With the unique environment of the Central Coast, a community-centered town and cutting-edge learning facilities, San Luis Obispo has everything you need to thrive as a Cal Poly student. When I first came to tour Cal Poly, I had never really experienced the Central Coast before, and honestly knew close to nothing about San Luis Obispo. Within the past four years though, San Luis Obispo has become one of my favorite places in the world, and it now holds a special place in my heart. Cheesy as it may sound, as a senior entering my last quarter of college, I am truly so fond of this beautiful coastal gem of a town and can’t imagine having experienced college anywhere else. Of course, the physical location of Cal Poly can’t be beat, with gorgeous coastal mountains, charming beach towns and its pleasant Mediterranean climate. But more than that, San Luis Obispo has won my heart with its wonderful community and local . From the Thursday night farmers markets to bike nights to the “tri-tip challenge,” San Luis Obispo is rich with fun, social traditions that will make your college experience unique. Whether you are a beach-lover, a coffee connoisseur or an indy audiofile, there is a community here for you. I hope this edition opens your eyes to the hidden wonders of San Luis Obispo and all of the opportunities there are for you here.

The customer service is immaculate as well, with the waiters constantly checking up on the customers and refilling their waters. Thai Palace truly lives up to its mission to serve fresh and flavorful food, and will not disappoint as the best Thai restaurant in San Luis Obispo!

BEST ITALIAN

Giuseppe's Authentic Italian cuisine takes on a whole new meaning at Giuseppe's Cucina Rustica. The savory smells pouring out of the large glass doors invites you in and begs you to take a seat. Immediately you are in a cozy atmosphere of string lights, lemon trees, and camaraderie. In 1988, Giuseppe DiFronzo took the idea of the original Giuseppe's Cucina in Pismo Beach and ran with it. The restaurant has since expanded into two separate locations, one in Downtown San Luis Obispo and one in Pismo Beach. Giuseppe's was an early adopter of the farm-to-fork mentality,

by Ingrid Blau which refers to the use of fresh local ingredients, and is adored by both residents and visitors. Guiseppe’s is open daily for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and for dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekends. The food is a perfect example of Italian cuisine made from fresh, local ingredients. There are beverages of all sorts as well as a lengthy dessert menu. The quality of Guiseppe’s can always be indicated by the first bite, sip or smell. This is in part because of the restaurant’s ambrosian

ingredients, including figs, olives, San Marzano tomatoes, squash, Hachiya persimmons and Meyer lemons. On the wine menu, patrons are treated to an infusion of five grapes that produce Giuseppe's own DiFronzo Vineyards wines. The large dining spaces accomodate bigger groups for parties and celebrations, and the space can be reserved for private events as well.

BEST DATE NIGHT RESTAURANT

Flour House couples. The restaurant’s outdoor dining on the back patio sets the romantic mood through its modern art, sleek heat lamps and dim lighting. Inside, the lighting and wall art continue to speak for themselves. The glass light fixtures cast just the right amount of light, giving the restaurant the perfect amount of intimacy and charm. Not only is the environment of Flour House perfect for date night, but the quality of the food makes this restaurant stand out from others. The pizza uses handstretched dough that ferments overnight. It then goes into a brick oven that results in a soft, pillowy crust. I ordered a Flour House original pizza, the Autunno, and it did not disappoint. The pizza is topped with butternut squash sauce, pancetta, provola, fior di latte and splashes of pesto. It was

everything I was dreaming of and more. Flour House offers ‘Meter Monday’ every week where customers can order a meter of pizza with six different tastings. This is a popular tradition in Italy that was invented by Luigi Dell’Amura in the 1930s. The half-meter option is a good option for a double date, as customers can get a half a meter of pizza for four people with three different tastings. The restaurant is located in downtown San Luis Obispo at 690 Higuera St. and is open Sunday, Monday and Wednesday from 4 p.m to 9 p.m., and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

BEST BBQ

Firestone Firestone Grill is a staple in the San Luis Obispo community. With its delicious menu and its prime location on Higuera Street downtown, it is no surprise that Firestone was voted the best barbeque in the area. BEST BURGER

In-N-Out Located roughly 16 miles down U.S. Highway 101 from San Luis Obispo, this California staple is so good it has San Luis Obispo residents driving all the way to Arroyo Grande for their burgers. One of the reasons In-N-Out Burger is the best is because it keeps its menu simple, without trying to be fancy or over the top. The main menu features a basic

our local spot has been serving the Central Coast community for almost 12. Located at 1170 W Branch St. in Arroyo Grande, the burger shop is open from 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. the following day. There is even a drive thru option, switch is great for meals on the go.

