Ten or 20 years ago, this story might have ended differently, might have ended in tragedy.

But this story ends in applause.

Throughout the evening, one at a time, each of his Beta Theta Pi fraternity brothers had stood on that same ledge, revealed something about himself and invited any brothers who identified with him to step up onto the ledge.

Facebook for your career: CollegeFeed comes to Cal Poly Aja Frost @ajavuu CollegeFeed, a free job marketplace and career advice website, launched its partnership with Cal Poly Career Services at the beginning of winter quarter.

Traditional wisdom would suggest students steer away from social media tactics when trying to find a job. But CollegeFeed encourages it.

Applicants create a resume-like profile that, according to the website, “puts their best self forward.” CollegeFeed approves or denies applicants within 24 hours; if accepted, the site will immediately begin reaching out to companies that students have expressed interest in.

Unlike a job board, there are no lists of available positions; instead, CollegeFeed uses employee referrals, meaning students receive emails from employers directly involved in the hiring process, like managers, founders and executives.

“It’s a completely flipped model of career placement,” Vice President for Student Affairs Keith Humphrey said.

This will be good news for students like Cecilia Beauchamp, a biomedical engineering graduate student.

“What I don’t like about normal job search websites is that employers never get back to you,” Beauchamp said.

In director of Career Services Martin Shibata’s opinion, the benefits of CollegeFeed extend beyond its inside connections.

“What CollegeFeed also does is take it a step fur-

ther,” Shibata said. “For example, everyone wants to work for Google. However, it’s very competitive.

If you tell CollegeFeed you want to work for Google, it will suggest five other similar companies that you may not have been aware of.”

This recommendation feature will sound familiar to those who use Netflix, which also uses preferences to create relevant suggestions. Except instead of finding a new TV show, students can find a new job.

“Everything about the site is very catered to you,” CollegeFeed founder and CEO Sanjeev Agrawal said. “We don’t expect you to have a lot of experience. We allow you to take what we know you can actually bring — like a term paper or class project. We don’t expect you to have five years of experience in the industry, which would be silly.”

Communications sophomore Luke McDade is featured on CollegeFeed’s Hall of Fame, which spotlights successful profiles. His page displays a video from his Paramount Pictures internship, his work experience, descriptions of the top classes he’s taken at Cal Poly and why he chose them.

But the system has its flaws. To use CollegeFeed, students must fit a relatively narrow set of criteria.

“My concern is that the focus is on technologybased companies — business, engineering,” Shibata said. “But those companies already come to Cal Poly.

We’re hoping that as CollegeFeed begins to develop, it will create a broad base of

According to Agrawal, while it’s true there are more jobs in the technical fields, CollegeFeed recognizes the need to include other types of careers.

“Our mission is to connect every possible student we can with companies that are looking for people like them,” Agrawal said. “Liberal arts majors are actually

in pretty high demand with technology companies. There are pure liberal arts jobs as well, and we’re working with schools to identify them.”

The site is primarily meant for those ready to begin their careers, making it less targeted towards underclassmen. While freshmen, sophomores and juniors can still apply, they will not be presented to any poten-

tial employers. However, Shibata still encourages underclassmen to apply.

“There are some internships on the site, and you can also use it as a networking tool,” he said.

According to CollegeFeed’s website, 31 percent of applicants are accepted into the program. Agrawal urges students to increase their chances by making their profile like

a story and proving their skills with the work sample section.

Shibata is confident that CollegeFeed will become a valuable resource for Cal Poly students.

“We’re trying to create other types of resources,” Shibata said. “The job search process is not just one thing. You have to get outside the box— you can’t just use MustangJOBS.”

Career fair heavy on technical employers Brandon O’Rourke Special to Mustang News Nearly 200 companies descended on the Recreation Center earlier this year for networking and interviews with Cal Poly students. For many of them, the Fall Career Fair was highly appreciated. For others, however, it was hardly useful.

Absent from the floor were non-technical jobs in arts, humanities and science, relevant to the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and the College of Science and Math (COSAM). Overwhelmingly represented at the fairs, though, were the engineering, agriculture, architecture and business sectors.

This disparity is often perceived by students as prejudice or even favoritism on the part of Cal Poly Career Services.

“In my experience, there is absolutely a bias,” said mechanical engineering sophomore Julia Hall, who already has three internship offers for this coming summer. “Many of my roommates and peers have not been entirely satisfied with the university’s professional development offerings.”

Art and design sophomore Sarah Ching found at the most recent fair that there was “maybe one thing that I could have possibly been able to take part in. That was kind of a bummer since I felt like there was nothing for me.”

Career Services does not dispute there is a problem, and has been working to address it for years.

“I feel like our career fairs have a pretty predictable demographic to them, and there are lots of reasons why that’s true,” Charlotte Rinaldi, a counselor in Career Services who has represented CLA for thirteen years, said. “It’s not something that we get to talk about a lot, but it’s definitely frustrating.”

A difficult situation Some colleges at Cal Poly have a more prestigious reputation.

“Cal Poly historically is the school of choice for engineering, architecture, business [and agriculture],” Rinaldi said.

That attracts recruiters.

Another factor is the companies that are recruiting.

Large companies that hire hundreds of employees every year and local companies are the two employers that normally recruit at a university, Rinaldi said.

These large companies favor technical industries because the relevant positions are clear-cut and objective, and they come in bulk. This

makes a trip to San Luis Obispo very lucrative for companies such as Boeing or Microsoft, who typically continue dialogue with many students for several positions, Rinaldi said.

