Why a Baltimore City Imam Broke Fast In Masajid Across the DMV Earlier this year I was a presenter at the 2017 ICNA conference in Baltimore, Maryland. The title of one of my two workshops was, “Looking Inward – Strategies to Mitigate Race Issues Within the Muslim Community”. Fairfax Muslimah Vies for Seat on School Board

By Hena Zuberi | Muslim Link Staff Reporter Abrar Omeish grew up in the Fairfax County School System and now she is running for a seat on the Fairfax County School Board.

If chosen, Omeish will contest candidates in a special election in late August for an atlarge seat, vacated by Republican school board member, Jeanette Hough. The position of School Board Member is nonpartisan, but the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) can choose to endorse a candidate by vote of its membership at a Special Meeting on June 23rd, 2017 at the Fairfax County Government Center.

Omeish hopes to be their candidate.

She has been endorsed by Congressman Jim Moran.

“Abrar Omeish is an extraordinary example of what the future can be for all of us.

This is a young woman who is not only highly intelligent and well-educated, but has the courage of her convictions. I know because she worked for me and stood out as a person with all the characteristics of leadership that you could possibly hope to find in a person of her age. I strongly endorse her for the School Board because

she both has the perspective of the students but the maturity of the parents and administrators,” read his endorsement.

A 2017 graduate from Yale University, Omeish is passionate about equity and prosperity for students and teachers. She is the only FCPS alumna running and has the most experience with student government and School Board affairs. She has served on several school board committees and received the Student Peace Award of Fairfax County.

Eldest of four siblings, Omeish comes from an practicing Muslim household. She is the daughter of Libyan immigrants- her father, Esam Omeish, is a surgeon and her mother teaches at community college, she tells the Muslim Link. Eight years ago, her father Esam Omeish, ran as a candidate for 35th District of VA House of Delegates.

with only a handful of students in 2010, the tutoring program has since grown to involve over 1000 community members at nineteen centers across Northern Virginia and DC. “Throughout my schooling, I have been blessed with parents who could provide for me and who believed in me. I had mentors who had higher expectations for me than I had of myself, pushing me to do better than I could have imagined. I had wonderful teachers who taught me, in reasonably-sized classes, critical thinking and instilled important skills in me,” she says.

However, she is worried about the many students throughout the county are left behind or forgotten because access is only thought of in a particular way. “My heart leans towards giving a child the attention they deserve,” she says.

Through her internships at FCPS, leading a county wide anti-bullying effort and and her work with GIVE she has experienced how many demographics are under-served and their needs are under-funded. “Many

At seven and eight, they look forward to Ramadan and Eid with eagerness. They are at Tarbiyah Academy to wrap Eid presents for children whose families may be going through hard times.

"It makes me feel sad that there's kids in the world that wouldn't have Eid presents but it also makes me happy because I gave a gift and now one more kid will have a more special Eid." Ibraheem Amlani. Heena reminisces about Eid growing up in an area where there were not many Muslims. “I am glad that kids today get a more wholesome Ramadan experience,” she says.

TA held an Islamic Book fair in the main hall. Children were wrapping presents and making cards in the gym. A day earlier the Diyanet Center held a toy drive and Imaam Center in Silver Spring is also hosting one. In Virgina, Mclean, Ashburn, Vienna, Leesburg all held toy drives at Islamic and community centers. Most gifts are gender specific, but the ones wrapped in balloon wrapping paper are gender neutral. Toy weapons are not accepted.

A Waste-Not-Want-Not Ramadan Iftar with the Green Muslims Green ideas are slowly but surely making their way to area masajid. At the Islamic Society of Baltimore, water fountains were retrofitted with water bottle filler, complete with a running digital counter showing how many disposable water bottles were eliminated by congregants filling up. Tens of thousands of plastic water bottles are thrown in the trash during Ramadan in the DMV region.

Much of this phenomena is due to the “cult of perfection” where only “blemish free” produce can enter the market place. So produce rots in fields or is thrown in landfills due to unrealistic cosmetic standards. About 60 million tons of produce worth about $160 billion is wasted by retailers and consumers every year—one third of all foodstuffs, according to one government report—while 5-10 percent of the population remains hungry.

Look into any garbage can after an iftar and you will find the bin filled with wasted food and disposables. Allah the Sustainer produces enough for every human on Earth, but human mismanagement leave millions starving.

