VERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
DO IT FOR LOVE, based on an original idea and with music by Chris Thompson, the former vocalist of Manfred Mann's Earth Band (1974 bis 1999), is a tale where Magic and Romance are intertwined into a day-to-day life. A story of two young people, which deals with aspects of family, friendship, and loss. Set in a world where love and trust are challenged by evil, greed and selfishness. How long can you wait for love to do its magic?
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
Chris Thompson's music ranges from rock to pure musical. Dance numbers contrast with emotional ballads as the songs weave their way through the story. These dance numbers ensure movement on stage while the ballads characterize roles that are attractive to musical performers.
The cast includes two leads (male and female, both age 21) plus three other major roles: the male lead's "bad" stepfather (around 50, smooth operator), the female lead's grandmother, and the female lead's best friend and boss (between 30 and 40). Supporting roles and a flexible ensemble. Extras complete the cast, if available. Ethnicity is irrelevant.
Stage requirements: Standard - three indoor/large venues (apartment, hair salon, café), one to two outdoor venues (forest, open-air stage). Several scenes "in one" (before the intermediate curtain during conversion) or possibly as a "split stage". Well suited for a revolving stage, but also conceivable for an open-air production.
About the plot
Veronica and Bobbie share the fate of having lost their parents or father at a young age. They have known each other since childhood and are now lovers. Veronica grew up with her grandmother Marjorie, who gives her a music box for her 21st birthday, which is said to have a special power. If you open it on a full moon night and sing along to the melody (the magic notes), a previously expressed wish comes into fulfilment. Both Veronica and Marjorie don't seem to take this story too seriously - but when Bobbie, after talking to a mysterious visitor Thomas, becomes suspicious about his father's suicide, he and Veronica put the music box to the test. In fact, Bobbie disappears without a trace - to the abject dismay of Veronica, who suddenly realizes her responsibility.
Bobbie reunites with the enigmatic Thomas in "Nowhere" and is guided by him to discover the true circumstances of his father's death. Bobbie's stepfather, Richard "Dickie" Develyn, who was once the accountant and manager of Michael Sharp (Bobbie’s father), is pursuing his own plans. He has overheard Veronica and Marjorie talking about the magical powers of the music box and steals it before the next full moon night. Jerome, Veronica's boss and best friend, steps into action. Together with her colleagues and friends, they want to thwart Dickie's intentions. They can prevent Dickie from expressing his insane wish at the right moment - but can the powerful music box be prevented from being misused again? Is Bobbie's return still the right wish in this situation? Thomas also has his own intentions but accepts the seemingly hopeless situation. Seemingly hopeless - because Marjorie's common sense should not be underestimated...

THOMAS
SCENE 1 /1 ( PROLOGUE 1 , 1947)
OPENING SCENE THOMAS and AGATHA: Takes place in front of the curtain. Set in 1947 the two characters are wearing costumes from that era.
#01 – PIANO OVERTURE “SAD”
A railway station, on the platform. It’s misty, dark and mysterious. There is smoke from the steam engines. Background noise is heard. There is a bench in the middle of the stage. The two characters walk in arm in arm, they are in love, talking to each other. The audience can’t hear what they are saying until they sit down on the bench… dialogue begins.
(takes Agatha’s Arm and says desperately)
Come with me Agatha, please change your mind! I can’t live without you. There’s no other way for us to be together. I’ve been caught too many times coming out to see you. I won’t be able to come back anymore!
AGATHA
We both knew it would come to this from the very beginning. We knew it!
THOMAS
Knowing it doesn’t make it any easier, but I just couldn’t stop myself from being with you.
AGATHA
Thomas, I never thought I would love someone as much as I love you, but I can’t leave everything behind. My sister and little Marjorie, they’ve already lost a husband and a father. It breaks my heart to choose, but they are the only family I have so I just can’t come with you Thomas. Not just yet.
RAILWAY STATION ANNOUNCEMENT
Last call for the night train! This is the final warning; the train is about to leave!
THOMAS
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
“Not just yet” – then at least there is some hope. Look, I really shouldn’t be doing this, but if you ever have that change of heart here is something that can bring you to me.
(he takes a box out of his coat, gives it to her and continues)
And if that should happen, and I really hope it does, just look inside, it will tell you what to do But now my love you must excuse me, I really have to go.
(in tears)
Don’t go…
THOMAS
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
I’ve told you, it’s impossible to stay…. Believe me, no one is more sorry than I am. They embrace and he turns and leaves stage right. She turns away, continues sobbing and leaves stage left, as she does so she opens the box, and the seven magic notes begin to play, but are taken over by the sound of the train leaving.
BOBBIE
SCENE 1/ 2 ( PROLOGUE 2 , PRESENT TIME )
The present day, the same bench. The atmosphere changes, lights go up and it’s colourful. It’s now a happy scene. On rush Bobbie and Veronica.
(excitedly)
I know your birthday is tomorrow, but I just can’t wait any longer. So, here’s something special from me today.

MARJORIE
#0 4 - PIANO OVERTURE “ HAPPY ”
It’s VERONICA’s 21st birthday party at her Grandmother MARJORIE’s house, where they both live. It is early evening. Dress code is 70s. All are dressed up. The guests are BOBBIE, Veronica’s boyfriend; his mother RACHEL and her flashy, very rich, nasty, controlling husband, RICHARD “call-me-Dickie” Develyn, who is also her accountant/business advisor and in control of Bobbie’s father’s fortune. Bobbie’s father was a world-famous country-rock singer who, according to legend, committed suicide by a drug overdose. Other guests are DOROTHY, BLANCHE, ROSE, SYLVIA and SOPHIA, Veronica’s colleagues from the hairdressing salon, plus BOYFRIENDS), JEROME who is Veronica’s best friend and confid ant, a larger-than-life character, hairdresser and owner of the salon, where they all work. THOMAS will appear later in the scene.
The curtain opens on Marjorie’s living room. MARJORIE is ‘fluffing’ around for a minute while Veronica is changing into her dress code 70s outfit. She is talking to herself, being a bit dotty, while making the final preparations and sorting out decorations for the arrival of the guests.
That’s not right, Marjorie, you have to swap that around!
(makes the “swapping around” typical hand movement that will return during the show, and swaps the balloons with the numbers “2” and “1” from 12 to 21)
Now Marjorie, you mustn’t forget to get the cake out of the oven, otherwise it’ll burn to pieces again, just like last time when the fire brigade had to come… What lovely young men they were!
She also hums or la-las the notes from the music box. The doorbell rings.
VERONICA
Granny can you get the door, I’m not ready…
MARJORIE opens the door.
MARJORIE
Veronica, it’s the girls from the salon!

