TREAT YOURSELF 2021

DITOR’S OTE SOPHIE LINCOLN SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR

As we enter the second half of what is many of our first quarter back in person since the pandemic, lots of students are probably feeling a mix of emotions. All of a sudden, most social activities are back, along with full days of in-person classes on campus, midterms and lots of face-to-face interaction. While it is exciting to once again have a normal, hectic college life, it’s also important to realize that your mind and body is not necessarily used to this after the past year of lockdown, and sometimes you need to take a break and just treat yourself. In this special edition, you’ll find various ways to treat your mind and body in San Luis Obispo, along with advice from seniors and various resources available to you on and off campus. Treating yourself can come in many forms, from getting a massage or visiting some hot springs to exploring the natural wilderness of the Central Coast to enjoying some comfort food from some of the best local eateries. I hope that this edition will help students navigate the rest of this quarter, and serve as a reminder to take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily college life to really take care of yourself and make sure you are also having fun.

BY TESSA HUGHES

I

In all honesty, there is nothing that is 100% easy about freshman year of college. Everything from planning and taking college classes for the first time, to being away from home, making new friends, experiencing a new type of independence and having to figure things out for yourself presents their own sets of challenges

and can be scary. However, as a seasoned senior, here are some tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years to ease the transition. Your first quarter at Cal Poly, go talk to both your college and academic advisor! You can identify goals for yourself, in terms of what classes you want to take, what minors you might be interested in, what concentration path you want to follow, etc. Nothing that is talked about here is set in stone, but having some kind of plan can make the next four years seem less daunting. The quarter system itself is a beast on its own, as it is fast paced and college classes are by nature more difficult than high school courses. To juggle this, just remember to schedule time into

your calendar specifically to complete homework and study. Also, remove yourself from distracting situations when you do this in order to fully dedicate yourself to your work. This will help you stay on top of your homework and academic responsibilities because you’ll know when you will get the work done, versus just pushing it off and then rushing at the last minute because you thought it wouldn’t take as long as it did. Making new friends is also something most students haven’t necessarily had to do since high school, but for many it's middle school or elementary school. Especially, coming out of the pandemic, remembering how to be in social settings is bizarre. This is one of the areas where

COLLEGE IS HARD AND EVEN IF IT SEEMS LIKE OTHERS ARE NAVIGATING IT EASILY, TRUST ME — THEY’RE NOT.

you will be pushed out of your comfort zone the most, but it will have the biggest pay off. Join that club that matches your interest, invite someone you think you may get along with to get coffee to just chat, form study groups with people in your class (friends and connections in your major are bigger than you know); trust me, everyone is in the same boat as you are. Not only is there the challenge of creating new relationships, but being away from home and maintaining old ones is new terrain as well. My favorite method has been video and phone calls. I have been able to keep in touch with my parents and become even closer with my old friends through randomly calling them.

If you like facetime, you still get that face to face element in some regard and calls are also easy to do in between classes! While walking back to your dorm or if you have a 15 minute gap between classes, this is the perfect way to easily catch up with those loved ones you no longer see consistently. College is hard and even if it seems like others are navigating it easily, trust me — they’re not. Everyone is figuring out their own challenges, so you are not alone and there are usually others willing to help you out if you just ask!

01

BLACK SHEEP MAC ‘N’ CHEESE

Mac ‘n’ cheese is literally one of the most well-known and acknowledged comfort foods of all time. Black Sheep’s mac ‘n’ cheese is something they are known for, and it has some of the best options locally for it! From their create your own to their pre-crafted offerings, they have you covered.

One of the hardest parts about being away from home is often the lack of home cooked meals and comfort food available. However, a part of taking care of yourself is to eat well and to eat food that makes you feel good. There are plenty of places in San Luis Obispo that offer peak comfort through their meals listed here:

02

TAQUERIA SANTA CRUZ

One of the nicer restaurants that is open late in the area, Taqueria Santa Cruz is a local favorite for Mexican food. From their burritos to tacos, they serve comfort Mexican food and have some of the best nachos in the city, which is always a quality go-to.

