Muslims Add Voice to Interfaith Call for Reforms Faith Leaders Want VA legislators to Act on Gun Safety, Education, and More

Muslim Link Staff Reporter No permanent allies, no permanent enemy, just permanent issues— was the call of the evening for members of several churches, masajid, and synagogues, nonpartisan and independent faith leaders, in a packed hall at the Oakton High School in Vienna, Va., on October 16, 2016. Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement (VOICE), an interfaith coalition of organizations set up to build power in lower and middle income communities, gathered 65 member organizations to set the agenda for 2017-2021.

The coalition held hundreds of listening sessions with over 3000 NoVA residents that formed the basis of the goals that VOICE set out for the regional campaign for gun safety, quality public education, affordable housing, criminal justice

reform and immigrant rights. The Attorney General of Virginia, Mark Herring, addressed gun violence prevention at the assembly of over 1100 multi-faith leaders with ‘relational power to be able to act on their faith’.

VOICE sent a clear message to politicians: keep commitments and get rewarded.

The Attorney General affirmed his support of all of VOICE’s demands on holding gun manufacturers accountable and changing Virginia's inequitable criminal justice system. Herring received a standing ovation from VOICE leaders for his commitment to changing Virginia’s justice system that targets, arrests, and incarcerates a disproportionate number of African-Americans, immigrants and youth. The governor’s empty seat spoke volumes about his empty promises.

Donate Life America Announces 2016 James S. Wolf, M.D., Courage Award Winner RICHMOND, November 1, 2016 – Last week, Donate Life America (DLA), a national non-profit organization committed to increasing the number of donated organs, eyes and tissue available to save and heal lives, presented Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, with the James S. Wolf, M.D., Courage Award at DLA’s annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The James S. Wolf, M.D., Courage Award is named in honor of the transplant surgeon pioneer who founded the Coalition on Donation (now Donate Life America).

The award is presented annually to an individual outside the professional donation and transplantation community, who has: played a significant national

role in helping to educate the public about organ, eye and tissue donation and promoting donor registration; expressed personal commitment and enthusiasm

in educating the public; sought to reach audiences on a national level; and demonstrated the 'service above self' attitude in their mission.

The Washington, D.C. metropolitan region has the highest concentration of newly entered Muslims in the U.S. When given with the option of donation, the overwhelming majority of family members who self-identified as Muslim, did not authorize donation on behalf of their deceased loved one. The singular reason that was given: “It’s against my religion.” Similarly, these case reviews also revealed that none of these deceased Muslim individuals was a registered organ, eye and tissue donor. Washington Regional Transplant

Community’s (WRTC) Community Affairs team needed to launch a highly strategic public education and community outreach initiative designed to educate those of the Islamic faith that organ donation is permitted in their religion.

WRTC needed a partner, an advocate and a leader in the Islamic community.

Imam Johari Abdul-Malik is the outreach director at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Northern Virginia, one of the largest Islamic Centers in North America.

Untangling the Salon-Scape for Hijabi Hair-dos Barbershops, Salons, Spas, and Even Homes Provide Private Space for Hijabi Hair Cuts

Muslim Link Staff Writer Getting a haircut can be a game of hide and seek for women who wear hijab — hiding from the male gaze at salons or seeking a hair salon that offers private rooms with full services.

Many women color their own hair and trim each other’s hair. Others search for stylists that will accommodate them by adjusting their hours. Some opt for stylists to come to their homes to cut and color their hair. The awkward pause when calling up salons and asking for a femaleonly time is familiar to most. There are options in the DMV area for Muslim women who wear headscarves and need privacy, crave relaxation, a comfortable chair, and a professional cut.

“I want a professional stylist, not a random aunty in their basement, that can cut curly hair really well,” laments a woman in a social media group.

A private room is an ideal option, letting women who wear the hijab (and others) feel comfortable getting their hair done as men are not allowed in the area. The

The salon advertises this on their YELP page and is also attempting to attract Muslim customers by proudly displaying a smiling hijab-covered patron in its advertising.

'Love Like the Prophet' Art and Poetry Exhibit Held in DC

By Muslim Link Staff On October 28, 2016, Karamah: Muslim Women for Human Rights, hosted “Love like the Prophet”, an art and poetry exhibition, at the American Islamic Heritage Museum in Washington, D.C. Karaamah has hosted this event for the past four years to highlight Prophet Muhammad's (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) example as a way to combat Domestic Violence in our faith community, with workshops, panel discussions and now an exhibition. “We believe that if we learn his example, we cannot help but be inspired by the love with

O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it. It was related by at-Tirmidhi (also by Ahmad ibn Hanbal). Its chain of authorities is sound.

Casey G. of Banana’s Hair Design in College Park, Md. says that her salon is willing to accommodate [any Muslim woman's] desire for privacy in order to have their hair done at the salon.

“It would need to be done during nonbusiness hours, but we have stylists that would be happy to accommodate. A small additional convenience fee, for having the stylist come in early or stay late will be charged,” she adds.

T. Khan, a modest wear designer, gets her hair cut at Alchemy in Silver Spring, Md., which is right next to the Trader Joe's. Male employees don’t work at the salon on Mondays.“[You] can call and check ahead if there are any male clients scheduled.” She says if clients ask for a seat in the last row, they can't be seen.

If a family is looking for a quick, affordable, and neighborly place that can cut hair for $25 then places like Greenbelt Barber and Stylist in Greenbelt, Md. make the cut. Owned by a Lebanese couple, the wife cuts hair in an inside room but call her before going say clients.

Heena Ali lives in Greenbelt, Md. and frequents the Paul Mitchell School in Rockville, Md., which is another affordable option. “They have a private room, my only issue has been it takes them forever to cut [hair] because they're still learning. There were some male clientele and stylists, but they never came into the private room. I've had better experiences, especially being from Houston where there's a plethora of women only salons,’ she shares.