Lovely to meet you all!
(VERONICA is rolling the eyes. Big entrance of JEROME, with SYLVIA following him. She carries the two presents: A tree and a scooter.)
JEROME & SYLVIA
Happy birthday!
MARJORIE
Of course I know who that is! That’s Jerome, your boss!
JEROME
...her best friend, you mean!
(big hug and he picks her up, swings her around)
You look a million Dollars!
(clapping hands, ordering SYLVIA to put the gifts down)

Water twice a week.
(to the step)
Use every day, especially in the morning. To get to work on time.
ROSE
(to Dorothy and Blanche)
I have been meaning to ask you: Is Sylvia in love with the boss?
DOROTHY
No, Rose, she just likes to carry things and follow him around!
BLANCHE
Nothing more tragic than unrequited love.
(Entrance of BOBBIE first, who goes to Veronica, RICHARD-call-me-DICKIE and RACHEL come with him.)

ROSE
Okay. Where shall I start… You know who Michael Sharp is, right?
Everybody knows who Michael Sharp is. (dreamily)
Oh, I love his songs!
DOROTHY
Everybody loves his songs, Rose. That’s why he sold millions of records and put this town on the map.
BLANCHE
We were all in tears the day he took his own life.
DOROTHY
You and the rest of the world! But it didn’t take long for that Richard Develyn to dry Rachel’s tears, though, did it! And he’s been happily living off the Sharp’s estate ever since.
BLANCHE
Rachel and Michael Sharp didn’t really have a very happy marriage , did they, with all the drugs and the alcohol. The only good thing to come out of it was Bobbie.
ROSE
Oh, and that young man (pointing at Bobbie) really looks exactly like Michael Sharp!
DOROTHY
Yes, Rose, that is because he is his son.
ROSE
How lovely of them to come to Veronica’s birthday party!
DOROTHY
Oh, they kind of would, Rose. Because Bobbie is Veronica’s fiancé.
ROSE

DOROTHY
No... But I can say that Rachel and Richard are not exactly what they seem.

RICHARD
Hello, I’m Richard Develyn, but you can call me Dickie. Do you come here often?

Hi, Veronica, hi Robert, I’m Thomas. Great to finally meet you. (shakes Veronica’s and Bobbie’s hands. THEY exchange looks of not recognizing the person they are talking to, but assuming he is with one of the girls )
I’m very happy to hear “Take Me Home Tonight”. I’m a big fan of your father’s music.
Thank you, me too. I always thought he was the best. (VERONICA nods in agreement)
I’m proud of almost everything Pops did. And I miss him. Things would be so different if he were here today.

THOMAS
I know he would be very proud of you too. (after a pause, he continues)
I see Mister Develyn and your mother are organizing another charity concert?
1 Lyrics see appendix!
BOBBIE
Yes, but this year it’s a special edition because it’s the 10th anniversary of Pops’ death.
THOMAS
Who is benefitting?
BOBBIE
It’s in aid of Suicide Watch and their drug rehab program.
THOMAS
That’s a bit ironic, isn’t it? Mister Develyn putting on a concert for those charities?
BOBBIE
Why is that ironic?
THOMA S
I thought it was common knowledge that Develyn provided the band with everything they needed. Or maybe I should say: wanted.
(HE pauses for a moment)
If you know what I mean?
BOBBIE
No, I don’t know what you mean!
(getting flustered)
He was only Pops’ accountant.
THOMAS
Oh, is that what they told you? Then I will tell you something else, there is no way your father would have committed suicide so close to finishing his best album yet.
BOBBIE (now angry)
Who are you and why do you think you know the slightest thing about my father?
VERONICA
Why are you saying all this? Surely you can see you’re upsetting him! Stop it, it’s all in the past anyway.

The past has long shadows. Longer than you think. I should know, I’ve been there.
BOBBIE
(agitated)
Man, what are you talking about, being there? Where did you hear all this rubbish? It doesn’t matter, you’re wrong anyway, it was definitely suicide, I still have his note.
THOMAS
I know you do. But I suggest you read it again… more carefully Now you must excuse me, I really have to go (HE slips away and disappears. BOBBIE shouts after him)
BOBBIE
How do you know? Hey, wait up! You can’t leave now!
(but THOMAS is gone - to VERONICA)
Who was that?
VERONICA
BOBBIE
I’ve never seen him before. He must have come with Rose! Why did he say all that stuff?
I don’t know, but I’m going to go ask him right now.
VERONICA
Oh, just leave it! He’s probably had too much to drink!

We’re all going home now. Thanks for a lovely party. Can’t find my son, can’t find my husband - welcome to the family. We must get together soon and talk about the wedding! Bye now!

