The city of San Luis Obispo provides a lot for its residents and those attending Cal Poly. Breweries that embody the spirit of the Central Coast and barbecue joints that bring together a community give SLO a unique personality that has caused thousands of people to call it home. Picnic spots by the ocean, sunsets over a canyon and celebrating an Irish holiday with your peers before sunrise create lasting memories that will stay with Cal Poly students throughout their lives.
This publication honors San Luis Obispo by acknowledging the best that San Luis Obispo has. Using data from a survey we asked the community where is the best people-watching spot, what place has the best hangover breakfast, what’s the best Cal Poly class and many more. Hopefully, within these pages, you’ll read about something that evokes cherished memories, or maybe you’ll discover something new to check out. Either way, I hope you enjoy this year’s edition of Poly Picks. Congratulations to the winners of 2024 Poly Picks!

BEST BREAKFAST BURRITO Kreuzberg
By Kylee Brown
The humble breakfast burrito–let's face it, most have had enough of these morning staples to last a lifetime. But sometimes, a restaurant can transcend the ordinary into the exquisite. Kreuzberg hits all the right notes with this delectable creation, including a warm flour tortilla wrapped around two eggs, your choice of sausage, ham, steak, bacon, avocado, or soyrizo, filled to the brim with tater-tots, cheese, sour cream, and salsa. When you bite into this savory work of art, you are making a commitment, and when it comes to choosing the breakfast burrito that stands out in a competitive crowd, Kreuzberg takes the cake. Cal Poly
BEST BBQ Firestone
By Noah Holiber
Continuing its reign of dominance over this category, Firestone Grill once again wins Poly Picks best barbeque award! Going to Firestone is more than just a barbeque sandwich. When you go to Firestone, you are going for an amazing experience filled with live sports, music, memorabilia hanging on the walls, and of course, a delicious barbeque feast.
Firestone brings a taste of traditional southern BBQ to San Luis Obispo, with flavor-packed menu items such as BBQ chicken, classic burgers, ribs, and the
students have spoken, and it's a flavorful, eggy ensemble that surpasses SLO's more pedestrian breakfast options.
Kreuzberg California, founded in 2010, is San Luis Obispo’s taste of Berlin, Germany. Attempting to mimic the cafes in Berlin, owners James and Corinn started the two-story artsy cafe with the "dusk till dawn" mentality. Located in the heart of SLO, 685 Higuera St, Kreuzberg remains an integral part of SLO's vibrant downtown scene around the clock.
Step inside, and you'll find the cafe's sprawling murals and a predominantly black-and-white color scheme with decorative plants. Visitors and locals are attracted to the cafe's artsy aesthetic but stay for the delicious food, drinks, and overall ambiance. The cafe's atmosphere includes a spacious open floor concept
with comfy places to sit, study nooks, an espresso bar in the middle of the room, and plenty of outdoor seating with beautiful string lights. The companionable hiss of milk steaming in harmony with the chatter of happy diners provides the perfect backdrop to socialize, study, or just fuel up before or after a long day.
In the mornings, Kreuzberg serves excellent coffee (with beautiful foam art), espresso, alcohol, pastries, various breakfast items, and the Poly Picks Winning Breakfast Burrito.
Whether you're experiencing their award-winning breakfast burrito or just tucking into a corner to study for school or people-watch, this vibrant, welcoming locale serves up an experience you’ll want to repeat.
famous Tri-Tip Sandwich. With their juicy tri-tip combined with a savory BBQ sauce between two pieces of French roll, this sandwich trumps the competition.
Firestone is a great option for lunch and dinner, with prices that won’t break the bank. The BBQ grilled chicken and burger clocks in at under $6, with the portion sizes ensuring that you are getting your money’s worth, and then some! Firestone also has you covered on all the drinks you could want with a BBQ meal, with a collection of draft beers, cocktails, wine, and soda.
Going to Firestone is more than just a barbeque sandwich.
For people who like to dine inside, Firestone has an awesome indoor seating area packed with TVs that always show live sports, incredible sports memorabilia and great music. And for those who like to sit outdoors, Firestone has a very large patio area with a sunshade, tables for large groups, and that same groovy music.

