possibly affiliated with Interfraternity Council (IFC) organizations Delta Sigma Phi, Phi Kappa Psi and Pi Kappa Alpha, she said.

“We heard some rumors that there were some parties over the weekend that may be greek-affiliated,” she said. “We are meeting with greek leaders of those chapters to determine the degree of which that information is accurate.”

One event DeCosta is

aware of includes a reported party on Chaplin Lane that received a citation from the San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD). The SLOPD log states there was a noise violation at an event held at the house on Friday night with more than 100 guests and alcohol present, and names two Pi Kappa Alpha members as the people police spoke to at the party.

menic Hjerpe, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, said he was at the reported party on Friday as a “social individual,” but that the party was not affiliated with his fraternity.

Though guests of the event said it was affiliated with Pi Kappa Alpha, the residence is not a registered satellite house, Hjerpe said. The president of Pi Kappa Alpha declined to comment.

“Pi Kappa Alpha did not host a fraternity party on Fri-

day night; I attended a party on Chaplin that was not fraternity-related,” Hjerpe said.

Hjerpe added that a friend who is not a member of greek life invited him to the party.

Delta Sigma Phi President and nutrition senior Gear McMillan said reports of his fraternity hosting an event are “clearly a misunderstanding.” As of Wednesday afternoon, he had not heard anything from DeCosta regarding the issue.

“There is no possibility to investigate a Delta Sigma Phi event because there was no event,” McMillan said.

“We have refrained from having any social events that could even be considered ‘parties.’”

The third event being looked into is a party held on Friday night at an apartment on Kentucky Street.

The president of Phi Kappa Psi did not return multiple requests for comment.

New party policy approved Brooke Sperbeck @BrookeSperbeck7 All fraternities and sororities are off social probation after passing a party registration policy Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release from university spokesperson Matt Lazier.

In the release, Vice President for Student Affairs Keith Humphrey said the administration approved the policy after fraternities and sororities agreed on it.

“We believe this is an important new tool in helping our students maintain their own health and well-being, and develop good neighbor and community relations,” Humphrey said in the release.

The final draft of the policy limits the dates and times organizations can host events and prohibits drink-

ing games, the press release states. Policies forbidding kegs and hard alcohol are also reinforced in the agreement.

The policy also lays out a judicial process in case an organization disobeys the rules.

“The first two offenses would lead to a written warning and a student Greek judicial council meeting, respectively,” the press release states.

“Subsequent offenses will lead to immediate social probation. In all cases, the judicial council and Dean of Students Office would review and could issue additional sanctions based on the nature of each infraction.”

The passed policy is effective immediately and puts an end to a four-week period of social probation.

Parties during probation hint at trouble for new policies OPINION Sean McMinn @shmcminn Students dressed in party attire carrying half-empty fifths down the street and bouncers in costume welcoming people to a fraternity party: This most certainly was not what Cal Poly administrators had in mind when they placed greek life on social probation this quarter.

For five consecutive weekends, Cal Poly greek life has been barred from partying because of delays in the approval of a new party registration policy. But an unenforceable ban on parties isn’t a ban at all, and what we’ve seen these past few weeks has highlighted the complications of enforcing rules on a population that doesn’t want to follow them.

While walking and driving in the neighborhood near campus on the night of Feb. 7, we saw at least two parties that attendees said were fraternity-affiliated: one at an apartment with widely-known ties to Phi

Kappa Psi, and the other at a house that attendees told us Pi Kappa Alpha was using to host a party.

The president of Pi Kappa Alpha declined to comment, and Phi Kappa Psi’s president didn’t return multiple requests asking for more information.

Since then, we’ve learned the university is “looking into” these two parties, as well a third that was reportedly affiliated with Delta Sigma Phi. Dean of Students Jean DeCosta, who took over supervising greek life since an organizational shift was made this year, declined to provide further detail on what her office has found so far.

Several factors make parties — both greek and nongreek — difficult to regulate.

They can be at any location, can take place at any time and aren’t always at a central location of the organization that hosts them.

But as we’ve seen during the first half of this quarter, regulating fraternity parties is especially difficult for one reason: The parties’ hosts won’t cooperate.

