ith the unique environment of the Central Coast, a communitycentered town and cutting-edge learning facilities, San Luis Obispo has everything you need to thrive as a Cal Poly student. When I first came to tour Cal Poly, I had never really experienced the Central Coast before, and honestly knew close to nothing about San Luis Obispo. Within the past four years though, San Luis Obispo has become one of my favorite places in the world, and it now holds a special place in my heart. Cheesy as it may sound, as a senior entering my last quarter of college, I am truly so fond of this beautiful coastal gem of a town and can’t imagine having experienced college anywhere else.
Of course, the physical location of Cal Poly can’t be beat, with gorgeous coastal mountains, charming beach towns and its pleasant Mediterranean climate. But more than that, San Luis Obispo has won my heart with its wonderful community and local . From the Thursday night farmers markets to bike nights to the “tri-tip challenge,” San Luis Obispo is rich with fun, social traditions that will make your college experience unique. Whether you are a beach-lover, a coffee connoisseur or an indy audiofile, there is a community here for you. I hope this edition opens your eyes to the hidden wonders of San Luis Obispo and all of the opportunities there are for you here.

SLO’s Best Coffee Places To Study At By Lauren Boyer
Skipper’s Skipper’s Brew, located on Monterey Street, has lots of indoor and outdoor tables to study at. The larger picnic tables outside allow you to study with friends and enjoy the outdoors. The floor to ceiling windows allow you to people-watch while you take study breaks.
Field Day Coffee Field Day is located across the street from Skipper’s and is very open and a relaxing place to study at. The bushes in front offer a secluded environment for some more concentrated studying.
Scout Coffee If you’re lucky enough to find seating, studying at any of the Scout locations guarantees productivity. The farmhouse-chic ambiance is such a motivator to work hard.

Kreuzberg A big reason Kreuzberg is such a great place to study is the quality of food it offers all day. Pick up one of their breakfast burritos and snag a table outside on Higuera Street. There’s lots of shade, so it’s nice to work there on a sunny day.
SloDoCo They do sell coffee so technically SloDoCo can be considered a coffee place. SloDoCo is great for late-night studying and has lots of donuts to serve as an incentive to get your work done.
“ The larger picnic tables outside allow you to study with friends and enjoy the outdoors. ”

Best Beginner Surf Spots in SLO By Amanda Wernik
A
s temperatures begin to warm up in sunny San Luis Obispo, now is as good a time as any to dip your toes into the exciting world of surfing. The following surf spots offer ideal conditions for local beginners to learn. Let’s duck-dive right in!
Morro Rock Morro Rock is a picturesque location with gentle waves that are perfect for new surfers. The waves crash softly, making them fairly easy to stand up on. Additionally, Morro has a sand bottom, which is optimal for newer surfers. However, Morro tends to consistently have colder waters than Pismo or Avila.
Pismo Beach Pismo beach, another popular destination for beginner surfers, can be a tad more challenging than Morro. Since the waves are slightly choppier, they can be more difficult to stand up on. Pismo, like Morro, has a safe sand-bottom.
Avila Avila is another good beginner surf spot because the waves remain consistently small. However, the waters can be rougher than in Morro or Pismo. Because surf conditions fluctuate day-to-day, beginners are advised to check surf reports before surfing at the aforementioned locations. Reading up on basic surf etiquette beforehand is also recommended, in order to avoid any potential collisions or accidents involving other surfers. That being said, overthinking too much can defeat the purpose of surfing, which is to destress and have fun. Surf’s up, kooks!

Student Apartments around SLO By: Sophia Lincoln
I
t’s that time of year again when returning mustangs begin scrambling to find a living situation for next year. When deciding on housing, there are a number of different aspects to consider -location, price, space -- the list goes on. The good news is that San Luis Obispo is host to a wide range of apartments built specifically for students. Here are a few options to consider:
Mustang Village Mustang Village is very popular among Mustangs due to its close proximity to campus, affordable price and social atmosphere. Located just behind the train tracks off of Foothill Boulevard, the living complex is walking-distance to campus, as well as to the various
grocery stores and restaurants lining Foothill Boulevard. Mustang village offers a few different floor plans and is much more affordable than other real estate in San Luis Obispo. Made clear by its name, Mustang Village caters to Cal Poly students as its main tenant group, fostering a fun and studious community.