“Great stylists are in such demand. It's a wonder more Muslim women don't become licensed. I've always told my girls to either learn to sew or learn to style hair, [w]herever you are in the world, your services will be needed,” suggests Coleman. Habibah Heard, better known as ‘Habibah the hairdresser’ is a licensed stylist. She got her license 36 years from Atlantic City, NJ. After she retired seven years ago and closed down her salon, Habibah’s Hair Studio, in Farmville, Va, she started offering her services from her home. She specializes in hair care.

She offers total privacy and suggestions to Muslimahs on haircase under hijab.

“Braids are a better for the health of your hair,” says Habibah. She recommends regular deep conditioning for women who are suffering from hair loss.“Muslimahs tend to wear traditional ponytails. They need to let their hair loose so hair can breathe and relieve tension around [the] hairline,” she adds. A trick she suggests is adding rollers under the hijab while out and taking them out when coming in and taking off the hijab. “We should do things with our hair for ourself and for the men in our lives,” she points out.

For those women who have excessively damaged hair, Hair Fantasy in Greenbelt specialize in hair care, whether you have all of your hair or are suffering from premature hair loss, chemical damage or other hair trauma. They offer completely private rooms in an upscale professional salon environment.

Suissa Salon in the Tyson Corner Center in Mclean, Va. also advertises a private room. With several master hair designers, they caters to all needs. Faizah Khan, a local resident, told the Muslim Link that the prices are reasonable and expected for the quality of the salon.

“Adan and Eva Salon in Springfield has a separate room for hijab friendly haircuts,” shares Lubna Zuberi, a teacher at Iqra Elementary School in Springfield, Va.. “It is a medium range salon, it’s comfortable but [you] do have to leave the privacy of the room to wash your hair. They wait for men to leave to take you to the shampoo station.” “I had a Brazilian blowout done and they did a fantastic job.”she adds.

“It’s right next to Halal Guys so you can get a bite to eat.” Springfield has some home based businesses as well. Licensed stylist Afshan works out of her home on Backlick Road, which works for many of teachers at the nearby Islamic school.

Dr Zabeen Patel says the other problem is even if Muslim women who cover find “someplace 'safe' to get [our] hair cut and styled all the costly effort gets ruined the minute we put our scarf back on. “'Hijab hair' is just as bad as 'helmet hair'!” she exclaims. Many do wonder why women who cover their hair spend money on getting it styled but that sentiment angers those who wonder why women who cover

are judged on a different standard than other women. Self care and beautification are powerful and personal, and just because a woman don't show it all in public, doesn't mean it's not a need.

Hedaya Kendall is a mom in Howard County. She goes to Salon Tusey, a hijab friendly hair salon in Clarksville, Md. The room is in the back. “My daughters and I went there and she's good. I only wish that [women in hijab] are not thrown in the back room as we usually are,” comments Diana Barahona-Ali, of Columbia, Md. Women who cover pay the same price as others for services and would like to be shown equal treatment— a nice room, fully equipped —among other things, she adds.

Home service is another option for the entire family. Hair Nirvana is a full hair service mobile salon that provides hair service for men, women and children.

They will come to your house in their RV. This is a Black-owned business and Robbie Williams, the owner of Hair Nirvana, a hairstylist for 26 years loves transitioning and making people look amazing.

Hijab wearing women getting haircuts upsets anti-Muslims. Many salons that publicly advertise being hijab-friendly get hate on social media and harassing phone calls.The Oasis Aveda Concept Spa, a salon in Sterling, Va. advertised their “hijab friendly” policy with a window sign welcoming customers who cover.

This sign was sent to the right wing radio host Laura Ingraham, who posted it on her Facebook page garnering a multitude of hateful comments.

Despite these negative sentiments, salons who value their clientele continue to provide these services. Michael Helene in Sterling, Va. also has a private room.

Four Seasons Salon Spa in Sterling, Va., is recommended on birdseye.com by user “Behar G” who says, “For any Muslim women who cover their hair, they have private rooms in the back and they’re going to be converting two rooms in about a week for women who keep their hair covered.”

Muslim women have also recommended Evolve in Georgetown, Washington D.C. and Master Touch in Bailey's Crossroads in Falls Church, Va. and Lux in Bethesda, Md. where each stylist has their own studio equipped with a hair washing sink.

Finding stylists that can handle a variety of textures is an additional challenge.

“I found out about Diamond Salon in Arlington, Va. from a Somali sister who had known them for years. The [unisex] salon is not owned or run by Muslims, but all the times I've been there, there was never any male there. You can request to have the door closed so whoever wants to come in has to knock. I take my girls there to have their hair made for Eid, and occasionally when I'm feeling lazy,” says a woman who was looking for a place who can handle her hair texture. “As for their price range, I normally don't patronize salons, so I don't know how expensive or cheap they are compared to other places.

Reviews online show their price range is quite affordable for the masses though.

The hair stylists are very courteous and professional. They are good at their job.

I wouldn't recommending braiding with them though, it is either too loose or too tight.

Malak Osman is a sixth grader at Camelot Elementary School where she is called a terrorist on a regular basis. A new program to support the influx of Syrian refugees to the Maryland area was established this year. The Resettlement Support Services is very actively assisting Syrian refugees,” noted Imam Amin.

RSS provides Syrian and other refugees with a caseworker, who connects them to resources and services that will assist them in transitioning into American life. This program assists the client families with eviction prevention, first month’s rent or security deposit, furniture purchase, clothing purchase, household items purchase, bus fare and much more.

Imam Amin shares that many Syrian refugees come to America with little to no ability to speak the English language.

So, many of them are enrolled in ESL (English as a Second Language) classes by their resettlement agencies. “The goal of them learning the English language is an excellent one, but in many cases it comes with many negative challenges.

For example, some of the Muslim female Syrian refugees have complained that they are asked by their ESL instructors to remove “those trash bags”, referring to

their head coverings, off of their heads,” he shares. They are told that they should not wear their traditional clothing because it makes them look like terrorists. “Also, the males and females Muslim ESL Syrian refugees are given Bibles in English and in Arabic! So, at the local masjid we have started ESL classes for Syrian refugees living in our area and we need your financial support in order to keep the classes going, growing and available,” he shared.