SCENE 1/ 4 – MARJORIE’S HOUSE (CONT.)
Finally MARJORIE and VERONICA are left alone, they close the door, give a sigh of relief. They hug each other. On their own, or so they think: RICHARD DEVELYN is still in the house, on the phone in one of the bedrooms.
MARJORIE
You look a bit distracted, dear!?
VERONICA
Pffff… just Rose’s boyfriend putting weird ideas in Bobbie’s head, and now he’s gone running off after him. But I’m not going to let it spoil my birthday.
(sighs)
Oh, it’s been such a special day with all the people I love! I wish Mum and Dad could have been here too
MARJORIE
If it’s any comfort, dear – I can tell you they would have been very proud of you. At least your mother can be here in some way. I have a surprise for you, something special that she would have given you today, just as I gave it to her on her 21st birthday, just like my mother gave it to me. Just like her mother gave it to…
(being dotty Marjorie)
No no no, Marjorie, that’s not true. My mother got it from Aunt Agatha, of course… You know, the famous Aunt Agatha…the one…
(a loving pat on the shoulder)

MARJORIE

Wow, that’s fantastic! How lovely to have something from my mother after all these years! It must have been hard for you to keep that a secret.
THEY open it. The notes are very beautiful and haunting. A shiver runs through VERONICA, she is moved by the sound. She says over the music:
Oh, I miss my mother.
(SHE closes the box)
MARJORIE
I know dear, there’s not a single day goes by that I don’t think about her. She was a beautiful person inside and out, and you are so much like her.
VERONICA’s head goes down and she sheds a tear. MARJORIE, seeing her reaction, is quick to defuse this sad situation. RICHARD has finished his phone calls and comes out; he can now be seen by the audience. HE is just about to leave, but then decides to listen to the conversation.
Oh, oh, oh, I forgot… there’s a little story attached to this music box. It grants wishes…. Only when you sing, not just anything, but the seven magic notes, of course. You know, the ones that you just heard, and there was something else… Oh, I can’t remember… Oh, what was it? Why don’t I just read out the inscription? Maybe that makes more sense.
MARJORIE reads in a spooky voice.
“To those who sing these notes in sync Behold what magic they will bring Make thy wish whilst the full moon shines…
(The full moon, of course! That’s what it was!)
Then sing along, thy wish is mine Náht after once, nought after twice, all ye together would be wise There is many have been fooled before So be careful what you wish for!”
VERONICA laughs.
VERONICA
Oh yes, that definitely makes much more sense!
(MUSIC starts)
MARJORIE
Yes, very silly, I know. It’s only a stupid legend. But nevertheless, it’s better to keep it to yourself. That was my mother’s advice.
(Pause)
Anyway, we all used it as a jewellery box, and that worked really well, dear.

That was such a great idea to have ‘dress code 70s’ for my party. Everybody looked so fabulous, even Granny.
Well, she should have done, I had to use twenty cans of hairspray to get her hair right.
VERONICA
Jerome, you wicked boy!
JEROME
By the way, what happened to Bobbie? I saw him running out the door.

# 11 – HIT RECORD ( DICKIE, PRE - RECORDED)
RADIO PRESENTER
And now, here is a brand-new song from his dear friend, Richard-call-me-Dickie Develyn, a first for him, and all for charity, a brand-new record, shooting up the charts, our highest new entry, „Hit Record“!
VERONICA and JEROME begin ‘bopping’ to the music, about ten seconds. JEROME remembers that it is Dickie Develyn. Lyric „Hit Record“ starts: “I don’t know that much about music...”
VERONICA
Quite right, no you don’t…
GIRLS (ALTOGETHER)
Oh no…
(cover their ears JEROME turns the radio down while talking)
JEROME
Ugh, Dickie Develyn. Now he thinks he is a popstar, and he can buy everything. Well, he can’t buy me! Not then, not now, not ever! And there’s something else he can’t buy, and that’s talent! Sylvia, turn that radio off, it’s making my hair stand on end! I shut him up at the party, didn’t I?
SYLVIA sighs and turns the radio off. THEY continue dancing without music, JEROME is messing around, silly dancing.

So what about the presents you got? Tell all!

JEROME
Wow, that’s fantastic! A ring and a necklace. He’s finally throwing some money at you.
VERONICA
I got some lovely flowers from Rachel… And your present, what was it again, hmmm? (she jokes with him as the huge tree is in the salon)
But the most fantastic present of all came from my mother…
JEROME

VERONICA
Then who was it? I thought he came with you!
DOROTHY
Who the hell are you talking about?
VERONICA
The guy who talked to Bobbie and me, at the end of the party!
BLANCHE
What did he look like?
(a beat, BOBBIE and VERONICA exchange looks – BOBBIE shrugs)
VERONICA
I can’t really remember what he looked like…

VERONICA
There is nothing really weird about that!
No, except for the names.

Well, he always called me Robert, not Bobbie and I always called him Pops, and now that I think about it …it doesn’t feel right!
VERONICA (annoyed)
Well, he obviously wasn’t thinking straight at that moment.

If he wasn’t thinking straight, he surely would have written what was natural for himnot something he would never say, right? Just like I always call you Ronnie, and never “Veronica”.
VERONICA (sceptical)
I guess that’s another way to look at it.
BOBBIE
Whatever it is, you know me well enough to know I’m not gonna rest until I get to the bottom of it. I have to find this Thomas whoever he is.
VERONICA
Very well, but how are you gonna do that? Nobody seems to know who he is, and we have no idea where he went! Why is it so important now when we are trying to sort out our future together?
BOBBIE
Ronnie, how can I sort out the future until I sort out the past! Can’t you understand that my whole world has been turned upside down? Something that I believed to be true might not be, this is a big deal for me. I really wish I could talk to him. I really wish there was a way...

I often wanted to, but there never seemed to be a right time. I didn’t want to get in the way of the happiness of you and your new boyfriend. You were too busy with each other to worry about me!

That’s not fair!
BOBBIE
Oh but it is! You know Dickie took control of our lives and you just let him.

BOBBIE (whispers)
I still think it’s crazy!
VERONICA

Oh, is that the time already, I really have to get back to work or Jerome will give me the hairdryer treatment. Meet you tonight at the old yew tree, nine o’clock! I’ll bring the box! Love you!
BOBBIE
See you there. Love you!