The two parties we saw

were likely just the tip of the iceberg. Materials engineering sophomore and Sigma Nu member Sam Randall said he’s heard of parties going on throughout the duration of probation — and that it’s essentially common knowledge for Cal Poly students.

Other greek life members scoffed when asked about the fact that they haven’t been allowed to have alcohol-related events for the past five weekends. We also saw Interfraternity Council President Domenic Hjerpe speak with police at a house which attendees said hosted a Pi Kappa Alpha party on Friday.

Hjerpe told Mustang News that the party was not a fraternity event.

On Wednesday, greek life leaders and administrators agreed on a party registration compromise with rules that are even more nuanced and therefore more difficult to enforce than the complete ban we’ve seen the past five weeks. The policy will supposedly end shots, pre-gaming, drinking games and hard alcohol at greek life events. It also requires parties to end at 1 a.m. and

for chapters to submit paperwork 10 days in advance if more than 100 people are planning to attend.

Under the new policies, a “student managed alcohol team” will be enforcing the rules on the ground. But greek life chapters already had something similar at their parties with sober monitors, and it was a rare occurrence that a chapter was sanctioned because a member turned them in for something alcohol-related, such as underage drinking. Trusting these sober fraternity members to put an end to shots, hard alcohol and drinking games is risky, if not foolish.

The compromise, which was the result of months of work from both greek life leaders and administrators, seems to be the best chance Cal Poly has at bringing fraternity parties in line with their vision of what an offcampus party should look like. But if I didn’t expect to see any fraternity parties when I drove around on Friday during probation, I’m not holding my breath everyone will be following the rules next Friday.

99% cycles to San Luis Obispo

Sara Natividad Special to Mustang News Dirk Spits left his comfortable life in Amsterdam, hopped on a bike with 80 pounds on his back and began his toughest physical challenge yet — a 17,000-mile ride from the northernmost tip of Alaska to the southernmost tip of Argentina.

During his 70-mile-a-day journey through 15 countries, he hopes his zeal will raise awareness for his foundation 99%RIDE, which donates money to underprivileged children unaccustomed to stability in both their homes and schools.

After cycling more than 2,500 miles, Spits will stop in San Luis Obispo to teach people about 99%RIDE’s cause.

At a presentation hosted by the Cal Poly recreation, parks and tourism administration department, Spits will ask the Cal Poly community to “give 1 percent of their time, money and knowledge” on Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. in Alan A. Erhart Agriculture (building 10), room 225 while he shares stories of his travels, his mission for 99%RIDE and the children it will benefit.

The money will be donated to four projects geared toward improving schools and living conditions for children in South America. Their efforts will be videotaped to show donors how their money is being spent.

One of the projects in Colombia gives children an incentive to stay in school by providing

them with the opportunity and equipment to be on a soccer team, as long as they don’t drop out.

99%RIDE, van Eenbergen immediately jumped aboard and used his communications experience to get volunteers to help create the foundation’s image.

“I come from a comfortable home where we can afford to have a glass of wine every night,” van Eenbergen said.

“But I know many people are less fortunate. You come to a place in your life where you just want to do something and do it for yourself.”

After extensive networking, they raised enough money for their travel and operational expenses. Since the start of Spit’s ride, they have raised $6,000 and van Eenbergen and Sokehoe will continue to travel ahead of Spits, as long as they still have enough money for gas

and $6 dollars a day for food.

Despite daily meals of white beans and tomato sauce with pasta, the two are happy with their adventure and have been rewarded by the people they’ve interacted with. They do not have a set monetary goal in mind and want to contribute to more projects if their ventures are successful.

The organization is raising awareness in communities and visiting elementary schools to show children the other side of life.

Van Eenbergen said he realized their efforts were making an impact in this world when a 6-year-old girl named Zoey handed him a dollar and a penny and said, “I want to give my 1 percent.”

Rugby club players’ suspension lifted Celina Oseguera @celinaoseguera The Cal Poly Dean of Students Office lifted the suspension from the five rugby club members who were allegedly involved in an assault this past month, university spokesperson Matt Lazier wrote in an email.