“We would love for these types of classes to be a shining example of other masajid to do the same and take the refugees out of an Islamically unfriendly environment into a masjid ESL Islamically friendly environment, inshaAllah. These ESL classes are so essential to these refugees' survive in America and much financial support is needed in order for the classes to continue,” he added. The masjid ESL classes are offered from 5-7:30 pm on Mondays for men and Wednesdays for women at Masjid Ihsan.

pushing back against gross inequality. I saw it all through my phone however, and I know millions of people in America saw it too. As an African American Muslim, it troubles me to know that the first people nearly annihilated in the American experiment were experiencing such injustice. My religion puts an indelible weight on interfering with abuses of human rights. Myself and others looked for ways to join the fight. In my naivety, I realized that there was huge swath of Native American Muslims, already wellinvested in the fight.

Energy Transfer Partners is a multibillion dollar natural gas conglomerate hailing from Texas. Their investments and operations range from transportation, storage, and pipeline construction for natural gas. Since 2015 they've set their sights on land declared holy by the tribes living in Standing Rock. Four months ago, their brigades of earth-clearing machines descended on the project area.

Approximately 150 million indigenous people were eradicated to make space for the American entrepreneurial project.

More than 10 million Africans were enslaved to labor for it. In 2016, the plans to once again extract the earth beneath the feet of the descendants of the aforementioned. Natives are being marched upon, violently.

The youth of Standing Rock refused to be silent though. One group of protesters ran 500 miles just to bring attention to the crisis. After obtaining the attention of a national audience, hundreds flocked to the protest site. Media, activists, organizations and concerned Muslims.

They were said to have been met by the tribespeople with warmth only cultivated through a rich tradition in compassion, a compassion that Columbus looked down upon when he landed saying “they could be conquered easily, and made servants.”

Latanya Barlow is a 34-year-old Arizona native and national representative of The Coalition for Indigenous Muslims. Her family is from the Dineh and Chiricahua people. Walking onto the reserve was a scene imbued with nostalgia. Barlow's tribe is a descendant of the 19th century Native American freedom fighter Geronimo. To be a Native right now in the Dakota region is to be perpetually at war. The treaty of 1868 named Fort Laramie promised to “ensure the civilization” of the Lakota, a large tribe with ancestral ties to the region. Basheer Butcher is a member of the Lakota and one of many residents that have witnessed the Energy Partner titan move in on ancient land. To him, the current trespasses across land and contract are only a reminder of age-old abuse. “From the Buffalo being killed off

In four months it's become clear to Butcher how brutal this new iteration of commerce-centered violence can become and how challenging it is to control public perception.

Butcher is well aware of what context means to be an indigenous Muslim involved in the Standing Rock struggle; he wants Muslim communities to understand

the severity of what is happening. “I see it as community situation more that a Muslim one. That's why we are backing this protest one-hundred-andfifty-percent. Before getting to a critical mass like this, area tribes negotiated with the birthing American government for land rights, concessions, and most important the procurement of contracting jobs when development was taking place. Companies like Energy Partners are required to enlist Natives for jobs first and foremost. TERO (Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance) is charged with managing the contracts with private enterprises. Though the project promises thousands of jobs, in this particular situation, TERO wants no parts of what Energy Partners wants to do. No jobs Butcher says, “are worth destroying a water source for millions.”

Besides African Americans, no other group of people could be more well acquainted with U.S. sanctioned piracy than the indigenous of America. Standing Rock as it is today appears to be the last straw for this generation of Natives. “The last time the tribes gathered together in this number was 140 years ago for the Battle of Little Bighorn” Butcher says.

Within weeks the opposition has turned to a brutal fiasco. Arrests continue, along with protesters enduring savage beatings by private police and journalists being targeted for arrest and trial. Support from outside of the reservation is crucial and imperative.

“Let us not forget, however, our native brothers and sisters who are facing the full force of corporate greed and government callousness at the Standing Rock Sioux reservation,” exclaimed Imam Zaid Shakir after a recent visit to the site. General Armstrong Custer's famous quote when stumbling upon and decimating the lush Sioux lands in the 1800s still presses needles in the

hearts today: “There's gold in them there hills.” Today Energy Partners, with the indifference of the American government, are prying land away from the hands of Natives once again, this time for black gold.

Muslim Pilot Grounded Without Explanation, Lawsuit Claims DALLAS – Oct 26, 2016 – After seven years of exemplary service, pilot Ameer Siddiqui was suspended and later fired because an unidentified employee allegedly viewed him as a “security concern,” according to an employment discrimination lawsuit filed against Netjets, Inc., and amended this morning in the Southern District Court of Florida (Case No. 1:16-cv-23924).

According to the lawsuit, Siddiqui, 54, started working as a pilot for NetJets, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, in 2006, flying passengers through West Palm Beach and Miami airports.

On September 7, 2013, an official at NetJets called Siddiqui to the company’s headquarters in Ohio without explanation.

By the time he arrived the next day, his identification card was deactivated and security refused to allow him on the property.

On September 8, 2013, Siddiqui’s supervisors informed him that the company has “security concerns” about him and that he was no longer allowed on company property. He was asked to return his security card, key and mobile device.

Siddiqui called NetJets’ Chief Pilot to get an explanation, but only learned that the

There’s a knock on your door from an employee alleging discrimination.

The employee doesn’t want to cause a problem, and asks you not to say anything. But, the employee is definitely uncomfortable, and mentions that a supervisor (who just gave that employee a poor review) made comments when no one else was around, that made this employee uncomfortable. After talking awhile, the employee asks you again to please not say anything, thanks you for listening, and says that maybe it will work out.

Later that month, Siddiqui filed a Charge of Discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

NetJets filed a response to the EEOC, claiming that Siddiqui was placed on administrative leave because of “AntiSemitic, Anti-American” statements that unnamed employees allege Siddiqui made years before.

