In Act One of The Tempest, Prospero's bound spirit, Ariel, sings a song which purposely misleads Fernando into believing that his father, Alonso, died when their ship was wrecked in the storm. Ariel's words, motivated by promise of eventual release from her servitude to Prospero, certainly do convince Fernando due to their strange images. Ariel is responsible for much of the action of the play, including its happy ending. In my setting of the text there are a number of devices I have used to paint the scene. I use a piano part (encompassing full range of the keyboard) mostly in block chords in 2/2 to paint an image of the depth and weight of the ocean; on top of this voices in 4/4 skim across in various waves. The opening tonality is a deeply resonant E flat minor/E flat Dorian mode. Often there are odd dissonances in order to paint the idea that Ariel's words are so strange and actually untrue. While I do extend the sea nymphs/ding-dong-bell text into a long sea scene of its own, I would rather not have the singers exaggerate the consonants in some kind of effort to mimic bells. The ending in major implies that eventually the truth that Alsonso is really alive will be found out. This score is not licensed for performance.