However, with the university investigation still ongoing, the Dean of Students Office will still put one or all the members back on probation if incriminating evidence is found.

“The Dean’s Office reserved the right to put the players out of action again if any new evidence comes to light while the investigation is being finalized,” Lazier wrote.

The ban was lifted in time for the rugby club’s match against UC Davis on Feb. 1.

Cal Poly won 37-5.

According to the San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD), the five team members allegedly assaulted an individual at a residency on Foothill Drive around 2 a.m. on Jan. 12.

The victim told officers in

charge of the investigation that he was punched and hit with bottles, SLOPD Capt.

Chris Staley said.

With the SLOPD investigation over, the assault case should have gone to the San Luis Obispo District Attorney’s office. Several calls were made to the office to see if they accepted the case. They did not respond.

Whether or not the suspects will be prosecuted is determined at the district attorney’s office.

Cal Poly administration was informed of the assault several days after it occurred.

Cal Poly’s Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities responded by placing the entire team on suspension from all rugby-related activities, including their match against UC Santa Cruz.

The team-wide ban was lifted Jan. 21, according to Lazier.

The five members remained barred from rugby games until the UC Davis game.

According to Lazier, the university investigation is in its final stages.

The SLOPD and university investigations are complete-

ly separate procedures.

Though SLOPD often gives the university the results of their investigation to help the process, the university has its own system of filing charges and determining punishments.

First, an investigation is conducted. If the university finds grounds to charge the student or students, they will have an administrator meet with them to discuss the claims and possibly reach a resolution immediately.

If a resolution is not met at this stage, then the university schedules a hearing. These hearings are similar to generic court hearings — the accused and the accuser present their evidence and make their case. An informal resolution can still be reached at this point.

If a resolution is not reached, the hearing officer in charge of the hearing would submit an informational report to the university president. The president then makes the final decision.

As part of an effort to make Cal Poly more residential and accommodate the growing number of students living on campus, the Cal Poly Student Affairs Division will begin to play a major role in directing Campus Dining.

The shift means student Affairs will seek input from students and relay those suggestions to Cal Poly Corporation, which runs Campus Dining, with the expectation that the corporation will put those requests into play.

“Many things need to evolve to make sure we can serve the students and support more students,” Vice President for Student Affairs Keith Humphrey said. “We’re involved in the programmatic direction of Dining.

“My job is, in all things, to listen to the needs of the community and figure out how to make them happen,” he added.

This might mean changes for Cal Poly Corporation’s Student Dining Committee,

which currently acts as the liaison between the student body and Campus Dining.

“We have to make sure we’re using it in the right way,” Humphrey said.

“Maybe it’s something that evolves into a larger committee that the university holds — we haven’t had that conversation yet.

What’s important for students to know is that their feedback is valued.”

Apart from structuring dining services to reflect the push towards a residential campus, at this time Student Affairs doesn’t have any concrete plans.

The division is planning on taking the rest of the 20132014 academic year to consult students and the Cal Poly Corporation before making any adjustments.

“I think everything is on the table,” Humphrey said. “It’s a great opportunity to look afresh at our dining program.”

Student Affairs has already heard people want healthier food, a greater variety and increased options for those with special diets.

“In big cities, for example, you can go online to a gro-

cery store’s website and order some things, and then say, ‘I’m going to come by between 5 and 7 p.m. to pick them up,’” Humphrey said. “That may be a service we offer students.”

Though Humphrey said the residential campus vision would likely mandate a meal plan, that doesn’t mean one of freshmen’s biggest grievances will go unaltered.

“Maybe the meal plan won’t require certain number of meals at certain number of locations,” Humphrey said. “That might be something we look at, if today’s students want more flexibility in when and where they eat.”

Humphrey is hopeful this development will let students know the university is eager to listen to their needs.

“Students are coming to Cal Poly for a specific experience,” he said. “We want that reflected in every aspect of the university.”

Humphrey said he is eager to hear from students, suggesting they send him an email, come to his office hours from 4 to 5 p.m. on Mondays or set up an appointment to see him.

