O ne of the scariest things I’ve done is begin college in the middle of a pandemic. Coming to college as a freshman, I had no idea what to expect. Hundreds of questions swirled around in my brain daily: Who will I meet? What am I going to do? Who am I going to become?

Showing up at college on the first day is like approaching a blank canvas with endless possibilities to create something beautiful. Regardless of all of the fears and expectations I had going into a brand new environment, my freshman year was transformative, to say the least. It was challenging and thrilling all at once, but along the way, I discovered endless resources Cal Poly has to offer freshmen students that saved me as a freshman and, approaching my junior year of college, I find myself still leaning on these resources to help me thrive as a Withstudent.somany

This fall, Cal Poly welcomes and invites you to begin a very special journey--one on which you will read books that change your life, learn things that change your mind, do experiments that change your understanding, and hopefully find ways to change the world. We don’t know who you will be when you graduate, but we know from experience that you won’t be who you are today. Thank you for taking that journey with us—we consider it an honor! You already know that Cal Poly’s motto is Learn by Doing, and you probably know that we often connect that motto to our hands-on style of education and the idea that our graduates are Ready Day One for work and life. Those things are true! Yet I’d like to invite you to think about Learn by Doing more broadly. Learn by Doing means the scientific method— accumulating knowledge and experience gradually, and basing our theories on our evidence. It means trial and error, and not being afraid to be wrong or to admit you were wrong. It means showing up and putting in the work so that you really understand—you won’t learn it if you don’t do it. It means pushing yourself just a little past what you already know, then doing it again and again. I know that coming to Cal Poly represents the culmination of a lot of hard work.

I want to congratulate you on your achievements so far and thank you for choosing Cal Poly as the place where you take the next steps. The campus is ready for you! University Housing is ready to house you. The Rec Center is ready to help you stay fit. Campus Dining is ready to nourish you. W elcome Mustangs! At Cal Poly, we invest heavily in resources to help you transition smoothly to college, including Open House, SLO Days, and WOW. But even if you attended these orientation events, you may still have unanswered questions about how to navigate the campus and community. You may feel excited, nervous, or scared about embarking on a new chapter in your life. The good news is – you are not alone. There are many people at Cal Poly to support, encourage, and guide you. My commitment to you, as the Dean of Students, is that I’m here to help you have the best college experience possible. My role is to support and advocate for students across the university. I work with students, parents, faculty, campus partners, and community members to help students achieve their full potential. Based on my experiences with students and almost 20-years in higher education, here are my top 10 tips for being successful in your first year (and beyond).

1. BE AUTHENTIC Being authentic helps you attract the kind of friends you want to be around. If you pretend to be someone you aren’t, in hopes of fitting in, you will find yourself disappointed by those around you.

Students who have frequent contact with faculty members are more satisfied with their college experience, are more likely to graduate, and perceive themselves to have learned more than students who have less faculty contact.

Many high achievers are accustomed to studying alone (or not at all). Since we recommend studying 25-35 hours a week, to make friends and find time to study it’s helpful to form a study group.

Pick five areas of interest and look for ways to get involved in those areas through clubs. Follow their social media, attend their events, reach out to the club officers and attend a meeting. Research shows that students who are involved in co-curricular activities have higher GPAs than those who were not involved on campus.

9. ASK QUESTIONS You may be surprised what you can learn when you ask. Whether you’re lost on campus or looking for a place to eat, don’t hesitate to ask. Upper-class students, academic advisors, faculty and staff are great people to turn to and want to help you.

2. BE PATIENT Many students experience a period of confusion, uncertainty, and the feeling that everyone else has it figured out. The reality is - it takes most students about a year to figure it out. It takes time to make friends, find your way around, and learn where you like to study and hang out.

7. VOLUNTEER Helping others is one of the best ways to help yourself. Volunteering has many benefits, including a sense of purpose, meeting new people, increasing social skills, and learning valuable skills. Check out volunteer opportunities through the Center for Service in Action. You can find these events on Cal Poly Now.

There is a tendency to want to pair up with people who are similar to you, but one of the greatest opportunities in college is to meet people who have different identities, experiences, and interests.