Some concerned Muslims strive to change the status quo. “2017 marks 10 years since a group friends that eventually established Green Muslims planned the first zero-waste iftar aka leftar in Malcolm X Park. This year's leftar is really special to us and we plan to make it more festive to mark our 10 years of doing environmental outreach in the DMV,” reads an invite from Green Muslims.

As a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, he witnessed three Ramadans. He tries to be ‘green’ and loves the friendly environment of the open community leftar. “This is a good way to raise awareness about ways we can change our daily routine,” he says, as organizers run a quiz and give away zero trash table ware. Communities can rent a zero trash party set from GM, saving on the costs of buying disposable plates, protecting our planet, reducing the size of land fills, and inspiring environ-

mental stewardship.

Muna Rehman, a Houstonian transplanted to DC, has been key in revitalizing the Green Muslims this year. As Director of Outreach, she is working on coordinating with Islamic Centers in the region.

Osama Abdul Salaam came to the leftar last year and really enjoyed it. He doesn’t cook during Ramadan so did not have any leftovers to bring so he brought some

Noura von Briesen, a engineer in the construction industry, brought a lima bean and vegetable casserole which tasted like stuffing. She hadn't met many Muslims in the city and the leftar provided her with the opportunity to socialize. “I recycle religiously,” she says. “I don’t waste food and hate using disposable dishes.” It bothers her when people do not care about the environment. She composted growing up.

Her father was a ‘treehugger’ and is a big influence in her life. “We as Muslims are so materialistic, even though we are supposed to take care of the environment,” she added.

Harford Teen Punched, Told to ‘Go Back’ to Where He Came From by 60-Year Old Driver

By Muslim Link Staff Dawar Aamir is a 19-year-old Maryland Muslim teen studying at Harford Community College, where he is a performing arts major. He wears horn rimmed glasses and has a short beard. Aamir grew up ‘with white people’ in Bel Air. Md.. Earlier in the month of February, white supremacy fliers were found on driveways through Fountain Green, east of his neighborhood. He never thought it would affect him.

On February 27, 2017, he was making a turn on Route 22 to get to the Wawa. He had the right of way. A man in a company van, Charles Valle Jr.nearly collided in him and started harassing him. Amir ignored it and proceeded to his workplace.

He was then threatened, verbally and physically assaulted, and told to "go back to where he came from."

“I share this story not to express what happened to me specifically but to make aware to my friends, teachers, anyone I've crossed paths with that what you hear about the rise of these attacks on racial prejudice is real it has happened right here in Bel Air, MD in broad daylight,” says Aamir. “ He saw it as a “wake up call”and hopes others can learn from this incident and many like this that happened every day. “I ask my Muslim brothers and sisters that God forbid if you are in this situation do not add to the fuel of hate but to only get the information needed to make people like this deal with the

Racism And Ramadan RACISM

>> continued from pg 1 of you…”. The following is not meant to insult any individual or group, nor is it a social experiment, but a socializing encouragement.

One of the definitions of a racist is “a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.” Racism or racist behavior is not a part of the Islamic framework. In the following example the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) frowned upon racist behavior amongst his companions, Abu Dharr, the leader of the tribe of Ghifar, and one who accepted Islam in its early days, narrates: Once I was conversing with Bilal. Our conversation gave way to a dispute. Angry with him, the following insult burst from my mouth: 'You cannot comprehend this, O son of a black woman!'

As Islam expressly forbade all kinds of racial, tribal and color discrimination, Bilal was both upset and greatly angered. A while later a man came and told me that

honorable of men is he who is the most pious and upright in conduct. Is it right to defame a believer just because he is black?'

Abu Dharr felt profound remorse. He went straight to Bilal's house and, putting his head on the threshold, said: 'This head will not rise from here until the blessed feet of Bilal tread on the face of foolish, impolite Abu Dharr.' Bilal responded: 'That face deserves to be kissed, not trodden upon', and forgave Abu Dharr.

One of the suggestions that I had made, to the attendees of my workshop, was that I had encouraged them, during the month of Ramadan, to visit other masajid and eat the iftar there. I decided to put into practice what I had encouraged them to do. So began my Ramadan 2017/1438 journey to come out of what may be considered “racial masjid comfort zone” and break bread and pray with my Muslim brothers and sisters in close proximity to Baltimore City.

I had traveled a total of approximately 260 miles just to break my fast with my brothers and sisters at other masajid and eat iftar with them. In addition, I also did iftar in Baltimore City at Masjid Al Ihsan on June 18th. All of the masajid/centers I had visited were very welcoming and merely treated me, as expected, like their brother in Islam. There was a beautiful ethnic mix at each iftar venue and a great sense of brotherhood, smiling, talking and eating together. One brother had said jokingly to me, because he knew that I was from Baltimore City, “You are here?