BEST VEGETARIAN

Ziggy's Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the restaurant offers a quick and easy experience to try San Luis Obispo’s best vegan takeout that can either be picked up or enjoyed outside the restaurant. In addition to its lunch and dinner menus, Ziggy’s also makes a breakfast burrito and breakfast sandwich, hot and ready to start your day. Central Coasters love breakfast burritos, but a vegan one is even more

appreciated with limited options nearby. With five different types of burgers and a choice between the Ziggy plant-based patty made from black beans, and the Impossible patty, there are plenty of options. The menu also includes different tacos and taquitos made with homemade corn tortillas. Don’t forget about the specialty chicken sandwich, salads and sides at Ziggy’s! No price on the menu is too high and no food quality is too low!

Ziggy’s vision is to make “food for everyone – not just vegans.” Whether you are there for vegan tacos, burgers, salads or sides, you will be greeted with a smile while punk rock, rap or old school jams are being played in the background.

Mustang Media Group 9

Rated the best vegetarian in San Luis Obispo, Ziggy’s offers a variety of 100% plant-based hot take-out options. Located on California Boulevard in San Luis Obispo and newly opened in Paso Robles, this vegetarian joint is known for its “dirty fries” and famous Ziggy Sauce. Ziggy’s is just a short walk from Cal Poly and close to downtown. From vegan street tacos to plant-based burgers to milkshakes, Ziggy’s has a lot to offer. BEST SANDWICH

High Street It is truly no surprise that High Street Deli won the best sandwich in town — it simply is top tier. This is high praise considering the vast amount of sandwich shops in San Luis Obispo. Whether you want to build your own sandwich or try one of High Street’s custom creations, there is something for every palette. The deli prides itself on the food it produces and the culture it has cultivated. Each customer is “able to

The store itself is a cute, vintage spot that has been serving the San Luis Obispo community for almost 100 years – that means it’s been a San Luis Obispo staple for almost a century! How could it not be the best?

BEST MEXICAN

San Luis Taqueria

10 Poly Picks 2022

San Luis Taqueria brings authentic Jalisco Mexican food to San Luis Obispo. The restaurant uses traditional flavoring for its wide variety of entrees and sides. There is even a complimentary chips and salsa bar. “The grilled chicken is flavorful and nothing like any other restaurant here in [San Luis Obispo]” Cal Poly Senior Megan O’Connell said. “I don’t go anywhere else for burritos because they are well mixed and you actually have consistent bites. You get every part of the burrito in every bite.”

BEST BREAKFAST

Louisa's Place In the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo on Higuera Street sits Louisa’s Place, nicknamed Louisa’s. A neighborhood favorite, Louisa’s is a breakfast & lunch diner for all. The local spot has been around for decades giving students, community members and visitors a top-notch dining experience. But the diner did not start off as Louisa’s Place. The restaurant first opened its doors in 1958, but at the time it was named “The Best Grill Ever.” In 1976, Frank and Louise Webb purchased and remodeled the establishment, renaming it after Louise. Fifteen years later, the diner was once again sold, and bought by new owners Edward & Christy Sweeny. To this day, Louisa’s is still owned

Louisa’s opens early, and doesn’t close until the afternoon, allowing customers to sleep in and have a later brunch if they prefer.

BEST PIZZA

Flour House There is no place in San Luis Obispo that replicates the authenticity of an Italian Pizzeria quite like Flour House does. Its pizza, fired in original Stefano Ferrera brick ovens, is the closest thing you’ll taste to the fresh Napoletanastyle pizza of Naples, Italy. Since 2016, Flour House has served its customers the taste of Italy with ingredients of “Denominazione di Origine Protetta”, (Protected Designation of Origin). In the words of Flour House, “this certifies that these Italian products are locally grown and packaged adhering to local farmers and artisans' traditional methods.”