Dr. Joy Pedersen has worked at Cal Poly since 2003 and currently serves as Dean of Students. In this role, she serves as the point of contact for student crisis intervention and is responsible for directly supporting the success and wellbeing of Cal Poly students.

A TRUSTED STUDENT OMBUDS SERVICES

The three pillars of Ombuds Services are confidentiality, informality, and neutrality. This means the Ombuds always keep your information private unless there is an observed risk of serious harm to oneself or others or issues about sexual misconduct. Because of the confidentiality and informality of the office, no formal reports are made about any issues shared with the Ombuds. The service is really about problem-solving skills and empowering students without judgment. To remain trustworthy and impartial, the Ombuds is not an office of notice for the university or an advocate for the students. Rather than an advocate, the Ombuds can be viewed as a messenger of the students to the university. Student Ombuds confidentially report students’ issues to the President’s Office to inform the administration of shared experiences and challenges on campus. Starting college can be unknown and scary, presenting endless questions to answer and challenges to overcome.

CH&W is here to support students seeking and actively in recovery from substance addiction. Over two decades as a Cal Poly professor and administrator, Wendt highlights the dramatic uptick in research opportunities for students that have strengthened the Learn by Doing experience.

Students have worked shoulder-toshoulder with faculty to document galaxies in the universe, prevent the spread of e-cigarette usage, investigate new polymers for drug delivery, better understand the decline of a plant on Anacapa Island and develop a new campus lab to conduct Cal Poly’s saliva-based and wastewater COVID-19 surveillance tests– to name a few of the hundreds of investigative studies.

“To me, the Teacher-Scholar Model means that our faculty are engaged in high-quality instruction, and they’re engaged in scholarship discipline,” Wendt said. “It’s so exciting for students to know that the person they’re learning from is contributing to their field and then students get the opportunity to contribute to that work as research collaborators. That is really powerful.”

W hen Dean Wendt, the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), was an undergraduate student at Cal Poly in the early 1990s, he had to go to a lab at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant to do his in-person Today,research.on-campus research is prevalent in and around the college that can capably handle the needs of the CSM’s 2,700 students. It’s one of the many attributes of the college that has elevated its undergraduate research and overall instruction to significant and impactful levels, attracting top students from throughout California, the United States, and the world. In addition to its research opportunities, CSM champions diversity, equity and inclusion, Learn by Doing and the Teacher-Scholar Model in which faculty engage students in teaching, research, scholarship and creative activities. “The college is a place where you will grow personally and soon become part of exciting work and a vibrant community,” Wendt said. “Being open to new ideas, concepts and our differences as people helps us understand each other and the world around us.”

JOIN OF INNOVATORS AT THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

BY LAUREN EMO T he College of Engineering (CENG) is one of many colleges within the nationally ranked university of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. CENG strives to “provide an excellent Learn by Doing education and graduate in-demand, day-one ready Offeringprofessionals.”14bachelor degree programs and 11 master degree programs, CENG includes esteemed programs like Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering and more. In 2022, the College of Engineering made many achievements and was recognized for innovation and creativity across the board. In July, a group of environmental engineering students won the Environmental Challenge International award (ECi) at the Air and Waste Management Association Conference in San Francisco. This team of students proposed a regulatory plan, acting as the role of the new California governor, to reduce emissions from vessels in the San Francisco Bay. Another group of CENG students on the Cal Poly Supermileage team won first place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 2022 Shell Eco-Marathon event for the Prototype Battery Electric category in April. The Cal Poly Supermileage team consisted of computer engineering, aerospace engineering, and mechanical engineering students. Cal Poly General Engineering student Nick Campbell was awarded the 2022 Advance Energy STEM Diversity Scholarship in June for representing, “the next generation of diverse, innovative and entrepreneurial workforce,” said Chief Technology Officer at Advance Energy in an interview from CENG. Campbell received a $20,000 grant for tuition cost and professional mentoring and an internship opportunity at Advanced Energy. Cal Poly Mechanical Engineering Professor Dr. Mohammad Noori recently obtained a patent for an original earthquake protection system that he invented in partnership with colleague Dr. Narjabadifam in Iran. The basis behind the patent is an alloy that absorbs the earthquake’s destructive energy to lessen or prevent damage whilst maintaining its original integrity without wearing down. The final product ended up being an isolation system which uses these “smart” materials that have multiple reconfigurable components. This invention can be used to protect important equipment in places such as hospitals and communication centers, that are vulnerable to destruction with current earthquake building measures. As described, CENG is full of wonderful opportunities, and the community of not only hardworking students, but brilliantly minded professors shows through their consistent efforts and achievements. Being a part of the College of Engineering at Cal Poly opens up a world of possibilities that cannot be found anywhere else. In 2020 Cal Poly CENG was ranked 8th best engineering college in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report for best master’s and bachelor’s engineering programs, and that shows through every aspect of the college. CENG upholds and celebrates justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. CENG held their first annual CENG day of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Growing, Learning and Celebrating Together on May 13. This event was meant to provide students and staff an opportunity to learn and share accomplishments and best practices for integrating justice, equity, diversity and inclusion into their daily lives in and beyond Cal Poly. CENG recognizes that there is a diverse set of voices and minds that belong in engineering and works extensively to recognize and uplift them.