Culture shock: Cal Poly adapts to increased diversity Suha Saya @suhasaya For some students, a familiar face is hard to find.

If she hadn’t searched for diversity through different clubs and activities, business administration senior Carina Mercado said her experience at Cal Poly would have been very different.

“I’ve only seen more diversity because I’ve gone out looking for it,” she said.

“But generally, as far as classes, I don’t think that they have become more diverse over the years.”

Mercado, a co-coordinator for PolyCultural weekend, recognized when students first tour Cal Poly, they may experience culture shock.

“If students don’t see the other side of Cal Poly – the welcoming aspect of PolyCultural weekend or the option to participate in the Educational Opportunities or summer bridge program – they might not want to come,” she said.

But over the years, the number of students who attend Cal Poly and go to PolyCultural weekend has increased, she said.

And according to associate director for Admissions and Recruitment Melissa Furlong, that’s not the only number that has increased.

Underrepresented minorities in freshman applicants have increased from approximately 4,000 a decade ago to more than 13,000 this year. They now make up 30.8 percent of the application pool, compared to 18.8 percent 10 years ago, she said.

The number of underrep-

resented minorities transfer applicants has also increased. From 814 a decade ago to 2,529 in 2014, they now make up 32.2 percent of the overall applicant pool.

“We utilize a lot of predictive modeling — College Board has a search service, and we’re able to identify all underrepresented prospects through that database,” she said. “We have a very targeted marketing campaign.”

In the beginning of February, Cal Poly admissions held an overnight outreach program to approximately 200 students and 25 counselors as a part of the Cal Poly Partners Pre-Collegiate Symposium program.

Most of the 221 partner schools serve communities with high numbers of firstgeneration or economically disadvantaged students, Furlong said.

However, while there has been a large increase in the number of students who apply to Cal Poly, the increase in enrollment hasn’t been as extreme.

“Back in 2004, our enrolled minority population was 331, but for fall of 2013, it was around 900,” she said. “We’ve definitely seen some growth because they’re now 18 percent of our population, but there’s room for improvement.”

With California’s Proposition 209, public universities are not allowed to use race, gender or ethnicity in the selection process at all, she said.

“It’s only for demographics and data purposes,” Furlong said. “You’ll notice that at any CSU or UC, but private schools have more of a leeway.”

Despite the proposition applying to all public schools, Furlong admitted some CSUs and UC schools are considered to be more diverse.

“The city of San Luis Obispo is probably not the most diverse of cities to start with,” she said. “Although we’re in California, we’re in a pretty small town and a rural area.”

Scholarship opportunities offered by the UC system and other schools may also be a factor for the lack of underrepresented minorities at Cal Poly, Furlong said.

“We do lose a lot of students because they possibly have better scholarship opportunities at other campuses they’re applying to,” she said. “That may definitely be a factor.”

But even for Furlong, a Cal Poly alumna, moving to San Luis Obispo was a challenge.

“When I first moved here, it was a huge culture shock; it took some getting used to — finding my social network of folks, getting comfortable being in a small town.” she said. “But now you have to drag me out of SLO. It’s a nice, mellow town. There are so many amazing people here, amazing resources and the education here at Cal Poly — you honestly can’t beat it.”

Cal Poly is trying its best to solve the diversity issue by making students feel more welcome through the Cross Cultural Centers.

During the “From Party Theme to Protest” event hosted by the Cross Cultural Centers at the end of January, students brainstormed goals that included going beyond advertisements to include students of color. Some

Currently, Cal Poly participates in an outreach effort called Super Sunday, Vice Provost for Marketing and Enrollment Development James Maraviglia said.

“The president and other institutional personnel visit churches to meet with church groups,” he said. “It’s aimed at certain churches where there are a large number of underrepresented minority students.”

Maraviglia added that though campus may not be as diverse as he would like, the numbers show improvement.

“The facts show that numbers of underrepresented minorities are going up,” he said.

But Cal Poly also needs to continue working on inclusivity, he said.

“I think Cal Poly can improve in inclusivity ... something that expands beyond — but surely includes — race, gender and ethnicity,” he said. “It means providing that national and global experience ... Are we

able to address everyone?