BEST ITALIAN Giuseppes
By Romina Montemurro
What was once actually a Cal Poly senior project has turned into one of the most beloved San Luis Obispo restaurants. If you need your Italian fix, drop by Giuseppe’s Cucina Rustica for a blended mix of southern Italian roots in a Central Coast package. Whether you want a sandwich for lunch or fresh in-house-made pasta for dinner, Giuseppe’s has you covered. Enjoy a classic traditional pizza like a Margherita, or opt for something spicier with hot Italian peppers (if you desperately want pineapple on your pizza, they’ll accommodate you too!).
The restaurant maintains a modern yet intimate atmosphere with dim lighting and elegant glass light fixtures with soft music in the background. Be sure to share something sweet like a gelato before heading out, or try a signature after-dinner Italian cocktail like a negroni or espresso martini. A dinner here with your amore will have you both saying “ti amo” by the end of the night.

BEST PIZZA
Antonia’s
By Sophia Martino
Opening in early 2023, Antonia’s Pizza is new, but not novice. Whenever guests push the door open there is always someone in the Antonia family to greet those entering. Oftentimes customers are greeted with a smile and a question asking how their day is going. Antonia’s comforting and familial atmosphere is apparent from the second you step inside.
When you walk in, on the left of the front counter are often two large pizzas, that range from a regular cheese or pepperoni to BBQ chicken, that you can very easily pick up and take with you for around $2. Not only do they have cheap
pizza, they have a whole novel of other food items to pick from. Their menu includes a wide variety of food, from salads to all kinds of Mediterranean food, they are as Italian as a pizza place in the United States could come.
Their menu also includes a have-totry meatball sub. It’s one of the most comforting sandwiches you will ever have. Something about their savory and rich marinara, the toasted Italian roll, the melted cheese embracing the meatball, with a wonderfully rich and calming seasoning, not too salty, not too plain, is just absolute perfection.

One drink that makes Scout feel like a blissful oasis is their sparkling tea. This drink mixes sparkling water with the customer’s choice of herbal tea for a refreshing beverage on a sunny day. A delicious option is the hibiscus herbal tea.
When perusing the store after ordering, you will find trinkets and gifts you might just want to pick up for your loved ones.

Eureka
By Kayla Burke
Tucked away in the heart of San Luis Obispo, a culinary gem awaits students, families, locals, visitors and foodies alike. As you walk in you’re instantly welcomed with the smell of sizzling beef, freshly baked buns and a hint of smoky barbecue sauce wafting through the air.
The restaurant has an honorable reputation for its delectable gourmet burgers, craft beers and vibrant atmosphere.
Eureka’s burgers are gourmet and crafted with care, the Angus beef patty is all-natural and carrot-fed from Santa Carota.
“Having tried an extensive amount of items on the menu, my favorite burger would be the double smash burger. I will usually go for that or the Eureka house burger but the double smash is my go to choice,” affirms Eureka’s hospitality guide and Cal Poly student Xan Tassos.
The Double Smash burger is a unique burger with a tasty twist. Comprised of parmesan-crusted brioche, two juicy patties, American cheese, house pickles, onion and garlic aioli.
If interested in a more classic approach, sink your teeth into the signature Eureka Burger, featuring a juicy Angus beef patty topped with tangy housemade sauce, crispy bacon, melted cheddar cheese and caramelized onions; all sandwiched between a toasted brioche bun.
For those seeking a vegetarian option, the Veggie Beet Burger is a musttry. This colorful creation boasts a housemade beet and kidney bean patty, perfectly complemented by house pickles, tomatoes, onions, arugula and a zesty lemon vinaigrette.
But it’s not just about the burgers at Eureka. The restaurant offers a vast selection of the best local craft beers and artisanal cocktails adds another layer of enjoyment to the dining experience.
Whether you’re craving a mouthwatering burger, a cold craft beer, or simply a lively atmosphere to unwind with friends or family, Eureka Burger in San Luis Obispo delivers a one-of-a-kind dining experience that delights senses and leaves a lasting impression.
BEST VEGETARIAN Ziggy’s
By Graciana Ratto
Before walking in the door, Doja Cat’s new single can be heard by customers. The music is loud enough for the chefs to dance while they cook, but quiet enough for the customers to order at the counter. The smell of seasoned impossible breakfast beef and locally farmed vegetables wafts through the small restaurant as students line up to order.
Vegan student, Montana Shultz explains that she went vegan for sustainability reasons years ago and that Ziggy’s makes it easier for her to continue
her journey doing so. When asked about her favorite meal from Ziggy’s, Shultz’s immediate response was the “Crunchwrap Supreme.”
Open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Ziggy’s offers a wide range of cuisine - from breakfast burritos to tacos, to salads. However, their most beloved item on the menu is the “Crunchwrap Supreme.” The Crunchwrap is loaded with seasoned impossible beef, smooth melted pepperjack cheese, crispy tostada shells, house-made sour cream and chipotle aioli, diced tomatoes, thinly chopped lettuce, and grilled in a flour tortilla. As a knockoff to Taco Bell’s
long-lasting Crunchwrap Supreme, Ziggy’s uses dairy-free and vegetarian ingredients to offer the same flavors but allows for a better outcome for the environment.
Dining is available through in-person ordering, Ziggy’s website, or DoorDash. Knowing your order produces fewer greenhouse gasses than the average fast food meal makes Ziggy’s food taste even better!

