Beating competition including London's prestigious 'St. Harmonica Blues Club' and Manchester's 'Blue Funk Rhythm & Blues Club' this is a magnificent triumph for a club only established in 2014. Richard Tweeddale, Edinburgh Blues Club's Promotions Manager, said, 'It's remarkable, the fact that we are a not for profit club run by volunteers makes it especially gratifying. We do this because we are passionate about music and about bringing the best of the blues to Edinburgh.' 'Greatest Music Hits' Walking Tour To Launch in Edinburgh Edinburgh Music Tours will launch Edinburgh's Greatest Hits, a guided walking tour of the capital's music scene, on Saturday 16 June. Led by music journalists and musicians, the 90 minute tours tell the story of Edinburgh's music scene from the People's Festival Ceilidh in 1951 to present day hit-makers such as Young Fathers. Carefully researched, the tours are packed with great stories, fun anecdotes and a few tall tales
that illustrate the diversity of the artists who have stayed, played and made music in the Scottish capital.
Bannermans and Sneaky Pete's, the tours take in jazz, rock, pop, traditional music and even a little classical.
Designed to appeal to local residents and visitors alike, the content ranges from home-grown musical curiosities to chart-topping bands that have had global success.
Guests don't have to be massive music fans to enjoy the tours. However, there is enough detail and plenty of obscure facts to entertain the more hardcore fan.
The big names covered include The Bay City Rollers, Proclaimers and Garbage. Other names are less well known but come with great stories. For example, tour guests will hear about Jackie Dennis, Edinburgh's kilted answer to Elvis.
Edinburgh Music Tours Director Jonathan Trew said, 'Edinburgh has a colourful contemporary music scene and a long and rich history of great bands, artists and performers. By exploring the capital's past and present music venues, we aim to celebrate Edinburgh's current scene and its cultural legacy. We want these tours to stir memories of fantastic gigs as well as creating happy new memories for visitors and locals alike. Edinburgh is famous for its history, architecture and festivals. We are going to tell the remarkable story of its music.'
Some of the stories, such as The Clash at the Playhouse on The White Riot Tour mark turning points in Scotland's musical history. Other stories have less historical weight but will provoke a smile. For instance, Dizzy Gillespie employed a failsafe, if not exactly, legal technique for winning at chess during a residency at Edinburgh Playhouse. From folk music hubs like Sandy Bells and The Royal Oak to grassroots rock venues such as
The Edinburgh walks are inspired by Rip It Up The Story of Scottish Pop exhibition www.nms.ac.uk/ripitup - which opens at the National Museum of Scotland on Friday 22 June. Every guest on an Edinburgh Music Tour will receive a code giving a £5 discount on entry to the Museum's Rip It Up Exhibition. The tours are run by Eats and Beats Glasgow Limited who have also traded as Glasgow Music City Tours since 2015. Tours begin from the William Chambers statue outside the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street. They run every Saturday from 16 June at 1pm and 3pm with additional 11am tours on Saturday 4, 11, 18 and 25 August. Duration 90 minutes. Cost £14 (£12). Skipinnish single to raise money for Barra Manchester memorial It can be hard to know what to say when tragedy strikes, but Skipinnish's Angus MacPhail found the right words. In the wake of the Manchester bombing last year, Angus wrote ‘Wishing Well’, in tribute to Barra teenager Eilidh MacLeod who died in the attack. As the first anniversary of the atrocity was marked recently, the song was re-released as a charity single and reached No 24 in the main UK charts. The lines ‘Your spirit was strong, now silent your song, but your soul with the Pole Star shines on’ were also projected on to buildings at St Ann’s Square in Manchester during the There Is a Light event. Proceeds from the single will go to the “Team Eilidh” fundraising group which hopes to raise £5,000 to support the funding of a permanent memorial to the 14-year-old.

Skipinnish will headline the festival’s opening evening on Thursday, 19 July at a time of unprecedented success for the band.
Returning this year to the multi award-winning HebCelt is also something Angus is excited about: “Of all the festivals we have ever played at, HebCelt is consistently the best organised and easiest to perform at.

In September 2017 he became the first Scottish musician to officially showcase at the prestigious Americanafest in Nashville. His visit included a guest spot with the Mavericks at their “allstar” show at the Basement East… and a mention in Rolling Stone.
Dean says: “I love the freedom of solo shows, when you don’t have to work to a set list. Fans usually wait till the end of a show, then say “I was hoping you’d play…” and by then it’s too late. This way they’re involved from the start. I just hope I can still remember all the words if they come up with some real oldies!”

Both the duo and the self titled album have been getting a great reaction – including a live session on BBC Radio Scotland’s Travelling Folk and being Featured Album of the Week on Iain Anderson Show - a perfect blend of old and new, with a crossfire of pithy banter. Dean’s final project (for the moment) is Cash Back (Songs I Learned From Johnny) which he was invited to bring to the reinvigorated Fringe by the Sea festival (North Berwick). Based on his popular CD of the same name (released on Drumfire Records), Cash Back played to a full house and rave reviews at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe. Dean will again be joined on stage by guitarist Craig Ross and his former Felsons buddy Kevin McGuire, as the Celtabilly Allstars, as they tip their hats to one of America’s most revered musicians. With songs written, covered and inspired by The Man in Black, this will be a fun night, in a gorgeous spiegeltent, rocking by the Bass Rock, just across the water from the place which Johnny Cash himself was proud to recognise as his ancestral homeland.

PAUL ANDERSON
AULD NEW HEIDS

The High Summit
AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1
After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com

THE REVELLERS
JUDE ADAMS
The Seas Between Us
Skeletons
This Girl, This Woman
My new album The Seas Between Us is out now! It has twelve old Scots and Gaelic songs, many of which I’ve been singing since I was a little girl. It was recorded and produced by Matheu Watson, who also played several instruments (guitars, fiddle, mandolin, prepared instruments, synth, organs, etc.) and features Fraser Fifield (prepared whistle, lowland pipes, kaval), Jim Rattigan (French horn), Ben Cashell (cello) and Findlay Napier (voice). It was mixed by Leo Abrahams and mastered by Iain Hutchison.
Hailing from The Shetland Islands, The Revellers are a seven-piece juggernaut, that combine fiddle, mandolin and tenor banjo with heavy metal, punk and alternative rock rhythm section. The end result is something which has been nicknamed by onlookers as ‘Heavy Folk Music’ or ‘Viking Metal’. The band release their second album this autumn – ‘Skeletons’ with Tim Matthew (Lau/ Mystery Juice) at the helm and cameo appearances from some of Shetland’s finest musicians (including Arthur Nicholson and Kris Drever) and Danish multiinstrumentalist, Perry Stenback.

This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting."

The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Stories Untold
Crossing Borders
To Be Free
Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.
‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.
To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.