03

FIRESTONE’S TRI TIP Everyone KNOWS Firestone for their tri-tip sandwiches, and for good reason. It is tender and tastes amazing with the toasted butter roll — mouths water just thinking about it. Order extra barbeque sauce to slather on (Firestone’s is *chef’s kiss*) and a side of their seasoned fries to complete the meal.

04

SPLASH CLAM CHOWDER AND BREAD BOWL Soup, like mac ‘n’ cheese, is a class comfort food and Splash’s clam chowder is next level. Being so close to the coast, you know it is always fresh and eating it out of a warm bread bowl is one of the best pairings.

Pro tip: order the seafood topping for the greatest meal at Splash

05

LATE NIGHT TACO BELL Taco Bell hits differently at night and their nacho cheese slathered on anything makes it the ULTIMATE comfort food. From their burritos to their nachos to their tacos, everything tastes amazing and is definitely the most affordable option on this list.

MADONNA CAKE

ZIGGY’S

TREAT YOURSELF 2021

You can’t think of comfort without factoring in dessert! Madonna Inn’s bakery does a great job by offering huge slices of cake that can easily feed three to four people until they are full. There is a wide range of flavors, so there’s a slice for everyone that will leave them satisfied and smiling.

Who knew vegan food could taste so good? Vegans… but now everyone else does too, with Ziggy’s menu that has great options for vegan burgers, tacos, milkshakes and fries! They even have “Dirty Fries,” which are similar to In-nOut’s animal fries, a staple here in California.

A PART OF TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF IS TO EAT WELL AND TO EAT FOOD THAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD.

SLOCO HEALTH + WELLNESS BY TESSA HUGHES | SPONSORED BY SLOCO HEALTH+WELLNESS

P

Plants fill the space and fun pop music fills the air as guests enter Sloco Health + Wellness, and they already feel at home. That is the goal. Sloco is a holistically based health and wellness experience that considers itself San Luis Obispo’s destination for massage and wellness. There are a lot of reasons why Sloco is different from other spa experiences in San Luis Obispo including the vibe of the shop, its emphasis on sustainability and the specific services offered. This is why the business doesn’t even necessarily consider itself a spa, but rather a holistic experience. Sloco maintains a very friendly, warm, vibrant, bubbly, welcoming vibe for all of its guests. While most spas keep earth tones and calm vibes, Sloco plays around with colors and aims to be upbeat as a way to make everyone consider the business as a second home. They want to assert the fact that they are for everyone, not an elite few. At Sloco, staff work hard to emphasize that everyone is a guest, rather than a customer. Sloco is a family- and teambased organization that works to eliminate the competitive culture sometimes present at other

health and wellness massage places and spas. Then, from the ground up, Sloco was built in a way that centered around being sustainable. From the cork floors to its nontoxic paint and cleaning products, everything is eco-friendly. They even have a large HVAC system to purify the air, and a large reason they have so many plants is for the air as well! Guilt-free self-care is Sloco’s mission, along with a routine base initiative, which is why there are membership options for their guests. There are three different membership options to cater to every person’s needs. By offering memberships, Sloco aims to become a part of its guests’ daily lives. All of its express services — normatec compression therapy, ear seeds, cryotherapy, somadome meditation, the dry salt chamber, the red light bed and sauna — can be included in the memberships, with the exception of Cryo T-Shock and massages. Cryotherapy is Sloco’s most popular service and targets the whole body, mental and physical health. It helps with any inflammation and is a service that is most beneficial when used routinely. Stepping into the extremely cold walk-in freezer is a unique experience that leaves guests feeling revitalized and relaxed. Plus, guests receive a pair of headphones so you can jam out to any song of choice while getting your treatment. It’s like a silent disco! The Normatec compression therapy pairs nicely after cryotherapy and is a series of squeezing and releasing either the legs, hips or arms. It is great for athletes and

