Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo are truly special in that the more time you spend attending Cal Poly and exploring SLO, the more you uncover what makes the city and school so unique. Cal Poly’s Open House gives incoming students a chance to take a look into life at Cal Poly, from talking to some of the student-ran clubs, touring the different facilities and even experiencing the Thursday night farmer’s market, these few days give incoming freshman a chance to immerse themself in Cal Poly.
Inside this year’s edition of Open House, you’ll find some fun information on the music scene in SLO, fun day trips and places you can visit on the weekends, and some more informational articles; like tips on how to build up a sense of community while living in the dorms and descriptions of resources that can help guide you through your first year at Cal Poly.
During my time at Cal Poly, I’ve continually discovered new aspects of both the university and the city it’s in. With ever-evolving programs and events, the experience remains fresh and exciting. Engaging with various on-campus clubs and organizations has enriched my journey here. As I approach my last quarter, I’m proud of my time at Cal Poly and excited for new students to craft their own memorable experiences. To those new to Cal Poly, welcome, and enjoy the ride.

HISTORY OF
1904
THE BEGINNING
Cal Poly’s Open House started as Farmer’s Picnic in 1904. Farmer’s Picnic was a day for touring new buildings, eating barbeque and enjoying agriculture shows.
FARMER’S PICNIC
Farmer’s Picnic transitioned to Poly Royal, which began in 1993 and was created to be “A Country Fair on a College Campus.” This event showcased the efforts of Cal Poly students. Parents, alumni, incoming students and community members were encouraged to attend and witness a parade, livestock judging, agriculture shows, barbeque and dance. There were various themes for Poly Royal, along with guests of honor who supported Cal Poly.

1904-94
POLY ROYAL
For four years there was no Poly Royal due to vandalism in 1990. Stores and residences were vandalized by a crowd of 1,000 individuals during Poly Royal weekend.
PRESENT DAY
2024
Today, Open House is a weekend event showcasing what Cal Poly has to offer from resources, organizations, academics and overall insight into campus life. There are a range of events to attend from “Campus Preview Night at Farmer’s Market” to “Admitted Students’ Discovery Day” and the Poly Royal Parade. This year, the New Student & Transition Programs will host a Student Diversity and Belonging Panel. This panel will include a speaker from The Office of Diversity and Inclusion along with student representatives from Student and Belonging Centers. Additionally, Spanish translations will be incorporated throughout most of the New Student & Transition Programs’ Open House events through signs and live and app translations.
OPEN HOUSE
In 1994, Open House was created. It is a blend of Farmers’ Picnic, Poly Royal and Admitted Students’ Preview Day. Open House is the chance for students, current and prospective, along with parents, alumni, and community members, to experience the best of Cal Poly and what the university offers.

WELCOME MUSTANGS!

In fall 2026, Cal Poly will switch from the quarter system to the semester system. The semester calendar allows for more in-depth learning, increased opportunities for projects and Learn by Doing, as well as more time to develop closer relationships between faculty and students. It will also give students greater access to internships and study abroad opportunities. For more information and resources to support students throughout the transition, visit semesters.calpoly.edu
If you have questions or concerns and would like to talk with the director of semester conversion, Dr. Rachel Fernflores, she will hold zoom o ice hours for incoming students and their supporters on Tuesdays, 12-1 p.m., each week beginning Tuesday, April 16, 2024 until and including Tuesday, May 28, 2024 (https://calpoly.zoom.us/j/89066808473). You can also reach her via email at semester-conversion@calpoly.edu.
Freshman Resources: Transitioning from High School to Cal Poly
By Xiomara Lopez
Continuing to pursue education can be both a familiar and new experience. Familiar due to the continuation of schooling, and new because of the differences from previous schools and tasks. High schools and universities may provide resources, but they could differ in what resources they offer or how they are presented. The following is an insight into a few similar resources and how they differ.
