FORORD

PREFACE
Edvard Fliflet Bræin (1924-1976) was a Norwegian composer and conductor born in Kristiansund. Bræin’s best-known compositions are Ut mot havet [Towards the sea] (1964) and the opera Anne Pedersdotter (1971).
Bræin studied composition with Bjarne Brustad at the Music Conservatory in Oslo 1942-1945. 1950-1951 with Jean Rivier at the Paris Conservatory. He graduated as an organist in 1945 and made his conducting debut with Musikselskabet Harmoniens Orkester [Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, from 1987] in Bergen in 1947.
In the original manuscript’s first movement on page 14, the date 15/1-49 [15 January 1949] is noted with a scribble underneath. Bræin turned twenty-five on 23 August that year.
The casting off corresponds with the original manuscript.

CRITICAL
REPORT
A critical edition examines whether there are typographical errors in the notes and compares the manuscript with other manuscripts and printed editions by the composer. At the back of the score there is a revision report: a list of what has been changed and which sources have been used.
In the original manuscript's rst movement on page 14, the date 15/1-49 [15 January 1949] is noted with a scribble underneath. On page 15, eight bars are notated, replacing the four bars from bar 214. The original material from the National Library of Norway does not contain a complete set of parts. There is only the second movement Adagio where Bræin has written "Two pieces for string quartet" in red pencil. Neither the quartet nor the two pieces were registered with TONO [1]. In the original manuscript, "op. 15" has been crossed out in pencil and replaced with "op. 14." But op. 15, published by Musikk-Husets forlag A/S, is Trio for violin, viola and cello (1963), and op. 14 (1963) in Bræin's opus list is Liten ouverture (Tordivelen og ua) for orchestra. Given that there is little written information about Bræin, that the opus numbers were given to two other compositions and that the part material for the remaining movements is missing, it is reasonable to assume that Kvartett nr. 1 has never been performed.