Non-technical industries appealing to liberal arts students typically hire for a single, open position as it becomes available. Instead of searching for employees, job candidates come to them, which makes a journey to San Luis Obispo further out of the way.

The Graduate Status Report, compiled annually

by Career Services, shows CLA graduates working for many different companies, while engineering companies tend to have hired multiple graduates.

“When recruiters come (to fairs), say from Google, we know that they have a ton of positions liberal arts students could fill,” Rinaldi said.

“The catch is their recruiters are field-focused. They’ll send technical recruiters — they won’t send HR generalists. It drives us crazy.”

Working against the current Career Services has been fighting to bring more diverse job opportunities, but it’s a difficult task.

“We have to get creative,” said Zoe Sullivan, a graduate intern for Career Services.

In the past, Career Services attempted to design a government and education job fair for CLA students, organized by Rinaldi and an intern dedicated to the project. Despite the effort, a small number of employers — approximately 30 — were met by an even smaller number of students.

It was disheartening, Rinaldi said.

Since then, Career Services is approaching the problem differently. They are working to increase opportunities within its own systems, which include MustangJOBS, career fairs, networking events and employer visits.

A job developer was hired this year, and is responsible for creating opportunities in the arts, humanities and sciences.

Because of budgetary limitations, Career Services’ recruiting staff can barely handle the recruiters already searching for Cal Poly students, Rinaldi said, and the job developer is directly addressing this problem.

The position was made possible by funds from the Student Success Fee and from money Career Services raised on its own.

driving force behind their new effort, acknowledged the need for funding in tackling the problem, he said.

“We are committed to doing something better for CLA and COSAM,” he said.

“If you want to tell Student Success Fee money to give us more, we’ll take more.”

Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong is fully invested in helping students in non-technical majors, Rinaldi said.

“I’ve been at Cal Poly for 17 years, and this is the most interested in career success our administration has been,” Rinaldi said.

The state’s squeezing of public education budgets, however, has restricted the administration’s ability to effectively fund Career Services, she added.

A two-sided problem While Career Services and the administration work on top-down strategies for improving career opportunities for CLA and COSAM, students have other bottom-up avenues for success.

These routes are often under-used by students.

Career Services has numerous methods of advertising itself, particularly to freshmen, but many students don’t realize what they have to offer.

“It kills us to hear a senior student say they didn’t know they had a career

counselor,” Rinaldi said. “I don’t know how that’s possible, but they really don’t.”

That was evident at the government and education job fair.

“Students didn’t come,” Rinaldi said. “We had eight social science students.”

Career Services offers an array of services to students who are willing to engage, including MustangJOBS, employer panels, résumé building workshops and interview tips.

All these services can be found on the Career Services’ website.

Rinaldi recommends CLA and COSAM students struggling with job-hunting to grow their networks and “be really intentional about the kind of position or role (they) want to play ... and get into what (they) really want to do.”

The major truth: Cal Poly’s change of major policy Suha Saya @suhasaya It was the policy she had a problem with, not the people.

Cal Poly wine and viticulture freshman Kinsie Prokopakis withdrew from her classes and unregistered from University Housing when worry struck her about switching her major to engineering.

“I was worried that my GPA would go down so drastically trying to get into engineering classes here that I wouldn’t get into any colleges for engineering,” she said. “I didn’t want this to be a waste of time.”

But after serious consideration, she decided to take the risk anyway.

“For one, I got a 4.0 my first quarter,” Prokopakis said. “Engineering here is such a good opportunity, and some college will accept me for engineering no matter what.”

Others — with grade point averages plummeting — aren’t so lucky.

But Shannon Stephens, director of Mustang Success Center, said grades aren’t the entirety of evaluation when changing majors.

“Students need to learn to navigate the system,” he said. “And that doesn’t mean cheating the system — that’s finding the right people on campus to help you.

“If your grades aren’t good because you’re in a major that you don’t like and don’t excel in, you have to approach that conversation tactically,” Stephens added.

Stephens stressed the impact of in-person conversations with advisers rather than email conversations.

Not your typical “frat” star Despite an overriding notion of heteronormativity in greek life, according to Shane L. Windmeyer, co-editor of Out on Fraternity Row, a book about gay men in fraternities, gay men are becoming more accepted in liberal regions like California.

“In the last decade, we’re seeing more and more men coming out to their brothers, and this has a really positive impact,” he said.

“But there’s still a lot of work to be done because the real challenge is with more effeminate men.”

With the popularization of websites like Total Frat Move, being in a fraternity is often linked to excessive womanizing. The more a man participates in heterosexual college hookup culture, the closer he comes to epitomizing “frat” life and masculinity.

The gay or bisexual man doesn’t quite fit in.

And so, the reaction to Earl is not what most would

As for time, Stephens admitted that it can be a lengthy process. But he indicated it doesn’t have to be that way for every student.

“This process is called an Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA) for a reason,” he said. “It’s personalized according to the students’ needs and what college they want to switch into.”

Because each college has its own culture, each major is impacted to different levels, Stephens said.

“If a major is very impacted, the professor to faculty ratio is maxed out,” he said. “So they don’t have as much room in that major as others.”

But departments in the colleges are telling students which classes they’d like them to take, and are showing them how to be successful in that particular major, he said.

“That’s up to the departments to find out how much space there is, based on how much availability they have coming in and going out,” Stephens said.

Cem Sunata, university registrar, stressed the dynamic nature of the process.