Provide a place where differences are acknowledged and cherished? That inclusive excellence is the model that our campus is hoping to follow right now.”

Mercado agreed.

“I think a lot of us see that Cal Poly is trying to do something about diversity and that they recognize the issue,” she said. “It may be a culture shock for many of us at first, but by reaching out to those resources and programs, it’s possible to grow and adjust.”

The Temptations bring Motown back to PAC

Founded in the early 1960s, The Temptations’ R&B and pop tunes have transcended

generations and are still enjoyed by all age groups today.

“They seemed like a crossgenerational artist,” Cal Poly Arts Director Steven Lerian said. “Lots of younger people like that old Motown sound. And then, of course, the old baby boomers like me — The Temptations were right in their wheelhouse growing up.”

The vocal group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and has received four Grammy Awards.

During the 70-minute performance, the singers will perform classic pieces such as “My Girl,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” as well as more recent songs from its 2010

Audience members can expect a feel-good evening full of great music hits, Lerian said. “(The music) is nostalgic and yet very familiar,” Lerian said. “They will recognize most of the tunes, if not all of the tunes. It is just a feel-good thing — a cool, multigenerational evening.”

The five-singer group will

be accompanied by a 14-musician band, according to the Poly Tix website.

For a local presence, rock and soul original singer/songwriter Damon Castillo Trio will open for The Temptations.

“It will be a nice little treat because Damon Castillo is fantastic,” Lerian said.

This Valentine’s Day event is presented by Rotary Club

of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and proceeds will go to local youth charities as well as the Rotary’s international Polio Plus Project, which aims to eradicate polio worldwide, Lerian said.

“He told me two things very clearly. One of them was ‘Stay with her and I’m going to bless that,’ and I felt very strongly about that; the words still rattle in my brain,” he said. “And the other was: ‘Once you stop making music about you, I’m going to use it.’”

“Her” is Kayla Hooper — his wife of four years, bandmate and quite literally the harmony to his melody. And though Kayla, 27, is a jack-of-alltrades, a beautiful vocalist who also plays pretty much any instrument Justin dares her to, Kayla’s influence on the band is most seen in lyrics she doesn’t write. Kayla is the muse.

“I do have to admit, at least half the songs are written for — or about — Kayla,” said 26-yearold Justin, frontman for folk-pop band The Simple Parade.

“So I sing about myself … often,” Kayla retorted with a chuckle.

The Simple Parade includes the Hoopers, Lance Lunker and Shawn Clark, all Cal Poly alumni or current students.

“Heart Strings,” a song on the new album, includes a verse about Lunker, the drummer, written before he joined the group. The song, about things that tug at heart strings, tells Lunker’s story.

“He went to Iraq and was severely wounded, and he should have died,” Justin explained.

“His car went off a 75-foot overpass and flipped

on top of him while they were bringing in some enemies, and miraculously, he survived and made a full recovery. He came back home and they had this huge reception for it, and I went to that and got inspired and wrote about it. Now, six years later, he’s the drummer for it.”

The band, created through a few well-timed twists of fate, has its first full-length album ready to record. And given that Hooper is the songwriter, it’s a love album.

“It’s really mushy and sappy and all that jazz,” Justin explained.

“It makes you feel,” Kayla said and closed her eyes behind square frames, a fraction longer than a blink, nearly unnoticeable in the most significant of ways.

The band’s sound, a hodge-podge most aptly described as alt-folk pop, is what would burst out of your speakers if you put Ingrid Michaelson, Mumford & Sons, Ben Folds and bluegrass into a Pandora preferences station.

Its recently-released debut single, “Confetti,” is a carpe diem anthem fit for a slow-motion road trip to nowhere.

“It’s a pretty upbeat, blast of sunshine kind of song,” Justin said.

“A good summer day, roll down the windows by the beach, enjoy life kind of song,” Kayla added.

And so was the pace of their conversation.

A joke about her finding the ring in his pocket and pretending to not have. A laugh about her response when he was down on one knee: “Yes, I think so, yes.” (It was a “yes” sandwich, so they just ignore the “I think so” these days.) A smile when they talk about each other’s families.