M ARJORIE
(sleepily)
Oh, Aunt Agatha, whatever happened to you? Where did you go? Aunt Agatha! Aunt Agatha! Thomas, save her!
(she awakes and sits up from the couch)
Oh, I wonder what brought that on? It’s all such a long time ago. When I was a spring chicken and I could bend down without putting my back out. Everything is so different now! Nobody takes me seriously anymore, even though I’m still as sharp as two toffees!
MARJORIE tries to jump off from the couch but falls back immediately. SHE takes out a harmonica, starts playing and singing mournfully.
#1 6 - WHOLE LOT TO GIVE (MARJORIE, YOUNG MARJORIES)
( MARJORIE )
I need some coffee… Oh, my aching bones… There just ain’t nothing good about getting old…
MARJORIE is joined by a group of ‘YOUNG MARJORIES’, dressed identically and representing how she feels within herself. SHE suddenly jumps up, throwing off her old house clothes, revealing a young person’s polka dot 50’s style dress, and begins to sing as this song becomes up-tempo blues.

SCENE 1/ 10 – IN THE MAGIC FOREST
In the magic forest, it is the full moon! The ensemble, dressed in black, as TREES, their arms are the branches, their fingers outstretched. MUSIC starts.
#1 7 - FOUR WINDS (MICHAEL SHARP PRE - RECORDED, PLUS MAGIC TREES)

BOBBIE
THERE IS A TIME FOR ALL MANKIND, TO GO WHERE NO MAN GOES A TIME TO STAND UP, STAND UP PROUD AND THE FOUR WINDS THEY BLOW
AND THE ANGELS CRY AND THE ANGELS SING ACROSS ETERNITY
AND THE WIND THAT BLEW A MILLION YEARS BLOWS NOW FOR YOU AND ME
VERONICA and BOBBIE wend their way through the TREES as you would entering a forest. They are being followed at a distance by DICKIE DEVELYN who will witness everything that happens without being seen. As they move through them, the TREES make small movements, unnoticed by VERONICA and BOBBIE.
THE WIND IS KING UPON THE SEA, AND THE SEA WON’T LET YOU GO THE WIND THAT BLEW A MILLION YEARS IS BLOWING AT YOU
HISTORY IS FULL OF THOSE WHO HEAR THE BELL THAT TOLLS AND HERE IT IS RINGING OUT LOUD AND CLEAR AND THE FOUR WINDS THEY BLOW
AND THE ANGELS CRY AND THE ANGELS SING ACROSS ETERNITY AND THE WIND THAT BLEW ACROSS THE YEARS BLOWS NOW FO R YOU AND ME BLOWS NOW FOR YOU AND ME BLOWIN‘ FOR YOU AND ME
„Four Winds“ music dies away, the trees stop moving as VERONICA and BOBBIE reach their spot in the magic forest. There is silence. BOBBIE puts the music box on the ground. VERONICA playfully bends down to open the box.
This is scary, isn’t it? I don’t have a good feeling about this. What if it really works?
VERONICA
That’s why we’re here! I want it to work! All you’ve been talking about is finding him!
BOBBIE
Maybe I’m not ready for what he has to say, maybe I won’t like it

VERONICA

The atmosphere changes with the music.
BOBBIE
Oh, I still don’t have a good feeling about this!
VERONICA
Bo, Bo! Bobbie’s afraid of a little bit of magic! Are you ready to do this? If you wait any longer the full moon will be gone! Oh, come on, it’s only a bit of fun, what’s the worst that can happen?
THE TREES

DO IT, DO IT, DO I T, DO IT
Key change: The atmosphere grows more intense. DICKIE DEVELYN joins the TREES, pretending to be one himself, to observe the situation better.

Okay, what’s the wish?
BOBBIE
I can’t believe we are doing this! Oh well, here goes... I want to talk to Thomas!
VERONICA
(grabs Bobbie’s hands, takes a deep breath and shouts)
I wish for Bobbie to find Thomas so he can talk to him.
SHE opens the music box. The notes ring out, she sings in unison as the notes play. There is silence.
#1 9 – THE MAGIC NOTES AND DISAPPEAR
Suddenly the notes start to repeat and echo around the forest, over and over, the trees continue to move around, and then the music morphs into a big, orchestrated, Disneyesque score. The TREES surround the couple with large, out-of-control movements and finally spirit Bobbie away Silence A stunned VERONICA falls to the ground on top of the music box. DICKIE covers his mouth in astonishment.
VERONICA
(looks out fearfully)
Bobbie?
Curtains close. End of Part One.