“Each department is trying to keep their capacities somewhat leveled,” Sunata said. “If departments admit everyone, they’re going to make it a real disservice to students that are admitted because they can’t serve them well ... students won’t find major classes that they want to get admitted in, and then they’ll start complaining that they can’t get expect from a fraternity — with date parties, exchanges and overnight trips, there is, undeniably, an assumption of heterosexuality.

But an estimated 10 percent of fraternity members nationwide don’t identify as straight, said Windmeyer.

And he thinks that statistic is understated.

“One of the best ways to combat homophobia is to have the presence of out, gay men in fraternities willing to educate, willing to step up, stand up and be visible,” he said.

At the end of a chapter meeting, Clarke got up and set the record straight — or not.

“It was one of those heat of the moment things where you just say exactly what you need to say,” Clarke said. “I remember toward the end of it being like, ‘I want your support, and I’d rather have fifty guys behind me,’ and then being

Though some impacted majors might ask students to maintain a certain GPA before switching, Stephens said it’s not a dead end.

That doesn’t mean there’s not another major you can use to get to the endpoint you want, he said.

“Folks like myself or other advisors on campus can talk to students about that and take away the anxiety of ‘I can’t get the job I want if I’m not in this major,’” he said. “The reality is that’s not always true.”

If students don’t meet the terms of their ICMA at the end of the process, they go back to their original major, he said.

But to Stephens, this shouldn’t be a big problem as long as students talk to the right advisors.

“Classes can be taken to go towards both degrees at the same time,” he said. like, ‘Oh wait, that doesn’t sound very good,’ and everybody started laughing.”

Clarke had at least eight brothers come up to him after the meeting and tell him they were proud of his courage.

“Even to this day, it’s been two years of support,” he said.

Clarke is in a long-term relationship and has taken his boyfriend to his fraternity’s formal dances, date parties and a fraternity overnight in Las Vegas, where they shared the room with a heterosexual couple.

“I got paired with somebody in my pledge class who was one of the more, if not the most, conservative people in my fraternity,” Clarke said. “But it was a really good thing, because I was talking to him afterwards, and he said it really changed his outlook.”

Gay, not girly Still, Clarke concedes, he spent a lot of time in heteronormative culture. He played offensive tackle on his high school football team, and at 6’3 and 215 pounds, it’s hard to deny his masculinity.

That could be why he didn’t face much negativity, Windmeyer’s research suggests.

“It’s less about orientation and more about conforming to a traditional masculine

“Students are required to declare a major upon entry; we do this in case a student might want to circumvent the system just for the sake of getting into Cal Poly,” he said.

That’s also why students can’t change majors the first quarter of their freshman year, he said.

Sunata did, however, recognize the problems that come with having impacted majors.

“I can see the challenge of getting into engineering,” Sunata said. “It’s hard for students to go through meeting certain conditions in the change of major policy if there are no spots in the major itself.”

Stephens agreed the process can get complicated because departments and colleges are left to administer the policy to some degree.

“It’s a little bit muddy; we

have a university policy that seems relatively clear,” he said.

“But some colleges and departments will differ in how they apply the university policy.”

Prokopakis, who looked to transfer into engineering, said she’s found other colleges won’t let students declare a major until they have a certain standing or certain GPA. “My sister who goes to (University of California) Santa Cruz couldn’t declare a major in bioengineering until her junior year — which, in my opinion, is good, because people can try stuff out,” she said. “I understand the argument that if people have time, to try things out it may take them longer to graduate, but at the same time it’s going to take me five to six years to graduate because of this change-of-major issue.”

Miller said there are downsides to other schools’ changeof-major systems.

“Once you get there and you take all those classes, what happens if you still can’t get into the major when it’s time to declare?

It’s not a perfect world,” she said. “The process is complex — that’s just how it is.”

Miller, however, said the advising community is looking into creating a starting point for everyone.

“We’re proposing that all students would start with a change of major workshop, and then we’ll move forward to getting students to where they want to go,” she said. “We understand that we expect 17-year-olds to know what they’re going to do with the rest of their lives. But we want to make sure they’re not jumping ship either.”

“It’s surprising that, in 2014, we know of less than a dozen fraternities that have sexual orientation in their non-discrimination policy. We still need to do better.”

Theta Chi alumni Jason Bertels, for instance, said he presented himself as traditionally masculine in the presence of his fraternity brothers because he knew, “that was a way to access their respect.”

Though Bertels said being openly gay “increased the social divide” between him and some of his fraternity brothers, he picked Theta Chi because, overall, he felt welcomed.

“I remember the first time I brought a guy to a party,” Bertels said. “It was a heaven and hell party, and I walked in with this dude I was dating at the time, and our president approached me, pulled me aside and said, ‘I’m so glad you’re comfortable and willing to bring a guy.’ And I said, ‘When I joined this chapter, that’s what I was looking for: someplace that I felt comfortable.’”

Joined this chapter Would the reactions have been as positive in another house?

Alpha Epsilon Pi alumnus Austin McBrady isn’t so sure.

“It’s accepted, but it’s obviously accepted more in the, — how would you say this — well-rounded fraternities and less in the more stereotypical fraternities,” he said.

So for him, the choice was simple.

“How could I trust people as my brothers if they don’t accept me as me?” he asked.

“If I had ever felt stigmatized or unwanted because of who I am, I wouldn’t have rushed or stayed in (Alpha Epsilon Pi).”

The gay fraternity When McBrady rushed, Delta Lambda Phi, a nationally recognized gay-friendly fraternity, also existed at Cal Poly.