What happened, you made a wrong turn?

I said, “No, I just wanted to eat iftar with my Muslim brothers here in this community.”

An Imam at one masjid Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam me and smiled and had expressed how happy he was to see me breaking the fast at his masjid. While I was eating he again came up to me and thanked me for coming to his community and eating with them. One of the servers, at another masjid, had also thanked me for coming to his community and eat iftar with them. I was willing to go at least a combined 260 miles out of my way to be with my brothers/ sisters in Islam. Allah says: “O mankind!

We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another.

Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware” (49:13).

This journey had bought me closer to my Muslim family and hopefully broken down any walls or perceived notions about my “tribe”.

If a Muslim dislikes someone solely based on the color of their skin, this is not from Islam. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) said, "Allah does not see your outward appearances and your possessions, but He sees your hearts and your deeds." Perhaps, some may think that because of their lineage it automatically makes them superior over others. This unfounded superior position may foster a racist attitude towards others. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) said, "Allah will not inquire about your lineage on the Day of Resurrection. The most honorable in the sight of Allah is he who is most pious.” There is a great reward in loving each other purely for the sake of Allah. It is sufficient honor for those who love one another for the sake of Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala, men and women alike, to know that their almighty Lord will take care of them on the Day of Judgement and he will say: "Where are those who loved one another for My glory? Today I will shade them in My shade on the Day when there is no shade but Mine.”

Sometimes some Muslims may not exchange salaams to each other, because of the color of the other person’s skin, they are not from their country or not from the same region in their country. This type of behavior is opposite of what the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) encouraged Muslims to do.

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something that if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salam amongst yourselves.

We must keep in mind the beautiful words of the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam), “Believers are like a structure, parts of which support other parts”.

Furthermore, the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) encouraged the Muslims to be brothers to one another, "Do not envy one another, do not outbid one another (in order to inflate prices), do not hate one another,

The faith contingent, with Muslims in the lead, marched behind frontline environment communities, labor, immigrants, educators and others.

Sahir Jafri, Director of Operations and Finance, from Rockville, is collecting donations. On the board of Green Muslims, he is a part of the Our Deen Is Green (ODIG), a program aimed at teaching

There are 40 attendees at this popular event and most are new faces. “ It is great to see the usual suspects in the DC Muslim community, but today we saw new faces very engaged what we are doing and our [new] partnerships,” she shares. This gives her hope that new people are seeing the value of the work Green Muslims is doing. “Alhamdulillah, this is how we will grow. I am feeling very grateful,” she says.

Inspired, the Muslim Association of Virginia Youth also hosted zero-waste iftars this Ramadan. As world of mouth spread the idea was also picked up by Muslims in New Orleans.

This year the organization has a grant and GM is collaborating with Hungry Harvest, which buys recovered produce— fruits and vegetables that are perfectly fine to eat, but would have otherwise been thrown away— and sells it to subscription customers.

Produce is often discarded because of aesthetic imperfections (think misshapen eggplants) or logistical inefficiencies (when grocery stores over order). A fam-

ily or an office can order a box of fruits and/or vegetables to their home. “[W]e have received misshapen, oversized and undersized items, but the flavor is never affected. By Muslim Link Staff The Route 1 Iftar was held at the College Park Community Center on Friday, June 16, 2017, at the College Park Community Center with Honorary Host, College Park Councilman Fazlul Kabir. The event was organized but the Academy of Muslim Achievement.

Holding Up Our Youth Through Their Shock and Grief

By Patti Blades Muslim Link Contributing Writer Why do bad things happen to good people. Why would Allah allow the death of two innocent children?

How could this happen in our own community? These and countless other questions are being asked in a natural response to the tragic, violent deaths of 2 of our teenagers. As our community at large, and individuals in particular, grapples to make sense of these tragic deaths, there are several issues relating to traumatic stress and developing grief that parents and other adults will be tasked with. Our entire community must direct its' energy to supporting

our youth as we all attempt to integrate these senseless deaths and develop a new sense of normal after tragedy. It is our parental and spiritual duty to provide a safe holding environment for our children and teens as they absorb information about the deaths of our two DMV teens and work through their emotions.

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross outlined a series of fluid stages of grief, including but not limited to denial, bargaining, anger, and acceptance. Indeed, our youth and our collective community may experience these stages in a variety of ways.