In June, a group of Cal Poly students took first place at an inclusive design competition: the IDEATE Engineering Competition. CENG students Joey Johnson, Jacob Richards and Nico Nuñes won with their senior project, a janitorial cart designed to help minimize discomfort and fatigue for those who have mobility

THE FUTURE

Theimpairments.teampartnered with Alex Zuniga, a janitor with cerebral palsy who works for local non-profit VTC Enterprises. The team developed their product with Zuniga’s guidance, sharing his experiences about the challenges that he endures while on the job, in order to create a final prototype that may ease some of those difficulties. With the kind of hands-on, Learn by Doing education that CENG provides students, they can work on real life projects such as these to change the world and help the broader community feel safe and included on campus and in every-day life.

These are lessons that students can take away from their time at Cal Poly and opportunities that will provide them with the upper-hand in future professional endeavors. Cal Poly’s College of Engineering wants to help mold their students into the leaders and thinkers of tomorrow. S tudents looking for an incredibly diverse and transformative artistic experience can find exactly that on their own college campus. Inside the Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Arts puts on lifechanging performances that consist of a broad range of high-quality programs that include professional touring performances, exhibitions, and speaking engagements. All of these shows are held in either the beautiful 1,286-seat Harold Miossi Hall, the 200-seat PAC pavilion, or the intimate 498-seat Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre. Cal Poly Arts is known for providing memorable performing arts events not only for Cal Poly but for the residents of the Central Coast. This 2022-23 season features 32 performances that highlight a widespread selection of award-winning artists across many different genres. Of these performances, 27 will be making their San Luis Obispo debut, including Tony Award Winning Broadway musical The Book of Mormon. The Cal Poly Arts will open its season on Sept. 16, the Friday of Move-In Weekend, by hosting the California International Guitar Festival. This festival brings 10 of the greatest classical guitarists in the world to San Luis Obispo for a series of concerts, masterclasses, and other activities. Tickets and more information are available at calpolyarts.org. As part of Latinx Heritage Month, Grammy award-winning Mexican Ranchera singer and actress Aida Cuevas will perform on Oct. 5. Followed on Oct. 28 by Mexicanborn indie popstar Carla Morrison. Other global music performances this season include San Salvador, a six-voice and percussion collective from southwestern France and the Aditya Prakash Ensemble who perform Carnatic music, the traditional classical style of South OtherIndia. performances to keep an eye out for this season include cabaret performances by Emmy and Tony award winner Alan Cumming and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jane Lynch, along with a one-woman show by Isabella Rossellini and a stand-up set by comedian Michelle Wolf during Mustang Family weekend on Oct. 21.

Cal Poly Arts will be hosting two speakers from National Geographic Live as well. The first speaker will be Ronan Donovan who will talk about what it means to be human and how our relationships and habits closely link us to other animals like wolves, chimpanzees and gorillas. The second speaker will be the National Geographic 2019 Adventurer of the Year, paraclimber Maureen Beck. Beck will discuss how she learned to rock climb with only one hand and how adapting non-traditional tools helped her in her Studentsascents.

