Helping Hands Settles Into New Baltimore Headquarters
By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff With a new office and warehouse, Helping Hands for Relief and Development USA (HHRD), is set to serve the DMV community more efficiently. This American Muslim organization is working in 51 countries with a budget of $45 million. The front office featured a glass encasement showcasing indigenous handicrafts made under the HHRD Skills Development Program- a socio-economic development program for women from vulnerable
and disaster hit communities. Neatly labeled open boxes line the warehouse so donations can be sorted and shipped. The far end of the warehouse hosts piles of bags that will be sorted by volunteers. Girl Scout troops, youth groups and middle school/ high school students are urged to come and volunteer at the warehouse. An open house was held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the warehouse on 1817 Whitehead Rd, Woodlawn, MD. The close proximity to several large masajid, as well the relative low cost per sq footage was the incentive that facilitated the move from
Ijamsville, MD for Khan. “We needed a larger space”, Khan says of this new 4600 sq ft office. “This is giving me flexibility. When people give in-kind donations of items like hospital beds, they don’t want to wait.” “We ship stuff and it is easier to get to the port from here,” he said. “There is a larger base of volunteers as we are now near a large Muslim community,” Dr. Calvin Ball, Howard County Council Chair, performed the ribbon cutting
ceremony, surrounded by a crowd of well wishers. He is the sponsor of the letter to the Maryland governor to welcome Syrian refugees to Howard County. “Our shared values of justice, celebrating diversity and reaching out that helping hand are shared values that link our humanity,” said Dr. Ball. “I thank you and honor your investment into the future of humanity.”

President Nominates First American Muslim for Federal Judiciary Source: Muslim Advocates On September 6, 2016, President Obama nominated Abid R. Qureshi to serve as a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. A litigation partner at Latham & Watkins LLP in Washington, DC, Mr. Qureshi is the first American Muslim to be nominated to serve on the federal judiciary. “I commend President Obama for taking this important step in continuing to pick the best and brightest from every community to serve as part of our nation’s judiciary,” said Farhana Khera, former counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and executive director of Muslim Advocates,
a national legal a d v o c a c y organization. “A judiciary that reflects the rich diversity of our nation helps ensure the fair and just administration of the law, and it is vital for American Muslims to be included. Mr. Qureshi’s profound commitment to the rule of law and justice for people of all backgrounds makes him an exceptional nominee.” Mr. Qureshi has a long and distinguished legal career. He has served as lead
counsel in numerous trials before state and federal courts across the country and has represented clients at the trial and appellate levels and before state and federal regulators and national and international arbitral tribunals. Mr. Qureshi has also served as Chair of Latham’s Global Pro Bono Committee since 2012, overseeing one of the world’s largest pro bono programs. His pro bono work has included working with Muslim Advocates on two cutting edge civil rights cases. Mr. Qureshi is the recipient of the “Champions of Justice” Award in 2012 by the National Law Journal’s Legal Times for upholding the profession’s core values
through public service, pro bono work, and advocacy for civil liberties. In 2014, he was included in the Washington, DC Super Lawyers list, which recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in their legal practice. Mr. Qureshi sits on the DC Bar Legal Ethics Committee. He is a graduate of Cornell University and Harvard Law School. While a number of American Muslims have served with distinction as judges at the state level, there has never been a Muslim judge at the federal trial or appellate levels. Muslim Advocates calls for a prompt hearing and full and fair consideration of this sterling nominee by the U.S. Senate.
Montgomery College Institutes Diversity Training After Takoma Campus Incident By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff When Casie*, a student at Montgomery College in Takoma Park, MD, walked past the group of pro-life activists tabling on campus, she was not expecting the outside group to be aggressively harassing college students. She heard the inflammatory statements being made about Islam and saw a few Muslim students intimidated by the anti-Muslim vitriol. One young man had tears in his eyes, heartbroken to hear
such viciousness on his college campus. The courageous young woman spoke and challenged the comments. And this is when the group turned on her. They started using verbally offensive language and aggressively shouted untruths about Islam. Soon after a professor stopped to see the cause of the ruckus. He sided with the outside protesters. Casie* informed security when she felt harassed but to no avail. Casie* then contacted CAIR and the organization started communicating with
When doing the right thing pays off Why Azzad didn't invest in private prisons By Fatima Iqbal Senior Investment Strategist

college administration. Margaret Latimer, the Vice President and Provost, was horrified according to CAIR and promised to do an investigation. This happened in early February. “On February 25, a student at that campus was reportedly subjected to hostile and intimidating behavior by an outside activist group that was disparaging Islam and Muslims, and by a professor supportive of the group’s rhetoric. The student, who is not Muslim, challenged the group’s disparaging comments and came to the defense of Muslim students

CAIR submitted a letter to the college calling for an apology from the professor involved, and urged administrators to pass specific measures to protect the student involved and prevent similar incidents in the future.”