Mustang Media Group 10
Office Hours
There are times when students have questions about their classes, either about a specific assignment or test, and sometimes there is uncertainty about when it is best to ask their professors questions. The best time to talk to teachers in high school may have been right before or after class and during lunch. At Cal Poly, professors have office hours. Office hours are when professors have consistently scheduled time during the week for students to talk to them about their class, assignments and concerns. Talking to professors is not limited to office hours, some professors express that if their office hours don’t work for students, they can schedule an alternative date and time to talk to them. Office hours are shared with students on the professor’s syllabus at the beginning of the quarter.
Advisors
In high school, students have counselors and staff whom students can ask questions about their classes, future goals and college dreams. Similarly, Cal Poly has places where students can ask questions about their classes and career possibilities. The Mustang Success Center is an advising center for first-year students. This center aids freshmen transitioning to Cal Poly through navigating registration for classes, identifying additional on-campus resources, and understanding university policies. The Mustang Success Center is located in building 52, room D37, the Science building across from Baker’s Center for Science and Math, and offers virtual and/ or in-person hours. Instructions on how to attend virtual drop-ins are available online at https://success.calpoly.edu/content/whereare-we.
There is also the Freshmen Focus Team available for freshmen. The Freshmen Focus Team consists of three career counselors focused on aiding students in navigating their career interests and goals. These counselors aid freshmen in planning their engagements and involvement in their major and career, discovering career possibilities and reviewing resumes and cover letters. Falling under Career Counselors, the Freshmen Focus team offers virtual drop-in hours along with scheduled appointments. Career Counselors are located in building 124, near Spanos Stadium, and instructions on how to set up an appointment are available online at https:// careerservices.calpoly.edu/explore-services/career-counseling.
Orientation
Orientation is one of the first impressions students have on a school, it can consist of touring the school, participating in group activities and witnessing more of what the school has to offer. In high school, some orientations are for one day to introduce the school and peers to students, but Cal Poly goes out of its way to ensure students are properly introduced to campus. There are two parts to orientation: SLO Days and Week of Welcome, otherwise known as WOW. SLO Days is part one of orientation, during which incoming students learn about campus resources and engage in social group activities. WOW is the second part of orientation,
a week-long experience of learning about and touring Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo. A week before the fall quarter starts, new students engage in a variety of events and activities to learn more about what Cal Poly has, to meet Cal Poly peers both new and current and overall have the opportunity to explore the town with other Cal Poly students.
Clubs
In high school, students create and maintain various clubs focused on volunteer services, interests, and more. Some high schools may have a limited number of clubs but they are opportunities for students to meet peers with similar interests. At Cal Poly there are over 400 recognized student organizations for students to be involved in. These clubs include cultural organizations, sportoriented clubs, niche video game fandoms, sailing and so much more. Students can find out about clubs through flyers, social media and on the Cal Poly Now Organizations website: https:// now.calpoly.edu/organizations, but the best way to get involved with clubs and Greek life on campus is through the club showcase during WOW week. The club showcase is typically a two-hourlong informational fair where nearly all of Cal Poly’s organizations booth to meet and recruit new students.

Unmissable Events for Your First Quarter on Campus
By Xiomara Lopez
When students begin their first year of college, there is much to explore, from the environment to classes, peers, and more. If you’re looking to delve into Mustang pride, there are many events to attend and experience to kickstart the school year.
Mustang Media Group 32
WOW
Week of Welcome, WOW, is a week-long experience for new students to explore Cal Poly and the town of San Luis Obispo. Held the week before the fall quarter starts, it is a part of orientation and involves placing students into groups led by current Cal Poly students, giving them a chance to meet both new and current Cal Poly students. WOW is an opportunity to learn about Cal Poly while connecting with other students and exploring San Luis Obispo with social activities. These activities are determined mainly by WOW leaders, students who volunteer to lead WOW groups in pairs. Activities that some WOW groups have participated in include group bonfires, hiking, paintball, kayaking and movie nights.