According to attorneys representing Siddiqui, NetJets never alleged during the EEOC investigation or at any other time that the pilot ever “threatened to engage in any terrorist activity against anyone.” >> PILOT Pg 23

Problem solved?

Probably not. Often, exactly this situation leads to a courtroom and justifications later on, despite good intentions at the time. Employers from Abercrombie & Fitch, to Disney, to federal agencies, find themselves defending what they thought at the time were insignificant allegations. If that knock on the door happens, employers need to be prepared to address the situation, in a consistent way, so they don’t become the subject of discrimination claims. ‘It Will Be A Bloodbath’: Inside The Kansas Militia Plot To Ignite A Religious War

Inside the vehicle he kept a pistol, an assault rifle and ammunition, a bullet-resistant vest and a night vision scope.

The “Crusaders” knew they wanted to kill Muslims — and with luck, use the “bloodbath” to ignite a religious war — but for months they couldn’t settle on a plan.

The surveillance wasn’t covert.

The easiest way would be to grab guns, go to the predominantly Somali-Muslim apartment complex they’d been surveilling and start kicking in doors, court documents said. They would spare no one, not even babies.

In the end, they decided to set off bombs similar to the one Timothy McVeigh used in 1995 to kill 168 people in Oklahoma City. They planned to strike after the Nov. 8 election, investigators said.

Curtis Allen, Gavin Wright and Patrick Eugene Stein face federal charges of conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction to blow up an apartment complex, a mosque and Muslim immigrants from Somalia, the Department of Justice announced Friday.

Federal court documents reveal how the trio’s hatred and Islamophobia coalesced into a plan for domestic terrorism.

It was ultimately undone by an FBI confidential informant and Allen’s girlfriend, who showed authorities Allen’s supply room after he allegedly hit her during a fight.

Earlier this year, investigators were tipped off by the informant, who had attended meetings of a group calling itself the Crusaders. Allen, Wright and Stein were the leaders and the chief architects of the plan, investigators say.

The informant said the group’s focus was an apartment complex in Garden City, Kan., that had an apartmentturned-mosque attended by Muslims from Somalia. The Crusaders referred to them as cockroaches.

“They chose the target location based on their hatred of these groups, their perception that these groups represent a threat to American society, a desire to inspire other militia groups, and a desire to ‘wake people up,’” according to a criminal complaint unsealed this week.

As they hatched a plan, Stein took the lead on surveillance.

Sometimes he rode alone, sometimes he would have the confidential informant drive him. He would survey potential targets at the apartment complex, the mosque or a nearby mall.

“Stein, at various times, yelled at Somali women dressed in traditional garb, calling them “f—– raghead b——,” the complaint says.

On trips, he also admiringly discussed the Oklahoma City bombing and the fuel oil and ammonium nitrate device McVeigh exploded in front of it.

All the while, the three men mulled their plans, using hightech and simple methods to avoid detection. They used an app called Zello to encrypt their phone calls. Sometimes, they met in an open field.

Their conversations blurred between active planning and hate speech.

“Unless a lot more people in this country wake up and smell the f—— coffee and decide they want this country back . . . we might be too late, if they do wake up . . . I think we can get it done. But it ain’t going to be nothing nice about it.”

In September, the feds strengthened their case. Stein met with a man who said he could get the group guns. But the gunrunner was really an FBI employee, and the guns Stein fired in a rural part of Finney County, Kan., were from the FBI lab in Quantico, Va.

At a meeting a month later, Allen suggested the group make hundreds of signs saying “‘I support illegal immigration, I go against the constitution on a daily basis, I do not have any care for my fellow citizens in the state or in the town that I represent.’ . . . and then for everyone of them that we blow the top of their head off we just put that around their neck.”

The Crusaders had other problems. Allen was arrested Tuesday for domestic battery. His girlfriend said Allen beat her during an argument over money. She told the officers who responded that Allen had access to a gun.

Their plans began to solidify over the summer as they narrowed down their targets. In August, they settled on the apartment complex in Garden City, a Somali-Muslim enclave, the complaint says. They planned to use cars to set off explosions at the exits to the complex. The explosions would boom around prayer time, when most people would be gathering.

At some point, Allen began watching YouTube videos to learn how to make explosives.

He also got to work on a manifesto. But federal investigators, monitoring recordings of their meetings, already knew the group’s guiding philosophies: “The only f—— way this country’s ever going to get turned around is it will be a bloodbath and it will be a nasty, messy

One of the last conversations investigators recorded of the Crusaders was when Stein told an undercover agent that Allen’s girlfriend “needs to disappear.”

But it was already too late for the group. She showed officers the room where Allen had been making ammunition and said she believed he had been mixing explosives, too.

Police say it was hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, which is used to create homemade blasting caps.

Investigators closed in on Allen on Tuesday, trailing a GMC Yukon that Allen had been driving and stopping it near Highway 83. Inside the SUV, they found AR-15 and AK-47 magazines, and bullets for a handgun — a weapons cache they believe was linked to the planned attacks.

The men were arrested last week and face life in prison if convicted.

His partnership has been exclusively on a volunteer basis without any form of compensation—and it has had an incredible effect: In 2015, through his contacts at the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA), he secured a 60-minute panel presentation on organ donation at the Islamic Society of North America’s (ISNA) Annual Convention.

This Convention attracts almost 50,000 people and is the largest gathering of Muslims in the country.

In 2016 he facilitated a critically important meeting between WRTC and the International Institute Islamic of Thought (IIIT), the preeminent Muslim think tank in the country. It was at this meeting that IIIT agreed that the topic of organ donation, and the myths and misconceptions around it within the Muslim community, needed to be discussed among Islamic experts.

On July 20th, 2016, Imam Johari, WRTC and IIIT hosted a national Fiqh Forum titled, Reaching Consensus on Organ Donation: A Call to the American Muslim Community where national leaders in Islamic religion and law joined national leaders in the donation community of practice including AOPO, AMAT, DLA, HRSA, MOTTEP, UNOS and WRTC. Executive Members of the Fiqh Council of North America also attended the Forum and agreed to examine and review this matter to decide if they will issue a fatwa to American Muslims that communicates permissibility of organ donation.