Sometimes we hear from clients about these additional screens. “The traditional screens are already strict,” they tell us. “Why do you add more?” The answer is two-fold: because we believe it’s the right thing to do and we believe doing the right thing pays off in the long run. Yesterday we saw a great example of this when the DOJ made its announcement, dealing a major blow to the for-profit prison industry.
May 2015, a REIT (real estate investment trust) company called Corrections Corporation of America (NYSE: CXW) passed Azzad’s financial ratio screens. CCA is one of the biggest players in the private prison management industry, and is one of two private prison operators that is also a publicly traded company. Self-Defense Training Attracting More Muslim Women As Violent Attacks Continue Across Nation By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff On September 1, 2016, sixty-year-old Nazma Khanum, a Muslim woman of Bangladeshi descent, was murdered near her home in Queens, New York. Her husband was walking a block behind his wife who was dressed in traditional clothing with her head covered.
When a man started yelling anti-Muslim slurs at her in her neighborhood, she was scared. “What would I do if I got attacked while I was with the kids?” she questioned herself.
Police are still under investigating the crime and have made an arrest, but many members of the Muslim community fear the attack may be a hate crime, as none of her belonging were stolen. Many Muslim women report harassment and fear as they are visible targets in hijab: from the high schooler in San Diego who had her hijab ripped off her head, to a neighbor attacking a woman in Chicago after repeated calling her ‘ISIS’. Women
are often urged to travel in pairs and carry mace. “My mother lives alone and rarely ventures out alone,” says Namira Islam, Executive Director of the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative, who is also of Bangladeshi
descent. It is harder for women, especially elderly women. “Immigrant and Muslim identities intersect and Muslim women face a rabid kind of hate.” She thinks it is worse for the older generation- their kids are grown and many live alone, hesitant to go out by themselves.
“American Muslim immigrant aunties often feel like they don’t belong anywhere- they have been away from their birthplaces for so long and are made to feel less human because of their accents. Some feel uneducated and backward when they speak with an accent as a result of virulent anti immigration discourse,“says Islam. With the younger crowd it is a concern about kids and their safety,” she adds. Aqabah Karate, a martial arts studio operating in College Park, MD and a project of the Dar-us-Salaam community, is holding a series of self-defense seminars exclusively women in the community. Loud cries of ‘Oos’ ring through. “Step

The Omars are not new to business; they ran a successful 150 room hotel and renowned restaurant in Shanghai. The opening of the farm has sent a ripple of excitement in the Uyghur diaspora. They roam the pastures and are grass fed. There is enough brush and brambles for the goats which prefer it to grass. “We make sure they don't eat weeds,” she said. A major benefit of raising animals on pasture is that their products are healthier. Compared with feedlot meat, meat from grass-fed beef, bison, lamb and goats has less saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. It also has more vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin C, and a number of health-promoting fats, including omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid. Earlier in the academic year, the MSA on the Rockville campus also held a seminar on anti-Muslim bigotry. The Montgomery College professor and advisor to the Muslim Student Association says that the first time he heard about the Takoma Park campus incident was through the CAIR email listserv. “I was not informed by MC,” he adds. Dr Durrani says there have been other incidents where MSA members were exposed to Islamophobic remarks. In one incident, as students were putting posters up around the campus for an MSA hosted talk. They overheard students calling them “ISIS is also in MC.”