But Delta Lambda Phi dwindled from approximately 23 members in its heyday down to two or three at its low point, until the chapter became defunct, said Lanz Nalagan, Delta Lambda Phi’s president from 2009-2010.

Nalagan joined Delta Lambda Phi because it centered around giving gay, bisexual and progressive men a house on campus, he said.

“At the time, I was interested in joining greek life, but I was nervous to pledge a traditional fraternity because I was certainly not their typical pledge material,” he said. “I hate to be

frank, but I’m quite the effeminate man.”

Nalagan said he thinks the reason that Delta Lambda Phi dissipated only a few years after its inception at Cal Poly was because “there was no longer a need.”

“More and more openly gay men were joining traditional fraternities, and DLP was not in demand, and it sucks, but it’s almost a good thing,” he said, “I know my fraternity will probably hate me for saying this, but the mere fact that recruitment became so hard after I left shows that gay men could join traditional fraternities and be welcomed for their diversity. As the years progressed, so did greek life.”

One step at a time Though progress has been made, there is work still to be done, according to Windmeyer.

“It’s surprising that, in 2014, we know of less than a dozen fraternities that have sexual orientation in their non-discrimination policy,” he said. “We still need to do better.”

That’s why Earl is applying for law school with a focus on LGBT law.

“I put the story (of my coming out) in my law school applications,” Earl said. “But no matter what you call it, if you’re gay, bisexual, pansexual, omni-sexual, any category of sexuality that’s really not as prominent, there are still struggles for you out there in and beyond the greek system.”

Kassi Luja As the sun peeks through the glass storefront, customers filter into the Anthropologieesque cafe for their morning dose of caffeine. Coffee perfumes the air as guests are greeted with cheery smiles and bubbly personalities. Groups of 20-somethings percolate the corners and chat amongst themselves, escaping the 7 a.m. chill.

But even before the sun is up and the cafe begins to populate, baristas are behind the counter prepping for the day’s grind.

Downtown San Luis Obispo welcomed a new coffee shop this past week when Scout Coffee Co. opened its doors at 1130 Garden St. Though the cafe is new to town, it’s been a vision in the works for approximately 10 years.

The two faces behind the project have a history even longer than that. Owners Jon and Sara Peterson have been together for 15 years, married for nine and have a 22-month-old daughter named Lilly. Now, they have their very own coffee shop on the Central Coast as well.

“My wife and I, for a long time, talked about doing this, and even before we knew much about the coffee industry, we wanted to do it,” Jon said.

The Petersons were living in Santa Cruz (having worked for Verve Coffee Roasters) when they found the perfect location for Scout on one of their many trips to San Luis Obispo.

“We walked around the corner at Marsh (Street) and saw a ‘For Lease’ sign … That was it,” Jon said. “Sara immediately was like, ‘That’s our spot.’”

The next day, Sara called the landlord and everything started falling into place. The Petersons moved to town this past July, and signed the lease for Scout’s future location the next month.

“It was kind of, like, ‘fingers crossed’ that everything was going to work out,” Sara said.

Though the Petersons aren’t originally from San Luis Obispo, they do have connections in the area. Not only do they

have friends in town, Jon’s parents lived here before he was born.

Now, San Luis Obispo and Garden Street have come to be home for the little family. Lilly, in particular, is enjoying the coffee shop life.

“She hangs out here with us all the time,” Sara said. “I think it’s going to be a fun place for her to grow up.”

Balancing raising a toddler and managing a new coffee shop might seem daunting, but Jon is indifferent.

“We love to work,” Jon said.

“We love interacting with the community. Our little girl really loves it here. She runs around … She actually sweeps.

We didn’t teach her that; she just does it. Our work is also our life. I wake up and I’m excited to go to work.”

The cafe’s light, jovial atmosphere paired with its outdoorsy design sets the shop apart from others in San Luis Obispo.

The natural decor is complete with exposed brick walls, wooden stumps, hanging terrariums and reclaimed wood. The bar top itself was made from a 100-yearold tree that fell on South Higuera Street.

“Some of our design elements are kind of vintage-camp inspired,” Jon said.

But nature’s fixture isn’t just apparent in the cafe’s decor — it’s also slightly tied to the shop’s name.

“We think of positive, outdoorsy, cool, vintage design … all of those things are what we think of when we think of Scout,” Jon said. “Something else we’ve kind of talked about after the fact is more of like, ‘We are ‘scouting’ out flavors and trying to find the best coffees that are out there.’”

Scout Coffee Co. serves Verve coffee and uses Chemex as well as Hario V60 for its pour over coffee.

The Petersons aim to source all of their ingredients locally, and they work directly with farms.

“We want to buy the best quality coffee,” Jon said.

“We also want to provide a sustainable living wage for people. We don’t believe in buying cheap coffee and selling it at $3 and $4 a cup like a lot of people do, so on some things, our prices are a little bit higher, but we pay significantly more for all of our ingredients across the board than anyone else does.

We think it’s a nice luxury in life. It’s one of the few things where you can buy the best that there is for less than $5.”

Along with coffee, Scout also serves milkshakes made with McConnell’s ice cream from Santa Barbara and seasonal sodas. Both of these items will change depending on the time of the year.

“Our coffees change seasonally as well,” Sara said.

“It’ll be fun to kind of introduce that concept to customers because coffee is a fruit, so our coffee menu will be changing just like everything else will.”

On the bakery front, everything the shop serves is baked in-house, including morning buns, croissants, sunshine rolls and the Scout cookie, which Jon said has been a hit.

