Come, Come, Ye Saints for Baritone Solo, SATB (divisi) and Piano Lyric: William Clayton Music: Nathan Howe
Notes: My first Mormon pioneer ancestors crossed the great plains of the United States in a mid-1950s Chevrolet sedan. My grandparents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while in the U.S. Air Force, and they eventually settled in Colorado. While I may not have a genealogic connection to the first pioneers to sing this text, Come, Come, Ye Saints does not belong exclusively to the Utah settlers of the past. With gratitude, I add my musical impressions to this timeless lyric. May we each come to Him who inspired this song and its countless singers over the decades. In this setting, the pianist is not simply an accompanist, but has an equal share in the expressive demands of the piece. The tempo should be flexible, and chords may be rolled at the pianist's discretion. The original choral version of this setting was composed for Glenn Gordon's Reflections on Come, Come, Ye Saints project, and was premiered by the Melbourne Chamber Choir in 2009. Nathan Howe December 2008 (Solo version 2015)
