Create visionary, great sounding and captivating music

electronic music At the Electronic Music course, we devote ourselves to create music by means of the computer or electronic instruments. A lot of different approaches are used in the teaching. Some theoretical, where the main focus will be on acquiring knowledge, no matter what level you are on. Some will be independent work, where you will have plenty of time to work with your own music, and receive individual feedback and critique. And some will be in groups where we help each other by listening and giving input. We also collaborate with the other study lines at the school during different interdisciplinary projects.

There will be plenty of possibilities of working with for instance singers, musicians, actors or dancers. You will have the opportunity to excel both technically as well as artistically, no matter what genre you are into, be it Trap, Detroit Techno, dubstep or avant-garde. We base the teaching on what YOU want to work with, regardless of whether you are using Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic, or prefer to make noise music using guitar pedals. We have iMacs with Ableton Live, different controllers, sound cards, headphones, and some hardware synths available, if you do not have your own gear.

During the semester, we go through a number of topics such as: Synthesizers Samplers Music production Recording Mixing Live performance Creative tools Electronic music history Overall the teaching is put into a broad perspective both technically and aesthetically. At the end of the semester, we embark on a tour where we perform our music to a live audience - either on our own, or together with some of the other study lines, e.g. singers or contemporary circus.

TOPICS: SYNTHESIZERS

We go through the basic fundamentals of synthesizers, and work practically using this knowledge. We review topics like subtractive synthesis and FM synthesis, and terms like oscillators, filters, envelopes, and amps.

SAMPLING

How have people sampled previously? How has sampling affected the music? What about copyright? And, of course, we will sample different material, perhaps from the Internet, our surroundings or from the other study lines. We also take a look at alternative sound sources like e.g. raw data files.

RECORDING

LIVE PERFORMANCE

Mixing is a central part of electronic music production. We discuss how the use of equalizers, compressors, and other effects can optimize your sound, and also how mixing can become a part of your creative expression. We deal with using specific tools and techniques to obtain a specific goal.

At some point, you may have to record external sounds. We discuss how to get the best results, whether it is by using microphones to record a singer or a drum kit, recording old analogue synthesizers, guitar amps, or making field recordings.

You may have experienced the sense of 'being stuck' with a track or lacking the inspiration to move on. We look at different techniques that may be applied to endorse the creative process. Thus your music may move from an idea to finished result also by means of form and composition.

How can you present your music to an audience? Is it okay just to press PLAY on the computer, or should you improvise and play an electronic instrument? Based on this discussion, we try out some different live performances and techniques such as solo performance or improvisation with the whole class.

IN GENERAL

Anyone can learn to create music with a computer. But you have to be willing to work intensely on the technical necessities and to be challenged both artistically and in terms of genres. It is an advantage, although not a must, that you have worked with music or played an instrument previously. We do not just want to teach you the 'right' way to do things but just as much the personal way. If you have a laptop, bring it. This also goes if you have a nice set of earphones. If you do not have either, the school provides you with the necessary equipment. The teaching is serious and you need to be concentrated on your work, but we also focus on excitement, fun and interdisciplinary collaboration.