Two moths later, The Fiqh Council of North America met during this year’s ISNA Convention and reached a consensus that the Council will be issuing a fatwa to American Muslims in support of, and permissibility for, organ eye and tissue donation. Further announcements and promotion of this development are forthcoming.

National News The Refuge for Battered Muslim Women In Texas Open for Over a Decade, Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation Has Helped Over 1,500 Victims of Domestic Violence

Muslim Link Staff Reporter In a city where 3 Muslim women have been killed by their husbands this year, the Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation (TWMF) — based on a sanctuary model — serves as an oasis for victims of violence. The organization engages Muslim communities in addressing violence in the home.

There is a myth that domestic violence doesn’t affect many people. Fact is that a woman is beaten every nine seconds. The American Medical Association (AMA) and FBI estimate 3-4 million women are battered each year in the U.S. You read that right, million. Domestic violence is the single greatest cause of injury to women. The FBI estimates violence occurs during the course of two-thirds of all marriages.

Two deaths of young mothers shocked the Dallas Muslim community. Hanan Seid, a Muslim woman from Dallas,

was recently killed by her husband, Ahmed Mehamded Abdel. Police reports say he shot her multiple times in the middle of the day in the parking lot of her Richardson apartment complex. She moved there trying to escape him. The time after a woman leaves her husband is the most dangerous time, according to experts. Women are 70 times more likely to be killed in the two weeks after leaving, than at any other time during the relationship. Noshin Chambers, another Muslim woman in Dallas, was killed in March by her husband. Ironically, Chambers’s sister sat on the board of TWMF. The DFW Metroplex witnessed the murder of 16 women in 2015 - their families and children devastated by the loss and living with this trauma for the rest of their lives. Since it launched in 2005, the organization has helped more than 1500 women and men.

Dr Hind Jarrah, one of the founders of the organization, the former president of board, and the current Executive Director for the agency, shares how

Muslim women in the Dallas metroplex gathered together and held a listening session after September 11. Thirty women — strangers to each other — came to the initial meeting. They spoke about issues important to them and formed the TMWF. A major problem identified, amongst issues like generational divide, ethnic and racial divides, and misrepresentation, was a lack of culturally appropriate domestic violence services. “We started in 2004, and launched in 2005,” she says, largely in response to the scrutiny after 9/11.

her husband owed large sums of money in child support debt from previous marriages, unknown to her. She spent her savings to help him pay his debts as well as their daily bills and expenses. He became more controlling and physically abusive. Finally, when Faith ran out of money, he abandoned her, taking the few remaining possessions they owned. “He left me there with no furniture, no money, nothing. I could not pay rent and the bills...” Alone in the United States, Faith ended up under the trauma- informed care of TWMF.

TWMF offers a full continuum of services — from ESL classes to financial management— to serve and support victims of family violence and their families from all backgrounds, with a special ability to understand and address the needs of the Muslim population. There is a 24-Hour Family Violence Hotline (972-880-4192). With a diverse staff of 20, speaking more than 14 languages, the Peaceful Oasis Shelter can accommodate 16 (adults only) and up to 20 (adults and children). Each client is assigned a case manager, meets with a counselor, and a lawyer speaks with them, to assess their needs. “We do not make decisions for the clients, we give them options,” says Jarrah.

TMWF helped her obtain her Green Card and her United States Work Authorization.

“I was upset because I haven’t been able to work. [I] came in for counseling and I [f]ound out about this,” she says, showing her work authorization card. “I guess God had something better for me this week!” she says joyfully, in spite of her years of dealing with the hardships from her abuse. “They really support you here.

They celebrate with me when good things happen and help me when I need it. To have somewhere to go, especially when you are from another country with no money and family, give [sic] you courage and strength to go on,” says Faith.

Silence is Wisdom Narrated Anas (Radhi Allahu 'Anhum): Allah's Messenger (Salla Allahu 'Alayhee wa Sallam) said, "Wisdom consists in keeping silent, and those who practice it are few." [Al-Baihaqi reported it in AshShu'ab with a weak chain of narrators, and the sound view is that it is traced back to one of the Sahabah who quoted it from Luqman Al-Hakim.]

To begin:

We see from this Ayah of the Quran that we should not dispute or speak without knowledge. This should be enough proof to those who want to comment on every issue discussed even though they do not know the correct rulings or responses to them. These people want to do ijtihad on these issues yet they have no right to do so, since they do not even have the bases in Islamic knowledge. When a person

From this we learn many things, and from other ahadith the concept becomes even clearer. Just taking from this hadith we see that it is best to be silent, yet there are very few who practice this. Today we see people who openly speak on issues in which they have no knowledge about.

Also we see people who continuously talk without any point in their rambling.

We will see, inshallah, how this is wrong, through proofs from Quran and Sunnah,

"Behold! You are they who disputed about that of which you had knowledge; why then do you dispute about that of which you have no knowledge? And Allah knows while you do not know." [‘Ali Imran: 66]

If a person starts telling you, whether in private or public, something that you already knew very well, you should pretend as if you do not know it. Do not rush to reveal your knowledge or to interfere with the speech.

Instead, show your attention and concentration. The honorable tab'i Imam Ata ibn Abi Rabah said: "A young man would tell me something that I may have heard before he was born. Nevertheless, I would listen to him as if I had never heard it before."

Khalid ibn Safwan al-Tamimi, who frequented the courts of two Khalifahs: Umar ibn Abdul Aziz and Hisham ibn Abdul Malik, said: "If a person tells you

something you have heard before, or news that you already learned, do not interrupt him to exhibit your knowledge to those present. This is rude and ill mannered."