Since 2016, Flour House has served its customers the taste of Italy. Flour House boasts a wide selection of original pizzas created using the restaurant's hand-crafted dough. Additionally, the housemade pasta is created with the highest quality Italian flour. With indoor seating and a beautiful heated outdoor patio, there is plenty of space to enjoy your meal. Flour House does not

by Nathan Harris take reservations, so make sure you show up early, as it is usually crowded. Meter Monday is one of Flour House’s specialties. The idea was taken after the Italian tradition of making pizzas in sizes that corresponded to the number of guests at the table. Every Monday, families and friends can indulge in a meter-long or half meterlong pizza. Meter Monday is the perfect opportunity to celebrate any special occasion. You and your group will leave with a full smile and a full stomach.

No matter which flavor you choose, you will always find the perfect amount of sweetness.

McConnells’ ice cream is made from scratch using products from local producers and natural ingredients. This makes the ice cream dense and flavorful with a rich and velvety mouthfeel. Many of the flavors are sweet, savory or both – the salted caramel, my personal favorite, is the perfect balance of these two tastes. “When I think of ice cream, I think McConnell’s. [It has] so many great flavors that other places can't seem to match,” economics junior Kevin Morris said. Other items like milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches are

offered as well. McConnell's was founded in 1950 in Santa Barbara, California, maintaining a tradition of making ice cream from scratch. This dedication earned McConnell’s the title of “Best Ice Cream in the World” from Time magazine. you. This gluten-free, tangy snack is intense and flavorful without being overwhelming. These chips are more crunchy and less greasy than your typical junk food spicy chip, and their salty undercurrent is the finishing touch. These chips vaguely resemble Takis, yet manage to be more refreshing and completely unique. It’s easy to consume a whole bag in just one sitting; they’re addicting! Trader Joe’s also gets bonus points for making them rolled, since this eliminates

potential messes from their natural bright red coloring. Interestingly enough, said red color comes from vegetables, paprika, and turmeric. These chili lime chips are not only a healthy alternative to some of your favorite junk food, but also a must-buy for your next Trader Joe’s run!

BEST SUNSET SPOT

Prefumo Canyon Looking for a way to enjoy your evening and get your sunset fix? Prefumo Canyon is one of San Luis Obispo’s hidden wonders, and is a must-visit with its open skies and beautiful views. As one of the most centralized and tallest viewpoints in San Luis Obispo, it overlooks a beautiful hillside. On clear days, you might even get a view of Morro Bay. At the intersection of Los Osos Valley Road and Prefumo Canyon Road, follow the trail up for about 15 minutes to reach the top. At the top, there are plenty

of spots to pull over and enjoy the expansive views. The seemingly endless landscape of rolling hills is breathtaking, and the open sky allows for a great sunset location. Especially on clear nights, Prefumo is also ideal for stargazers, with its sky lit up by a beautiful array of twinkling stars. BEST SURF SPOT

Pismo State Beach For this year’s Poly Picks, Cal Poly students chose Pismo State Beach as the best place to get out and ride the waves. When there is a full moon in the sky, Pismo's iconic pier, which stretches 1,250 feet, offers enough light for a late-night surf session if you're up for it! This spot is known for its consistent swell that is welcoming to all levels — even those trying to get up on a board for the first time.

This spot is known for its consistent swell that is welcoming to all levels — even those trying to get up on a board for the first time.

