Glasgow Bands One Step Closer To New York City Performance As Winners Of Battle Of The Bands 2019 Announced! Offering Scottish aspiring artists a once in a lifetime opportunity, Hard Rock Cafe Glasgow recently played host to the global 2019 Battle of the Bands competition as 24 performances took place around the world in six host cities. The thrilling night saw The Asuras, Sara ‘N’ Junbug, Moonlight Zoo and Chris Greig & The Merchants take to the stage to battle it out for two regional spots in the competition that would take them one step closer to an all-expenses paid trip to New York City, winning a whopping $15,000 cash prize and performance time in front of top music industry executives. With Moonlight Zoo and Sara 'N' Junbug claiming the coveted prize and presented with 1,000 dollar cheque by host Jim Gellatly and Ferid Thabet, HRC Glasgow’s General Manager, the competition moves into its next stage, where Hard Rock Cafe fans around the world decide who reaches the finals. Speaking about their win, Moonlight Zoo said: "There's only one thing to say right now WOOOOOOO!!"

The Geddes Peterson Foundation, which carries forward the legacy of John Maxwell Geddes, one of Scotland’s leading classical composers, is calling on classical composers based in Scotland to submit work and enter to win this year’s award. Upon John's death in September 2017 a lifelong colleague and friend, Hal Peterson, who lives and works in California, contacted SMC to offer a financial donation in John’s name. Together with Hal, the SMC and the Geddes family formed the Geddes Peterson

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra NEW WAVES: ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM / FATS WALLER Arranged, orchestrated and conducted by Bill Dobbins featuring Brian Kellock, Irini Arabatzi, Mario Caribe, & Tommy Smith
May 2019 arrives in Scotland with a warm blast of bewitching bossa nova, sultry samba, and sizzling piano jazz from the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. Conducted by guest arranger and orchestrator Bill Dobbins, they will be joined by guests Irini Arabatzi (vocals), Mario Caribe (guitar/vocals), and Brian Kellock (piano), with Tommy Smith featured as soloist on tenor saxophone during the Jobim set. Together, they perform music that is worlds apart, yet shares a common cause. Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) and Chicago piano genius Fats Waller (1904-1943) were separated by a generation and stylistically very different, but they both made music to lift the spirit, warm the heart, and soothe the soul. The soft, opaque and beguiling songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim never lose their charismatic appeal or their elliptical charm. They may seem as
though they are about to be carried away on a summer breeze, but they are held tightly together by sinewy rhythms and precise vocals.
Scotland’s resident Brazilian vocal, guitar master, Mario Caribe is our special guest alongside Irini Arabatzi, who will sing in the original Portuguese. Audiences can expect lots of musical punctuation around Jobim’s word-perfect songs, not least from the saxophone of Tommy Smith and piano of Bill Dobbins. The repertoire of Fats Waller is often re-visited, but rarely explored with the due diligence it deserves. Brian Kellock is one of a handful of musicians who truly connects to Waller’s legacy. A lifelong devotee, scholar and student of Waller’s music, few pianists are more qualified than Brian to bring fresh interpretations to Waller’s challenging innovations. Often considered little more than light entertainment, Waller was nevertheless very successful, and he composed several tunes that became longstanding jazz standards. It’s time though to reset perceptions and listen while the SNJO with Brian Kellock reveal the piano artistry of one of the world’s finest jazz instrumentalists, Fats Waller. Our guest conductor is Bill Dobbins, who as arranger and orchestrator also, brings his sure touch again to elegant and elevated interpretations of outstanding and enduring jazz. This time, his great insight as a cultured musician and academic is brought to bear on some of the most ebullient and enduring jazz music of all time. Tall, tanned and timeless, the Girl From Ipanema walks through jazz history humming a One Note Samba and the slyly seductive ‘Desafinado’. The SNJO and their special guests follow in her footsteps, and light up the dancefloor on Fats Waller’s Jitterbug Waltz; with Brian Kellock soloing on Waller classics such as Honeysuckle Rose and Ain’t Misbehavin’. Fats Waller was a wonderful musician, who sadly received no awards during his lifetime. The Longlist is then whittled down to a Shortlist of 10 albums, one of which will be chosen by music fans via an online public vote and the others decided by The SAY Award judging panel. Multi-award winning fiddler, composer and producer Aidan O’Rourke (Lau) releases his new double album “365:Volume Two” on 9 August via Reveal Records.