This decision was made last year, when the school board decided to schedule a teacher training day on the day of Eid, following the lead of Montgomery County. Each container costs three to five thousand dollars to ship depending on the destination and takes two months to prepare for shipment. “Our goal is to make it more efficient and send a container every month,” added Khan. A shipment of two trucks of shoes rolled in from Virginia Beach. Khan had received a call from the owner of a shoe store. The 5000 pairs of shoes were in mint condition but were out of fashion. Khan promised to make the 5 hour trip down to check out the merchandise. “They were good shoes retailing at $25.00,” he said. He drove one truck of shoes up himself earlier this week, commented a father of a volunteer about Khan. Nearly Half Of Refugees Entering The U.S. This Year Are Muslim By Phillip Connor
PEW Research Center, August 16, 2016
The U.S. has received 28,957 Muslim refugees so far in fiscal year 2016, or nearly half (46%) of the more than 63,000 refugees who have entered the country since the fiscal year began Oct. 1, 2015, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from the State Department’s Refugee Processing Center. That means that already this year the U.S. has admitted the highest number of Muslim refugees of any year since data on self-reported religious affiliations first became publicly available in 2002. Christians are the second-largest group of refugees to the U.S. so far this fiscal year; 27,556 Christian refugees have entered the country, nearly as many as the number of Muslim refugees. A slightly lower share of 2016’s refugees were Christian (44%) than Muslim, the first time that has happened since fiscal 2006, when a large number of Somali refugees entered the U.S. People seeking to enter the U.S. as refugees are processed overseas. As part of the process, they are asked a series of questions, including their religious affiliation. When their applications are approved, refugees travel to the U.S. to be resettled by nonprofit groups associated with the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Refugees to the U.S. are different from
Just two countries – Syria (8,511) and Somalia (7,234) – were the source of more than half of this year’s Muslim refugees. The rest are from Iraq (6,071), Burma (Myanmar) (2,554), Afghanistan (1,948) and other countries (2,639). asylum seekers, who claim asylum after already being in the U.S. or crossing into the U.S. via an airport or land border. Refugees make up a small percentage (about one-in-ten) of the roughly 1 million immigrants granted lawful permanent residency in the U.S. each year. Because the U.S. government does not keep track of the religion of new legal immigrants, it is not possible to say what share of all recent immigrants are Muslim. A 2013 Center report, however, estimated that as of 2012, roughly six-in-ten new legal immigrants were Christian, compared with one-in-ten who were Muslim. Just two countries – Syria (8,511) and Somalia (7,234) – were the source of more than half of this year’s Muslim refugees. The rest are from Iraq (6,071), Burma
(Myanmar) (2,554), Afghanistan (1,948) and other countries (2,639). Overall, a far larger total number of Christian refugees than Muslim refugees have entered the U.S. since fiscal 2002, the first year for which data on selfreported religious affiliations are publicly available. During the past 15 years, the U.S. has admitted 389,712 Christian refugees and 269,395 Muslim refugees, meaning that 46% of all refugees who have entered the U.S. during this time have been Christian while 32% have been Muslim. This year, about 6,552 refugees (10%) are members of faiths other than Islam or Christianity. More than 2,500 belong to Buddhist traditions while about another 1,500 are Hindu. A much lower number of
refugees in 2016 are atheists or claim no religious affiliation (338 refugees overall, or 1% of all refugees this year). As of mid-August, the U.S. has received more than 63,000 refugees, about 22,000 short of the 85,000 ceiling set by the Obama administration at the beginning of fiscal 2016. Burma (Myanmar) (10,464 as of mid-August), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (10,417), Syria (8,569) and Iraq (7,479) are the top origin countries of refugees arriving thus far in 2016. Together, refugees from these four nations represent more than half (58%) of all refugees admitted to the U.S. this fiscal year. The administration set the goal of resettling 10,000 Syrian refugees in the U.S. this year. As of the middle of August, the administration is about 86% of the way toward its goal [Update: This goal has now been met – TML] Among the 8,569 Syrian refugees received, 99% are Muslim and less than 1% are Christian. As a point of comparison, Pew Research Center estimated Syria’s religious composition to be 93% Muslim and 5% Christian in 2010. Note: This post has been updated to clarify that fiscal 2002 is the earliest year for which self-reported religious affiliation data for refugees are publicly available.

A publicly traded company has a responsibility to its shareholders to be profitable. But when a company is engaged in managing the incarceration of human beings, profitability can conflict with safety protocols, humane treatment, and rehabilitation programs.
Recent investigations by the DOJ and by journalists and human rights organizations have found that private prisons are overall less safe and less effective at rehabilitating inmates and reducing recidivism. A 2016 report by the DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General found that privately operated prisons “incurred more safety and security incidents per capita" than comparable prisons run by the government, including higher rates of assault. Azzad's investment team decided not to invest in CCA. In addition, we added a screen to prohibit any future investment in private prison companies because of human rights concerns. Fast forward to August 18, 2016, when Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates announced that the federal government will end its use of private prisons, saying: “They simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs, and resources; they do not save substantially on costs; and … they do not maintain the same level of safety and security." Activists Pushing for Divestment from Israel Face Travel Risks, Deportation By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff On July 17, 2016, a group of American human rights delegates were deported from Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. This was a predecessor to a move by the apartheid nation to remove all Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) activists In August, a new Israeli government task force was formed to deport all BDS activists in the country. "Deporting BDS activists in order to silence them and undermine their principled support for Palestinian human rights is not only anti-democratic; it is yet another incident of Israel shooting itself in the foot. If anything, we expect such acts of heightened repression to boost support for boycotting Israel back in these activists' home countries," stated Abdulrahman Abunahel, a spokesperson for the Palestinian BDS National Committee. “As a human rights attorney in the US, I am outraged by this level of blatant discrimination. Working on human rights and criminal defense in the US, I see these patterns of discrimination in my work every day, where US police officers and security personnel routinely train with and share tactics and profiling systems with Israel. The deportation of a majority Muslim and people of color group is an example of how Israel engages in Islamophobia and racism, and silences debate by preventing the world from hearing the testimony of those who bear witness to the plight of Palestinians,” says Bina Ahmad. Ahmad, is an attorney from Manhattan where she has worked for the past 11 years as public defender. Her focus has