SCENE 2/1 - NOWHERE
THOMAS and BOBBIE in the Great Unknown, anywhere, anytime
In front of the curtain. Thomas is sitting with his back to the audience, centre stage.
5…4… 3… 2…1…
A bang as BOBBIE lands. He stumbles in, totally disorientated and confused.
Ronnie… Ronnie?… Phew… I must have passed out… (to himself)
Where am I?
THOMAS
BOBBIE
NURZUR ANSICHT
THOMAS turns around, the audience see and recognise him at the same time as Bobbie does.
Thomas… Thomas, unbelievable, it worked! I’m so glad I found you.
Bobbie Sharp, how nice to see you…Yes, I see my plan did indeed work.
No, no, not your plan. It was Ronnie’s, she made this wish and sang all those notes and here you are, un-be-lievable. We just tried it and poof here you are. Where is Ronnie anyway? I must tell her, she’ll be amazed
THOMAS
BOBBIE
I’m afraid that won’t be possible. I’m sorry to tell you but making that wish has brought you to my part of the universe, it’s not quite like yours.
Oh well, hang on a minute then, while I give her a quick call. (takes out his phone)
NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
I don’t seem to have any reception here.
THOMAS
Like I said, not quite like yours.
BOBBIE
What does that mean exactly?
THOMAS
There is so much more out there than you people see, Bobbie, and this is a part of it.
BOBBIE
I don’t like the sound of that. Well I really hope there IS a way out of here, because she must be going crazy not knowing where I am.
THOMAS
As a matter of fact there is and that leads us to part two of my plan.
BOBBIE
What plan?
THOMAS
My master plan of love and retribution.
BOBBIE
I don’t like the sound of that either.
(Bobbie mumbles)
THOMAS
BOBBIE
NURZUR ANSICHT
What, you’re in love with Ronnie too?
THOMAS
BOBBIE
No of course not, close though, she is related.
NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
And here is the deal. Part one was getting you here. Tick… I say tick, but it wasn’t that easy. I’ve been stuck here for a very long time. You wouldn’t believe what I had to do to get ten minutes to visit you at the birthday party. I won’t be here for much longer though, and that brings us to part two where we are both depending on Veronica. She is the linchpin of it all, she has to make the wish that will get you back to her, and me back to the woman I love.
You’re in love with Marjorie?
THOMAS
Little Marjorie? No. It’s Agatha, Marjorie’s aunt, that I love.
BOBBIE
You mean the one who disappeared? She must be a hundred years old, if she’s alive that is.
THOMAS
Oh, she is!
BOBBIE
She’s still alive but... then… why aren’t you together? (an aside)
Despite the age difference!
THOMAS
NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
BOBBIE
Why does it have to be Ronnie?
THOMAS
BOBBIE
NURZUR ANSICHT
Ah, that’s a very good question. I hate to admit it but I made two big mistakes, Firstly, I chose magic over love, and I left her alone at the railway station. Secondly, I gave her the music box, but I’m afraid she wasn’t careful what she wished for, and now she’s under a spell caught between two worlds, where I can’t get to her… Damn box. There’s so much more out there Bobbie. I’ve been trying to get us back together for seventy years, and now the opportunity has come to break that spell. But like I said, I need Veronica’s h elp.
Ahh... Because she became the rightful owner of the magic notes, when Marjorie gave her the jewellery box on her birthday.
Okay, I’m with you up till there, but how can you be sure she’ll make the right wish?
THOMAS
Don’t you worry about that. I won’t leave anything up to chance this time. I just can’t wait until the next full moon.
BOBBIE
You mean I’m stuck here for the next four weeks?
THOMAS
Time feels differently here, Bobbie. And it will give us a chance to get to know each other.
BOBBIE (sarcastically)
Oh, nice! So you can start by explaining everything you told me at the birthday party! Is any of that true? ‘Cause that’s the whole reason I’m here!
THOMAS
Oh yes, it’s true alright, I just wanted to fill two needs with one deed! And that brings me to part three of my plan, but fair enough, let’s get back to your questions.
(a pause)
Did you re-read the note?
BOBBIE
Yes, I did! And you’re right, it doesn’t make any sense. He never called me Bobbie and I never called him Dad. It almost feels like he didn’t write it himself. Is that what you wanted me to find out?
THOMAS
I think you just answered that question, don’t you?
BOBBIE
But why would somebody else write his suicide note?
THOMAS
Well, to make one thing look like another.
BOBBIE
You mean it was supposed to look like suicide? Instead of what? … Murder? Thomas, you’ve gotta give me something here.
THOMAS
BOBBIE
Murder is maybe too strong a word, but it wasn’t suicide and if you think about it, there is only one person who would stage such a thing, and for only one reason, to cover up their involvement and here you are in the great unknown, when all your answers are to be found at home.
At home? You mean… my mother? You’re out of your mind. My mother would never do such a thing, she loved him too much.
THOMAS
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE

Who’s with the aliens? That reminds me of my uncle Cliff – or was it uncle Richard? Anyway, he went missing, and they told us kids that he was taken by the aliens. Of course, that wasn’t true! It turned out he was living in Frinton-on-Sea, with a sailor!

Keep up, Rose! We’re talking about Bobbie, of course! We’re all wondering when he’s gonna come back! You know he went off chasing your “boyfriend” Thomas that none of us has ever seen! Apparently, last reported sighting was in Liechtenstein, but unfortunately it was a dead end!

VERONICA
Not now, Granny! Please leave me alone.
MARJORIE
Come come, dear, it can’t possibly be that bad. I remember your grandfather just before we got married. I had to go down and drag him out of the pub where he had been for two days, getting some Dutch courage. And I told him: “Now listen here, Rudy, every man gets cold feet before they get married. But you have to pull yourself together if we are going to make this work”. And he did! Just like Bobbie will.
VERONICA
I’m sorry, but it’s much more complicated than that.
MARJORIE
It’s not complicated at all, dear. They just need to be told! That’s all there is to it.
VERONICA
Oh Granny, I don’t even know where to start explaining it to you. I don’t even understand it myself. I just need to be on my own right now.
MARJORIE
Alright, dear, if that’s what you want, but I’ll be here whenever you’re ready to talk. But remember Bobbie is a good boy, and whatever this is, he must have a very good reason to be doing whatever it is he’s doing.
There is a great weight on VERONICA’s young shoulders. SHE is pacing around, having a conversation with an imaginary Bobbie.
VERONICA
I can’t believe what happened. This is a nightmare. What have we done? What if I can’t get you back? Why didn’t we take it seriously? Why didn’t we talk this through properly and think of the consequences! Where are you and will I ever see you again? And I don’t mean just in my dreams every night!

SCENE 2/ 4 – DICKIE DEVELYN’S OFFICE AND VERONICA’S BEDROOM
Thursday morning. This scene will happen via a split stage. DICKIE et al. walk on to the stage into ‘full action’ in front of the curtain while the split stage is set up. We see DICKIE coming in, with his HEAVIES (BODYGUARDS), JOURNALISTS, SECRETARIES etc. following him DICKIE is hyped up. He’s doing interviews, one on the phone and one live at the same time! The audience will learn more about his plan for this big concert. Cameras are flashing, phones are ringing. TV crews, cameras, media people, secretaries, they can be all running around doing his bidding in mime, plus microphones and cables!