The honorable Imam Abdullah ibn Wahab al-Qurashi al-Masri, a companion of Imam Malik, Al-Laith ibn Sad and AlThawri, said: "Sometimes a person would tell me a story that I have heard before his parents had wed. Yet, I listened as if I have never heard it before." Ibrahim ibn al-Junaid said: "A wise man said to his son: 'Learn the art of listening as you learn the art of speaking.'" Listening well means maintaining eye contact, allowing the speaker to finish the spech, and restraining your urge to interrupt his speech.

How to Benefit from The Qur'an

If you truly want to benefit from the Qur'an, your heart must be attentive and alert when reciting it or listening to it.

Listen to it carefully with presence of mind, paying attention to it as if Allah Himself was speaking to you directly.

Understand that this Qur'an is an address directed to you from Allah, Most High, upon the tongue of His Messenger (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam).

"or who listens attentively," i.e. directs his faculty of hearing towards it and pays it the utmost attention. This is the condition that must exist for a person to be roused by the words.

Allah, Most High, says, "Truly there is a reminder in this for anyone who has a heart, or who listens attentively with presence of mind." [1] A deep and lasting impression is dependent upon something that will stimulate a person, a location that can be influenced, his being in the right condition, and removing any barrier that would impede

"Truly there is a reminder in this" refers to the previous verses of this chapter. This, the Qur'an, is the stimulus. "for anyone who has a heart" refers to

Does Islam Permit Organ Donations?

Praise be to Allaah. In the answer to question no. 49711 we stated that the (scholarly) view that it is permissible to donate organs is most likely to be the correct view, so long as the donation will not lead to the death of the donor.

Here we will quote resolutions of the Islamic Fiqh Council of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, which support the fatwa mentioned above.

These resolutions were issued after lengthy discussions among a number of fuqaha’, doctors and specialists. We will quote them here in full because of the medical and shar’i information they contain.

In statement no. 26 concerning one person benefiting from the body parts of another, living or dead, it says: The Islamic Fiqh Council which convened in the fourth conference in Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 18-23 Safar 1408 AH/6-11 February 1988 CE, after studying fiqhi and medical research submitted to the Council concerning the issue of one person benefiting from the body parts of another, living or dead, has determined the following: In the light of the discussions that highlighted the fact that this issue is something that come about as the result of by scientific and medical advances, with clear positive results that in many cases are accompanied by psychological and social harm if it is practiced without shar’i guidelines and controls that protect human dignity and also seek to achieve the aims of sharee’ah which tries to achieve all that is good and in the best interests of individuals and societies and promotes cooperation, compassion and selflessness, And after highlighting the main points of this topic whereby it may be discussed and categorized, the following was determined: With regard to definition: Firstly: What is meant here by ‘organ’ is any part of a person, be it tissues, cells, blood and so on, such as the cornea, whether it is still attached or has been separated.

Secondly: The use or benefit that is

under discussion is a benefit that is dictated by necessity in order to keep the beneficiary alive or to keep some essential or basic function of his body working, such as his sight and so on, provided that the beneficiary is one whose life is protected by sharee’ah.

Thirdly: These kinds of benefit or use are divided into three categories: (I) Transplant of organ from a living person (ii) Transplant of organ from a dead person (iii) Transplant from a foetus. (i) The first category, which is transplant of an organ from a living person, includes the following:

(ii) Transplant of an organ from a dead person It may be noted that death falls into two categories: 1Brain death in which all bodily functions cease completely and cannot be brought back medically.

2- Where the heart and breathing cease completely and cannot be brought back medically.

Both of these categories were discussed in the resolution passed by the Council in its third session. (iii) Transplant from a foetus. Use or benefits in this case fall into three

It should be noted that the agreement on the permissibility of organ transplants explained above is subject to the condition that this is not done by selling the organs, because it is not permissible to subject human organs to sale under any circumstances.

Transplant of an organ from one place in the body to another place in the same body, such as transplanting skin, cartilage, bone, veins, blood and so on.

Transplant of an organ from the body of a living person to the body of another person.

Organs in this case may be divided into those on which life depends and those on which life does not depend. With regard to those on which life depends, they may singular organs, of which there is only one in the body, or there may be more than one. The former includes organs such as the heart and liver, and the latter includes organs such as the kidneys and lungs.

As for those on which life does not depend, there are some that control basic functions in the body and some that do not. There are some that are renewed automatically, such as blood, and some that are not; there are some that have an effect on offspring and on the genetic makeup and personality of the individual, such as testicles, ovaries and cells of the nervous system, and some that do not have any such effect.

With regard to shar’i rulings:

-3- It is permissible to make use of organs that have been taken from the body of another person due to sickness, such as taking the cornea from the eye of a person whose eye has been removed due to sickness.

-4- It is haraam to transplant an organ on which life depends, such as transplanting the heart from a living person to another person.

-5- It is haraam to transplant an organ from a living person when its removal may cause an essential function to cease, even though his life does not depend on it, such as taking the corneas of both eyes. But if he will still have partial function after removing it, then the matter is subject to further discussion as we shall see below in section 8.

-6- It is permissible to transplant an organ from a dead person to a living person whose life or basic essential functions depend on that organ, subject to the condition that permission be given by the deceased before his death, or by his heirs after his death, or by the authorities in charge of the Muslims if the identity of the deceased is unknown or he has no heirs.

-7- It should be noted that the agreement on the permissibility of organ transplants explained above is subject to the condition that this is not done by selling the organs, because it is not permissible to subject human organs to sale under any circumstances.

-1- It is permissible to transplant an organ from one place in a person’s body to another place in the same body, but attention must be paid to ensuring that the expected benefits outweigh any possible harm; that is subject to the condition that this is done to replace a lost organ or body part, or to restore its regular shape or function, or to correct a fault or remove a deformity that is causing the person psychological or physical harm.

As for the beneficiary spending money in order to obtain the required organ where necessary or offering compensation or honouring the donor, this is subject to ijtihaad and further discussion.

-2- It is permissible to transplant an organ from the body of one person to another if it is an organ that renews itself automatically, such as blood and skin. But attention must be paid to the condition that the donor be fully

The organization focuses on economic empowerment of the clients —three recent clients were enrolled in a two year medical program.TMWF also helps clients out with family law and immigration cases. Mahira* lost her seven children after they were removed

by Child Protective Services (CPS). She was fearful because they were separated from each other. One was molested in foster care. TMWF helped by having the children placed in the home of their grandparents.