been international human rights work and animal right law. She was one of the key legal adviser during the New York session of the Russell Tribunal. She is a long time Palestinian supporter. “I worked during law school in Al Haq in Ramallah,” says Ahmed. She also worked at the BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights, which is an independent, human rights non-profit organization. Ahmed lived in the West Bank in 2004 and revisited the area in 2005. “I have always travelled through Tel Aviv, except the first time I went, we entered through the Egyptian border through a bus. Every other time I have entered through Tel Aviv.” Monitored from D.C. to Ethiopia, Ahmed went through special security. “I was picked for secondary security clearance of my name before I could even get a boarding pass,” she shares. Flying through Ethiopia, Ahmed was made to go through three separate security checkpoints there. “Israel has additional agents in several world countries,” she shares. “This [one] checkpoint seemed to be set up especially set up for the delegation. All the people with Muslims names or who looked Muslim were brought through this checkpoint.”
She says her legal and political life became more public and prominent since the last time she travelled and the internet is wider tool that is used to monitor activists. “Israel is increasing surveillance on people of color, Muslims and activists. The treatment is getting harsher. Israeli power only grows and so do the rates of denial of entry,” says Ahmed. Ramah Kudaimi is a Syrian-American
who is active in American Muslim spaces. She was travelling with an indigenous and people of color delegation including immigration rights activists, Black Lives Matter activists, focused on the reemergence movement for black liberation in the country. “People are becoming politically aware. Palestine is taking center stage and this progressive cause too touchy of an issue for many liberal activists. Palestine needs to be put in the center. Palestinian liberation is connected to the liberation of the Black people,” she elaborated. “I was expecting a hard time getting in; I didn’t let myself get excited about getting in. I went through Jordan, [knowing] that I was going to be interrogated on the bridge. I chose not to go through the airport, as i would be deported back to the U.S., with the bus [route] I just get to go back Jordan,” says Kudaimi, knowing that she was visibly Muslim. “I chose the bridge, thinking where am I going to get treated better. People have to take this into consideration. That is not what you have to do when you are traveling to a place that calls itself the beacon of western civilization in Israel,” says Kudaimi. "The woman interrogating me called me a terrorist in the main waiting area ... where there were plenty of people around, accusing me of coming to do bombings and threatening to tell the U.S. government this," said Ramah Kudaimi, Director of Grassroots Organizing, US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. Ahmed describes a harrowing experience when she landed Tel Aviv. After being interrogated and jailed in a ‘filthy deportation center cell without water’, she was deported back to the United States along with 4 other activists.
Some were barred from entering Israel or the occupied Palestinian territories for the next 10 years. Deplaned in Ethiopia, without a boarding pass or her passport, Ahmed was terrified. “Ethiopian Airlines and the Israeli government pulled my ticket. My family and friends were frantically calling the U.S. embassy!” she says. In the end she was charged $2200 for a one way ticket to - stiffed by the Israeli government. The United states and Israel have a visa waiver. “You get the visa at the border, this was a violation of the visa waiver program,” says the public defender. As activists reached out the the United States Consulate, “some officials made comments indicating they had no power over the treatment of U.S. citizens held at the airport despite visa agreements between Israel and the United States,” reads a statement. Kudaimi has been banned for five years. “The US government is an active partner in Israel's war crimes against Palestinians, providing billions in military aid every year,”she says. “Our experience traveling to witness the reality of life for Palestinians is proof once again that both countries are plagued with institutionalized racism, Islamophobia, and militarism." “My tax dollars are used in Israel and my government can’t do anything about it,” says Kudaimi. “Any person giving taxes – you are complicit in the occupation of the Palestinian people. It is essential that Americans take action locally and be in the struggle of the Palestinians. You are complicit in the oppression. You have a more direct role than other people aboard,” she emphasized.

Where the Children Sleep
A photo exhibit about refugee children in Europe and the Middle East by Magnus Wennman A girl afraid to close her eyes. A boy without a bed. A child who dreams of when bedtime didn’t bring terror. More than two million children have been forced from their homes by the war in Syria. Refugee children in neighbouring countries or making journeys through Europe show us where they sleep while they await an uncertain future.
Swedish photographer Magnus Wennman, winner of two World Press Photo Awards, has partnered with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency to raise awareness about refugee children.UNHCR, in close collaboration with Fotografiska - The Swedish Museum of Photography, has brought his award-winning exhibit to the United States for the first time.
3) Iman, who fled Syria, has pneumonia and a chest infection. This is her third day in this hospital bed. “She sleeps most of the time now. Normally she’s a happy little girl, but now she’s tired. She runs everywhere when she’s well. She loves playing in the sand,” says her mother Olah, 19.
1) Farah, who fled Syria, loves soccer. Her dad tries to make soccer balls for her using anything he can find, but they don’t last long. Every night, he puts Farah and her big sister Tisam, 9, to bed hoping that tomorrow will bring them a proper soccer ball to play with. All other dreams seem to be beyond his reach, but he is not giving up on this one.
4) There’s a difference between closing your eyes and sleeping, as six-year-old Gulistan knows. She prefers to shut her eyes and just pretend, because every time she falls asleep, the nightmares start. “I don’t want to sleep here. I want to sleep at home,” she says. She misses the pillow she had in their home in Kobane, Syria. Sometimes she lies against her mother and uses her as a pillow.
2) Mohammed loves houses. Back home in Aleppo, Syria, he used to enjoy walking around the city looking at them. Now, many of his favourite buildings have been destroyed by the war. Lying in his hospital bed, he wonders whether he will ever fulfill his dream of becoming an architect. “The strangest thing about war is that you get used to feeling scared. I wouldn’t have believed that,” says Mohammed.