Halloweekend
Halloweekend buzzes with excitement as it falls right on the doorstep of Halloween, setting the stage for a thrilling celebration spanning across all of San Luis Obispo. Students can be seen around town in their costumes, dressed in anything from recent pop-culture moments to specific film characters. There is a range of costumes to be seen. On campus, ASI has hosted free Halloween events for spooky fun. There are a variety of Halloween-themed events and activities held in San Luis Obispo, not limited to Halloweekend but throughout the fall season, such as visiting pumpkin patches. One thing to note is while there are numerous Halloween celebrations, a Safety Enhanced Zone is in place during this time, meaning there are increased fines for violating certain laws.
Sports
Immerse yourself in Cal Poly pride by attending athletic games. There are numerous sports during the fall quarter, such as football, soccer and volleyball. Wear your Cal Poly gear as you cheer in the stands for your fellow Cal Poly peers, celebrating every win and point earned. Enjoy vibrant fireworks lighting up the night sky during Cal Poly’s football Homecoming game. There’s also a chance for your families to experience what it is like to attend a football game at Cal Poly during Mustang Family Weekend. Mustang Family Weekend is when families visit campus to be with their students and enjoy what Cal Poly has to offer, such as sports games. With different sports having their league season in the fall quarter, there is a multitude of games to enjoy and opportunities to support Cal Poly athletes.
Performing Arts
Students can also attend performing art events throughout the quarter and academic year. The Performing Arts Center is located across the red brick dorms on Grand Avenue, where numerous performances are held for Cal Poly students and the San Luis Obispo community. Enjoy a wide range of performances from dancers, musicians, and more as Cal Poly Arts arranges for performers to showcase their art on campus. Students can get
discounted tickets for some performances as well. The Cal Poly Arts season is available to view on their website: https://www. calpolyarts.org/. Additionally, there are productions by the Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department and the Music Department in the fall quarter and throughout the academic year. Explore all of the events held at the Performing Arts Center at their website: https://www.pacslo.org/events.
ASI events
Throughout the fall quarter and academic year, ASI hosts a variety of events for students. ASI stands for Associated Students, Inc., which provides events and resources for students, as stated on their website. Previously, ASI put together concerts and comedy shows for Cal Poly students, which were free for students with their student and government ID cards. In the fall of 2023, ASI Events hosted Dayglow, an alternative/indie artist known for his viral song “Can I Call You Tonight?”. In the 2024 winter quarter, ASI hosted a comedy show by YouTuber and comedian Noel Miller. These events have garnered a lot of excitement and are an opportunity for students to attend a free event with their friends in the evening. Also, don’t be surprised to see students doing yoga with goats on Dexter Lawn as this is another event ASI has hosted during the school year. There are a range of events organized and established for students to discover, either by surprise when walking on campus or through online and social media.
WOW is an opportunity to learn about Cal Poly while connecting with other students and exploring San Luis Obispo with social activities.

Freshman Year – An Experience Like No Other
By Sydnie Bierma
Three
Mustang Media Group 42
different perspectives on how to make connections living on campus your first year.
As cheesy as it may sound, living in a dorm your freshman year is a once in a lifetime opportunity. “There’s truly no other experience like it,” said political science first year, Brooke Hoadley.
Hoadley lives in tsitpxatu, one of the yak?ityutyu dorms on campus. She has met some of her closest friends in the dorm according to Hoadley.
“The biggest thing for me was opening our dorm doors and going around and meeting everyone on our floor,” Hoadley said in regard to meeting new people so far in her freshman year.
Aside from meeting people on your floor, there’s constant activity in different areas in the dorm.
The dorms are “a very unique social environment you can take advantage of,” Owen Roberts, civil engineering sophomore said.
No matter the time of the day there are people constantly around. Ava Emmerling, a Kinesiology sophomore, lived in the yak?ityutyu dorm, nipumu?, during her freshman year.
She started her mornings in the dorms by making breakfast downstairs in the communal kitchen. While making breakfast, she highlighted having passing conversations with other people from the dorm. “While you don’t always know everyone, there will still always be a friendly conversation,” Emmerling said.
After making breakfast and going to class, Emmerling would return to the dorm and go upstairs to the study room. While the study room’s main purpose is to offer a quiet place to study, Emmerling mentioned that often “you try to study but end up talking to people for like three hours.”