PAFY is an educational enrichment program for students K-12. The program brings touring artists straight to children in their own classrooms. Last year alone, over 10,000 students, at zero cost to students or schools, were able to take part in this program. After two years of online programming, PAFY will be offering a hybrid program of both in-person and virtual events. These shows that are put on by Cal Poly Arts provide students the chance to see something that can potentially change their life in a matter of hours. Student tickets are available at a discounted price of only $10-$25 for most performances making these shows more easily accessible to many college students. However, for low-income and/or marginalized communities who may find it difficult to access these shows, Cal Poly Arts has created the “Passport to the Arts” program. This program provides free or deeply subsidized access to performing arts experiences on the Central Coast. Earning not one, but two degrees from Cal Poly is a rewarding accomplishment that can be reached through the variety of programs in Graduate Education.

Graduate Education offers master’s programs, blended degree programs and graduate certificates for all those hoping to continue their education. The mission of Cal Poly higher education is to “achieve excellence in practice-oriented professional graduate programs which place graduates into the workforce with advanced knowledge and the leadership skills necessary to prosper in an increasingly competitive global economy.” Students can pursue a master’s degree from more than 40 subject programs. These programs are offered as a separate master’s education or a blended degree option that allows undergrad students of certain majors to pursue a five-year master’s degree. Cal Poly’s five-year master’s is an opportunity for students in select majors to complete undergrad and postgrad courses simultaneously, so they can graduate with two degrees. The final type of program allows students to pursue a graduate certificate that indicates their achievement of coursework in a given field of specialized knowledge. Graduate certificates are a type of extended education, subjectspecific academic and professional opportunities to learn. As in the mission statement of Graduate Education, choosing to enroll in a master’s program can better equip students for the competitive job market and foster a standard of success in the workplace. Cal Poly’s “Learn by Doing” philosophy is also incorporated into the graduate courses, giving students situational practice to carry with them into the world. It is no secret attending a higher education institution can be costly. However, even during graduate education, there is financial assistance available. From grants to tuition waivers, the Graduate Education website provides quick access to several financial resources. Further, Cal Poly provides other types of support for its graduate students, including housing, library study rooms, health care and, best of all, supportive staff and professors. It may also be helpful to research the diversity and inclusivity resources that the International Center provides for students who are concerned about BIPOC, LGBTQ+, DACA, First Generation and Disability issues abroad. Information about social climates, laws, accessibility, human rights, racial, gender and religious diversity abroad are all available in the Inclusivity and Diversity section on the International Center website. Once you’ve gotten familiar with your options and feel ready to take on the next step in the study abroad process, you’ll have to complete the Study Abroad 101 Module found on abroad.calpoly.edu. Whether you’re on the fence, ready to go or haven’t even considered what an education abroad would look like, Cal Poly’s study abroad program can help guide you in the right direction. Besides an obvious peek into another country’s culture and the excitement of getting to know an entirely new environment, studying abroad allows students the chance to enrich their own education and immerse themselves in new perspectives and diverse communities. Cross-cultural communication and an understanding of different cultural nuances are necessary skills for any graduate looking to enter the Theworkforce.International Center has almost 500 programs to offer students in more than 75 countries. From 2019 to 2020, Cal Poly sent students all over the world: Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Spain, France, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Ghana, Egypt, China, India, Australia and many more. Before the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, a total of 973 students studied abroad including students from every college and a variety of different majors. Today, they have reintroduced study abroad travel and are sending students on memorable journeys once Thoughagain.adaunting process, deciding to go abroad and planning out your journey should start as soon as you’ve entered your first quarter at Cal Poly, or at least a year before your trip. Do yoga with friends on the community lawn or use the community kitchen to make and share a meal from home.

Put up a collage of your family and friends. You already know who your roommates are, so start coordinating with them on larger items in the room (such as rugs) that everyone will be using.