The FIRST Celebration: DICKIE Develyn is organizing ‘The Full Moon Special Party’, this year’s name for the annual charity concert in memory of Bobbie’s famous father Michael Sharp. Dickie is of course the charity chairman! HE then walks into the empty office setup (curtain opens). Everybody follows, his HEAVIES are all in white with black ties, posing for the cameras. In this situation DICKIE is becoming a buffoon, the success of “Hit Record” and the interest in his charity conc ert have gone to his head. RACHEL is joining the scene later.
(to a JOURNALIST, into the phone etc.)
We’re number one! – „Hit Record“ on the charts at number one! – Write that down! –Take a note! – It’s gonna be marvellous! – Like nothing you have seen before! –Superstar upon superstar! – Only two days to wait! – This Saturday, the ‘Full Moon Special Party’!
JOURNALIST 1
You can tell Mister Richard Develyn is already in the mood!
DICKIE
Oh, call me Dickie.
JOURNALIST 1
Okay! So… Mister Dickie… Why do you think „Hit Record“ is such a success?
DICKIE
With all the money I threw at it, success was guaranteed! – Oh yes, and of course Michael Sharp was a huge inspiration. I already told you that Madonna will be there! – Ed Sheeran! – We might even be able to resurrect Elvis for this! – You never know what can happen on the full moon, you will find out though! – I promise you it will be to die for!
Phone rings, DICKIE answers.
Oh yes, Mister President, of course, Mister President! No problem at all – two after-show passes for you? You got it!
JOURNALIST 2
What would Michael Sharp think of this?
DICKIE
No comment.

Sensational!
All the JOURNALISTS turn to RACHEL who has just walked in.
JOURNALIST 2
(to Rachel)
As head of the foundation and as Michael Sharp’s widow – how do you feel about all this publicity and massive attention the project is getting because of the ten-year anniversary concert?
RACHEL
I am really looking forward to raising a lot more money, because with the money we have raised from the last shows, we were able to help a lot of young people to get back on track. I am also very happy that Michael’s memory is still very much alive today. He meant so much to everybody in this town, and in fact, everywhere in the whole

The SECOND celebration: VERONICA is back in the magic forest. SHE is there to reconnect with Bobbie, as this was the last place where they were together. There are trees, but they don’t behave in a “magical” way.

SCENE 2/ 5 – MARJORIE’S KITCHEN
Saturday morning. MARJORIE is walking around the kitchen, dusting and moving things around and humming to herself the magic notes. She finds a pair of Veronica’s earrings.
MARJORIE
Here they lie! Veronica, I gave you a jewellery box for your birthday and still your earrings are lying around. Such a beautiful box too! Mother found it in Aunt Agatha’s compost heap. Why would she have left it there? Such a mysterious box, hmmm…
There is a knock at the door. JEROME opens it and rushes in.
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
JEROME
Marjorie, I had to come now to catch you alone, before Veronica comes home for lunch. I’ve been meaning to talk to you for days. I can’t stand it any longer. Now I really need to know, what is up with those two? She’s getting all her colours wrong! Mrs Hig genbottom had black instead of blond the other day. Outrageous and very expensive for me! She won’t look me in the eye either. Is it Bobbie? Have they broken up, has he got another girlfriend? Whatever it is, there’s something that girl’s not telling me, I can’t get it out of her. I’m sure she’s confided in you. So, out with it, out with it! At once!
MARJORIE
Dear, please, calm down. Stop getting your knickers in a twist. Let me make you a nice cup of tea.
JEROME
Marjorie, a cup of tea is just not going to do it right now! I want the truth.
M ARJORIE
The truth?
JEROM E
Yes, and nothing but! Veronica would normally tell me everything, so it must be really bad.
MARJORIE
Actually, I know as much as you, absolutely nothing. But I have noticed the girl’s been crying herself to sleep at night, and funny you should come now, as I was just wondering. Maybe it has something to do with the box.
JEROME
What box?
MARJORIE
(reluctantly)
Well, you know, the box…
JEROME (insisting)
What about it? Is that the present she was going to tell me about?
MARJORIE
Well, I suppose she wanted to, but it’s against the rules!
JEROME
What rules, what box? Marjorie, darling, you have to tell me. I have the impression that Veronica is in danger. Really, you must tell me. Now.
MA RJOR IE
Well, if I must… I gave her a music box for her birthday. It was her mother’s. It’s a family heirloom, passed from mother to daughter on their 21st birthday. Now, there’s a little story attached to it. When you sing along with the seven notes that the box plays, a wish will be granted to the singer if this is done on the full moon. Wait… I’ll go and get it and read you the inscription.
SHE gets the box from Veronica’s bedroom, opens it, it plays the seven notes.
#2 8 – THE MAGIC NOTES
She stops it and reads the inscription in a spooky voice, as if she still doesn’t really believe it does grant a wish.
“To those who sing these notes in sync Behold what magic they will bring Make thy wish whilst the full moon shines Then sing along, thy wish is mine Náht after once, nought after twice, all ye together would be wise There is many have been fooled before So be careful what you wish for!”
Oh dear, well of course I haven’t tried it out and I don’t believe it for one second, but my mother did tell me that it was best to leave it alone. She must have got her fingers burned or something. She made it very clear – if I dared to sing along with the notes my nose would fall off, my hair would go green and I would grow a hump on my back! And furthermore
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
JEROME
That’s a nice story, Marjorie, but we need to focus. I’m really worried. We haven’t seen Bobbie for weeks, it’s almost like he’s disappeared.
MARJORIE
Well, no, of course not! As if someone could disappear! The only person I know who disappeared was Aunt Agatha. I remember waiting every morning for her to come back, but she never did.
JEROME
Let’s concentrate, Marjorie. I have a bad feeling about this.
MARJORIE
Stop being a worrywart, dear! According to Veronica, Bobbie is chasing after Rose’s boyfriend, who said some upsetting things about his father at the birthday party. I don’t believe it for a minute. I think he’s just got cold feet. Like my Rudy, before we got married…