In the dorms “no day is the same,” Emmerling said.
Along with making friends in your dorm, there are opportunities to meet people from the other dorms on campus.
“I think it’s really cool that you get to become really close with people from your dorm and also meet friend groups from other dorms,” Roberts said.
Other places on campus also make for good places to socialize and meet new friends.
Business sophomore Jack Collins went to the Rec a lot during his freshmen year to workout, but also for the social aspect.
“It doesn’t matter what time you go or what you’re doing there. You’re going to run into at least one person you know,” Collins said.
Other social places on campus include the new 1901 Marketplace, Vista Grande and the University Union.
Hoadley goes to the different coffee shops on campus including Scout and Julians to get homework done and socialize.
Similar to Hoadley, Emmerling spent many of her weekend mornings at Scout talking about all the weeks’ and weekends’ activities that went on with her friends and acquaintances. “It
was also a place to talk about your plans for the upcoming week,” Emmerling said.
Another outdoor freshman social hub is the yak?ityutyu lawn.
“It’s so nice especially when it gets sunny out, I feel like every single person that lives in the dorm is out,” Hoadley said.
Emmerling described the yak?ityutyu lawn as a place of peace and chill.
While the first quarter is where the majority of socialization and friendships begin, it’s never too late in the year to reach out.
Hoadley lives in the math and science living community and expanded her friend circle by joining the Women in Business club on campus to line up with her interests more accurately.
“It’s been nice that I’ve been able to meet girls who are juniors and seniors that have been through what I’m going through,” Hoadley said.
Dorms are a place of so many different kinds of people from all over the world. “It was a beautiful experience to meet amazing people who were also driven,” Emmerling said. Living in the honors dorm her freshman year she met people from all different majors.
“Everyone was so cool in their own way,” Emmerling said.
The connections you make in the dorm can be brought outside of the dorms and through your future years at Cal Poly.
Collins now lives off campus with 4 people from his previous dorm. “I would not have the opportunity to meet and get to know so well if we hadn’t been in the same dorm and I cannot imagine life without them,” Collins said.
“Living in the dorm, you don’t realize it at the moment, but you’re making friends that you’ll have for the rest of your life,” Roberts said.
At Cal Poly there are over 400 recognized student organizations for students to be involved in.

So you’ve just come to Cal Poly, and face the dilemma of every new college student for the first time away from home: What the heck do I eat? Coming to Cal Poly right now is opportune since the 1901 Marketplace dining complex just opened up. After being under construction for about three years, the doors have opened to a vast selection of dining across the board. Pop inside for a variety of choices, but here is a quick list of a few favorites:
• Chick-fil-A: Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Chick-fil-A is delicious. Grab your chicken sandwich and lemonade with a smile on your face while on your way to your next class. The only downside is the line can be pretty long, especially at peak meal hours around lunchtime, but it’s well worth the wait for that delicious milkshake.
• Pom & Honey: If you need a Mediterranean fix, check out Pom & Honey. Whether you want a bowl or wrap, this restaurant caters to your Mediterranean cravings. Everything here is light and fresh, with a cucumber crunch.
• Poly Deli: Located right next to Pom & Honey, the deli is great for a classic sandwich. Prepared pretty much any way you could possibly imagine, it’s a staple for a classic sammy, prepared cold or hot.
• Coming soon: Panda Express will be opening in spring 2024!
Mustang Station:
Known primarily for its giant pizzas, this is a favorite when you just need an entire pepperoni pizza. You can opt for something else, like a meatball sub or wings, but pizza is the way to go here.
Starbucks:
There are two Starbucks locations on campus. One is in the university union and another at Campus Market. Get your classic strawberry acai or chai latte with a ham and cheese panini. No surprises; it’s Starbucks.
Taco Bell:
Sometimes, you just really need the Doritos Locos Tacos, and sometimes, you need one late at night. The Taco Bell in PCV has you covered. Grab your Crunchwrap Supreme and head back to your dorm. Bonus: Taco Bell is open till midnight.