It is our parental and spiritual duty to provide a safe holding environment for our children and teens as they absorb information about the deaths of our two DMV teens and work through their emotions.

There is no right or wrong way for our children and teens to experience and outlet their reactions to the loss and the information they hear, read or see. The focus needs to be on safe, supported and intentional experience and processing of whatever emotions and thoughts they may be experiencing. The experience of trauma is an individual process, though there can be several outward signs of difficulty: marked changes in usual behaviors, isolation or withdrawal from usual activities or people, sleep and eating habit changes, sudden or marked changes in mood, increased anxiety or emotional reactivity. If he sees any fault in him, he corrects it."

Also, the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) said, "None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself." That being said by the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) let’s start by praying for one another. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) said, “The quickest prayer to be answered is a man's supplication for his brother in his absence” It is a great unpleasant feeling to experience the racism that exists within the United States of America society and also to feel any racism amongst my Muslim family. When this happens, it means that some Muslims are getting a double dose of racism, from outside of the Muslim community and from inside the Muslim community, which leaves little room for escaping racism and racist behavior. To me, both are painful, but the one that is most painful is any racism that is practiced within the Muslim community – particularly amongst people who are the best of mankind. Allah says, “You are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma`ruf (all that Islam has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (all that Islam has forbidden), and you believe in Allah ...” (3:110) I encourage all Muslims to come out of their racial masjid’s comfort zones and visit, pray and socialize with Muslim members of other communities. Perhaps, once a month, for example, an Imam from one community can be the khatib in another community and vice versa. General members of communities can, once a month or more, go to a jumuah service at another masjid and maybe support some of the programs and fundraising efforts that the “other” masjid is having. Perhaps, next Ramadan and every Ramadan afterwards more Muslims will join me, particularly leadership, in visiting other masajid in breaking their fast and eating

with our Muslim family outside of our racial masjid comfort zone. We should take our families with us to the other masajid so that perhaps, in shaa Allah, our children will embrace the children of other Muslim ethnic groups instead of being fearful of them or looking down upon them. Supreme Court: High-Level Bush Officials Immune from Liability for Muslim Profiling, Abuse But Possibility to Prove Liability of Prison Administrators Remains June 19, 2017, Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed a federal appeals court ruling that former high-level Bush administration officials may be sued for their roles in the post-9/11 profiling and abuse of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian men. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, hundreds of non-citizen Muslim, Arab, and South Asian men were rounded up solely on the basis of their race, religion, ethnicity, and immigration status. They were held in extremely restrictive confinement and physically and psychologically abused.

The Court held that high-level government officials who implement and create clearly unconstitutional policies alleged to be based on national security are nonetheless shielded from liability.

“We are very disappointed with the Court’s dismissal of our clients’ claims,” said Center for Constitutional Rights Senior Staff Attorney Rachel Meeropol. “The Court’s decision allows for high-level officials to violate the Constitution without fear of personal accountability—a dangerous message in this time of rampant statesponsored discrimination against Muslim and immigrant communities. As Justice Breyer noted in dissent, ‘If you are cold, put on a sweater, perhaps an overcoat, perhaps also turn up the heat, but do not set fire to the house.’” Meeropol added, “I fear our house is ablaze.”

However, the Court allowed plaintiffs an opportunity to prove their case against Warden Hasty, finding that complaint’s allegations at this stage of the case, “plausibly show the warden’s deliberate indifference” to the abuse plaintiffs suffered while they were held at the MDC. The claims against the Warden will be sent back to the lower courts for an opportunity to show that prison administrators are not entitled to the same immunity given to highlevel officials in this case.

Benamar Benatta, who now resides in Canada, said, “Being labeled a terrorist and sitting there in your small cell without any distraction or reading material, not knowing what will happen to you or where you will end up is the worst thing that can ever happen to a human being.”

Despite the clearly discriminatory nature of such tips, and though the Bush officials knew there was no reason beyond the men’s race, religion, and ethnicity to suspect them of ties to terrorism, Mueller ordered that each be thoroughly investigated and Ashcroft ordered that everyone who fit the profile be held as a suspected terrorist until cleared by the FBI. Justice Breyer, joined by Justice Ginsburg (Justices Kagan and Sotomayor had recused themselves from the case and could not participate in the ruling), read a powerful dissent from the bench, the first time he has done so this year. He stressed the significance and seriousness of plaintiffs’ claims and the central role the courts must play to check executive abuses. Comparing

the majority’s decision to other regrettable episodes in U.S. history when the courts looked the other way, including Japanese internment, he wrote: “In wartime as well as in peacetime, it is important, in a civilized society, that the judicial branch of the Nation’s government stand ready to afford a remedy for the most flagrant and patently unjustified, unconstitutional abuses of official power.”