The Summit SLO
The Academy Poly Canyon Palomar Village
The Summit SLO is San Luis Obispo’s newest housing option for Cal Poly and Cuesta College students. It is located on the corner of East Foothill Boulevard and North Chorro Street, on the same block as various popular shops and eateries including Scout’s Coffee and Taqueria Santa Cruz. While it is currently still under construction, the Summit SLO is already accepting leasing applications. According to the Summit SLO’s website, it will also host its own ground-floor retail. Other amenities will include a fitness center, study rooms and a rooftop lounge. There are four different apartment-style housing options to choose from, all of which are fully furnished. More information and pricing can be found online at summitslo.com.
The Academy on Palomar Street is owned by the same company that owns the Academy on Chorro Street but there are a few main distinctions that make for a different experience at each one. The Academy Palomar is quite similar to the Academy Chorro in its lush amenities and strong community aspect, but unlike the Academy Chorro, which is made up of apartments, the Academy Palomar is made up of eight to ten person “cottages,” which are essentially two story houses with separate first and second floors -- the four or five people living on the first floor will share a kitchen, living room and two bathrooms, all of which are disconnected from the second floor which contains the same floor plan.
“Amenities will include a fitness center, study rooms and a rooftop lounge.”
The cottages create a more private atmosphere for students wanting to live in an environment similar to that of a house but also having access to state-of-the-art communal amenities and community activities. One drawback of living at the Academy Palomar is that it is not as close to campus as some of the other housing options mentioned. It is located on Palomar Street just a little ways behind SLODoCo, slightly farther from campus than the apartment complexes located on Foothill Boulevard.

Poly Canyon Village is a great option for students who find themselves on campus more often than not -- if you are frequently studying in the library or are in a major that requires constant work in studios or other classes on campus, Poly Canyon Village could be a great choice for you. While its location on campus offers convenience for those frequently accessing campus resources, Poly Canyon Village is also far enough away from the center of campus that it creates a much quieter and very studious environment for students to thrive. It is located farther out by the Equine Center near the mountains in the back of campus. Similarly to dorm life, Poly Canyon Village provides community areas and amenities including a pool, beach volleyball courts, an exercise room and more. It also features different dining areas right outside your door including Einstein’s Bagels and Village Market. Poly Canyon Village is a great bonus of Cal Poly’s campus and provides just about everything necessary for thriving college students all together in one tidy package. The nine-month lease is also ideal for students not planning to stay in San Luis Obispo over the summer.

Best Pizza Places In SLO Rated By Carter Herrera
L
iving on campus can make dining very repetitive if you rely mostly on on-campus venues. This is especially true when it comes to pizza. Though Mustang Station is in a very convenient location, the best pizza is definitely located off campus.
1. Gino’s Pizza Last Sunday, I went to Gino’s Pizza which is located about a mile away from campus on Monterey Street. I was there to watch the NFC championship game between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers with my roommates. Even though the team I wanted to win ended up losing a pretty close game, I still left the restaurant very happy because of how good the pizza was. The reason that I think this is one of the best pizza options for students comes down to quality and affordability. Cal Poly Students can also receive a 10% discount by using code “Mustang” when ordering.
2. Woodstock’s WoodPizza stock’s Pizza Another pizza place I tried recently was Woodstock’s Pizza, which is located on Higuera Street. Although it was more expensive than Gino’s, the quality of the food was very good. Woodstock’s also has fun events such as trivia night every Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Similar to Gino’s, Woodstock’s also has a discount for students. Using the code “student,” you can receive $6 off of your order – just remember to bring your Cal Poly ID for proof. Other good deals include the “late night” discount, where you can purchase a large one-topping pizza for just $16.99 if you get it after 10 p.m., and for students 21 and older, enjoy Woodstock’s “Pint Night” on week nights featuring $9 pitchers of beer starting at 9 p.m.

3. Blaze, Domino’s and Hearth Some other pizza options here in San Luis Obispo include Blaze Pizza, Domino’s and Hearth, which is located on campus. Domino’s is great if you are looking for something affordable and filling and Blaze offers some good thincrust pizza. Hearth also offers the convenience of being on campus, although one downside is it does not offer full-sized pizza pies.

Best Spots for Live Local Bands and Artists By Amanda Wernik
I
n 2020, COVID-19 sent live music to a grinding halt worldwide. However, in the aftermath of this hiatus, something remarkable happened to the San Luis Obispo local music scene. COVID-19 wiped the slate clean, paving the way for a new wave of local talents to emerge. Venues that previously only hosted big acts are now granting local bands a chance to shine. As the frontwoman of one of these bands (Kiwi Kannibal), I will shed my insight on the best places to enjoy San Luis Obispo’s thriving newfound local music scene.
Barrelhouse Brewing SLO (21+) In the heart of downtown SLO, this relatively new venue has become a prime spot for music lovers. A staircase leads to a cozy yet spacious downstairs taproom, where visitors can enjoy fresh beer and live local music performances.