Shake Smart:
Located right outside the Rec Center, Shake Smart is a favorite amongst anyone looking to hit their protein goal, or just have a delicious acai bowl with fresh fruit. Everything here is all-natural, with no added ice cream, yogurt, artificial or added sugar… and did we mention every shake is at least 25 grams of protein? Drop by for a shake in a variety of flavors, like classic vanilla and chocolate, or more adventurous strawberry fields and PB squared.
Einstein Bros. Bagels:
Located in PCV, Einstein Bros. is the place to go for not just bagels, but sandwiches of all kinds. Popular options include egg sandwiches, soups, salads and plenty of baked goods. Hot or cold, breakfast or lunch, vegan or vegetarian, any way you call it, Einstein Bros. has your back. They also have a variety of iced and hot drinks that give Starbucks a run for its money.
Jamba:
It’d be a crime not to include Jamba on this list. Jamba started as a Cal Poly senior project in 1990 and has since become one of the most popular juice shops, with over 850 locations worldwide. Cal Poly is proud to boast Jamba as a SLO local favorite. Make your school proud and pop into the Vista Grande facility for a classic smoothie or green juice.
Food trucks:
There are several food trucks around campus, often with more niche themes and narrow food choices. Although they’re not always in the same location, try to catch them for some of the best food at Cal Poly. Although not an exhaustive list, here are a few staples:
• Jewel of India: Typically located at the Mott Athletics Center or near the PAC, Jewel of India offers Cal Poly students a taste of delicious Indian food. Curry and masala are a staple around campus.
• What’s Cookin’ Kosher: This food truck, usually found at the PAC, is, you guessed it, all kosher. Come get some falafel, a shawarma plate or schnitzel.
• G Brothers Smokehouse: Located at the Mott Lawn around lunchtime, G Brothers Smokehouse has some really tasty bites like hot dogs, burgers, pulled pork sandwiches and killer nachos. You can usually smell the delicious aroma when walking by.
• Plant Ivy: Bouncing between the PAC and Mott, Plant Ivy is for all your vegetarian or vegan needs, including their feature impossible burgers.

SLO Day Trips
By Romina Montemurro
It’s no secret the Central Coast is blessed with gorgeous scenery. With a perfect Mediterranean climate nestled between the mountains, just near the ocean, SLO has it all. Halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the Central Coast is a much sought-after location for many activities and day trips. If you’ve got a day off coming up, consider checking some of these “must-sees” off your list.
Mustang Media Group 52
1. Avila Beach
Avila Beach, one of the most popular beaches in SLO, offers a myriad of activities, including whale watching, paddle boarding and sunset watching. On land, you can bike down the Bob Jones Trail for three miles of stunning Avila sights. Drop by the Central Coast Aquarium to venture into the aquatic world. Here, you can touch starfish, view jellyfish and even see leopard shark feedings at certain times of the day. If you want to get closer to the ocean, you can book a kayak or boat charter trip to see some aquatic animals in their natural habitat. Avila is known for its calm waters, which makes it perfect for swimming, paddling or a romantic walk along the shore. On a casual day with your friends, take a walk down the pier and relax as you whale watch; there’s no better spot to catch a glimpse of gray and humpback whales. Then go down to the shore and dig your toes in the sand, catching some rays as the sun goes down. If you’re feeling hungry, grab some lunch at Custom House or Ocean Grill and dig into some seafood that comes as fresh as it gets.
2. Hearst Castle
The ultimate Central Coast architecture takes form in a blend of Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean Revival art styles. Once home to publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst, Hearst Castle is both a gorgeous sight and a local history lesson all rolled into one. The castle features pieces of priceless Italian, Greek and Egyptian art, ornate tapestries and luxurious pools lined in gold, among a not-so-quaint 115 rooms and eight gardens. Right in the gorgeous local San Simeon mountains, it’s no question why Hearst chose La Cuesta Encantada (“The Enchanted Hill”) to be on the Central Coast.
For classic movie buffs, Kirk Douglas’ “Spartacus” was filmed here. And for non-movie buffs, a Lady Gaga music video.