Nods and chuckles at the idea of baby Hoopers running around in the not too distant future (“I want to name her ‘Hula’ if we have a girl,” Justin joked. “If we get big enough in music, we can name our kids anything.”).

And, of course, a brief moment of silence before they begin a song together live, completely unrehearsed, completely on key, completely in love — a love seemingly so perfect, it’s almost hard to believe it’s real.

But of course the album sheds light on that, too, Justin said.

The album is a lyrical journey through Justin’s past seven or so years, a journey from the “whimsical idea of what love is” to falling for Kayla, getting married at 23 years old and “realizing what true love really is — how much work it is, but also how worth it.”

The album also takes a deeper look at love, delving into the love between a father and son and the love of a divine power, for example.

Though the Hoopers met leading church youth groups, don’t call it a Christian album.

“I’m a Christian, and I believe in God and what Christ did, but I write songs about everything,” Justin said. “But if you listen closely, you’ll hear that that is one of the things I’m passionate about.”

Over the past few years, Justin has struggled with various health issues. At one point, the 6-foot-tall man weighed only 130 pounds and “looked like Gollum,” he said.

But when he plays music with The Simple Parade, it “literally feels like it heals” him, he said.

And that’s the feeling the Hoopers are hoping to spread.

“The word that keeps coming to me is just ‘hope,’” Kayla said. “Our purpose behind what we do is not for ourselves. Of course we love music, but I think we’re the vessel to bring love to the world through our own creative process.”

Making music, though, takes money. Soon, The Simple Parade will launch a crowdfunding campaign to raise $12,000 to get the band to Denver, Colo. this summer to record its full-length album. Justin said a portion of the profits from that album’s future sales will help fund music education programs, which he supported in his undergraduate senior project thesis.

The Simple Parade? They’re not just looking to make it. They’re looking to make a difference.

You walk into an ice cream parlor and order a scoop of your favorite flavor, strawberry. A few moments later, some dude walks in and orders what he proclaims out loud to be his favorite flavor, rocky road. Both of you believe your flavor of ice cream is the best flavor.

So naturally, you become instant, mortal and existential enemies. You have a lot of reasons why strawberry is the best and rocky road is not, but ultimately, all you know is that you enjoy strawberry more than you enjoy rocky road. This isn’t something either of you will budge on, and after the dust settles, the cashier is unconscious, a chair has broken the window, tables are overturned and neither of you are really sure why you are fighting.

That’s kind of what the relationship between the United States and al-Qaeda is like. The more you know.

But let’s break this relationship down, because the two entities have been yelling at and fighting against each other for a while. Even though at one point the United States, or more specifically the CIA, helped fund and arm al-Qaeda to fight the Russians, the recent vibes of communication are … strained.

More importantly, no one appears to be curious as to what someone means when they say, “Death to the West!” I doubt they wish destruction upon the western world because they are jealous of our SUVs, health care system and Six Flags Magic Mountain (though I can see how people would want that last one).

And truthfully, the rhetoric we send back isn’t exactly the most welcoming either. “The only way to defeat terrorism as a threat to our way of life is to stop it, eliminate it and destroy

it where it grows,” President George W. Bush said after the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York.

The friend-enemy distinction, talked about in length by political theorist Carl Schmitt, is one where two opposing sides hold fundamentally different viewpoints about some subject. They are, for all intents and purposes, existential enemies, or enemies to the core. This difference on viewpoints can manifest itself in various different areas, such as how government should be run, how the universe came into existence or which ice cream flavor is the best. Obviously strawberry.

Throughout history, we have seen this distinction be a driving force for the United States when confronting its political enemies abroad, and our justification for this force is that we are spreading democracy and peace.

Could it be that these same justifications for war in order to achieve peace are used by other entities? When two bodies who both believe they can spread peace by annihilating the “enemy,” we get both wars in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and Congressional gridlock, to name a few.

What is regarded as the driving theoretical force behind al-Qaeda may provide the answer to why it and the United States remain enemies. Milestones, a book written by Sayyid Qutb in 1964, attempts to lay out what the role of Islam in the modern world should be. It is a compelling book, yet one whose claims are not necessarily accepted by all Muslims. It did, however, have a significant influence on al-Qaeda during the late 1980s.