Of the more than 20,000 students that attend Cal Poly, around 8,000 live on campus. In fact, more than 5,000 of our residents are new students like you, which means you’re in good company. Cal Poly is literally a village of college students and for the next nine months, this campus will be your home. So, take some time to explore your new home when you get here. Meet your neighbors, create a space where you feel comfortable and get involved in your community. Here are a few ways you can make campus feel just like home in September: PREPARE FOR MOVE-IN To make move-in less stressful and run more smoothly, we have a certain number of appointments per zone every 15 minutes to spread out those arriving on campus. Find the link to sign-up in your housing portal starting in mid-August. Know when you plan to leave home and add extra time to allow for traffic and other reasons that may delay your arrival to SLO before you sign-up for a timeslot. If your plans change, you can go back into your portal and change your appointment until the system closes. We also recommend that you find out when your roommates plan to arrive. Stagger your arrival to lessen the number of bins coming to your room at once. With an arrival appointment, prepare for move-in by noting where you will enter campus. Campus will be closed to through traffic, so it’s important to use your move-in map and not your GPS. You will receive emails in advance of move-in with important information and maps. C al Poly’s Campus Dining experience blends diverse dining options with an easy-to-understand dining plan. Student dining plans work like a debit card. At the start of each quarter, a student’s dining plan will be allocated a specific amount of money based on the dining plan that was selected. W ith roughly 21,000 students roaming the halls and slightly less than half of that living on campus, it is only a matter of time before something ceases to work in the way that it was designed. Maybe a phone erroneously falls somewhere it wasn’t supposed to (don’t worry, it happens to all of us). This is where Facilities Management and Development (FMD) comes in.

Here are five things to know about your new best friends at FMD (that’s what their friends call them).

1. You don’t want to start a fire, and your roommates will appreciate that. Don’t plug too many electronics into one outlet.

4. Before beginning an experiment, understand what can go wrong. Know how to handle the situation, and any hazardous materials safely.

5. Cal Poly has a lot of cool equipment, some of which can pinch, crush, or entangle loose clothing or long hair. Learn about the hazards and safe operating procedures for the equipment. Be sure to tie back your hair and don’t wear loose clothing!

6. When working at elevated heights, follow all safety procedures. It’s not the fall; it’s the landing on your head that hurts.

9. Before you start working with chemicals, read and follow warning labels, as well as the Safety Data Sheets.

10. Dispose of hazardous waste properly. Never pour it down drains or discard it in the trash. If you have questions or want to learn more about how to stay safe on campus, please contact Environmental Health and Safety.

3. Spills happen; clean it up as soon as possible and when necessary, post warning signs.

2. When cooking, never leave a burner unattended. When you’re cooking that ramen noodle recipe that you saw on TikTok, don’t walk away!

7. Practice good ergonomics. Adjust your office chair and workstation so you are in a neutral posture, stretch and walk around regularly, refrain from carrying items that are too heavy and don’t ignore pain.

8. Routinely check electrical appliances and wiring. Frayed, old or damaged wires can cause fires.

On campus late? Students, faculty and staff can call Cal Poly Police and request Mustang Patrol meet and walk with you to any on-campus destination or to your vehicle parked in a campus lot.

Students, faculty and staff can register any valuable item in the personal property registration database for free. Anything of value with a serial number, such as a phone, computer or bicycle can be registered. Poly Alert PolyAlert is Cal Poly’s Emergency Notification System. To help students, faculty and staff save money and cut greenhouse gas emissions, TAPS hosts vanpool groups. Carpool permits are also available and offer designated premium parking spots in lots throughout campus. For these efforts, Cal Poly was named a “Bicycle Friendly University” by the League of American Bicyclists and one of the “Best Universities for Commuters” in the nation by the Best Workplace for Commuters Organization multiple times. TAPS is a self-sustaining department that pays employee salaries with parking permit sales. All the money generated from parking citations goes to creating and maintaining rideshare and commuting programs. CPPD CPPD protects and serves Cal Poly and the surrounding area by providing professional law enforcement services and actively promoting community involvement through progressive community policing objectives and a commitment to education.

To ensure a close connection with the campus, CPPD hosts the Public Safety Advisory Committee where members help identify and prioritize campus needs and concerns and provide recommendations for policies, procedures and programming to enhance the partnership between the department and the Cal Poly community.

