“Full Fathom Five” is Paul Carey’s imaginative setting for SATB/piano of Shakespeare’s eerie text from The Tempest was commissioned by the ACDA Women’s Choir Commissioning Consortium, led at the time by Iris Levine. The piece would be perfect for any Shakespeare-themed concert, or any concert with a water, the sea, or nature theme.
The richly-colored piano part employs the entire range of the keyboard in order to represent the depth of the ocean as well as its roiling waves, while the voices intone Ariel’s strange text, alternating between hushed moments and dramatic climaxes. The piece is of medium difficulty. A few sopranos are needed to sing a high B flat at the climax of the piece.
An SSA/piano version of the score is also available.