5) When Syrian refugee Selam, 37, puts Esra, Esma and Sidra to bed, she takes comfort in the knowledge that her children are safe, and won’t be attacked in the night. What saddens her is the fact that they often wake up distraught because they constantly dream about their father, who disappeared after being abducted. “I often dream that Daddy is bringing me candy,” says Sidra.
6) Five-year-old Tamam is scared of her pillow. She cries every night at bedtime. The air raids on her hometown of Homs, Syria, usually took place at night, and although she has been sleeping in exile for nearly two years now, she still doesn’t realize that her pillow is not the source of danger.
7) Eight-year-old Maram had just come home from her school in Syria when the rocket hit her house. A piece of the roof landed right on top of her. Her mother took her to a local hospital, but she had to be airlifted across the border to Jordan. The head trauma caused a brain hemorrhage, and for the first 11 days Maram was in a coma. She is now conscious, but she has a broken jaw and can’t speak.

8) Ralia and Rahaf live on the streets of Beirut. They are from Damascus, where a grenade killed their mother and brother. The girls and their father have been sleeping on the street for a year. They huddle close together on their cardboard boxes. Rahaf says she is scared of “bad boys”, at which Ralia starts crying.
9) Moyad and his mother needed to buy flour to make a spinach pie. Hand-in-hand, they were on their way to the market in Daraa, Syria, when they walked past a taxi that was carrying a car bomb. Moyad’s mother died instantly. The boy, who has been airlifted to Jordan, has shrapnel lodged in his head, back, and pelvis.
10) Walaa wants to go home. She had her own room in Aleppo, Syria, she tells us. There, she never used to cry at bedtime. Here, in the informal settlement, she cries every night. Resting her head on the pillow is horrible, she says, because nighttime is horrible. That was when the attacks happened. By day, Walaa’s mother often builds a little house out of pillows, to teach her that they are nothing to be afraid of.

When the refugees’ boat started to sink, they were picked up by the Italian coastguard.
11) Abdullah has a blood disease. For the last two days, he has been sleeping outside the central station in Belgrade. He witnessed the killing of his sister in their home in Daraa, Syria. “He is still in shock and has nightmares every night,” says his mother. Abdullah is exhausted and is in poor health, but his mother does not have any money to buy medicine for him. 14) Amir was born a Syrian refugee. His mother, Shahana, 32, believes her son was traumatized in the womb. “Amir has never spoken a single word,” she says. In the plastic tent where the family now lives, Amir has no toys, but he plays with whatever he can find on the ground. “He laughs a lot, even though he doesn’t talk,” says Shahana.
12) It is after midnight when Ahmed falls asleep in the grass. The adults are still awake, formulating plans for how they will continue their journey through Hungary. Ahmed is six years old, and he carries his own bag over the long stretches that his family walks by foot. “He is brave and only cries sometimes in the evenings,” says his uncle, who has taken care of Ahmed since his father was killed in their hometown of Deir ez-Zor in northern Syria.

This is only part of their journey after fleeing Syria three months ago. The girl’s mother lays her thin shawl over her daughter on the ground, and Juliana calms down. A few meters away from their resting place, feet are shuffling by in a seemingly never-ending flow of people. As soon as evening comes, Juliana’s family will take their chance to cross the border and try to enter Hungary.

16) Shiraz was three months old when she was struck with a severe fever. The doctor diagnosed her with polio, and advised her parents not to spend too much money on medicine for the girl who “didn’t have a chance.” Then the war in Syria began. Her mother, Leila, starts crying when she describes how she wrapped her daughter in a blanket and carried her over the border from Kobane, Syria to Turkey. Shiraz, who can’t talk, was given a wooden cradle in the refugee camp. She lies there, day and night.
17) Lamar left her dolls, toy train, and ball back home in Baghdad, Iraq. She often talks about these items when home is mentioned. One bomb changed everything. Her family was on its way to buy food when a bomb was dropped close to their house. “It was not possible to live there anymore,” says Lamar’s grandmother, Sara. After two attempts to cross the sea from Turkey in a small rubber boat, they have made it to the Hungarian border. Now Lamar sleeps on a blanket in the forest, scared, frozen, and sad.
18) Mahdi is 18 months old. He has only experienced war and flight. He sleeps deeply despite the chaotic situation at the border.

19) Even sleep is not an escape for Ahmad; this is when the terror returns. He was at home when a bomb hit his family’s house in Idlib, Syria. Shrapnel hit him in the head, but he survived. His younger brother did not. The family had lived with war as their closest neighbour for several years, but without a home, they had no choice – they were forced to flee. Now Ahmad lays on the asphalt among thousands of other refugees along the highway leading to Hungary. This is day 16 of their flight, and the family has slept in bus shelters, on the road, and in the forest, Ahmad’s father explains.
20) Shehd loves to draw, but recently, all of her drawings have had the same theme: weapons. “She saw them all the time, they are everywhere,” explains her mother while the little girl sleeps on the ground. Now she does not draw at all. The family did not bring paper or crayons with them when they fled. Shehd does not play anymore, either. The escape has forced children to become adults and share concern for the future. The family has had difficulty finding food during their journey, and some days they have had to make do with the apples they pick from trees along the road. If they had known how hard the journey would be, they would have chosen to stay and risk their lives in Syria.