Through CPPD’s Mustang Patrol program, students, faculty and staff can text or call and request a walking partner to any oncampus destination or vehicle parked in a campus lot. Public Safety’s free Rave Guardian mobile app offers Cal Poly users a single safety app that can send anonymous tips, set a safety timer for self-guided on-campus safety walks, text Mustang Patrol directly for guided walks, connect to 24-hour police or support services, and facilitate emergency communication directly with CPPD. DEM Alongside developing and maintaining campus wide emergency management programs for any potential campus hazards, DEM manages the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The EOC is a collaborative coordination system through which recommendations and frameworks are developed and presented to Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong and his cabinet. SLO County’s Regional Transit Authority (RTA) can take you to your favorite beaches and to Hearst Castle if you’re feeling fancy. To get to the beach, all you have to do is hop on the SLO Transit bus at one of the on-campus bus stops and take it to the Downtown Transit Center. From there, take the 10S RTA bus to get to Pismo Beach. If you decide that you want to check out the huge rock in Morro Bay, route 15 will get you there as well as to the surf break in Cayucos. Be sure to bring your PolyCard (also known as Cal Poly ID)! That’s your free ticket to ride. With just a swipe of your PolyCard, you can get anywhere around town for FREE.

AVILA BEACH Right in front of the homes and shops of Avila Beach, California is a wide waterfront that invites fishermen, families, volleyball players and college students to come and enjoy the sun and the sand. Located only 15 minutes from Cal Poly, Avila Beach is a popular destination for students looking for a weekend getaway. Visitors can play anything from basketball to Spikeball along the beach or walk on the sand and climb across rocks to traverse the coastline. PIRATES COVE Right next to Avila Beach is Pirates Cove, a popular location that attracts visitors looking for a unique experience due to its “clothing-optional” policy. Pirates Cove gets its name from its south-facing cove located a short hike down from the parking lot. The cove gives a stunningly beautiful view of the water, where people can watch the sun set and rise over the vast ocean landscape. Hiking further down, and descending a small rocky hill via rope, is where the water meets the sand. This is where most people settle to watch the waves crash along the shore.

Pismo Beach is the ideal place for a leisurely walk along the water or for those who are looking to stay dry. A pier that stretches over a thousand feet sits in the middle of the beach. Pismo Beach also acts as a popular surf spot, while providing 13 sand volleyball courts for more active visitors. Right next to the beach is Monarch Butterfly Grove, where thousands of butterflies flock each year between October and February. Along with many shops and restaurants, Pismo Beach is one of the most popular beaches along the Central Coast.

MONTAÑA DE ORO Known for both its beautiful beaches and breathtaking forests, Montaña de Oro State Park is a popular place that lets people take a break from the stresses of everyday life. The isolation that this destination brings enables visitors to enjoy a sense of solitude through biking, backpacking, hiking, or just enjoying the calming sound of the waves. Many of the trails at this state park provide a great view of the coastline, so be sure to set aside enough time for a hike or take a stroll along the bluffs overlooking the ocean. Montaña de Oro is also known for its miraculous tide pools where visitors can get an up-close view of a world of ocean critters in their natural habitats. Hazard Canyon Reef, also known as “Hazards,” located in Montaña de Oro State Park is a beautiful beach that is accessible by a hike through the greenery-covered sand dunes.

MORRO BAY Stretching into the skyline with Morro Rock and 450-foot smokestacks, Morro Bay is an eye-catching destination fit for paddle boarding, kayaking and surfing. Morro Bay also features a vast array of unique shopping districts consisting of supermarkets and locally owned thrift stores. Walking among the shops positioned along the water, passersby can get a glimpse of sea otters swimming amongst the fishing boats. Suckers for sand can also enjoy sand dunes and sand spits while exploring Morro Bay’s different beaches.

SHELL BEACH Below the neighborhood of the same name and at the base of steep bluffs is an area of Pismo Beach called Shell Beach. Shell Beach is home to nine separate beaches made popular due to their smaller tide pools that appear during low tides. The beach is also loved among kayakers with Dinosaur Cave Park being one of the more sought-after destinations due to the caves people can glide.