JEROME (surprised)
You know him? Then it’s true! He was there! Who is he? How do you know him?
MARJORIE
Well, he was Aunt Agatha’s boyfriend. You remember Aunt Agatha, the one who disappeared. But they’ve got nothing to do with our Veronica problem. (she thinks for a long moment)
Oh… But wait a minute! Yes! Yes, Aunt Agatha’s got everything to do with it! She must have used the box, that’s why we found it in her compost heap! Oh… She and Thomas were so much in love! That explains it all!
JEROME
I’m afraid that doesn’t explain anything at all.
MARJORIE
But it does! Hang on… I’ve almost got it… Hmmmm…. Almost got it… Oh dear, it’s gone…
JEROME
Marjorie, may I suggest you start from the beginning, please!
MARJORIE
Are you sure? From the very beginning?
(takes a deep breath)
It all happened when I was a little child! Aunt Agatha, my mother and I, we all lived together in a lovely old house called “The Willows”. My aunt was a well -known archaeologist, always going on some trip or other . On one of those trips she met Thomas, who my mother and I were very fond of. He was a little out of this world, but very sweet… He was the one who gave her this music box.
JEROME
Darling, I think you’re mixing up your Thomases…
MARJORIE
No, it’s definitely the same Thomas! Anyway - we all thought they were going to get married, but then one day he wasn’t around anymore, and not long after that, Aunt Agatha disappeared, and we found the music box lying open … My mother must have known that there was something wicked about it!
JE ROME
Wait a minute! Bobbie has also disappeared, right?
MARJORIE
Yes… And so did Aunt Agatha.
JEROME
Give me that music box, I want to look at the inscription again (murmuring)
hmmm… make a wish when the full moon shines… hmmm… be careful what you wish for… hmmm… many have been fooled before… (thinks for a moment)
You know what I think, Marjorie? Those two made a wish and it all went wrong
MARJORIE
That’s it! That’s exactly what I was getting to! Oh my God, could that be possible? I should have warned her, but it totally slipped my mind, it’s all such a long time ago, and yet Thomas hasn’t aged a day! It’s all very peculiar, Jerome… It doesn’t make any sense!

A big thank you for helping us raise so much money to Madonna, Ed Sheeran and Bono.

Happy with your seats, Mr President?
Pit Band on stage and Girls appear.
Another big hello to our viewers from all around the world. We are global for the star of the show, streaming live – a performance you will never forget, the one-and-only...
(really insincere)
But firstly, let us think of Michael Sharp just for a moment, and his untimely death. His name and legacy live on through these wonderful concerts.
(one second non-honest silence from him)
Ooooooh-kaaaayyy – please welcome your host, with his number one single, the oneand-only Richard-call-me-Dickie... Develyn!
Big signs to the audience saying „scream“, „shout“ etc. DICKIE appears on the stage, he is carried in on the shoulders of his HEAVIES, like a Pharaoh. THEY are wearing a „Dickie #1“ baseball cap. Dickie acknowledges the applause, walks up to the microphone and begins to sing.

DICKIE
I promised you unbelievable. I promised you incredible. Something amazing! Something bigger than big!
HEAVIES
The biggest!
NURZUR ANSICHT
Something so sensational, it will change everything forever, and you, my faithful followers, are all here to witness it. You will witness something so immense you won’t believe it!
I saw it with my own eyes on the last full moon, and I have been waiting patiently for this moment to arrive, and now that moment is finally here.
Are you ready? Bring on the box.
(Drum roll - HEAVIES bring on the box, placing it on a pedestal center stage)
This small, unremarkable music box can fulfil all wishes, and now it belongs to me.
I am seven mysterious, seven magic notes away from my ultimate wish. It involves a little bit of singing, which of course is no challenge for me.
Do I see some disbelief out there? Some doubt? Well, I tell you again I have seen it with my own eyes.
I knew at once what my wish would be. A wish to change my life forever. You might think it’s fame and fortune, you might think it’s true love, but no… I’m gonna go for bigger than big!
(the HEAVIES have fallen asleep and miss their key words)
I wish for – immortality!!
A huge reaction from the CROWD on stage.
(DICKIE)
DICKIE opens the box and begins to sing with great passion the seven notes in unison with the music box, as he saw Veronica do in the forest.
AH – HA – HA – HAAAA…
As HE gets to note 4, VERONICA, MARJORIE, JEROME, RACHEL, SALON GIRLS and THEIR BOYFRIENDS, aka “operation Rambo”, rush on to the stage.
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE www.musikundbuehne.de
JEROME
(as they run on, weapons in hand)
Charge!
BLACKOUT!
Scuffles and accompanying noise is heard. SALON GIRLS form a ring around the action.
MARJORIE and BOYFRIENDS take care of the HEAVIES, JEROME knocks over DICKIE, sitting on him so he can’t sing note 5! RACHEL is there to give DICKIE a couple of hard kicks and whacks him with her handbag to make sure he stays still and get a bit of her own back!
LIGHTS come up again.
VERONICA catches the music box, holds it and stares at it. SHE is not sure what to do, a thought is already occurring to her.
RACHEL
What are you waiting for? Bring Bobbie back!
MARJORIE
Yes, dear? What are you waiting for?
EVERYBODY
Bring Bobbie back!
ROSE
Oh no, if you ask me, that box should be destroyed.
DOROTHY
Rose, please… This is serious!
VERONICA
Actually, Dorothy, I kind of agree with Rose for once. We’ve seen how dangerous it can be if it falls into the wrong hands but as much as that sounds like the right thing to do, all I want is Bobbie! (hysterical) Why do I have to make this decision?
JEROME
But Veronica, it’s easy. Think about the wedding! We already have twenty orders for hairdos! Bring – him – back!
MARJORIE
Veronica! Don’t touch it! You know what happened to Aunt Agatha… Maybe we’ll all disappear! Oh dear, what can we do?
(THOMAS – when dressed in white only visible to whom he wants to be – walks on, this time only visible to Marjorie and whispers in her ear; swap them around! Then he disappears off stage again.)
Oh yes, thank you, dear!
(walks over to VERONICA, whispers into her ear while making her typical “swap it around” hand movement)
VERONICA
(to MARJORIE)
Oh Granny, that’s a brilliant idea! What would I do without you? Okay, here we go.
(SHE crosses her fingers, takes a deep breath and makes the wish)
I wish to swap this magical music box for Bobbie.
DICKIE
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE
(as VERONICA opens the box the notes start, she sings along, Nothing happens. There is silence, everybody is stunned.
(in the silence)
How stupid you are. You could have wished for anything, but you threw it all away for love, and that annoying boy. What a wasted opportunity!
VERONICA
(she shakes the box. Angrily)
Why are you not working? I can’t believe you fooled me again!
DICKIE
Haha, even better, game over. (evil laugh)
VERONICA
(Thomas walks on with a colourful jacket)
Thomas! This is all your fault! Why are you here? Where is Bobbie? You got us in this mess. What the hell is going on?
JEROME
Ah, the famous Thomas! How dare you show your face after causing my girl so much anguish?!
THOMAS
Now firstly let me apologise for everything but I need Veronica’s help.
VERONICA
Why would I want to help you?
THOMAS
I understand why you’re upset but I promise I’ll explain later…
MARJORIE
Thomas, has this got something to do with aunt Agatha?
THOMAS
Actually Marjorie it has. I’ve been looking for her for a very long time and now there’s a chance to get her back but I need Veronica to swap Agatha for the box as well.
VERONICA
Even if I wanted to… I couldn’t help you. We just tried it and it didn’t work.
THOMAS
What you have to realise is that this box is so much more powerful than any of us.
JEROME
Any of us, that can be true. (slowly) But what about all of us… together. Marjorie, don’t you remember “After once…”
MARJORIE
“…after twice…”
JEROME & MARJORIE
“…all ye together would be wise!”
VERONICA
NURZUR ANSICHT NICHTFÜRVERTRIEBAUFFÜHRUNGEN DURCH MUSIKUNDBÜHNE

