Scottish Music Charity is 18 years old and launches 'The Memphis ‘Lullaby Legacy’ When she was five-years-old she had a dream to meet ‘the King’… He did however become her first muse. Artist, Miss L.A. McConnell MBE founded the inspirational ‘The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Charitable Trust’, which is Scottish based, with charitable status in May 2000. The charitable Trust endeavours to bring music into the lives of dreamers of all generations who are disadvantaged through life-limiting conditions, disabled, or who may suffer from the effects of poverty. Although that little girls dream did not come true, hundreds upon hundreds of ‘musical dreams’ (over 400) have come true and created unique ‘How Great Thou Art’ group projects (designed to inspire musical dreams) across the musical spectrum for over 6450 beneficiaries in Scotland. About The Memphis ‘Lullaby Legacy’ ..... On 8 January 1946 Gladys Presley took Elvis Aaron Presley to the Tupelo Hardware Store and bought a gift for his 11th birthday. It was a gift that would change the course of musical and cultural history – an acoustic guitar. On 8 January 2018 in honour of Elvis Presley’s legacy, Miss McConnell founded The Memphis ‘Lullaby Legacy’ which she named after her first book, the international critically acclaimed The Memphis Lullaby. The ‘Lullaby Legacy’s’ purpose is to gift guitars to bring music into the lives of dreamers, who are disadvantaged; and use the power of music to broaden horizons, realise potential, bring hope; and keep the spirit of rock 'n' roll alive. The Founder who sponsored the musical dream said, “The stars aligned when Elvis Presley bought his first guitar with the help of Gladys Presley. In homage, I wanted to launch ‘Lullaby Legacy’ and make the first musical dream come true for a student in Elvis’ old school in Tupelo. A musical salute to Elvis Presley on his birthday.” ‘The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Charitable Trust’ made history as Milam Schools 6th grader Zac Barr was presented with the Number 1 ‘Lullaby Legacy’ acoustic guitar at Tupelo Hardware Store. Zac has been awakened by music this year. His music teacher, Teletha Newell, identified a worthy student for this occasion as she saw this first-hand when the violin was introduced in class saying “Zac has shown tremendous improvement in his ability to focus and has demonstrated an excellent work ethic. Zac has also flourished in his participation in afterschool activities. He has had a keen interest in wanting to play the guitar and now that dream is being realised, thanks to this Scottish

Trust.” To add to the special occasion Elvis’ childhood friend Guy Harris presented the guitar and told Zac the story of Elvis receiving his guitar on that special day in 1946. Zac said “I felt excited and emotional. I always wanted a guitar and I was really thrilled that they chose me.” Milam Elementary School Principal Paul Moton said “It’s always gratifying to see others take a genuine interest in the students here at Milam. Zac is a great kid and this is an awesome opportunity for him. I look forward to partnering with this great organization in order to make musical dreams come true for future students.” Once ‘The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Charitable Trust’ has funds/sponsorship in place, more guitar musical dreams can become a reality for individuals, and create guitar music libraries for schools in Glasgow, Tupelo and Memphis. Each guitar will be unique with the Logo decal and a gold plated sign with the guitars number. Tupelo Hardware Store who contributed to the cause said “Thank you for making a positive impact in our community.” We would like to offer a hundred thank you’s to all that helped make this first musical dream come true in America: Guy Harris, Tupelo Public School District: Mary Ann Plasencia, Ryan Coon, Milam School Principal Paul Moton, Music Teacher Teletha Newell, Tupelo Hardware Store: George Booth III, Connie Tullos and a special thank you to Zac Barr.” A Motion was lodged in the Scottish Parliament to congratulate the Trust 18th Birthday and recent royal approval. In the Birthday Honours for 2017, Her Majesty The Queen appointed L.A. a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, an honour bestowed for 20 years voluntary services to charity. “I am honoured that Her Majesty the Queen has appointed me an MBE. It has been my privilege to make a ‘symphony of dreams’ come true for dreamers in Scotland.” The prestigious medal was presented on behalf of Queen Elisabeth by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge at the Investiture in the Ballroom at Buckingham Palace. Asked about receiving the MBE insignia and royal warrant she said, “As the orchestra played, I walked into the Ballroom of Buckingham Palace, I felt I was in a Fairytale, but then I met a real Prince… After I received my award, I spoke to the Prince about ‘the King...’” Elvis’ legacy of generosity to help others continues with The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ charities work - “When I was a child I was a dreamer.” – Elvis Presley