3. Solvang
Raise a mug to “Little Denmark.” Located right in your own backyard, Solvang is just an hour’s drive from Cal Poly. This charming little village is completely Danish inspired… and we mean completely. Solvang was founded by just three Danish immigrants in the early 20th century and maintains traditional Danish culture in America. Visitors can grab a Danish treat from a local bakery and enjoy it under a windmill while being serenaded by traditional Danish accordion music. Be sure to grab a ride on the trolley as you move from boutique to boutique, the Hans Christian Andersen Museum or one of Solvang’s local theaters. Experience the authentic charm of Copenhagen without having to leave the Central Coast.
4. Sunset Drive-in
A classic blast from the past, experience one of California’s last active drive-ins right here in SLO. Sunset plays two movies nightly for just a single fee, so check online to see the regularly changing lineup of films. Sunset plays a mix of newly released films and
familiar favorites, so go for a new flick or a classic from childhood. Gather some friends or plan a date, and roll into the drive-in. Tune your radio to the right audio and enjoy a 1950s experience in 2024. If you’re hungry, pop into the snack bar and grab some treats (their nachos are a staple). If you’re linking cars or setting up outside your car, pack some blankets since it can get chilly once the second movie rolls around.
On Sundays, Sunset Drive-In turns into a bustling swap meet from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Be sure to stop by if you’re looking for unique antiques or some newer garage sale-type items.
5. Charles Paddock Zoo
The Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero is home to some amazing furry and ferocious creatures. Founded by a local park ranger in the 1950s, the zoo originally was a menagerie after Paddock would nurse wild animals back to health. Now, you can drop by to make friends with some monkeys, lemurs and red pandas, or add a pop of pink color to your life with the Caribbean flamingos. The zoo proudly boasts over 100 animals and 45 different species. If you’re feeling brave, see the endangered Malayan Tiger, Menderu. Small but mighty, the Atascadero zoo is a great destination for your group of friends or when your family is visiting.
6. Carrizo Plain National Monument
For what will probably be the most peaceful afternoon of your entire life, Carrizo Plain offers a look into simply California, pure and untouched. Made a national historic landmark in 2012, Carrizo is essentially a range of mountains and valleys within an enclosed grassland… and not much else. Although it may sound bland, it can be a necessary refresh you might not even know you need. Take some food, water, sunscreen and a good book with you as you lay out and enjoy the silence and get in touch with nature. Especially after a long week of classes, humbling yourself with nature at California’s largest native grassland will be worth it. And if you’re that kind of person, it’s also an excellent location for a photo shoot and aesthetics.

DEI Resources
By Trevor Baumgardner
Cal Poly is a PWI, predominantly white institution. Although this is true, the university has a wide array of resources that foster a campus culture that celebrates diversity and ensures equitable opportunities for all students. This article lists a few of the resources that can help students feel welcomed and represented during their time at Cal Poly.
Mustang Media Group 56
BEACoN Mentoring Program
Believe, Educate/Empower, Advocate, Collaborate and Nurture is a program run through the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion. The program ensures that underrepresented students gain research experience and are granted opportunities to work one-on-one with faculty mentors. Students selected for the program work with faculty in the Winter and Spring quarters for ten hours a week, and receive a $2,000 quarterly stipend distributed through financial aid. Students involved in BEACoN build community with other scholars and work to build up development skills while working in a safe space to share ideas and experiences.
Disability Resource Center
One of the most well known resources on campus, the DRC helps make Cal Poly an accessible and inclusive community through helping those with permanent and temporary disabilities. The DRC focusses on equity, making sure all students have equal access to resources and all aspects of campus life. Services through the DRC can include aid with transportation around campus, extending test taking times and note taking assistance. Those looking to register with the DRC can register or ask questions on their website drc.calpoly.edu.