Reflections on the Life of Prophet Ibrahim ‘Alyhissalaam By Faqir Hussain Shakir Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was born over four thousand years ago in Uur, a city situated in the south east of Iraq/Arabian peninsula with an estimated population of well over a quarter of a million people. Modern archaeological findings report that Uur was a thriving city ruled by king Nimrod. There were pagan cults and a variety of deities associated with sun, moon, stars and many other phenomena that were worshipped by the people at the time. Nimrod was also worshipped as one of many deities by his people under his strict religio-political and economic system and this is not something new. Every empire builder of the past and more so of today has always used brute force to coerce people to prostrate in front of him. Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) found himself in the midst of “Shirk” (polytheism). So much so, that his own father Aazer used to worship statues that he made with his own hands and also to sell them to others. It was a good thriving business. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was granted the office of Prophet hood in his young age through God’s Mercy. His mission was to turn his people from idol worship to God’s worship alone. He started his mission by talking to his own father who was outraged and threatened to throw him out of his home. From his father’s point of view, Ibrahim should have towed the line. “You are either with us or against us!” as the age old saying of brute rulers of the past and present goes. If you think seriously, the new and the old human agendas, perceptions etc are not that much different despite a distance of several thousand years. Prophet Ibrahim presented an open challenge to change the status quo and to replace it with God’s Will and Guidance. The sociopolitical and religio-economic leaders and their well-established institutions came out in full force to silence this new revolutionary voice as they were fearful of losing their grip on power.
....
“ O, Ibrahim, Stop! I do not want the life of your son. It was a test of your love and obedience to Me. You have obeyed my commandment even when it was given to you in your dream. Now here is a ram, offer it for sacrifice in place of your son”.
Every prophet in every age has been opposed, even killed, by the ruling classes of his time. The opposition to Prophet Ibrahim’s revolutionary Message got worse throughout the land and eventually the ruling authorities decided to burn him alive both as an example to others and in order to safeguard their own interests and apparently to secure the public law and order. The blazing fire, by a divine miracle, did not even touch the Prophet. It went out or turned into bed of flowers according to some traditions. The Bible, surprisingly, does not even mention this
part of Prophet Ibrahim’s life but Talmud, the Jewish holy book, does go into some details of Prophet Ibrahim’s earlier life. God commanded Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to leave his homeland with his wife Sarah and nephew Lot (pbut) for the land of Palestine where he continued to spread the Message of God for the rest of his life. When he said farewell to his homeland, he prayed to God to grant him a righteous son (Surah 37 Assafaat: verse 100). The fulfilment of this prayer was deferred by God for many years till
a time when he took another wife named Hajirah who gave birth to a son named Ishmael (peace be upon him) when Ibrahim was 86 years old (according to Genesis 16:16). The son was a reward granted to Ibrahim by God for his long patience and perseverance. However, there still remained one final act to test Ibrahim’s steadfastness and resolve on the Path of God. Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded by God in his dream to sacrifice his first born son Ishmael (peace be upon him) who was about 12 or 13 years old at the time. Dream of a Prophet is much more than a mere dream. Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) talked with his son about this unsettling dream. It is amazing to observe the resolve of his son who said, “O, father, do what your Lord has commanded you to do. You will, by the Will of God, find me among the most patient ones”. (Assafaat 37: verse 102). Ibrahim was grateful to God that his prayers for a “righteous son” were truly answered by God. And now he was ready to sacrifice his first born as God had commanded. It is almost impossible to imagine the depth of Ibrahim’s love and obedience to his God. Nothing could stand between him and his God – not even his only son who could have been a pillar of support for ageing Ibrahim. At the last moment, God intervened and said, “ O, Ibrahim, Stop! I do not want the life of your son. It was a test of your love and obedience to Me. You have obeyed my commandment even when it was given to you in your dream. Now here is a ram, offer it for sacrifice in place of your son”. It was such a momentous and an unprecedented event and God appreciated it so much that it became an integral part of Islamic Hajj for ever and ever. There are a number of lessons to be