THOMAS
Jerome, I knew it would be you you’re a genius…
JEROME
(puffs up like a peacock)
Come on, everybody, no wish has been fulfilled, it’s still the full moon. If anyone can do it… it’s us… let’s do this for love!
(they ALL – except DICKIE – join hands and move towards the audience.)
ALL (EXCEPT DICKIE)
We wish to swap this magical music box for Bobbie… (ALL looking at Thomas)
…and Agatha.
JEROME

VERONICA
VERONICA opens the box again. THEY all sing the 7 notes together in unison with the music box. There is silence.
#3 5 - THE MAGIC NOTES AND REAPPEAR
Suddenly the notes start to repeat as before in the magic forest. They echo around the venue, over and over. All the characters react like th e trees in the Magic Forest. The same theatrical effects as in the magic forest (or the characters waving about), the music box disappears in a puff of smoke and through that smoke BOBBIE and AGATHA (still a young woman!) reappear. There is silence, everybody is stunned.
Hallelujah, it worked!
NURZUR ANSICHT
BOBBIE
Bobbie … oh my God! I was afraid I would never see you again.
Ronnie, YOU did it! I missed you so much! You won’t believe what happened! (conversation goes on between them without audience hearing)
AGATHA
(SHE thinks this is immediately after her wish decades ago , and in Thomas’ universe) Thomas, I made it… so this is where you live?
THOMAS
No Agatha, this is where you live, it’s a long story, but before I get to that I need a hug You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this, and I promise you I’ll never leave you again.
AGATHA
That’s a story I’m looking forward to hearing. Anyway, how wonderful to see you. They embrace.
Is it always this crowded?
VERONICA
HELLO…. love birds! Thomas, you promised me an explanation. Somehow, I feel like I’ve been played.
THOMAS
(still hugging Agatha)
I’m sorry you got involved but when you became the new rightful owner of the box, I reckoned you might be prepared to use it, I saw my chance and took it. That’s why I came to the birthday party to set it all in motion!
VERONICA (indignantly)

DICKIE
NURZUR ANSICHT
Oh well, that’s alright then? As long as you got what you wanted! I nearly lost my mind because of you. I could have lost Bobbie forever! And what about Dickie? He could have ruined everything! That was close, wasn’t it? Only three notes to go!
THOMAS
I was never worried about Dickie. It wouldn’t have worked anyway because the notes only answer to its rightful owner. If they answer at all!
Damn box took me for a ride. Now let me up, this nonsense has gone on long enough.
BOBBIE
Develyn, you’re down and that’s where you’ll stay. Thanks to Thomas, I know all about what you did to my father. You’re gonna do some time for that. Big time!
(THE HEAVIES who have been held at „hairspray point“ by the SALON GIRLS realize the game is up and quickly change allegiances and turn their jackets inside out to show “M.S.” instead of “D.D.”)
THE HEAVIES

I didn’t murder him, I just provided him with what he wanted, he did the rest.
If that’s all you did, why did you make it look like suicide ? I know you wrote that note.
DICKIE
Yes, I wrote it, I mean, who wants to be involved in a suspicious death?
BOBBIE
(to Dickie)
You made us believe he didn’t want to be with us anymore !
DICKIE
Oh, poor little Bobbie…
RACHEL
(to DICKIE)
Have you any idea what you have done and how that made us feel? Ten years of feeling guilty and abandoned.
(turning to BOBBIE)
I’m sorry Bobbie, I should have paid more attention to what was going on in our lives.
(a moment of silence. THOMAS takes over)
THOMAS
Rachel don’t be so hard on yourself. I understand how you felt abandoned by someone you loved, and you were an easy pray for this devil in disguise. And Veronica, I’m sorry, but you only had to wait for a month, I’ve been waiting for seventy years
(AGATHA looks puzzled)
Let me assure you I was not going to let anything really bad happen to you and Bobbie And Dickie, you’re a crook, a disgrace, and now the whole world knows it.
DICKIE
The whole world! There’s no such thing as bad publicity. I guess it could be worse.

VERONICA

AGATHA
I am indeed Agatha.

Have we met before? Don’t tell me you are who I think you are…
MARJORIE
Yes, Aunt Agatha, don’t you recognize me? It’s Marjorie!
AGATHA
Little Marjorie? Well, I never… You certainly have grown up.
THOMAS
Well, I think we have all grown up in the last month. Luckily, we can put that all behind us now and start preparing for a double wedding.