The EIBF describes the project as “a piece about storytelling: about how to tell stories without saying too much.” Designed by inventor Yann Seznec in collaboration with design team Old School Fabrications, the installation is a piece of art in itself, beautifully crafted from wood and brass with no digital screens in sight. It allows up to six people at a time to browse and listen to the stories and music using headphones, maybe stopping at their birthday or a day with special meaning.
The 25-track deluxe double CD and story booklet follows last year’s sold-out “365: Volume One” with another beautifully sparse and emotive collection recorded with Mercury Prize nominee Kit Downes (ECM). Bold, tender, full of old truths and distilled modern wit, “365:Volume 2” is built on the beauty of the miniature. It’s a collaboration between artists steeped in tradition but constantly breaking new ground. In 2013, James Robertson – one of Scotland’s leading authors – wrote a short story every day for a year. It became an enchanting, roaming collection of fairytales and memories and provocations; that was only the beginning. A couple of years later, Aidan O’Rourke wrote a tune every day in response to the stories. The result is a major new body of 365 tunes – a significant addition to the Scottish traditional music canon. “365: Volume Two” presents highlights from the heart of the project. Aidan’s playing and writing are renowned for deep lyricism and off-kilter twists, here paired with kaleidoscopic harmonies of Kit Downes on harmonium and piano. Aidan says: "This music is about storytelling – how to tell stories without saying too much. James Robertson wrote a story every day for a year, and each one was exactly 365 words. It began as an exercise but soon it became an essential ritual. James found the discipline

Scotland's alt.blues troubadour Dave Arcari teams up with Canadian singer/ songwriter Sean Oliver for one-off double-bill show at The Record Factory, Byres Road, Glasgow on Sunday 12 May at 7.30pm. The two musicians originally met while playing at the Muddy Roots Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee a few years ago and have kept in touch ever since. Arcari – who will have just returned from a run of shows in Belgium and
The Netherlands – explains: “Sean got in touch to say he was visiting Scotland…and although it was short notice to arrange a show together, we were fortunate to be able to get the Record Factory for the night. Expect an edgy mix of original blues, country, Americana and roots material.” Arcari’s latest release – Whisky Trail – reveals another side to the songwriter. Known mainly for his slashing slide guitar work this release features his banjo playing…and a mellower side to his songwriting and performance. It’s available to stream and download via Spotify, Apple Music and all digital services. “Actually, the banjo has featured in my live set for a while, but I only had a couple of songs on it,” says Arcari. “And while they (Still Friends and Good Moonshine) have become crowd favourites, I felt it was becoming too predictable that I’d play these songs whenever I picked up the banjo. “So I was keen to come up with a new banjo song that was a little different. This one is based on the story of Glengoyne single malt whisky….my local distillery. There’s a few more in the pipeline for both slide guitar and banjo.” Arcari’s last full length release – Live at Memorial Hall – hit the streets last autumn on double 180g coloured vinyl and digipak CD as well as download/streaming via iTunes, Spotify, Amazon MP3 and the usual digital services. JON BUDWORTH Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. Glasgow’s longest running music festival and music fans across the city won’t be far from unmissable live jazz with a diverse and exciting programme. The Glasgow International Jazz Festival was founded in 1987, when Glasgow was bidding to become the European City of Culture for 1990. The City had studied the competition and worked out that all major cities in Europe had a jazz festival. If they had one, then so should Glasgow. Early bird tickets for Oban Live 2019, Argyll’s biggest outdoor music concert, are to go on sale on Saturday November 10, the event team has announced. The event, started in 2016 by one of Scotland’s finest musical exports Skerryvore, takes place on June 7 and 8 next year at Mossfield Stadium in Oban, Argyll, on the west coast of Scotland.
Advance weekend tickets for next year’s Hebridean Celtic Festival, to be held from 18-20 July 2019, are available from the festival website. Day tickets and those for opening shows, late night activities and community events in Lewis and Harris go on sale next year when the full festival programme is finalised.