"If you're new to surfing, it's easy to learn on the white water. I've taught a few of my friends how to surf there, so I have fond memories of that," business senior and longboarder Sarah Rauh said. If you’re a beginner, you can visit the Pismo Beach Surf Academy located at 231 Pomeroy Ave., Suite G. The Pismo Beach Surf Academy is a local family-owned business that aims to "share the stoke with you!" New surfers who might not feel ready to have an audience can choose a private individual or group one-on-one session with an instructor from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for $125 per person. If you would rather share the experience with other newbies, you can join a bigger group for $85 from noon to 2:00 p.m. While you're

The beautiful scenery of Pismo Beach heightens the surfing experience. "My favorite part about Pismo is that you look down the beach and get a view of the cliffs and then Avila ridge," landscape architecture senior Erich Lippuner said. Pismo Beach is more than just a surfer's destination, though. The beach that runs for 17 miles along the Central Coast allows enough space for everyone to enjoy activities like volleyball, fishing and maybe even a bonfire with smores' after sunset. So it's no wonder it got named the best surf spot in San Luis Obispo!

BEST NIGHT TIME ACTIVITY

Farmer's Market hands displays the numerous food options such as corn on the cob and ice cream. At the end of each block, there are performances and activities to enjoy. Artists perform their songs and cover crowd favorites, with the audience singing alongside them. As the music picks up, so does the crowd, dancing along to the beat. The wide range of options available and the chance to go out with friends and family to enjoy a Thursday night make the Farmers’ Market enjoyable for Cal Poly students, residents and visitors.

There is something enjoyable for all during this famous event that brings people together with food and music. Before attending, make sure to bring some cash as some of the vendors do not accept credit cards as payment. Kennedy Library The ideal study spot: somewhere that offers both a quiet setting to focus and get work done, and an area for louder, more collaborative work. A seemingly impossible location exists within Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library. The library offers five floors built to accommodate students looking to get work done. The first three floors allow for verbal communication between peers, while floors four and five are quiet areas meant for those trying to separate themselves from louder environments. The Kennedy Library is also home to the recently-reopened Julian’s Cafe Bistro. Located on the second floor, Julian’s serves not only hot and cold drinks but also daily fresh baked goods,

snacks and locally roasted coffee beans. The library also offers many amenities for students. Each floor offers individual study rooms that are isolated from the rest of the library. Many of these study rooms also include TVs that can be used to display work on a larger screen to other people. The library also offers students computer spaces. These desktops are available to anyone with a Cal Poly login and allow users to work with two monitors. Along with computers and study rooms, there are also many printers scattered across

The library is located right next to Dexter Lawn on Cal Poly’s campus and is open from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. However, for students who need to get work done past closing hours, the first floor has a 24-hour space where those loyal to the grind may operate at any time. BEST HIKING TRAIL

Bishop Peak Bishop Peak is perhaps one of the most prominent landmarks in San Luis Obispo. Whether you’re walking on campus or strolling around downtown, you can always see the mountain towering above the buildings and trees that sit below it. Not only is Bishop Peak a beautiful landmark, it also serves as a favorite hiking trail among Cal Poly students and local community members. Depending on which of the tree trails you take, you can access a moderate 3.4- to 4.5-mile roundtrip hike. The trails to the summit, which sits at 1,559 feet, take hikers roughly two hours total. Being the tallest of the Nine Sisters, a chain of volcanic mountains in San Luis Obispo, Bishop Peak consists of some

considerably steep trails, and even spots for bouldering and rock climbing. Reaching the peak is extremely rewarding, whether you’re hiking, biking or climbing to the top. Once you climb atop the large boulders on the peak, you can enjoy 360-degree views of San Luis Obispo County. On clear days, hikers can see from Pismo Beach to as far as Morro Bay. If you can manage to reach the peak in time for sunset or sunrise, you won’t be disappointed. Sometimes, you can even get above the morning and evening fog and enjoy a beautiful golden blanket of clouds. “One of my favorite hikes in California. by Sofia Clark

Once you climb atop the large boulders on the peak, you can enjoy 360-degree views of San Luis Obispo climbing. Getting to the trails is extremely easy if you live in town. In fact, you can find any of the trailheads on Patricia Drive, which is a roughly 10-minute drive from Downtown San Luis Obispo and a four-minute drive from the Cal Poly campus. Bishop Peak can oftentimes get crowded, so it’s important to treat the trail with the utmost respect. Dogs must be on leash and hikers are required to pick up their trash. If you fail to do so, it could result in a fine.