Madonna Inn Cake
By Romina Montemurro
Food can define a culture and community in a way nothing else can. When it comes to San Luis Obispo dessert, the Madonna Inn takes the cake (quite literally) in a way so authentically Central Coast. Whether it’s for a date night, satisfying a sweet craving, or after getting dinner with your girls, the cake at Madonna Inn suits every flavor occasion. Getting a single slice is great for yourself or a small group, or jump for a full cake in a variety of sizes starting at six inches to a full layer, double sheet for all your friends or a larger party. If you’re buying a larger cake, be sure to call the bakery and order ahead since these cakes are always in demand. Or, you can pop into the Copper Cafe for a more casual meal and slice of cake afterward. Madonna Inn cake is most famous for the iconic pink Champagne cake, but feel free to venture out into the worlds of tasty lemon coconut, raspberry delight, black forest or whatever tames your sweet treat craving. Fluffy and delicate, it’s sweet in a way that won’t make you sick. Topped with gorgeous pink chocolate shavings on top, this cake looks just as good as it tastes. Madonna Inn cake is a staple of SLO culture– and you’ve gotta tap into the local culture through taste. Add it to your next sweet treat outing with your besties, because at Madonna Inn you can totally have your cake (and eat it, too).
Sweet Spotlight: Carrot Cake
Many would say that carrot cake isn’t for everyone… But this carrot cake is. Dig in and experience how each thick moist layer boasts a rich, spiced carrot cake with pineapple-infused cream cheese filling and frosting, adding a tropical twist to balance out the sweet and tangy notes. Enjoy a satisfying crunch of slivered toasted almonds covering the sides for a “healthy” kick, so you get your veggies and antioxidants all in one place… at least, you can tell yourself that.
Be sure to appreciate the artistic flair of marbled chocolate fondant topping with adorable buttercream-made carrot decorations bordering the top in an orange circle. Don’t be shy; give this carrot cake a chance, because all cake deserves love. Even the ones most people would rather not try.
Honorable mentions: Toffee Crunch and Banana Nut

BEST TAQUERIA
Taqueria El Guero
By Layla Shuman
Tucked away in the heart of Downtown San Luis Obispo, Taqueria El Guero brings a taste of Mexico to the Central Coast. Owner Oscar Macias found inspiration for the restaurant through his family’s traditional Mexican recipes.
The menu features all the classic options like burritos, tortas, and quesadillas. However, Taqueria El Guero specializes in birria-style tacos, a staple of family celebrations for Macias. Traditionally made with goat meat, Macias prepares the dish with melt-in-your-mouth stewed beef, pillowy handmade tortillas, creamy
cheese, with a side of vibrant orange consommé. When put together, each ingredient explodes with flavor, and the broth greets you like a warm hug.
El Guero got its name from a nickname Macias had as a child. The term “guero” in Mexican culture generally refers to someone of a lighter complexion, which Macias has been called since an early age. Originally from Michoacán, Macias uses recipes that have been passed down by his grandparents and tweaked to bring the flavors of his home to life in San Luis Obispo.
The restaurant’s interior features vibrant decor and glass windows to the kitchen, so you can watch your food as it’s being made. Taqueria El Guero offers something for everyone, with vegetarian and kids options available. Because each item is traditionally made for Mexican celebrations, any day at this taqueria can feel like a party. With each dish made from family recipes, the only problem you’ll have is deciding which dish to order.