Many of the detained men were held in a specially created maximum security housing unit for months, held in solitary confinement and prohibited from contact with the outside world, beaten, deprived of sleep, and denied the ability to practice their religion. Upon arrival at MDC, many of the detainees had their faces smashed into a t-shirt pinned to a wall with a picture of the American flag and the words “These colors don’t run” and were told, “Welcome to America.” The blood-smeared shirt hung on the prison wall for months. Ultimately,

To this day we see high-level officials either retired or still holding office talk and praise the effectiveness of torture and mistreatment of detainees despite mounting evidence to the contrary! It is only by holding high-level officials to account when their policies are ineffective or discriminatory that a country can properly heal and look forward to the future. I am very disappointed.”

Grenfell Tower fire: Kensington Muslims host sunset meal on street for people affected 'That’s the Muslim attitude'

Many people who live in the area surrounding the tower are Muslim and volunteers from the charity Penny Appeal decided to cater for those who are observing Ramadan, although anyone was welcome to join in.

At sunset people broke their fast for the Iftar meal and were offered water, fizzy drinks, bread and fruit to sustain them as the aid effort continued around them.

The impromtu meal was praised by Twitter users, with one pointing out: “That’s the Muslim attitude”.

It was another example of volunteers

coming together to help those affected by the fire.

Hundreds of people have donated clothes and food, and fundraising initiatives have so far raised over £3m.

Zia Salik, head of fundraising at the charity Islamic Relief, told The Independent that his team and other volunteers worked day and night to help with the rescue effort.

“There was a huge outpouring from the community to say ‘we want to do something’,” he said.

It later emerged that Muslims awake for Ramadan might have helped save lives after they noticed the horrific blaze had started and alerted other residents.

A witness said: “Muslims played a big part in getting people out”.

A man has been hailed as a hero after catching a young girl whose mother threw her from the window of Grenfell Tower as it burned.

The four-year-old is safe and uninjured after a brave man called Pat, who lives in a low-rise block next to the tower, caught her “like a rugby ball tucked in his chest” from the fifth floor.

However, witnesses fear the worst for her mother, as the flat was engulfed in flames seconds after the small child was thrown out.

Resident Kadelia Woods, 20, told The Sun: “The mum had the little girl’s head wrapped in a towel and was holding her out of the

window and was screaming for help. The fire was raging like crazy. It was about 2am and the flat was filled with smoke.

“My neighbour Pat, who’s in his 40s, was calling up to her shouting, ‘Drop her, don’t worry I’ll catch her’. The mum was screaming, ‘No, no, I can’t, I can’t’.

“Pat kept reassuring her and then the girl just dropped. Everyone’s hearts stopped as she fell. We were all fearing the worst.

“But Pat managed to catch her like a rugby ball tucked in his chest and he just clung on to her.

“She had a pink dressing gown on and she was just screaming hysterically for her mum. The paramedics were trying to put

an oxygen mask on her but she was just screaming and screaming. I don’t think her mum survived. When I looked up again the whole floor was on fire.”

It is thought Pat got injured while helping

people from the tower and was treated in hospital.

Community leaders told the tabloid they thought the mother of the rescued child died in the fire.

Halal Tourism: Kuala Lumpur Welcomes the Muslim Travellers Others Didn't Want After 9/11 it was difficult for many Muslims to travel to Europe and the US, so Malaysia’s capital stepped in to welcome them – a move that’s paying off

By Vincent Bevins | The Guardian, June 6, 2017 A little patch of grass sits between international banks and flashy skyscrapers in downtown Kuala Lumpur. There’s a big statue of a water jug, and some gold and red ramadas (gazebos) meant to recall traditional Moroccan architecture. On the edge of the park are kebab stands and a small mall. The gate at the entrance reads Ain Arabia.

Like many purpose-built tourist attractions, this Arab-themed urban village in Malaysia’s capital is a bit hokey, and given the searing sun, few people mill around for long. But when it was built in 2005, the “Eye of Arabia” was a small gesture to Middle Eastern and Muslim travellers – that whatever other countries might think of Muslims, they were welcome in Kuala Lumpur.