Though the shop has only been open for a week, it’s already seen its share of business. Customer Andrew Garabedian, who built a sign for the store front, enjoyed a cup of coffee with friends at the new locale.

San Luis Obispo needed a coffee shop like Scout, he said.

Not only is the community embracing the new business in town, but the Petersons are enjoying the warm welcome.

“It’s very rewarding to see people enjoying the space,” Sara said. “It’s a real treat to get to see people enjoying the cookies that I baked and drinks that were handcrafted.”

The Petersons plan to hold a grand opening event on Feb. 1, similar to its Friends & Family night on Jan. 19.

Scout Coffee Co. is open every day from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and has free Wi-Fi.

Learn by working out of the classroom Katherine Benedict @katjben Mechanical engineering junior John Culliton and industrial engineering junior Alex Meyer both took fall quarter off to pursue jobs that benefitted their education outside the classroom.

Culliton worked for Polaris Industries, North America’s largest off-road vehicle manufacturer based in Medina, Minn. Culliton’s childhood in Minnesota and love of cars fueled his desire to work for Polaris.

“I heard about it by growing up in the area,” Culliton said.

“I’ve always kind of been passionate about cars and vehicles and off-road vehicles. Then I also knew someone who was in the company; I wouldn’t call it very extreme networking, but it was just kind of a face that I knew, which was nice.”

Culliton’s co-op lasted from June to December.

The lengthened experience was one of the aspects that made the co-op so worthwhile, he said.

“What I really liked about it is standard training for an engineering job — or any job, really — is two to three months,” Culliton said. “So if you’re doing a three-month internship in the summer, you only really get knee-deep in it because they can’t really fully train you and then really put you to work.”

Following the training stages, Culliton was given responsibilities and duties that fit his interests and knowledge.

“I was a power train development engineer,” he said. “So what I did basically was test and tune engines, though I

did some emissions work and various development. Basically, I would go ride vehicles and hook my computer up to them. I worked on that computer and tuning it.”

Culliton credits much of his knowledge and skill to his experience in Cal Poly’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). SAE builds three different cars throughout the year: gas, electric and off-road.

“The experience I got through that really did set me up for the job I had,” Culliton said. “We really built race cars with our bare hands at Cal Poly, which is fun and was a great experience. That combined with some of the classes I have taken made me as qualified as I could have been finishing up my second year in college.”

Culliton was also put in charge of certain aspects of the engine and then held frequent meetings in which he would present and share data to groups of 15 to 20 professional engineers. While he said this was one of the hardest aspects of his job, he also said it was one of the more rewarding.

All of the technical work and experience intensified his interest in cars and confirmed his love for driving; he spent much of his time driving on the more than 700 acres of Polaris property.

“The riding was absolutely my favorite part; I got to do what approached hundreds of hours of riding,” Culliton said.

“They bought me a bunch of riding gear. They paid for me to get my motorcycle license.

They put me through about 20 hours of off-road and snowmobile classes.”

Meyer also spent this past fall quarter away from Cal Poly.

Meyer worked at the “happiest place on Earth” — Disneyland — in its industrial engineering department.

“It’s pretty cool because Dis-

ney is one of the few companies that actually has an industrial engineering department,” Meyer said. “So basically what we do is we focus on efficiencies within different processes.

I personally supported food and beverage.”

Disney offers two forms of internships: collegiate and professional. Most students

receive collegiate internships, but Meyer was able to go straight into a professional internship.

Meyer spent his days doing various tests and tasks, from working behind the scenes and gathering data to strolling around the park answering questions or receiving complaints.

“I guess the hardest part would be when someone comes up to you with a complaint in the park and you don’t know what to do,” Meyer said. “But I guess I learned a lot with how to have great customer service.”

Along with gaining a good feel for customer service, Meyer was able to work on projects that used his skills to collect and analyze statistical data, such as his work with opening a new Starbucks in the park.

“There’s a Starbucks that opened up on Main Street while I was there on Sept. 26, and my internship started Sep. 10, so I got to be part of the opening team and then I got to help them with their big operational assessment two months later,” Meyer said.

Meyer was thrilled to be a part of this project and work with two of the largest companies in the world: Disney and Starbucks.

Meyer first found the job opportunity through Mus-

tangJOBS as well as in an email from the industrial engineering department. Meyer applied and was interviewed on campus after a couple of days. After he started, Meyer felt well prepared for the tasks he was given.

“I never felt like I didn’t know what I was doing,” Meyer said. “Everyone is super welcoming and you just have to know it’s OK to ask questions and they don’t expect you to know everything.”

Meyer plans to go back to Disney this summer to work again.

Both Culliton and Meyer believe their work experience has helped solidify their career desires.

Additionally, both said putting yourself out there and going for opportunities is the best action to take when thinking about getting an internship or job.

“Get your hands dirty,” Culliton said. “There is a lot of channels here that can lead you to a successful career.”

Likewise, Meyer believes in stepping out and braving the risk.

“Honestly, just apply, even if you think there is no way, because looking back, I still cannot even believe that whole quarter that I was there even happened,” Meyer said.

Seinfeld gives Central Coast belated festivus Jefferson P. Nolan @jefferson_nolan It seemed that just as soon as he had arrived, he was gone.

Jerry Seinfeld ran to center stage in the Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center (PAC) this past Thursday night in front of a full house.

“What a beautiful experience this is for you,” Seinfeld said in his opening monologue. “Look at the accomplishment you have made for yourselves. That you have gotten out for the evening.