The ultimate goal for Qutb is peace.

Cool, glad we agree on something.

Unfortunately, the methods through which he believes peace to be brought about are methods that I — and the United States — cannot accept.

Qutb believes “Humanity is devoid of those vital values which are necessary not only for its healthy development but also for its real progress.” Islam,

“Our values, basis of government and beliefs about the world stand fundamentally at odds with the values of al-Qaeda.”

the true progressive which he states is a way of life as compared to just a religion, is the solution to this issue of a lack of values. His peace requires the destruction of current oppressive structures of culture, society and government in order to make way for a new government where the core tenants of Islam are the basis through which government is run. His belief is God’s law is supreme law, and therefore should be followed in all instances. There is no alternate option.

This is how and why al-Qaeda opposes us. It is not because we had a minor disagreement on how to run government. Our values, basis of government and beliefs about the world stand fundamentally at odds with the values of al-Qaeda. Furthermore, they think the only course of action is the systematic destruction of any society that does not base its laws on God’s law.

Once more, Qutb and al-Qaeda hold that “Islam asks: ‘Do you know better, or does God?’ and then answers it: ‘God knows and you do not know.’ Do you know better than God about law and government? No, you don’t. So

shut up, mortal.

Recently, an article entitled “Is The U.S. Powerless to Stop the Spread of alQaeda?” attempted to pinpoint how efforts of democratization in the Middle East have failed to prevent the spread of Islamic extremist views such those held by al-Qaeda. I wanted to clearly point out our attempted spread of democracy may in fact be causing the growth and spread of al-Qaeda.

Additionally, do our attempts at spreading democracy appear no different to them than how al-Qaeda appears to us as it spreads its message?

We move in with guns, with tanks and with planes, occupy their territory, dismantle their system of government and replace it with our own, because we claim it to be “better.” If they hold fundamentally different beliefs about the world and government, then how can we expect them to embrace democracy in the same way that we do?

This is Zachary Antoyan, trying to live his life by this creed: maximize chill, minimize un-chill. Have a very chill week, everyone.

Women’s soccer players coach youth teams Keenan Donath @CPMustangSports While passion for a sport often manifests itself in heightened on-field performance, it can also be seen in the coaches on the sidelines guiding their teams to victory.

At Cal Poly, a handful of women’s soccer players can say they have experienced these dual perspectives in an effort to learn more about the game they love and to give back to the local community.

Forward Elise Krieghoff, who led the NCAA in goals for much of this past season, moonlights as a coach for the women’s junior varsity team at San Luis Obispo High School.

She described how she first got initiated into the world of coaching as serendipitous.

“It just kind of fell in my lap,” Krieghoff said. “A really good friend on the soccer team asked, ‘Do you want to coach with me this year?’

“Expectations here a lot higher,” Torres said. “Last year we knew we were good, we knew we had the talent and we obviously showed that by making regionals … After last year and proving ourselves a bit and really emerging on the map, I think we’ve put ourselves in a good position to make another run for the postseason this year.”

Torres, who hit .333 with seven home runs and 49 RBI, will be back for his junior season.

And I was like, ‘Sure, I think I could do this pretty well.’ Sure enough, I really enjoyed it.”

While the hiring process may have been casual, Krieghoff quickly learned a certain level of commitment would be necessary in order for her to do the job well.

“People underestimate coaching,” Krieghoff said.

“We have to be there every single day for two hours, whether that is implementing a practice or making sure everybody went to school or making sure everyone is on time for practices. It’s a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it.”

And Krieghoff’s partnership with the team seems to be paying dividends. Krieghoff, along with fellow coach and Cal Poly teammate Nicole Wheeler, has led her team to a 19-1-1 record so far this season.

As an athlete in a competitive NCAA Division I program, Krieghoff admits it can be difficult standing on the sidelines

when the team is struggling.

“If we are down in a game, we just want to suit up and go out and play for them,” Krieghoff said.

But her experience coaching has taught her not to worry too much, even when she knows her players could be playing better.