learned from the life of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
21) At the front of the border between Serbia and Hungary, next to the 13-foot-tall iron gate, Sham is laying in his mother’s arms. Just a few inches behind them lies the Europe they are so desperately trying to reach. They now wait for a better future, along with thousands of other refugees.
22) Abdul Karim Addo bought a ferry ticket to Athens with the last of his money. Now he spends the night in Omonoia Square, where hundreds of refugees arrive every day. He is able to borrow a telephone to call home to his mother in Syria, but he will not tell her how bad things are. “She cries and is scared for my sake, and I don’t want to worry her more.” He unfolds his blanket in the middle of the square and curls up in fetal position. “I dream of two things: to sleep in a bed again, and to hug my younger sister.”
1. 1 The first lesson is “abstaining from Shirk” ie polytheism or joining partners with Almighty God. Shirk divides and Tawhid or the Oneness of God unites mankind. Prophet Ibrahim feared none except his God. He let no fear enter into his heart. Today, we are living in an environment of different fears. We fear the “governments of big brother”, we have a fear of being sacked from our job or lose our business, we fear to lose our social place or standing in the society, we fear individual or state terrorism, we fear the criticism of our friends, families or even our own grown-up children if we remind them of their religious obligations to God. In our hearts, all kinds of fears reside except the fear of God. The reality is that no “other” fear can dare to live in a heart where God’s reverential fear lives. This is the heart that becomes so fearless that it fears none except God and as a result becomes a heart which is the most fearsome, the most brave, the most free and the most kind. This was the heart of Prophet Ibrahim. We are Muslims by faith but the day we understand the deeper meaning of Prophet Ibrahim’s symbolic sacrifice and bring it to the forefront of our conscious mind, our thought process will change and we will become free from all the worldly fears.
tribulations in this world to hurt or grieve us but rather to test us in our resolve, steadfastness and trust in Him in order to raise us up to the higher moral and spiritual levels. 3. Lesson number three is that when we are in difficulties God shows us a way out of them provided one is patient and has trust in Him. 4. Lesson number four is that God has no need of our wealth and other valuable possessions. In reality, everything belongs to Him in the first place. However, He wants us to spend “His wealth given to us as a trust by Him” willingly, on His Path and for His good pleasure leading to a higher reward for us in the Hereafter. The final lesson is stupendous. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is revered equally by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. Ibrahim and his household have been guiding mankind for ever and ever without people being aware of it. His two sons Ishmael and Issac were prophets, his grandson Jacob was a prophet, his great grandson Joseph was a prophet and then they were followed by hundreds of prophets from Ibrahim’s household including Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, John the baptist, Jesus and finally Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Seal of all the prophets (peace be upon them all). This is the reward that God has granted to Prophet Ibrahim in perpetuity. Can there be a better reward than this? --------------------Source: fhshakir-islamicwritings@ hotmail.com
2. The second lesson is that God does not put us through trials and

“Empowering language is great, but at the same time, [Muslims] are being killed in their homes and in their cabs. I feel like the self defense classes— in an scary world— is a sense of illusion. A self defense seminar may make some people more comfortable but there are limits to self defense in front of guns and knives with intent to do harm,” she sighs.

forward. Push, step forward with right leg, push at the elbow,” Ryhana Dawood is on the mats ‘attacking’ a young woman. “Block, Shock, Grab and strike,” she instructs them on the technique if an attacker grabs a woman’s hijab from the front. “Get big and get loud,” she urges the women to use their voice as a weapon. “People don't want to attack people who are loud.” she yells. A certified black belt in two disciplines, Dawood is founder of MARTIAL SMARTS, a non-profit organization that encourages confidence and empowerment for women through free self-defense workshops in the Greater Toronto Area. Recently she was featured in a short film, called the Good Fight shown at the DC Film Festival. She believes that martial arts is a way of life and integrates well with her faith. Don’t walk around distracted, and checking the backseat of the car before getting in are some tips that Dawood shares with the students. Shahnaz, a mother from Laurel, is in the basement where the Aqabah self defense class is taking place with her two daughters, 15 and 14. “I used to watch Bruce Lee when I was a child in Bangladesh wished we had these opportunities growing up,” she said. Her daughters are timid and she wants to introduce them to this sport which is the ‘best for protection and exercise.’ Shamma, 26, from Bowie, is a mother of three. She joined Aqabah to ‘get fit and have time for herself’. When a man
started yelling anti-Muslim slurs at her in her neighborhood, she was scared. “What would I do if I got attacked while I was with the kids?” she questioned herself. She thought the self-defense class was very helpful. “It will give you confidence to deal with this type of situation,” she said. Ayesha Akhtar, the black belt instructor at Aqabah Karate, says Nazma Khanum’s death case is very important and everyone needs to know about the situation. “Allah has written everyone’s time but we [need] awareness of the issue.” Akhtar is a mother of six children and started training in 2008, after her 5th child. “In Bangladesh, I was raised in a very protective environment, it was hard to break that barrier. Through martial arts, I got to meet people. Non-Muslims would see 60 students from Aqabah Karate at the tournament. It is not easy being presented in hijab in front of judges. It was a very positive thing for me,”she shares. Since the community she lives in wanted separate classes for men and women, all classes at Aqabah are completely segregated. “She was attacked near her house, our sisters should beware of [their]
surrounding, whether you are on a college campus or outside,” says Akhtar. Womens safety is not prioritized in our communities, says Akhtar. “It is hard to convince leadership that this is an issue. InshaAllah, I am hoping that the entire community is reached and all the high school girls are trained to defend themselves,” noted Akhtar. Teenagers, 50-year-old women who lived alone, and single mothers from DC have attended the three seminars held so far. “We teach situational awareness,” says Akhtar. “Fake it til you make even if you are scared,” she shares tips from her own teachers with the students, ”and don't let them see that you are scared.” Akhtar will be holding more free seminars in other Islamic Centers around the DC Metro, along with Sensei Jalees Muzikir. She started the seminars after she saw news reports and Muslim women sharing stories of harassment on Facebook. “We focus on some Muslim specific challenges, but we cannot have heavy men attack us like they do in RAD classes,” she stated, commenting on other self defense classes offered at universities. Namira Islam says that sometimes the language surrounding the self defense classes make her uncomfortable.
“That, this,” she says with a pause, “this is all that we can do in this type of hate.” “It is terrible that it is on us to keep ourselves safe,” she adds. “The climate has changed in North America,” says Dawood. “Before Trudeau, we had Stephen Harper and his [Trump-esque] nonsense,” she adds, about her own country. There are concerns by women about the safety in masajid, as so many of the women entrances are unlit and often in the back or side of the building. “We need more safety in our masajid,” says Dawood. “We cannot expect others to keep our women safe if we don’t give them a place of respect in our places of worship,” she stressed. “We cannot live in fear, we have to tie the camel,” says Ayesha Akhtar. “Training is not a guarantee that you will never be attacked,’ she says, “ but you will have some techniques.” “Many Muslim girls [in our community] are very shy; we teach them to use their voice use your voice they don't want use their voice to talk loudly. Some of them are very shy, even in front of other women. Very important for them.” Aqabah Karate holds classes on Mondays and Wednesdays 6:15 PM-7:15 PM, at the Al Huda School. The seminar is at the Islamic Center of Laurel on October 1, 2016.