That was effort. That was work. That was planning.”

According to Forbes magazine, the master of observational comedy is marked as the top-grossing comedian in the world. He’s earned $3 billion in syndication royalties for the sitcom “Seinfeld” and approximately $27 million doing stand-up just in the past 12 months.

Ron Regier, managing director of the PAC, hailed the arrival of the old-school comedian to San Luis Obispo.

“This is probably one of the biggest names in entertainment to come to the Performing Arts Center,” Regier said.

“And I’ve been here since it opened in 1996. It’s not just exciting for us. It’s also exciting for the campus and community to have artists like this come to town.”

And Thursday night, the

crowd was reminded of what they had been missing since the last episode of “Seinfeld” aired on May 14, 1998.

Though the renowned comedian took stage on a college campus, his humor catered to his older audience. Amidst a world of blue-humor, the 59-year-old remained true to his clean-cut joke-telling.

Brandishing his arms with his classic gesticulations, he regaled tales of marriage, his plan to open a coffee establishment entitled “Beat It,” and the constant concern of becoming “dehydrated.”

“Wouldn’t I get thirsty first?

No!” Seinfeld exclaimed. “According to the fitness people, if you’re thirsty, you’re too late!”

The PAC has played host to a prestigious list of comedians in recent years, including Craig Ferguson, Jay Leno, Bill Cosby and now, Jerry Seinfeld.

However, Seinfeld’s appearance on the Central Coast came and went as a mystery.

“It’s intriguing because they called us,” Regier said. “Some artists seek us out because of the acoustics, the look of the hall or because it’s on their route and they have another gig in the area. But in this instance, I don’t think that’s the case.”

The San Luis Obispo show was Seinfeld’s lone California stop. The day after his performance, Seinfeld scheduled a gig in Portland, Ore. before his next stop in Hollywood, Fla. on Jan. 31.

For journalism sophomore Annabel Snow and liberal studies sophomore Erin Springer, who attended the show together, a glimpse of Seinfeld was worth the entry cost on Thursday night.

“We grew up watching ‘Seinfeld’ with our families, and we just got so excited when we heard he was going to perform here,” Snow said.

Snow and Springer admitted the jokes were directed at an older audience despite the show’s location on a college campus. Nevertheless, they found Seinfeld’s humor as relatable as ever.

“It’s smart humor,” Snow said. “Not everyone likes that kind of humor, but some of the jokes, we were both crying, we were laughing so hard.

Some of them we just kind of looked at each other like, ‘I don’t really know.’”

“It’s still funny, though,” Springer said. “Either way, you can definitely see the humor in it.”

Like most performers, Seinfeld was off the stage and in his chauffeured SUV before the final applause had subsided.

The world’s wealthiest comedian had places to go and jokes to tell, but his appearance in San Luis Obispo marked the best belated Festivus gift the Central Coast could have asked for.

Men’s hoops blows late lead Mustang News Staff Report @CPMustangSports The Cal Poly men’s basketball team surrendered a 10-0 run to close the game as the Mustangs lost 61-58 on the road to UC Riverside on Saturday night.

Cal Poly (8-11, 4-2 Big West) led 58-51 with 3:39 left in the contest, but couldn’t score the rest of the way to open up the Highlanders’ comeback opportunity.

Senior guard Jamal Johnson's jumper with six seconds left didn't fall. Junior guard Maliik Love fouled on the ensuing rebound, giving UC Riverside a chance to seal the game with two free throws, which the Highlanders' Sam Finley knocked down to secure the final scoreline.

Sophomore wing David Nwaba finished with a gamehigh 17 points, while senior forward Chris Eversley chipped in with 13.

The Mustangs shot 38.6 percent from the field, including 3 of 17 from 3-point range. UC Riverside (7-13, 2-4) shot 42.5 percent and hit 5 of 11 shots from downtown.

Senior guard Kyle Odister, who leads the team with 38 3-pointers, did not play due to a foot injury suffered this past week.

The Mustangs return home for matchups with UC Davis on Thursday and UC Irvine on Saturday. The game against the Anteaters will be televised live on ESPNU. Stephan Teodosescu contributed to this report.

Dreaming of the American dream Eric Stubben is a mechanical engineering sophomore and Mustang News conservative columnist. These views do not necessarily reflect the opinion or editorial coverage of Mustang News.

His dad was a garbage man, his mom a mentor to inner city disabled children. He went to one of the worst high schools in California and “made it out.” If his 4.1 high school GPA wasn’t good enough, his 3.9 from Stanford was. Now he’s making six figures in the job of his dreams – one few thought he’d excel at.

Of course I’m talking about Richard Sherman.

Isn’t everyone?

Beyond all of the trash talking, the infamous interview, and the “best in the game” talk lies a story much bigger than football. Richard Sherman epitomizes the American dream. The same American dream that has been said to have died long ago. The same American dream that is kept alive today despite all the media talk and government skepticism. But also, the same American dream that direly needs support to stay relevant.

A report released last week by five top economists, called the “Equality of Opportunity Project,” found that social mobility hasn’t actually decreased at all since 1970. In fact, for the most part, it has stayed steady.

Now what exactly is social mobility?

Social mobility is the movement between social and economic classes, measured by the difference in income percentile between adults that were born into the poorest

families and adults that were born into the richest families.

Today that value sits around 30 percent. In other words, a child born into the lowest economic class will grow up to have a 30 percent lower income than the income of an adult who was born into the richest economic class.