during the week. Brighton Ring, a business sophomore, goes to Scout once a week to plan out her week. “It’s a great place to lock in or enjoy yourself and get a nice cup of coffee with your friends,” Ring said.
Scout is known for its gourmet coffee as well as its fresh-baked pastries.
Aside from its own roasted coffee, Scout makes its own syrups and almond milk. Some of its more popular syrup flavors include honey lavender and vanilla bean. They also sell a variety of teas and make honey tea bowls which contain tea and foamed milk. These are great for the rainier days in SLO or if you’re beginning to feel under the weather. This summer Scout is expanding to Morro Bay and adding a fourth location to the collection.
BEST AçAI BOWL
The Açai Project
By Jadyn White
The closest you can get to a taste of sunshine is in an Açaí Project bowl. As described on their website, food at The Açaí Project is “designed for optimal taste and health.” Fresh fruits and organic ingredients are handprepared to create the perfect balance of tasty and healthy.
The tang of strawberry and pineapple compliments the sweetness of honey and kiwi in the Kahuna bowl, which also consists of banana, mango, granola, and toasted coconut atop an organic açaí base.
And if fruit isn’t really your thing, maybe chocolate and peanut butter is! The Gimme S’more bowl is another unique option for those who favor a richer flavor.
The Açaí Project caters to their SLOcal area with distinct regional offerings. With bowl names like Madonna, Pirate’s Cove, and 805, there’s a special sense of local pride in every bite.
It’s not just their food that makes
The Açaí Project stand out. The open, welcoming environment is a perfect place to catch up with friends and soak
up the sun or grab a bowl or smoothie on the go.
You can get your taste of sunshine (or s’mores) every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Açaí Project, located at 872 Foothill Blvd in the University Square Shopping Center. Your taste buds will thank you.

BEST SURF SPOT
Morro Bay
By Eli Bensen
Miles of beautiful, diverse, and raw coastline surround San Luis Obispo. With so many incredible options for choosing the best surf spot, Poly Picks voters have a difficult decision when it comes to “best surf spot”.
For 2024, voters once again selected Morro Bay as the location with the best breaks. Morro Bay provides visitors and locals with stunning sights. Whether you’re driving the 101 from San Luis Obispo, or coming down from Cayucos, seeing the 576-foot boulder towering over the city of Morro Bay never gets old.
Morro Bay offers surfers consistent and sizable surf. Whenever there is swell in
San Luis Obispo County, Morro is usually a safe bet. If you aren’t sure, just jump on Surfline and look at the multiple camera angles streaming video of the spot 24/7. The best surf at Morro typically shows up in the fall and winter months, however, the spot can provide great waves yearround.
Morro Bay provides surfers with convenience and accessibility. The spot is a mere 18 minutes from Cal Poly to the beach. With multiple free parking lots, Morro Rock tends to bring in a crowd. If you are looking for a more secluded surf, simply walk north on the beach. Great waves break up and down the whole of Morro Strand.
Have friends who are not a fan of surfing? No worries, the expansive beach is walkable for miles at all tides. If you get lucky, you might even see people riding horses on it.
Between the beautiful views, quality surf, and accessibility, Morro Bay provides SLO residents, students, and visitors with opportunities for great adventures and memories.