“As a coach, you learn to be patient and you have to let them figure it out, and as a player, you don’t want your coach yelling and screaming at you on the sideline,” Krieghoff said. “I learned a lot of patience coaching, and it kind of helps my game, too.”

Krieghoff is not the only one benefiting from her coaching experience. In addition to her and Wheeler, six other Cal Poly women’s soccer players gained coaching experience this season.

Juniors Lauren Heer and Cynthia Garcia coach the women’s freshman team at San Luis Obispo High School, and senior Kacey Held is

an assistant coach for the high school’s women’s varsity team. Goalkeeper Megan Heddinger is a women’s soccer coach at Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School, and sophomores Sara

Epps and Robin Mertens are coaches for the San Luis Obispo Fire Department women’s club team.

When asked about a potential career in coaching, Krieghoff likes to keep it simple.

“[Coaching] is just something that I do for fun; it really just helps to develop more people skills,” Krieghoff said.

“And if you are able to teach what you love, I think it really helps my game, too.”

campaign will be left-handed pitcher Matt Imhof. After a successful stint as a reliever with USA baseball this past summer, Imhof returns as the Friday night ace. He compiled a 7-3 record with a 2.74 ERA last season as the Saturday night starter.

“We should be much better offensively, we should be better defensively, should have a strong bullpen and obviously be strong at the No. 1 spot in the rotation with Imhof,” head coach Larry Lee said.

Despite being drafted by Major League Baseball teams this past June, senior third baseman Jimmy Allen and junior

reliever Reed Reilly also headline the returning players for the Mustangs.

Freshman hurler Slater Lee will handle the Saturday pitching duties, while fellow freshman Justin Calomeni will throw on Tuesdays. Lee went 11-2 with a 1.34 ERA as a senior at Carlsbad High School, and Calomeni finished his final season at Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose with an 8-1 record and a 1.07 ERA. Lee said his team’s success will hinge on how those young arms fare in the early part of a tough non-conference schedule.

“Both are capable of being

successful, but we just need to speed up the developmental process,” Lee said. “We’re asking them, as freshmen, not to act like freshmen.”

The Mustangs were selected to finish second in a loaded Big West Conference in the preseason coaches poll released last week. Cal State Fullerton, ranked No. 1 in the USA Today Baseball Top 25 Coaches Poll, was picked to win the conference.

picked to finish first in their conference for the first time in school history.

Cal Poly took two of three games against the Wildcats in Manhattan, Kan. in 2013 when then-freshman designated hitter Brian Mundell announced his arrival on the scene with two home runs and four RBIs in the opening contest of that series. Mundell went on to hit a program freshman record 11 dingers in 2013.

He’s coming off Tommy John surgery in the offseason, but is slated to start at DH and bat in the No. 4 spot in the lineup for the Mustangs on opening day.

“It’s a mature lineup; we’re very physical in our lineup,” Lee said. “Last year, we were very much an underachieving offense. We didn’t produce very well. That wasn’t one of the main reasons why we won so many games last year.”

First pitch at Baggett Stadium is set for 6 p.m. in the Friday and Saturday games, while a 1 p.m. start is slated for the Sunday game.

BASEBALL IS BACK

Stephan Teodosescu @steodosescu Cal Poly baseball had a banner year last season. The Mustangs finished second in the Big West Conference, set a school Division I record by winning 40 games and reached the regional round of the postseason for just the second time in program history.

But none of that mattered considering the way 2013 ended.

Cal Poly was ousted from the NCAA Los Angeles Regional after an elimination-game loss to the University of San Diego and a dropped a heartbreaker to eventual national champion UCLA. Against the Bruins, thensophomore outfielder Nick Torres misplayed a fly ball to right field that, if caught, would have ended the inning and sent the Mustangs to the plate with a 4-0 lead headed to the seventh.

Instead, the ball dropped

behind Torres to clear the bases and jumpstart UCLA’s four-run rally in the inning, which eventually ended in a 6-4 defeat for Cal Poly. The Bruins would go on to win the remainder of their games and earned their first College World Series title.

The Mustangs used that loss and their premature postseason exit as fuel for the 2014 season.
