Poly Picks 2021  1

EDITOR’S NOTE

T

he Cal Poly community has voted on more than 50 categories of San Luis Obispo’s best activities, hangouts, restaurants and more. In this edition, students will find

their favorite local businesses, many of which have just reopened after a year of lockdown. For students who haven’t yet had the opportunity to become as acquainted with our wonderful local community, this year’s Poly Picks may serve as a guide for you to do just that. San Luis Obispo has a lot to offer with a beautiful natural environment, a charming downtown and of course, our great university, Cal Poly. I encourage you to take advantage of your time in this unique place by supporting the local businesses that make up our charismatic town and keeping student traditions alive. Staple activities like beach bonfires at Grover Beach and Firestone’s “Tri-Tip Challenge” help make the Cal Poly experience, so please enjoy looking through this year’s “Poly Picks.”

The restaurant offers a fine dining experience with a casual atmosphere where guests can enjoy flavorful tapas, handcrafted cocktails and an exquisite wine selection sourced from the surrounding Central Coast area. Voted San Luis Obispo’s Best Outdoor Dining runner up and Best Happy Hour, Luna Red prides itself on supporting local farmers, artists and musicians in an effort to raise the service industry standards of community-based sustainability in San Luis Obispo. Luna Red is part of the San Luis Obispo Surfrider Coalition

Luna Red adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic by making their Taco Tuesday menu into a complete takeout menu as a way to continue their business throughout the stay-at-home orders. “Being able to pick up fresh food and tasty tacos during lockdown was definitely a life-saver. I’m looking forward to my next visit when I’m able to sit outside on the patio again,” Cal Poly student Kelly Simms said. Luna Red is the sister restaurant of the award-winning Novo Restaurant and Lounge, and the destination restaurant Robin’s Restaurant in Cambria.

Open since 2007, this cafe is the only one in town that specializes in bagels aside from the Einstein Bros. Bagels on Cal Poly’s campus. The cafe has a simple interior with a few tables outside, but most customers take their bagels home where they can draw the shades and eat in quiet. County is home to many beaches and bonfire campgrounds that scream bonding time in the outdoors! As the best nighttime activity for Cal Poly students to enjoy, our community has voted beach bonfires to be the most memorable time with friends and best evening leisure activity. Drive. Pismo Beach’s prime location makes it the ideal spot for a beach bonfire. In addition to their fire pits, the beach is also near In-N-Out Burger, where visitors can grab a late-night bite on the way home. With many incoming freshmen experiencing their first beach bonfire during Week of Welcome, Cal Poly students have made this an ultimate late night tradition and what it means to be a Mustang! Nutrition senior Arian Aghadjanians said, “I love going to Grover Beach for a bonfire. I remember going down there during WOW with my whole group. We roasted marshmallows and played games. RELAX AND SPEND THE WARM SUMMER DAYS BLISSFULLY AMONGST THE SUN.

As one of the first social activities students experience during their first weeks in San Luis Obispo, many students resonate with this valuable and one-ofa-kind memory that symbolizes one of the best bonding experiences near Cal Poly. The best way to execute a great night with a beach bonfire is to pack the essentials and be prepared to bundle in the cold weather. Follow this bonfire checklist to prepare for your next nighttime excursion: • Extra blankets and towels • Long-sleeve clothing • Extra firewood • Lighter/matches • Napkins • Trash bag • Speaker • Camping chair (optional) • Smores: (1) Graham crackers (2) Chocolate (3) Marshmallows • Extra food and drinks

The shop was established in 1990 with a mission of being an affordable, local alternative to dealerships, while still providing quality service. This mission Feldman, since he took over in 2015. “We are really there for the customer. We consider ourselves to be in the people business,” Feldman said. “We want to be there for the community, especially for the long term.” The shop is a full-service repair shop for both domestic and imported vehicles.