helps with muscle recovery. The ‘ear seeds’ are another unique service offered at Sloco, which involves the placing of metallic ear seeds on specific meridians on the ear to target specific issues like stress and anxiety. This is also known as acupressure or reflexology for the ear. Then, a Somadome meditation pod is used to put guests drop deeper into meditation using binaural beats. This is partnered with color and energy therapy so that guests can meditate in a safe space. Somadome meditation is great for people who struggle with traditional meditation. Sloco’s dry salt chamber is another unique experience that offers immediate relief to guests dealing with sinus congestion and is offered with a paired guided breathwork. Sloco’s red light therapy bed really drives home the holistic experience. It increases cellular health, which is the basis for all health, so every guest leaves with a different benefit. What makes red-light therapy different from a tanning bed is the red, green and infrared lights used while experiencing it. Finally, there are Sloco’s massages. While these are not included in its memberships, the massages are still worth it because they are personalized. They require a consultation beforehand so you can go in and tell your massage therapist exactly what you’re looking for. As a holistic health and wellness experience, Sloco really has everything a guest could want to ensure a quality time.

TREAT YOURSELF WITH THESE

natural comforts in SLO BY TESSA HUGHES

S

San Luis Obispo is known for its natural beauty. From its hikes to its beaches to its scenic views, the area has it all, and attending any of these various spots can serve as one of the best ways to mentally check-out. Below is a list of some of the best and most relaxing natural comforts in San Luis Obispo County:

01

AVILA HOT SPRINGS Talk about a go-to! These hot springs are literally the definition of relaxing, while being equal parts affordable and accessible. Located right off the freeway, it is a short drive from Cal Poly and is relatively inexpensive, especially if you go at night, as they reduce the price then. According to their website, the flow of their stream has remained constant for over 100 years and remains at a 104 degree temperature. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting back in the hot springs surrounded by San Luis Obispo’s natural beauty and brush, staring up at the night sky. The only downside is you will leave smelling like sulfur!

02

TERRACE HILL Terrace Hill is arguably the best lookout point in the city. Located on Bishop Street, the trailhead has free parking. The view is a short but steep walk from the road to the flat hilltop that provides gorgeous scenic views of all of San Luis Obispo. It is most popular at sunset for obvious reasons, and you can see everything from the fields out near the airport to the peaks behind Cal Poly’s campus. It makes a great spot for an afternoon picnic, a sunset photoshoot or for nighttime stargazing.

03

MONTANA DEL ORO BLUFF TRAIL The Bluff Trail over in Montana Del Oro is more of a nature walk than a hike. It is located right along the cliffs and provides some of the best views of the ocean, proving why the Central Coast is one of the most beautiful spots in the world. From sweeping trees to picturesque cliffs and insane rock formations to the beach, Bluff Trail has it all. The walk itself is pretty flat and provides many natural turning points, lookout benches and overall, is pretty painless. The sound of the waves crashing here is literally what sound machines wish they could be, and how could you be more comforted then that?

04

MORRO BAY BEACH Morro Bay is traditionally regarded as one of the more underwhelming beaches in the area, but its simplicity is honestly overlooked. It is so serene to be pocketed in the bay and it is such a large beach. It is rarely busy, which makes it all that much more calming. There is a nice little walk around the rock, and the beach is perfect to stroll down or set up camp for the day!

VARIOUS SPOTS CAN SERVE AS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO MENTALLY CHECK-OUT.

HOW TO: DE-STRESS DURING MIDTERMS

M

BY TESSA HUGHES

Midterms and finals always tend to sneak up on you, despite often being labeled on the syllabus you’re given week one. They can cause a lot of stress that seems unmanageable, so below is a list of ways to try to curb the pre- and post-exam anxiety.

01

GET ARTSY Check out of your school work by expressing yourself through various art mediums. Hit up the dollar store for some cheap canvases, paints and additional materials, and go out to your favorite spot in nature. Whether it be the gorgeous, sunset-kissed Montana De Oro dunes or the tree houses and swings on the Madonna Mountain trail, these spots are peaceful and picturesque. They could either inspire the art you sought to create or serve as the perfect setting to just check out while you’re doing your thing. Now, if you are craving a different type of creative outlet or something more guided, check out one of the many classes the ASI Craft Center offers to try your hand at

everything from ceramics and flameworking to jewelry smithing and skateboard making.

