About the piece: The first setting of this piece (for treble voices) was written for my high school director who would typically select a different setting of the Ave Maria during the holiday season for our annual "Madrigal Feaste" performances. Though I was not raised Catholic, the ancient text always struck me with a sense of awe. Who was this woman — a virgin pure of heart and beloved by God — what was her story? Doing my best to stay true to the prayer aspect of the text, I wanted to also capture a small sense of her story here on earth. The holiness of Mary should be felt throughout the piece, but particularly apparent on "Sancta Maria, Mater Dei" (m.21-26). This brief yet powerful moment is crucial in connecting her mortal existence to her sacred one, while then leading into the more prayer-like segment on "ora pro nobis peccatoribus" (m.27-34). The ambiguous interpretation of "nunc" (m.35) should be felt and discussed between director and ensemble. My intention here was to create a brief moment of the present-day, perhaps encompassing whatever strife or hardship we may endure before our inevitable passing.
About the composer: From Chino Hills, California, Joshua Himes (b.1987) is an accomplished composer, performer and music director. His compositions are frequently performed nationally and around the world by acclaimed vocal ensembles; such as the Norwegian female choir Cantus, the Camerata Lacunensis choir of Spain, Sjaella of Germany, and the Philippine Madrigal Singers. Beyond choral music, Joshua is a freelance composer for film and staged theatre productions as well as a social worker for troubled youth in Southern California.