Farmers’ Market
By Emma Gonosey
For the locals of San Luis Obispo, there is one place to be on a Thursday night: the SLO Farmer’s Market. Once a week, downtown San Luis Obispo completely transforms into blocks of food, drinks, live music and fun. This weekly event becomes the perfect way to explore downtown SLO and observe the locals in their element.
The Farmer’s Market takes up five blocks in downtown San Luis Obispo from 6 p.m. 9 p.m. every Thursday. With live music playing on Higuera Street all walks of SLO life are brought in.
The booths at the Farmer’s Market sell food, drinks, jewelry and other items
handmade by the vendors. One of the best aspects of the Farmer’s Market is the mix of over 100 vendors, as they range from local businesses to residents who have a creative side, making the market extremely unique.
The market also features several local bands playing live music in the street. This gives an overall good feeling to the market as a whole and gives local bands the chance to play for a live audience.
While most attendees choose to walk through the blocked-off streets of downtown, many Farmer’s Market enthusiasts bring their own chairs to sit
BEST BEACH
Avila Beach
By Romina Montemurro
The Central Coast is blessed with gorgeous beaches, none better for whale watching, paddle boarding, or sunset-watching than Avila, home of the Point San Luis Lighthouse. With plenty of shops and activities, Avila is a mustvisit on your upcoming weekend plans. On land, you can take a bike ride down the Bob Jones Trail for three miles of stunning Avila sights.
If you want to venture into the aquatic world, drop by the aquarium to see some sealife, or book a kayak or boat charter trip and see them up close and personal
in their natural habitat. Avila is known for its calm waters, which makes it perfect for swimming, paddling, or a romantic walk along the shore.
On a casual day with your friends, take a walk down the pier and relax as you whale watch; there’s no better spot to catch a glimpse of gray and humpback whales. Then go down to the shore and dig your toes in the sand, catching some rays as the sun goes down. If you’re feeling hungry, grab some lunch at Custom House or Ocean Grill and dig into some seafood, as fresh as it gets. Avila

BEST NIGHT TIME ACTIVITY
Farmer’s Market
By Tori Gordon
What would SLO be without its infamous Thursday night Farmer’s Market? Every Thursday night at 6 p.m., the streets of downtown are sure to be packed and lined with over 100 unique vendors. There are vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. You will also find local organizations promoting the work they create. The overall ambiance of the market is lively and uplifting, making it the perfect setting to hang out with friends and family.
One of the most appealing aspects of the farmers market is the entertainment. Every week there is a rotation of artists and performers that bring something new and exciting to the table. There are always crowds gathered around a given performer showing their support and sometimes even joining in on the act and dancing along.

BEST ALTERNATIVE LIBRARY SPOT
The UU
By Xiomara Lopez
You might be familiar with the University Union as the place of departments, events, ASI and more but recently the UU has served as a go-to study spot for students. With the Kennedy Library under construction, students have been looking for alternative study spots, especially during midterms and finals season.
The UU has what students need with food and refreshments available on the first floor with Starbucks indoors and Mustang Station and Red Radish right outside. There are also numerous seating options, stools and cushioned chairs provide seating to work individually or
to collaborate on group projects. Since studying has no time frame, the second floor of the UU is open 24/7, though there are select days on which this differs, to plan and know ahead of time, the hours are available online at www.asi.calpoly. edu/facilities/facility-hours/.
Wondering if some of the resources available in the library continue to be available? The UU has it covered. Printers are available on the second floor with designated quiet rooms in the Chandler and San Luis Lounge along with computers from the library available for use in the San Luis Lounge. While there

BEST PICNIC SPOT
Shell Beach
By Sydnie Bierma
While Avila Beach is one of the most popular places to spend a beach day, driving 10 minutes further south offers the perfect opportunity for a beachside picnic. Located between Avila Beach and Pismo, Shell Beach is much more secluded and is the perfect place for a picnic with a friend or loved one. Many students pack up a bag with food from their fridge or stop by Trader Joe’s to grab some snacks. If you have a car, freshmen even have the option to bring food from Vista Grande or another oncampus option. Shell Beach has a couple of different access points off N Silver
Shoals Dr., Searidge Ct., or Beachcomber Dr. The benefit of picnicking at Shell Beach is all of the different options for setting up a picnic. Whether you’re higher up on the bluff in the grass or on the actual beach itself there’s plenty of space. The beach is rocky which provides a flatter surface to set food on and has plenty of alcoves to tuck yourself away from the wind.
The one downside of picnicking on the beach itself is the possibility of a high tide. When the tide is high, Shell Beach doesn’t have much of a beach to sit
BEST OFF CAMOUS STUDY SPOT
Nautical Bean
By Grace Bender
If you follow the sound of espresso machines and good music, odds are you’ll end up at Nautical Bean. As you walk in and look to your right, David Bowie might be staring at you, alongside other notable paintings, and a TV playing Cartoon Network. Moving through the coffee shop, you can choose to sit down next to a familiar peer, a knight statue with a stormtrooper helmet, or three different arcade games. No matter the choice you make, it will be the right one.
Established in 1998, Nautical Bean started its coffee shop journey in Shell Beach and moved to its iconic home
on Parker St in San Luis Obispo in 2018. It is most notable for its 1980s and 90s pop-culture ambiance, which creates a safe and inviting space for all identities. The walls are decorated with stickers, skateboards, paintings of all genres, and other paraphernalia that celebrate its values as an establishment.
There is always a seat waiting for a customer in one of the nooks of the coffee shop. Whether it’s a booth for a group project or a single table for an individual, there are plenty of inviting pieces of mismatched furniture for students to use. In case there is a