5. AXE THROWING AT BATTLE AXE $$

Since the late 1950s, the Madonna Inn has been hosting guests in their whimsically decorated rooms and providing a luxury experience for all who visit. The Madonna Inn’s over-the-top decor and brightly colored walls transport you to an enchanting stay on the Central Coast. There are 110 uniquely themed and decorated rooms available to lodge in, including rock rooms, waterfalls rooms, and rooms with eclectic, vintage furnishings. The Madonna Inn also has a famous steak house, cafe and bakery which is known for theirits lavish, decorative cakes. Located right off of Highway 101, on Madonna road, the Madonna Inn provides a one-of-a-kind stay that is guaranteed to be unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

A list of fun activities to try in San Luis Obispo; check off the list as you complete them!

The P, Madonna, Bishop’s Peak: these three peaks make up what is popularly known in San Luis Obispo as “The Tri-Tip.” The Tri-Tip Challenge has been encouraging visitors of SLO to connect to nature and get active. On Cal Poly Campus, leading to the famous painted P atop a hill behind the South Mountain Residence halls, this challenge starts with a beginner-level hike that provides a great view of campus. The next stop is Madonna Mountain, located right next to the infamous “Madonna Inn” (see no. 6). This 4-mile hike is a bit tougher, yet the view of the rolling hills is well worth it. Lastly, once you have thoroughly broken a sweat, head over to Bishops Peak to finish off with a 3.4-mile hike. Bishop’s is definitely the most challenging of the three hikes, yet the summit shows an entire view of all of SLO. Once all three hikes are completed, it is tradition for hikers to visit Firestone Grill on Higuera street to celebrate with a Tri-Tip Sandwich.

4. COUNTRY LINE DANCING $ Pull on some cowboy boots and head over to the Guild Hall to join the Grad LLC for a fun, music-filled dance night. Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. the LLC hosts “Country Night” where students of all skill sets gather to participate in line dancing. Participants must be 18 years or older and pay $10 at the door.

3. BIKE NIGHT After the farmers market, on the first Thursday of every month, the streets of downtown San Luis Obispo are blocked off while hundreds of bikers take over the area. Bike night, formally known as “The Bike Happening” is a tradition that begins around 9:30 p.m. and encourages people of all ages and skill sets to share a fun time and get active. You can see makeshift wheels and double-decker bikes ridden by people in costumes singing and playing music. Bike night begins at Mission Plaza and follows a path in a circle downtown through Marsh street and Higuera. The only three rules of bike night are as outlined on visitslo. com: “Have fun, respect our community and obey all traffic laws.”

6. VISIT/STAY AT THE MADONNA INN $$$

Fresh produce, popup restaurants, craft stands and lively street performances; every Thursday night downtown San Luis Obispo is bustling with the sounds and smells of the local farmers market. Walk down Higuera Street any time between 6 and 9 p.m. to shop for the week ahead or just grab a quick bite to eat. All downtown restaurants are open during farmer’s markets as well for some extra shopping.

There’s no better stress outlet than hurdling an axe towards a wooden target. For a unique activity in downtown San Luis Obispo, head over to Battle Axe, where you can pay for a time slot in one of 8 lanes for indoor axe throwing.

If you are looking for a weekend getaway from SLO or a day trip, there is no better option than driving along the Central Coast to see all its beauty. When starting in San Luis Obispo, the Highway 1 Discovery route will take you past hundreds of miles of the Pacific coastline, through acres of colorful farmland, uncrowded beaches, historical landmarks, colorful state parks, green vineyards and a number of animal sanctuaries. Nearing Hearst Castle, along Highway 1, you may even be shocked to see zebras and other out-of-place animals integrated with the cows and sheep, as a result of Hearst’s interesting history. Near San Simeon, you could pull over to watch the elephant seals on the beach or stop at the Monarch groves by Pismo Beach, Nipomo, Los Osos and Morro Bay to see thousands of orange wings congregate depending on the season. No matter what, the Highway 1 Discovery Route is always beautiful and provides a unique adventure that will only further nurture admiration for the Central Coast’s incomparable location.