Free bagpipes on offer to young learners in Scottish schools The biggest free bagpipe loan scheme in the world is being set up by a Scottish schools’ charity - the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust. The instruments are being loaned out for up to three years at a time to help boost the number of youngsters taking up Scotland’s national instrument. Already over 160 sets costing about £700 each are being played by pupils in schools from Orkney to the Borders – eventually 500 bagpipes will be available for loan at a total cost of over £350,000. The initiative is coming from the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust which is involved in 18 of Scotland’s council areas supporting teaching of more than 2500 pupils each week. Trust chief executive Alexandra Duncan said: “We recognise that the big cost of pipes is a barrier to people progressing with the instrument – hence the free loan scheme.
Pupils at Tynecastle High School and Craiglockhart Primary School receive their new pipes, loaned by the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust. mns review :: report + photos by Katy Whitelaw
Richard Ashcroft
- "an intense and erratic rock and roll show"
read Katy's full review and follow her blog @ www.mixtapemum.wordpress.com/2018/11/02/richard-ashcroft-barrowlands/
The atmosphere is electric as a roadie walks on to place a glass mug of what looks to be steaming hot lemon water on stage. He places it next to a bizarrely-placed mannequin sat posed on the edge of the drum riser donned in RA merchandise. Ashcroft, the epitome of modern rock and roll in an era of sanitised top 40 acts, is clearly up for the adoration and looks pumped as he bounds on stage adorned in a shades (which remain on for the full set) and a sequin jacket which dazzles in the lights, and launches swiftly into Hold On, Sonnet and Break the Night With Colour. The voice still sounds incredible and Ashcroft is clearly not just here to pick up a pay check, he sings as if he feels every note reverberate
through every sinew in his body. In a show reflecting Ashcroft’s new album title ‘Natural Rebel’, the singer provided great entertainment, surprise and mirth between songs by breaking into a rendition of Elvis’s ‘That’s Alright Mamma’, lighting up a cigarette, cutting off History mid song because “that’s enough of that”, digressing into a tale about “a bird in WH Smith at the airport when I was buying cigarettes”, and a rant about “junkies”. Erratic but most definitely rock and roll.
“I want to dedicate this to my aunt who died a few weeks ago and for my nan. This is the first album she hasn’t heard,” he says before prowling the stage quietly for what seemed like minutes before playing Drugs Don’t Work. In true rock and roll style he defies the smoking ban and lights up a cigarette “Let’s take the roof off Glasgow. Come On!” and then launches into Lucky Man.
www.richardashcroft.com
New song ‘Surprised By The Joy’ and ‘Song For The Lovers’ (from Alone With Everybody) were greeted with euphoria from fans who then pushed to the front of the stage when Ashcroft jumped down into the pit during ‘Glorious You’, which contained a long funky guitar solo. Ashcroft, clearly swept away by the adoration during the set in one of his favourite venues, repeatedly fist pumped his chest telling the crowd “I love you lot!” to the delight of the Barrowland’s crowd. At moments Ashcroft seemed completely overcome, pausing with his head cradled in his hands. During ‘That’s How Strong’ the emotion from him was intense and the voice raw.

JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK Sae Will We Yet album / cd / Release Date: out now
John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in. This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way. JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang
JON BUDWORTH
The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.
Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

PAUL ANDERSON
AULD NEW HEIDS
Land and Sea
The High Summit
AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1
After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com

Aberfeldy 2-3 November
Edinburgh's Christmas
A wee cultural, music, poetry, drama and arts festival in the wonder of Highland Perthshire. The festival takes place the first weekend in November every year and the majority of it is held in Aberfeldy Townhall. The Line-up focuses on bands and music on the Scottish music scene that are maybe under represented but still have a good following or have had critical acclaim and played on radio stations like BBC6. Although that's not always the case nor an exclusive ruling on who we invite but we do try to include bands that have made an impact on the music scene in Scotland in that year. Ian Rankin has helped to curate for a number of years now and always has a good handle on what bands are worthy of a listen. We would love for you to come along - hang out and have a grin or a gin - laugh, cry and just feel the rhythm. Help us Aberfeldy residents get through the winter by joining us for a bit of a party. And then we will keep you (not forever) but in the cellar to keep the hounds happy until May/Juneish time. www.aberfeldyfestival.co.uk