Twelve years later, that message has paid off.

Though it’s only 60% Muslim, Malaysia now ranks first on a global list of Muslim-friendly tourist destinations. While other countries made life difficult for them, Malaysia has specifically courted Muslim travellers with small tweaks, such as making halal food and prayer rooms readily available and clearly marked. The government’s dedicated Islamic Tourism Centre says the country of 30 million now receives about 5 million Muslim tourists a year.

“After 9/11, it became difficult for many Muslims, especially from the Middle East, to travel to many traditional tourist destinations like Europe and the US,” says Fazal Bahardeen, founder of Crescent Rating, the travel company behind the ranking.

“Malaysia was one of the first countries to realise the potential of this market.”

It’s often simple things that create a Muslimfriendly environment, he says. “A common misconception is that ‘Muslim tourism’ means people going to do Muslim things.

But in reality, they go to do the same things – they may want a shopping experience, or a beach experience, or a local cultural experience. They want to have fun like anyone else, but they just want to know they don’t have to worry about their basic faith-based needs.”

The influx of Muslim tourists has transformed parts of Kuala Lumpur. Ain Arabia now feels almost humble compared to the much larger and more lucrative businesses catering to Muslim tourists. The main strip on Bukit Bintang street offers almost entirely Arab and Middle Eastern food; and there are designer fashion boutiques, luxury hotels and the Pavilion Mall, where families from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and many other countries spend hours shopping.

“I personally deal with the Arabic speakers, but there are also Iranians, and Muslim tourists from everywhere,” says Nagmaldeen Amer, a 25-year old Yemeni who fled war and found a job in the Ain Arabia mall selling travel packages to islands or theme parks outside Kuala Lumpur.

Next to Amer’s stall is a Bangladeshi barber, Prodip Chandra, who specialises in curly hair and beards. “Malaysians don’t really ever wear beards,” Amer laughs. “Here, that’s a special skill.”

Tourism is vital to most south-east Asian countries. In Malaysia more than 10% of

the population work in the sector. But while other regional capitals draw their fair share of hard-drinking party goers, Bukit Bintang street attracts couples smoking shisha and drinking tea.

The world’s largest Muslim population is next door in Indonesia, but Malaysia’s comparative wealth has made it more of a draw for well-heeled Arab tourists. While Muslims are a minority of total visitors to the country, they tend to spend more, says Zulkifly Md Said, director of the country’s Islamic Tourism Centre.

“Out of 57, we are the only member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation with a special Islamic tourism department,” he says. “We created it in 2009 when we shut down our Commonwealth tourism centre.”

He argues that Malaysia’s multiculturalism – the two largest non-Malay groups being the ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities – has accustomed them to being flexible with

varying religious interpretations. “It’s not so complicated. Our Muslim visitors want something that is comfortable, but at the same time something that is a little different.”

The government tries to help by providing advice to local businesses on specific Muslim concerns, such as clearly indicating exactly when daylight begins and ends during Ramadan. He jokes that during the period of fasting, Malaysia can be a nice break – as summer days are shorter than in many Arab countries.

This year Ramadan began on 26 May, and a few weeks later the peak season for Middle Eastern tourism starts, as high temperatures push families out of the Gulf states and down to the tropics. Chandra, the Bangladeshi barber, says he’s looking forward to the work.

“I don’t care. They can be from Muslim countries, they can be from here, they can be from anywhere.”

children and teens, keeping lines of communication open are all ways to support our youth.

Normalizing difficult emotions or changes in daily functioning can be very effective in helping to alleviate the anxiety children and teens may feel but not be able to articulate. These changes are often normal responses to the loss of equilibrium resulting from trauma.

People often become more anxious when experiencing changes, while these shifts are completely natural biological and emotional responses to any form of loss or trauma. And these deaths are traumatic. Add to this trauma, the additional impact of the invalidating environment.

It is known in the mental health field, that trauma is compounded when caretakers deny or dismiss the trauma. This is being done on a systemic level, evidenced by the current refusal of law enforcement and media to consider these murders potential hate crimes. This creates an invalidating environment, in that an emerging reality of increasing Islamophobia is basically denied despite our community's direct experience.

The good news is that there are many ways we can address the needs and emotional well-being for our youth, as well as for the entire community. First, we must be vigilant and intentional in our own handling of material and media relating to violence against our community members. For example, consider the age and emotional maturity of children when discussing events, or when using news and social media outlets. Controlling access to news and social media is essential in helping younger children prevent being over stimulated by material their developing brains cannot yet handle. Being mindful of our own discussions of current events is also crucial. If young children ask

CONTINUED questions, clarify with them what they have been told or what they've heard, to check for accuracy and to detect possible anxiety or fear.