At first glance, the social mobility income gap seems like a high number: 30 percent! But put it into perspective … Two children, born into families with between an 80 percent to 100 percent income gap, could finish life only 30 percent apart. The poor child makes up anywhere between 50 percent to 70 percent of the income gap, on average. America still is the best place for the poor, the outsiders and the disadvantaged to have a real chance at success. At the very least, everybody has a chance to increase the quality of life for themselves and their children.

The report also found a very consistent economic makeup in terms of economic class.

While the income gap has grown larger between the top and bottom groups, the middle class has naturally grown as well. Because of the larger middle class, the ability for lower-class citizens to jump up to the middle class has not been compromised. Ultimately, the inequality gap doesn’t affect mobility from one economic class to another.

Politically, the “Equality of Opportunity Project” doesn’t necessarily favor one side of the aisle over the other. It does, however, highlight the ineffectiveness of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or the food stamp pro-

gram. The report claims the benefits of food stamps are largely negated by the lack of jobs for low-income earners.

Outsourced factory jobs, part-time work, and outdated jobs run rampant in our current economy. Bundled up with nationally-rising minimum wages and higher corporate health care costs, food stamps are temporarily bandaging the American dream, holding its existence together for now.

What will happen when we finally face our budget deficit crisis head-to-head? When the bandage falls off, what will be the safety net for the American dream?

This is where Richard Sherman’s story comes back into play. His parents raised him on the principles of education and hard work. Education came first; everything else followed. It’s clear these principles had a monumental effect on his success.

What the American dream needs is not a monetary stimulant, but a social adjustment.

The values of young children should be rooted in education, hard work and determination.

Parents need to get back to having children within wedlock and raising them correctly. Couples who have children out of wedlock are far less likely to stay together and raise those children than married couples. Children raised by two parents have nearly twice the odds of going to college as children raised by just one.

@SavannahSperry1 Amidst a flurry of recruiters and professionally dressed Cal Poly students, the task of networking and seeking employment at the upcoming Winter Career Fair is considerably daunting.

Thankfully, career counselors Charlotte Rinaldi and Seth Igarta have offered insight, answering frequently asked questions about ways to be successful at the Career Fair on Jan. 29 and 30, as well as advice for professional life beyond college.

Mustang News (MN): How should students prepare for the Career Fair?

Career Services (CS): The first thing they need to do is make a plan. They need to know who is coming to the Career Fair — look and see who is coming on what days. They need to look at who is recruiting and what they’re recruiting for, and find those recruiters who are recruiting positions that they’re interested in. They need to try to prioritize who they want to see. Our general networking sessions start at 9:30 a.m. and they go until 1:30 p.m. for students to meet with as many employers as they can. Obviously students have classes, so they need to plan around their schedules.

They need to tailor their job search documents to specific employers, especially if they’re recruiting for a position.

MN: What assistance does Career Services offer in helping students prepare for the Career Fair?

CS: We do several workshops. Every career fair, we do what we call “Making the Most of the Career Fair.” We

do a résumé clinic, and we do networking and interviewing workshops to help students prepare for the Career Fair.

MN: How can students find out which companies will be at the Career Fair?

CS: A list is posted on MustangJOBS, which students can access through their My Cal Poly Portal. On MustangJOBS, there are postings specifically for the career fair, so they can look and see who is posting positions.

MN: How should students approach employers at the career fair?

CS: Students should make sure that they have a strong handshake, give good body language, make eye contact, present employers with a résumé and launch into a tailored pitch.

MN: What is a pitch and what goes into it?

CS: We work with students to develop their pitch — the information about themselves that they want to share with employers so that they can make a good impression.

They’ll want to talk about who they are, their major, if they have a minor or concentration, what year they are, some of their projects and some of their work experience, how they are involved on campus, what their interests are … It’s all the things that are generally on a résumé. They’ll also want to discuss what research they’ve done on the employer, which is important because the employer wants to know that they’ve done some research.

They need to have an engaging conversation with the recruiter and give them their résumé. They really have to

be in the moment with the recruiter because at the end of the day, they’ve been standing there for several hours, asking the same question and hearing the same response.

You need to adapt and adjust and really have a positive conversation.

MN: How should students dress for this event?

CS: It’s important to know and research what your employers expect, because some employers will expect students to be very professionally dressed, while others — like one of our prestigious recruiters, Apple Inc. — actually prefer students to look how we call ‘snappy casual,’ where they’re wearing a collared shirt and khakis instead of a suit and tie. Other companies are very much expecting students to be well dressed and very professional in suits and skirts.

MN: How do you find out which employers expect which attire?

CS: You need to do a little research. You want to look at a company’s website. If you know of information sessions or networking sessions that have happened across campus with those companies, you’ll want to go to those. You want to talk to previous students who have been interns or try and connect with alumni.

MN: Should students tailor different versions of their résumé for specific employers?

CS: You really need to look at the job description, and your résumé needs to be fitting the job description. There are basics to tailoring a résumé for every position. Oftentimes it entails tailoring the objective

We’ve become a society desperately wanting money without craving success. That’s a dangerous combination.

Trying in school and getting a high school diploma isn’t enough anymore. For the American dream to live on, students need to focus on college and beyond. Professional jobs pay more, are more secure and much easier to attain with a college diploma than are other, high-school-diplomaonly jobs. Here at Cal Poly, we push through grueling weeks of late nights, busy work and midterms knowing that when we reach the end of our four (maybe five, but hopefully not six) years of college, we’ll be

well on our way to reaching our dream.

As a country, our focus needs to shift away from income equality to increasing chances of social mobility.