02 HIKE

If San Luis Obispo is known for anything, it's their various hiking trails and opportunities. For students living on campus, there are three great hikes right at your fingertips. First, there is the ‘P’ for a short and sweet hike with a great view. Then, there is Architecture Graveyard, which is lower exertion, a little longer and has fun, creative places to explore. For a longer, more challenging hike with amazing views, go past Architecture Graveyard and head on up to the Serenity Swing.

Students on and off campus can complete the ‘Tri-Tip Challenge,’ a Cal Poly student tradition that involves hiking three peaks, or ‘tips’: the ‘P,’ Bishop’s Peak and Cerro San Luis (commonly known as Madonna Mountain), after which you can reward yourself with a tri-tip sandwich from Firestone. You can also practice for the challenge by hiking any of the three peaks individually. Madonna Mountain has some fun swings and tree houses along the way, and Bishop’s also has rock-climbing. If you’re up for a small drive, head south to Pismo Preserve, where there are multiple trails of varying levels of difficulty, all of which provide views of the ocean. Additionally, there is Montana Del Oro Bluff Trail, which is less of a hike and more of a nature walk in one of the most beautiful places on the Central Coast. No matter which hike you choose, you can’t go wrong, and exercise releases endorphins which can alleviate stress and boost your mood!

TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO BRING THEIR FAVORITE SNACKS AND JUST RELAX.

03

YOGA On that note, another great way to exercise to take your mind off of midterms is through yoga! This is another way to center and distract yourself. There are many yoga centers across San Luis Obispo, or you could go outside and follow a YouTube tutorial yourself if you prefer a more personal and private workout. The Cal Poly Rec Center also offers various yoga classes that target both mind and body, and they have both in person and virtual options.

04

MOVIE/GAME NIGHT During midterm season, it is easy to forget to be social and check in with your friends. Chances are, they are in the same boat as you and want a break! Invite them over, encourage them to bring their favorite games and get ready for a night filled with laughter, a little competition and a lot of fun. It is a great way to take your mind off of school, recharge your social battery and still keep yourself engaged. If you want something even more lowkey, skip the games entirely and just pop on a movie. Grab your favorite candy, pop that popcorn and tell your friends to bring their favorite snacks and just relax. Netflix and Hulu have been making some great additions lately and there is definitely something for everyone.

Guest soloist TANYA GABRIELIAN, hailed by the London Times as “a pianist of powerful physical and imaginative muscle,” will perform Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

Gabrielian is passionate about community engagement, education and activism through art. She has collaborated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness in programs highlighting the stigma around mental health issues, and with other artists in multidisciplinary projects that have earned her international recognition. The program will feature composers with mental illness: Sergei Rachmaninoff, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Robert Schumann, in addition to Shostakovich.

CAL POLY SYMPHONY SPOTLIGHTS MENTAL HEALTH BY TORSTEIN RHEN | SPONSORED BY CAL POLY MUSIC DEPARTMENT

O

n December 3, the Cal Poly Symphony will welcome guest soloist Tanya Gabrielian for a night of classical music written by composers who had mental illness. The night comes in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Health which is the largest mental health support organization in the country. Gabrielian has performed as a pianist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. She says part of the point of the show is to show how you can still create beauty in the world regardless of your circumstances. One example

of this is Sergei Rachmaninoff, who composed the Vocalise that will be performed. Rachmaninoff was a Soviet composer who lived from 1873 to 1943 and dealt with depression over the course of his life. He spent much of his life going between the hospital and rehabilitation, and even dedicated a piano concerto to his therapist. Mental health has long been an under-discussed issue in classical music. Even one of the most famous composers to ever live, Beethoven, had Bipolar Disorder; a fact hidden by his biographer who destroyed more than a hundred of Beethoven's books because of their references to his mental health. The Fall concert celebrates the impact people

with mental illnesses can have on the world. Artwork from local members of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will be on display and tickets will be given to the organization. On Thursday, December 2, a music and advocacy presentation will be given by Gabrielian in the Davidson Music Center free of charge. Then, on Friday, December 3, the concert Gabrielian Plays Shostakovich will be performed in the Performing Arts Center for $15 to $20 for general admission and $10 for students. Masks are required along with proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test.