If they ask questions, keep answers short, clear and give reassurances for their own safety.

For teens and tweens, actively helping youth become critical media consumers can be very helpful. Monitor what youth are getting exposed to on social media by discussing with them what they notice. Ask for their opinions and observations. Normalize stress responses and be open to the diversity of possible stress reactions. Keep communication open by inviting conversation and also by being involved in leisure activities or doing other things to promote a sense of predictably in an otherwise chaotic world.

For those individuals or families with potential trauma, be aware that it is common for existing existing or old traumas to be retriggered by new stressful events. This does not indicate sickness or brokenness. It just means there is some work and self care to be done. It is perfectly acceptable to seek help from friends, family, or professionals if needed. As Muslims, we are encouraged to pray, work on our selves, and to seek the "cure" or assistance when needed.

For those most closely connected to our dear brother and sister- frie n d s, cl a ss m a t es, fa m i ly Members, and the teens who were in close proximity to or who witnessed the abduction and assault: please know that there are a multitude of common responses.

Some may experience guilt, self doubt, sadness and depression.

Please remember and know that only one party is responsible for the trauma of these two deaths-the criminal perpetrators. Seek help and support for distress you may experience as you struggle to process and integrate these

traumas. Look out for evolving grief and any possible signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: a sense of reexperiencing the trauma event, flashbacks, nightmares, increased anxiety, hypervigilance, need to avoid reminders of the trauma, sense of being alone or isolated.

These are all natural but painful responses to trauma.

And ultimately, the community can grow stronger and knit more tightly by mutual support of our youth and each other. There is rich opportunity in the aftermath of trauma, for the individuals and the wider community to become stronger and to develop a sense of meaning and purpose. May Allah open our ability to support each other and our youth, ameen. To foster community support, recognize critical questioning as an attempt to make sense of tragedy. The intermosque politics and conflicts,

the media's negative portrayal of the victims of crime, and the refusal to see the murders as hate crimes can be symptoms of our society's difficulty grieving the loss and as bids to make sense of the inexplicable. Inshallah, may our community come together in unity rather than divide, as we struggle to come to terms with the violent crimes against our dear young sister and brother. We owe it to the families and friends to unite rather than divide.

ISLAM Ramadan is Over. No Reason to Get Bent Out of Shape.

By Dr. Main Al-Qudah Yesterday, Muslims were waiting for Ramadan, however, today they are saying goodbye to it, as if this month were moments long. And as this month passed quickly, life does, and so people die and move to the hereafter.

The end of Ramadan reminds us with the closeness of death. The end of Ramadan reminds us with the saying of the prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam, “Live in this world like a stranger or a bye-passer”. Ibn Omar used to say, “If you wake up, don’t wait for the evening, and if you reach the evening, don’t wait for the morning. Take advantage of your good health and your life”. The end of Ramadan reminds us with the saying of Nooh Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam, who lived more than thousand years. When death came to him, he was asked about life, he said, “My example with life is just like a person enters a house that has two doors, he enters from one, and gets out from the other”. The prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam also said, “My example in this life is just like a traveler who takes shelter under a tree and then leaves it and goes”.

While saying goodbye to Ramadan, each one of us should ask himself these questions: What have I gained from this month? Have I passed the test? Do I deserve to get the diploma of taqwa? Whoever finds goodness then let him praise Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala and whoever finds something else let him work hard to reform himself and seek the help from Allah.

What is there after Ramadan? Do the lessons of Ramadan end with it, or continue after it? To answer this question, we shall briefly go over these lessons:

Fasting: we’ve learned from fasting how to soften our souls and break their desires and performing the concept of Uboodiyah to Allah alone. The prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam encouraged us to continue fasting six days during the month of Shawwal when he said, “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and he follows it with six days of Shawwal as if he fast the whole year”. It was the tradition of the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam to fast Mondays, Thursdays, three days of each lunar moth, the day of Arafah, Ashourah and most of Sha’ban and Muharram.

Praying Taraweeh: Praying at night was the habit of the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam all his life, and he used to encourage his followers to do so. He (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) said, “Do qiyam-ul-lail, the night prayer; it used to be the good deeds of the pious people before you. It draws you closer to your Lord, it causes your sins to be forgiven, and it causes you to avoid doing bad deeds”.

Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala describes his pious servants that “they used to sleep a little at night” in Surat Al-Sajdah.

The recitation of the Quran: You must not stop reading the Quran after Ramadan, otherwise you’ll be among those whom the prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) described as Allah says, “And the messenger said, ‘O my Lord! Verily my people have deserted this Quran. And remember the advice of the Prophet(Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) when he said, “Read the Qur’an repeatedly, for the reason that it is easier to be released from the chests of men than the camel from its leash”. So open your heart to the orders and advices of Allah, and make sure that your wife and children learn how to read

correctly the book of Allah.

Charity: Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala says, “those who spend their wealth day and night, secretly and publicly, their reward is with their lord…’. The prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam was very generous, like wind loaded with rain. Remember that Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala will compensate you for what you spend, and that spending is a sign of having Eyman. Remember that the reward of spending for the sake of Allah in non-Muslim countries is anticipated to be doubled since the need for it is urgent for building and maintaining Masajid, schools and other institutes. Spending from your wealth will benefit you in your life and in the hereafter. The messenger of Allah Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said, “When the son of Adam dies, his deeds will be terminated except in case of one of these three: a continual charity, or a beneficial knowledge, or a pious son who prays for his father.

Abandoning the Evil: Abandoning the evil and committing sins is a must in Ramadan and outside Ramadan. It is the deed of the people of true faith. There is no goodness in a Muslim who doesn’t do evil in Ramadan but as soon as Ramadan ends, he goes back to his evil deeds.

Knowing that Eid is an excellent chance to wash the hearts from hatred and bad feeling, the prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam says, “It’s not allowed for a Muslim to avoid his brother over three nights. They both meet, but this turns away and that turns away, and the best of them is the one who initiates Salam”. So be better than your brother and initiate the Salam.

Abdullah Baig’s younger sisters were having a meal at the same IHOP with their sister visiting from overseas. They came back at 4:45 and shared that a young woman was kidnapped. That this happened “in the safest, wealthiest county in United States” was “very unbelievable” for Baig.

“Nabra was a bright, beautiful loving child, a vibrant youth of our community,” said Imam Mohamed Magid of ADAMS. “We are in shock and in pain and we are all missing her.”

“The youth are in shock and denial,” says Baig, who was the former youth coordinator at ADAMS and a graduate of their hifdh program. Observing

numbness and hopelessness in the youth staff at ADAMS, Baig says it has been mentally draining for the youth workers at ADAMS. “Even the youth counselors need counseling,” he adds.

Some of the boys who were walking in the group back to the masjid were as young as 13 and 14, says Baig.

A lot of youth that are mentally not safe in their own psyche and they feel exploited he says.

ADAMS leaders feel like their tragedy

is being exploited and responded to accusations of mishandling.

“We have cracker jack lawyers who are essential, active members of this community as well as mental health professionals, educators, spiritual guides, civil rights activists, violence against women experts, criminal justice advocates, youth mentors, interfaith partners, political leaders, artists and so many more who call ADAMS their home base and are fully engaged,” write Afeefa Syeed, Head of School of Fatih Academy and a long time member of ADAMS. Sayma echoed her thoughts,”As an ADAMS center community member--yes, the same one Nabra belonged to, I can promise you the narrative of witnesses of the tragic event match that of the official Fairfax County Police Department's press statement. Your unwanted and unwarranted outrage on behalf of our community is hurting the beautiful and unique interfaith relationship this community has built with our police departments, our local officials, and our fellow minority brothers and sisters,” she said.

Her death has prompted national conversations about the role of youth in the masjid. Some are against the culture of youth socializing during the sacred nights of worship; others say that the masjid is most vibrant during Ramadan and at least the teens are at the masjid. “It is the masjid’s duty to provide services for the youth; to

provide space for youth to feel safe, protected and cared for,” says Baig, stressing the and.

Baig says it is a big deal that the young people ran back to the masjid, they could have gone to back to the shopping center. “It is important that they thought of the masjid as a sanctuary.”.

Her three year old sister cries for Nabra. “Where is Nabra? When will she come back?”

“Pray for me that I can handle it,” says her mother. “I lost my daughter, my first reason for happiness.” Many Muslim mothers and young women have felt her pain and are organizing support circles.

“We need time and space to heal” says Imam Magid, who then thanked the police department for bringing the man into custody.

“I don't want anyone being [sic] in the same position,” says her father.