BEST HIKE
Bishop Peak
By Brianna Thompson
Astunning volcanic plug nestled within oak woodland, sage scrub, and chaparral, lies Bishop Peak an iconic landmark of San Luis Obispo. Named after its homage, “Obispo,” the Spanish word for Bishop, is known for hiking, bouldering, and breathtaking views of San Luis Obispo County. Rising 1,559 feet above the sea, Bishop Peak is an accomplishing summit offering 360-degree views of San Luis Obispo. For hikers, several trailheads lead to the top, depending on your preferred intensity of the hike. The Patricia Drive route offers a seasonal cattle pond, a shaded forest, and an open chaparral on the south side, while the Highland Drive trailhead offers
a more technical route, involving more steep and rocky challenges in the broad, shadeless expanse.
Along with diverse hiking trails, the peak also offers multiple areas for bouldering or rock climbing. As a 20 million-year-old volcanic plug, and one of the nine mirror sisters, the rock features very uniform characteristics, with some cracks, mostly face, and a lot of slabs, and is known as the most popular local cragging spot in the county. Various climbing styles such as bouldering, sport, trad, and mixed are available.
Whether you are hiking, biking, or climbing to the top the views from the peak are breathtaking, featuring sights from as far as Pismo Beach to Morro Bay.
BEST WOWIE ACTIVITY
Beach Bonfire
By Tori Gordon
SLO and the central coast are widely recognized for their beautiful outdoors, especially the beaches. Many people have been to the beach, but having a bonfire alongside the oceannow that’s a completely different ball game. Being such a unique and exciting endeavor, these beach bonfires are one of the most popular outings that the freshman engage in during WOW week. These bonfires, which are quite literally providing light and warmth, are the perfect way to share stories and foster stronger connections between the freshmen. The purpose of WOW week
is to allow the freshmen some time to meet some familiar faces and make the transition to college a little smoother before starting classes. These bonfires can play a vital role in lots of their firstweek experiences at Cal Poly because of the shared experience it creates between the group.
Not only do these bonfires create a comforting environment, but they also usually have something sweet in store for the freshmen- that being smores. Roasting marshmallows by the fire and pairing it with chocolate and graham crackers is the ultimate dream dessert.
On a cloudy day, feel immersed in the clouds as they surround the mountain with a golden light and crisp air. For plant enthusiasts, this is a perfect hike to look at some coast live oaks, and bay trees, as well as sagebrush, coyote bush, and monkeyflower. Birdwatching is another common activity that takes place on the rock, so keep an eye out for jays, and passerine birds, as well as golden eagles, bald eagles, owls, and vultures.
Bishops Peak offers so much to the San Luis Obispo community and should be honored and respected so make sure to keep the trails clean and pick up after your dogs!
Grover Beach, located nearly 15 minutes from campus, is the go-to spot for holding bonfires and even after WOW week, you will surely run into college students sitting around the bonfire.

BEST SUNSET SPOT
Perfumo Canyon
By Sydnie Bierma
Located in the Irish Hills, Prefumo Canyon sits above the City of San Luis Obispo and provides stellar views of the surrounding hills and ocean. The drive up to Prefumo Canyon is just as scenic as the actual viewpoint itself. It can be accessed through Sea Canyon Rd. or the more common route off Los Osos Valley Rd. After turning onto Prefumo Canyon Rd. from Los Osos Valley Rd. you drive through a neighborhood before emerging into a heavily forested area and drive along Prefumo Creek. The smell of eucalyptus becomes apparent within the first mile of the over four-mile drive to the top.
As you drive further up the windier the road gets and the further away from the city you feel. The road provides a perfect opportunity to roll down your car windows and take in the fresh ocean breeze. From the top, you can see all the way to Morro Bay and gain access to an incredible view of Morro Rock. You’re also able to see the whole length of Cuesta Ridge from the top. Be prepared for the temperature to drop nearly 10 degrees from what it is down in the city. The top of the hills are pasture-like and a great place for you and your friends to frolic while the sun goes down. During the
winter season viewing the sunset can be just as enjoyable from the warmth of your car. Even better is to bring a nice warm meal up with you and an extra blanket.