Imams are often first responders in many cases. TMWF prides itself on the relationship it has with local clergy.

13 local imams have signed a zero tolerance for domestic abuse pledge.

Imam Yasin Sheikh, now at the Islamic Society of Baltimore, was instrumental in his role as an advocate as an imam in Dallas when TWMF was in its infancy.

“DV is a problem, we are not causing the problem, [but] are providing the solution. We enlisted the help of imams with a khutbah drive and trained them in healthy relationships,” says Dr Jarrah. “If the victims wants to talk to an imam, we refer them. We don't answer theological questions, we don't give edicts and don't provide spiritual counseling. We connect them with the community,” discloses Dr Jarrah.

Outreach is extremely important to the foundation. Dr Jarrah says that they never refuse an invitation to speak at churches, colleges, high schools, companies which helped them establish a reputation.

The foundation received several grants, initially from Dallas Women’s Foundation and recently from the Robert Johnson Foundation of $200,000 over 3 years.

“They gave us $60,000 [the first year and we had to match it in cash and inkind donations from within the community,” said Dr. Jarrah. “You have to have support from the community that you are claiming to serve.” With the grant, the foundation was able to hire full time staff. The shelter was purchased in 2011, and opened in 2012. Several transitionary housing units are also owned by the foundation.

It is something, where it takes time to realize because you love the person who is abusing you. It breaks you. TMWF builds you up and makes you whole again when you are broken from abuse,” shares Faith.

TWMF also gives referrals to Battering Intervention and Prevention Programs (BIPP), for Muslim men. According to the Domestic Violence Intervention

Dr Jarrah says some of the best practices of the organization are that the board and staff are constantly learning through conferences and workshops. “We are thorough; we research and study the practices put in place by other providers,” she says. The organization works with DV providers and participates in a local coalition. Much of the professional staff is from the community it serves. “We are an organization that emerges from the community,” she says.

Muslim organizations need to understand non-profit management. “Our boards need to understand the rules and receive training and orientation,” advises Dr. Jarrah, “We have to learn how to work collectively as a team- we have lots of one man shows. We cannot succeed and get trust and confidence that is needed

unless we do it.” She says it is easy to form an organization but to be sustainable and retain the confidence of the Muslim community and regulating community, the watchdogs, organizations have to be transparent and accountable.“We are sensitive and aware. We abide by the laws and the requirement in the countries that we are in,” says Dr Jarrah.

Another key to success in Jarrah’s eyes is that the organization proceeded very slowly and gradually established understanding and won the support of the Muslim community. When challenged as a ‘feminist organization’, TWMF made it clear to community that it was an asset for the community, and not out to undermine the culture and requirements of Islam. TWMF is working with local Muslim families in training them in how to become foster parents.

The organization maintains a ‘good’ working relationship with law enforcement, Child Protective Services, Legal Aid, and the District Attorney’s office. “They refer clients to us,” says Dr Jarrah. Regular review of local laws, laws particular to non profits and abiding with requirements is also a big part of TWMF success, in addition to a solid work ethic, and detailed program documentation.

Jarrah stresses that “the Muslim community must understand that professional staff is a must and the community must support the general operations of an organization.” “Stop expecting that money goes immediately to the client,” she gently scolds the Muslim community. “Staff must have their basic needs met, such as health insurance. We are very proud of how hard [our staff of 25] works. This work requires a huge degree of [emotional] support as many women don't speak English, are undocumented or don't have papers or huge amount of [family] support,” stresses Dr Jarrah. “[We] pay staff well so they can focus on helping the clients.

Our staff goes out of their way for them,” shares Dr Jarrah. “Unless organizations invest in human capital and have trained development officers, accountants, etc.— sole reliance on volunteers burns you up— they [will] burn out,” she adds.

will fit everyone as you are dealing with individuals. You have to understand that, to provide them with the best services.”

“We have male clients who are victims, we provide them with everything except offering them use of the [female only] shelter,” shares Dr Jarrah. TMWF helps male victims of domestic abuse by arranging and paying for a stay at a hotel and offers them complete case management.

The EEOC issued Siddiqui a Notice of Right to Sue in May 2016. After his lawsuit was filed in August 2016, Siddiqui received notice that NetJets terminated his employment. The termination notice was dated exactly 90 days after the EEOC closed its investigation, which was his deadline to file the initial lawsuit. NetJets had made a point of arguing to the EEOC that because Siddiqui remained employed and had not been terminated, he had no grounds to complain to the EEOC. Attorneys at Constitutional Law Center for Muslims in America, a nonprofit law center representing Siddiqui, said that the amended lawsuit filed yesterday adds retaliation and the termination to the charges because NetJets fired Siddiqui so soon after the EEOC investigation was dismissed.

“NetJets’ unlawful and malicious actions toward Mr. Siddiqui have caused him tremendous hardships,” said Christina Jump, Senior Staff Attorney at CLCMA. “He’s lost flight experience, income, his qualifications expired, and he has suffered emotionally as a result of how unfairly NetJets treated him.”

Jump also said that Siddiqui was never given a chance by NetJets to defend himself against any specific allegations the company used as its reason for suspending him.

“The company just accepted the accusing employees’ words at face value without conducting a full investigation,” Jump said. “To this day, Mr. Siddiqui still does not know any specific words or

In the lawsuit, attorneys charge that NetJets subjected Siddiqui to religious, racial, ethnic and age harassment and discrimination, as well as retaliation.

Attorneys are seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as attorneys’ fees. Siddiqui is also asking for his job back and for NetJets to stop discriminating against him and other employees in the future.

Representatives from Muslim Legal Fund of America, a national charity that funds the defense of constitutional rights for Muslims in America, said that Siddiqui’s case is a shocking, but common view into what many Muslims face across the nation.