Higher taxes and increased welfare are just poor excuses for turning our backs on cultural change. Cultural change is not easy. In fact, it can get downright nasty.

Everyone has the right to live out the American dream, but everyone has to choose whether or not they want to exercise that right.

What we can do is set a cultural base to provide the best foundation possible for dreams to develop.

MN: Do students need a cover letter at the Career Fair?

CS: They typically tend not to, but that’s where looking at MustangJOBS is really helpful. If you can apply for a position before you go to the career fair, then you can tell the recruiter you’ve submitted your résumé and cover letter online and you can hand them a hard copy version. However, at the career fair, most recruiters don’t have time to look at a cover letter.

CS: We suggest to really focus their search on networking and to meet with their career counselor to make a plan that’s targeted towards the niche in the industry that they want to get into. This way, they can be intentional about reaching out to specific alums and employers and create their materials to be focused in a certain direction — that’s usually how they’ll find the kind of job they really want.

MN: Should students get contact information from recruiters?

MN: What other advice can you offer students on their quest for jobs?

CS: Whenever students network with a potential employer, one of the goals should be to get contact information, a business card or an email address, something they can use to follow up.

CS: We find that a lot of our recruiters are using LinkedIn. It’s really important for students to develop a LinkedIn profile and make sure that it is branding them the way they want to be branded and begin using it to build connections to the work that they want to do.

MN: When should students follow up after applying for a position?

CS: After meeting with a recruiter the day of the Career Fair, a good time to follow up is as early as that afternoon or the next day or early the

Swimming and diving sweeps final home meet Rafael Salinas @CPMustangSports In the final home meet of the year, the Cal Poly swimming and diving teams made sure they left winners. Both the men’s and women’s teams were in top form as the Mustangs swept a dual meet against UC Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Aquatic Center.

The men's and women’s squads outscored the Banana Slugs 166-94 and 20174, respectively.

“Overall, we swam well, we just need to be sharper,” head coach Tom Milich said of his teams' performance.

Cal Poly won 30 of 32 total events. Among the highlights was the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay team which won by 18 seconds over its closest competitor. The team was made up of seniors Jill Jones, Kelsey Engel, Rachel Cleak and Danielle Wong.

In the men's 500-yard freestyle, senior Adrian Brynnel placed first with a time of 4:43.02. Brynnel also served as the anchor for the 400-yard freestyle relay team which placed first in that event.

On the diving side, senior Sami McIntyre won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Freshman Paul

The Mustangs now look ahead to a matchup at UC Santa Barbara in the BlueGreen Rivalry. If Saturday's meet is any indication of their present form, they should come out on top, according to freshman swimmer Daniella Orlandi.

“We’re really focused,” Orlandi said. “We’ve been putting our hearts and souls into it, so we should see some really good results.”

Orlandi placed first in the women’s 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, and the 200-yard medley relay.

Sophomore standout Sonny Fierro attributes Cal Poly's success to their practice.

“Lots of work on techniques like underwaters and kicking, which is a strong suit for a lot of us and it’s a big part of swimming,” Fierro said. “We work on the little things too, like the stroke technique and the drills.”

Fierro is currently ninth overall in the Pac-12 conference in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth overall in both the 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyle events.

He won the men's 200-yard butterfly Saturday.

Next weekend, Fierro is looking at swimming the 1000-yard or mile event, the

500 free and the 200 free.

“I’ll stick to my best freestyle events," he said.

Milich also acknowledged his seniors' performances. At the last home meet of their Cal Poly careers, there was a ceremony to honor the seniors.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Maffris is currently 10th overall in the 200-yard backstroke. Cleak is seventh in the 100-yard butterfly and third overall in the 200-yard butterfly.

One of the few bright spots for UC Riverside was Simone DeCoude, who led the Highlanders with 20 points.

The win keeps the Mustangs in first place in the Big West and, according to Ervin, gives the team more confidence as it tries to win another conference title.

“From here on out, every game is going to be a rivalry game,” Ervin said. “I’m confident in our team that we will use our strengths and play our game at all times.”

Cal Poly will return to action on Jan. 30, when they travel to UC Davis for a game at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball tops UCR, 89-72 Erik Chu @CPMustangSports The Cal Poly women’s basketball team continued its dominance at home, improving to 8-0 this season on its home floor and to 5-1 in Big West play as the Mustangs defeated UC Riverside 89-72 on Saturday in Mott Athletics Center.

Right from the opening tip, the Mustangs were ready to play. Junior guard Ariana Elegado and senior guard Jonae Ervin led the way for Cal Poly, providing both scoring and passing for their teammates.

Elegado led the team with 18 points, going 7 of 14 from the field and 4 of 8 from 3-point range. She also added a team-high seven assists with two steals.

Elegado continued her standout season, where she is averaging 16.7 points per game.

“My teammates give me confidence, and just having that mentality that no one can stop us really gives us an advantage when playing,” Elegado said.

Ervin scored 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field and produced five assists. Junior guard Kristen Ale was the third Mustang in double figures as she scored 10 points off

the bench. Twelve Cal Poly players scored on the night.

The hot shooting from Elegado and Ervin propelled the Mustangs to an early 15-4 lead, and Cal Poly never looked back. An Elegado lay up pushed Cal Poly’s lead to 20 at one point in the half. At halftime, the Mustangs held a 45-26 lead over the Highlanders.

The Mustangs held their largest lead of the game, 28 points with 7:47 left in the game, when sophomore guard Paige Brown converted a three-point play. The