BEST STUDENT CELEBRATION
St. Fratty’s
By Ava Baker
Get ready to immerse yourself in the vibrant sea of green as the highly anticipated St.Fratty’s Day celebrations kick off around the Cal Poly campus. The clock strikes 3:17 a.m., marking the beginning of a daylong extravaganza that sees students spilling onto the streets, converging in backyards, and climbing rooftops of surrounding houses. It’s a spectacle that transforms the usually studious atmosphere into a kaleidoscope of laughter, lively music, and red solo cups.
St.Fratty’s Day is renowned to be the highlight of the student calendar here at Cal Poly. The student-led festivities
began in 2009 by a fellow Cal Poly student who had dreams of creating an event that brought together all types of students around campus to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day together. St.Fratty’s is now a cornerstone of the university experience.
Despite Cal Poly not holding the official title of a “party school,” St.Fratty’s Day proves that this university knows how to throw an unforgettable celebration. The event captures the essence of camaraderie, breaking down barriers between different student groups, and creating a sense of unity beyond the academic confines of campus life.
BEST CAL POLY CLASS
Beekeeping
By Graciana Ratto
Before every Fall and Spring quarter, students rush to log onto their Schedule Builder to add Beekeeping as a class for good reason. With only 48 seats available each quarter, the class is very hard to come by due to such high demands. Taught by Jeremy Rose and Patrick Frazier, students of all ages and majors swarm to register for the class.
Appealing to even those with a fear of bees, students sign up to gain more knowledge and respect for the bees and what they do for the environment. Students can see how
gentle the bees are and therefore become less fearful of them.
During the lab section, students get to come to class and interact with live bees. Of course, with the right protection suits on, students can get a hands-on learning experience.
Cal Poly has offered a Beekeeping program in one way or another since the 1950s. Students can learn how important it is to keep bees alive and thriving. Students can learn by doing - from taking care of the hives to the production

BEST THRIFT STORE
Goodwill Bins
By Sydnie Bierma
San Luis Obispo County is widely known for its thrifting community. Streets downtown are home to more upscale stores such as Calico and Fred and Bettys. While these stores provide more curated items, the art of “digging through bins,” is more entertaining for many.
Harper Chapman-Robbins, Soil Science sophomore is a frequent thrifter. “The main draw to go to the bins is the fact that the clothes are priced by weight,” Chapman-Robbins said. The Goodwill Bins, otherwise known as the Goodwill Outlets are where clothes from regular
Goodwill locations are taken after not selling in-store. Because items are priced by weight, you’re able to get a lot more items for a lot less money than you’d spend at a normal thrift store. You can get a pound of clothes for under $4. Another added benefit of going to the bins is “the wide selection of clothes that are available,” Chapman-Robbins said. It’s a lot more unique than going to a store that already has people sort out the items. You can find anywhere from new going-out clothes to an old vintage jacket. It’s also a budget-conscious place to go shopping for your home. The bins

The weekly farmer’s market in SLO gives people a new tradition and a new way to interact with farmers and small businesses. California Sweet Roasted Corn is characterized by a line of people awaiting their hot-off-the-grill cob of corn. Around the booth, people can be seen happily snacking on an ear as they walk by other vendors.
The most special part about California Sweet Roasted Corn is, well, the grilled sweet corn and the various options they provide customers with to customize it however they want. They offer pepper, among other spices, and plenty of better
to douse the corn in. Seeing people flock to the booth for a simple starchy vegetable weirdly brings a fond sense of community to the farmer’s market. It makes perfect sense that Cal Poly students love California Sweet Corn, it is the perfect vessel for all of your favorite things. And above all else, it’s such a wonderful treat.