“With the rise in anti-Muslim rhetoric, we’re seeing an increase in discrimination against Muslims in the workplace,” said Khalil Meek, executive director of MLFA. “I have no doubt that Ameer’s faith was a significant factor in how unfairly people at NetJets treated him.”

California, for example, has several state-specific employment protections that go beyond federal law, while others like Texas do not. For the most part, there are consistent requirements that are good to know regardless of in which state a business has offices.

A little framework goes a long way.

Setting up the right framework helps when issues arise. Most states, and federal law, require that employers have policies to address employee complaints.

These policies should be written, not just stated at staff meetings (though that helps also). The policies should clearly state that discrimination of any form is not allowed, and all complaints will be promptly investigated. Also, employees need to know that acting out against someone who has made a complaint, or retaliating, is prohibited.

It’s tempting to respond to knocks on the door by dismissing the complaint as unjustified whining of poorly performing employees, or unfair attacks on strict managers. If people in this situation truly are righteous they will simply say "I don’t know" and leave it like that. But for those who are arrogant or ignorant they will try their best to answer the question even though they may have no idea what the Islamic stance or ruling may be. The above Ayah puts it simple and is something we should reflect on every day of our lives. We should take from the example of those pious people who came before us. People such as Imam Ahmad Ibn Hambal and Imam Shafa’ee who when faced with a question they did not know the answer to simply said "I do not know" and left it like that. This simple phrase shows the sincerity and wisdom in such men. It shows that they are seeking knowledge and not spreading if for self recognition but rather to be closer to Allah

mind, not someone who is unmindful with an absent air." [3] This then alludes to the barrier: an unmindful and inattentive heart which does not understand what is being said and, as such, is unable to reflect upon it or direct any conscious thought towards it.

Therefore, if all these things come together, the end-result is obtained: benefiting from the Qur'an and taking heed.

If someone were to ask: if the end-result, the lasting impression, is only attained by the combination of these matters, why then did Allah say "or" in the verse, "or who listens attentively" which implies a choice between one or another option?

Surely "and" should have been mentioned in its place?

It is said in reply: this is a good question; "or" has been mentioned by taking into consideration the state of the addressee.

Some people have hearts which are alive, hearts that will readily accept the truth and whose innate nature (fitrah) is intact;

One of the principles we learn from Islam is that being silent is better then speaking.

The Prophet (Salla Allahu 'Alayhee wa Sallam) said, "Whoever is silent will be successful." Also we learn that the tongue is the source of evil and that a person who guards his tongue and private parts will enter Jannah. Again we see that very few people do this, many of which do not know the consequences of their actions.

We learn from other ahadith that one word can cause you to enter hellfire for 70 years (or seasons). Such a big punishment yet we never hold are tongues and we continue to talk nonsense without thinking twice about it.

We also learn from the Prophet (Salla Allahu 'Alayhee wa Sallam) that we should "Say good or be quiet, if you are a Muslim". Now you may say, I do say good so what is the problem? If we study the Quran we learn that the best things to talk about and the most recommended

if such a person was to reflect in his very heart and turn his mind to it, he would conclude that the Qur'an is authentic and true. His heart would witness what the Qur'an informs it of and the subsequent impression upon it would be light layered on top of the light of its innate nature.

This is the description of those about whom it is said, "those who have been given knowledge see that what has been sent down to you from your Lord is the truth." [4] Concerning them, Allah says, "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The metaphor of His light is that of a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, the glass like a brilliant start, lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east nor the west, its oil all but giving off light even if no fire touches it. Light upon light! Allah guides to His Light whoever He wills, Allah propounds metaphors for mankind and Allah has knowledge of all things." [5] This verse refers to the light of the innate nature covered by the light of revelation; this is the condition of the person who has a living, receiving heart. These are the three topics we should be concentrating on when we speak. Are we trying to help our Muslim brothers and sisters when we speak? Are we trying to order good upon ourselves and others when we speak? Are we trying to unite people in good, bringing the Muslims together when we speak? If you can't answer yes to at least one of these then there is a serious problem that needs correcting.

Truly it is a sickness in the heart for one to speak about evil or issues he has no knowledge in. This is something outside of Islam, so why do we do it? We claim to be striving for the sake of Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala), yet we do not even adopt the proper mannerisms of a believer. This is a test from Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala) something which is easy upon one who looks at his own mistakes and tries his best to correct them.

Mu`attila wa'l-Jahmiyyah. [6] Therefore, the person who has this type of attentive heart receives the meanings of the Qur'an and readily accepts them so much so that it seems as if the words have been inscribed in his heart and he is able to recite them fluidly from memory.

Other people have hearts which fall below the level of those mentioned above; their hearts are not as ready to receive the truth, they are not completely alive, and their innate nature is not as refined. Therefore, they stand in need of a witness who would differentiate the truth from falsehood for them. In order to be guided, such a person must pay the utmost attention to the Qur'an's words, he must devote his heart to it, ponder it and comprehend its meanings, and only after this will he come to realize that it is true.

The first type of person sees the truth of what he is invited to and informed of with his own eyes. The second type of person has learned that it is the truth, has certainty in it and is satisfied. The first has attained the ranking of beneficence, ihsan and the second has attained the ranking of faith, iman. The first has attained `ilm al-yaqin from which his heart has ascended to the degree of `ayn al-yaqin. The second

There are many ahadith and ayat from the Qur’an that speak on this issue but there is not much need to get into every single one of them. The main point is we should not speak unless needed and what we speak of should be something productive.

Everyday we should analyze ourselves and truly think about what we did in our day and what we may have said. This is the only method of correct, to find our own mistakes and work on improving what we are weak in. Do we wish to be amongst those people in hell fire because of what we may have said? This is the reality and only we can safeguard our tongues and keep ourselves striving to be on the righteous path.

May Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala) keep us of those He loves and those whom He is well pleased with. May He teach us wisdom and give us knowledge to speak about this deen. May He correct our mistakes and help us in our path of serving him. [Source: A2Youth.com]