If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?” The people said, “No filth would remain on him whatsoever.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, “That is like the fi ve daily prayers: Allah wipes away the sins by them.” ---Hadith in Sahih al Bukhari and Muslim

True Richness Is The Richness Of The Heart, No Matter What Happens Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “O Abu Dharr, do you say an abundance of possessions is wealth?” I said yes. The Prophet said, “Do you say a lack of possessions is poverty?” I said yes. The Prophet repeated this three times, then he said, “Wealth is in the heart and poverty is in the heart. Whoever is wealthy in his heart will not be harmed no matter what happens in the world. Whoever is impoverished in his heart will not be satisfied no matter how much he has in the world. Verily, he will only be harmed by the greed of his own soul.” (Source: al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 1618. Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani)

The Statue of Liberty Was Originally a Muslim Woman "The New Colossus" was actually born in Egypt By Erin Blakemore SMITHSONIAN.COM The United States has debated immigration since the country's founding, and the Statue of Liberty—a potent symbol for immigrants—is often invoked as an argument for why we should usher in those who seek safety and opportunity with open arms. A littleknown fact about Lady Liberty adds an intriguing twist to today's debate about refugees from the Muslim world: As pointed out by The Daily Beast’s Michael Daly in a recent op-ed, the statue itself was originally intended to represent a female Egyptian peasant as a Colossus of Rhodes for the Industrial Age. That might be surprising to people more familiar with the statue’s French roots than its Arab ones. After all, the statue’s structure was designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel (yes, that Eiffel), and Lady Liberty was given to the United States by France for its centennial to celebrate the alliance of the two countries formed during the French Revolution. The statue’s designer, FrédéricAuguste Bartholdi, was also French, but he found inspiration in a very different place: Egypt. In 1855, he visited Nubian monuments at Abu Simbel, which feature tombs guarded by gigantic colossus figures. Bartholdi became fascinated by the ancient architecture, developing what the National Park Service calls a “passion for large-scale public monuments and colossal structures.” Eventually, he channeled that passion into a proposal for the
inauguration of the Suez Canal. Bartholdi envisioned a colossal monument featuring a robe-clad woman representing Egypt to stand at Port Said, the city at the northern terminus of the canal in Egypt. To prep for this undertaking, Barry Moreno, author of multiple books about the statue, writes that Bartholdi studied art like the Colossus, honing the concept for a figure called Libertas who would stand at the canal. “Taking the form of a veiled peasant woman,” writes Moreno, “the statue was to stand 86 feet high, and its pedestal was to rise to a height of 48 feet.” Early models of the statue were called “Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia.” Edward Berenson, author of Statue of Liberty: A Translatlantic Story, writes that Bartholdi’s concept morphed from “a gigantic female fellah, or Arab peasant” into “a colossal goddess.” But Egypt, which had invested enormous amounts of time and money into the landmark canal, was not as eager about Bartholdi’s idea. Isma’il Pasha, the reigning khedive, rejected the plan as too costly. Eventually, a 180-foot tall lighthouse was installed at Port Said instead. But Bartholdi was not discouraged. He eventually repurposed his concept into “Liberty Enlightening the World”—the official name for the statue that has been overlooking New York Harbor since 1886.