Safer
Safer is Cal Poly’s prevention education and confidential advocacy resource for sexual assauly, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, stalking, sexual harassment and sexual exploitation. This is one of the only resources on campus that allows survivors to report anonymously. Survivors are at the forefront of safers advocacy efforts, these efforts include crisis intervention, accompaniments, referrals and more. Safer also has a Prevention Education Staff that works to promote pro-social behavior norms which encourage community accountability so that violence never occurs in the first place. To get in contact with safer visit their Instagram @ calpolysafer or email them at safer@calpoly.edu.
United Sorority & Fraternity Council
For those looking to embrace a culture of friendship and family with a focus on cultural identity, a Sorority or Fraternity under the USFC may be the perfect fit. The multicultural Greek organizations at Cal Poly fall under their category work to foster a heightened sense of community within their organizations. They also work to spread cultural awareness among other Greek organizations on campus. Some of these Greek organizations are Hispanic or Asian interest organizations, but members do not have
to exclusively identify with those identities to join. USFC’s mission is to create a support group to help organizations present their ideas, voice and cultural awareness to the Cal Poly community.
To get in contact with safer visit their Instagram @ calpolysafer or email them at safer@calpoly.edu.

Why Cal Poly: Student Testimonials
By Tori Gordon
This time of the year is filled with lots of uncertainty because many students are in the final stages of deciding which university they will commit to for the next four years. I remember even for myself, I felt a lot of pressure to choose a school that would not only be academically enriching but also one where I knew I could cultivate strong friendships and create lasting memories. So why Cal Poly? This was a question that I was asked repeatedly when I first committed to the school and to be honest, I did not have much of an answer except that I knew the college was well respected. I understand how daunting it can be to say yes, but maybe in some way this segment can give you a better picture of what it would be like to come to Cal Poly.
I talked to a range of students here asking them what their favorite part of Cal Poly is and what they believed made their experience unique. A majority spoke on the beauty that San Luis Obispo has to offer. Being located on the central coast, it is no surprise the extent to which students bring up and rave about it. From hiking trails on campus and cruising down to the beaches, these areas surrounding Cal Poly provide students with an uplifting and refreshing experience.
Luke Mendoza, Environmental Management and Protection Junior
Environmental Management and Protection junior Luke Mendoza says that his favorite part of Cal Poly is the diversity that he has been able to find during his time here.
“I definitely experience culture shock however, through the clubs and organizations I’m involved in that are centered around POC and queer voices, it’s made me feel grateful to have a community of people in the same situation as I,” Mendoza said.
Mendoza believes that it is important to acknowledge that yes, Cal Poly is a predominately white institution (PWI). However, despite the culture shock he faced, he was still able to find communities that held the same identities as himself when seeking it out.
Mustang Media Group 60
Samantha Hernandez, Animal Science Junior
Animal Science Junior Samantha Hernandez spoke about how Cal Poly having access to livestock was one of the primary reasons she decided to come here. Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences is also a unique aspect of the university. Hernandez explained that not many colleges, especially in California, can provide students with access to livestock, and getting to work alongside these animals at the unit is one of the most memorable experiences she has had at Cal Poly.
Sarah Bachman, Political Science Junior
Political science junior Sarah Bachman also spoke about how surprised she was about how supportive the community was at Cal Poly.
“Many universities tend to have a much more competitive nature to them, but here at Cal Poly not just faculty but students are willing to work with and support you,” Bachman said.
When posing the question of what makes Cal Poly unique, an overwhelming majority of responses I received highlighted Cal Poly’s learn by doing motto. Mendoza talked to me about how he would continually have conversations with friends who do not attend Cal Poly and hear about their long days filled with large lecture halls, note-taking, and going home.
“Most programs at Cal Poly don’t focus on intellectual frameworking and theorizing, instead they harp on application-based concepts and field experience, which I feel is most important on a résumé or first job in your career. Cal Poly produces immediate effects for students that want immediate results, and I think that has attributed to its success.”
Juan Rodriguez, Civil Engineering Freshman
Civil Engineering freshman
Juan Rodriguez explained how surprised he was about the support he received and the mentorships he cultivated, considering it is only his second quarter here. Rodriguez spoke on how he has had multiple upperclassmen within his major approach him and give him tips on how to acquire internships and how to get more involved in academic-related clubs.
