and that can be insular. So we always take a fourth and in recent years a fourth we don't know know very well (except though their music). And this is tremendously exciting. This time the fourth person was the legendary John Parish. Our job as we see it, is to pass over to the John the music as we have been playing it, and his is to mould and shape it as his ear guides him. And his ear is special. He has made a Lau album that only he could make, and,

JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK Sae Will We Yet album / cd / Release Date: out now
John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in. scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang
JON BUDWORTH Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore album / cd / Release Date: out now
This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

PAUL ANDERSON
AULD NEW HEIDS
Land and Sea
The High Summit
AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1
After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com