“It is so nice to know that there are people here that actually care about furthering my professional development and success,” Rodriguez said.
Cherokee Trent, Child Development Junior
Small class sizes were another commonly praised part of Cal Poly. Child Development junior Cherokee Trent said she really admired how small her class sizes have been.
“Most of my classes have at maximum 30 students, making it easy to connect with professors and strengthen my connections with classmates,” Trent said.
There are a great number of reasons why students choose to come here and genuinely want to stay. As my time at Cal Poly comes to a close, I can confidently say there is so much this institution has to offer. The experiences I have had inside and outside the classroom are some that will stick with me for the rest of my life and it is clear that the pool of students I talked to would say the same. I hope this segment clarifies what Cal Poly and the greater San Luis Obispo area have to offer students. Now I pose this question to you: So why Cal Poly?

How to Experience SLO’s Music Scene
By Trevor Baumgardner
San Luis Obispo is known for its thriving underground music scene. The Thursday night farmer’s market turns into a live concert venue where music accompanies the various booths, the downtown bars light up with the sounds of local bands and artists entertaining guests and Cal Poly students search for different houseshows on Saturday nights.
Whether you’re a newcomer to Cal Poly or San Luis Obispo or simply haven’t delved into the music scene yet, let this article be your guide to getting started.

slo.underground
@slo.underground is an Instagram account run by a Cal Poly student dedicated to sharing house shows in SLO. Dive into this virtual hub for a firsthand glimpse into the vibrant world of house shows and beyond. The account is a centralized place for not just house shows, but also information on which bars rocking which bands and what venues certain artists will be performing at if they need a venue larger than a house. With regular updates and a steady stream of event flyers, this account ensures you are always in the know about the next big musical adventure in town.
WAV Zine
Created in the summer of 2020, WAV Zine was made by a group of friends and Cal Poly students who wanted to create a community for music and art in San Luis Obispo free from limitations. WAV Zine produces articles with interviews with local musicians and artists, articles detailing what music their team has been listening to and of course, zines. At the time of writing this, they have eight different zines available for free on their website. The zines are elaborately designed with articles that encapsulate the art scene in SLO, expanding past just musical artists. They feature poems written by local artists about locations at Cal Poly or in SLO, photography showcasing abstract ideas and local house shows and articles that capture the vast artistic scene in SLO. Writing about the zines does not do them justice, its best to visit their website wavzine.com to grasp the raw creativity behind them fully. Finally, WAV Zine also curates an array of house shows throughout the year, showcasing a diverse range of local bands and artists that span across various genres of music.
KCPR
Cal Poly’s radio station brands itself as a tastemaker and cultural staple of San Luis Obispo. You can tune in to the station at 91.3 FM or through the web player on their website kcpr.org. With a diverse range of programming spanning music, sports, podcasts and news, KCPR serves as a platform for students to express themselves creatively and engage with the local community. Known for its eclectic playlists and commitment to independent artists, KCPR has established itself as a hub for alternative and underground music enthusiasts. The station also provides valuable hands-on experience in radio production, event organization, podcast development and much more. Approximately 60 students are presently engaged with KCPR, with recruitment for DJs and other roles typically commencing in the fall.
Shabang
10 years ago, a 20-person concert held at the top of a mountain turned into an annual music and arts festival that takes place exclusively in San Luis Obispo. From live music performances by both local and renowned artists to interactive art installations and food vendors, Shabang offers an immersive experience that captivates all who attend. Shabang truly embodies the
creative spirit and inclusive nature of San Luis Obispo, fostering connections and memories that last long after the festival. Shabang also involves itself with the SLO community by boothing at Cal Poly and Farmer’s Market and hosting a Battle of the Bands concert before the festival where they grant the winner a chance to perform at Shabang. Past festivals have headlined artists like TV Girl, Hippo Campus, Men I Trust and STRFKR. This year’s Shabang music festival features big names like Thundercat, Peach Pit and Noizu, and also some local artists like Swede & Skogen, Couchdog and earthship.
