WELCOME

Greetings and best wishes from Maldivian! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Maldivian government, valued partners and our beloved customers for making our journey a success for the last 16 years of service. Without their unwavering support and confidence in Maldivian, it would be impossible for us to broaden our services successfully within Maldives and beyond. This growth has been possible due to our reliable and steadfast team of experts whose dedication towards achieving their goals prove the success of the company today. Our main focus is to drive our business forward effectively. Maldivian undoubtedly plays a key role in facilitating the growth of the tourism industry which is a huge contribution to the development of the country. In this regard, the national airline operates flights to all airports within the Maldives catering to the resorts around that particular region; and further, provides seaplane transfers to resorts in four Atolls offering a doorstep service to the resorts. Additionally, Maldivian expanded into the Chinese market by operating flights to Chengdu this July making this our sixth point in China. In the coming months we plan to further expand our wings to other cities. We are dedicated to our patrons by means of recognizing their specific needs and transforming them into dependable services in all areas. Our goal is to stay true to our vision, mission and our overall standards of the airline. I would like to thank our Maldivian’s true strength; our staff who work diligently to accomplish our goals. Thank you Abdul Haris Managing Director

estled in Medhufaru lagoon in Noonu Atoll lies the soon-toopen Soneva Jani resort. The opening of Soneva Jani will complete another link in the chain for the Soneva brand which has been operating in the Maldives for more than two decades. Could this be the ultimate Soneva experience? “When we opened Soneva Gili more than 15 years ago, it stood out as a unique and new concept in luxury travel. It is my belief that Soneva Jani is even more revolutionary,’’ said Sonu Shivdasani, founder and CEO of Soneva. Inspired by the Sanskrit word for ‘wisdom’, Soneva Jani encompasses a collection of Water Villas and Island Sanctuaries set within a lagoon of crystal clear waters, fringed by pristine beaches and blanketed in lush tropical greenery. The 5.6 kilometer private lagoon that encircles the island has been deemed as the most terrific feature of the resort. Mr. Shivdasani believes that there are several reasons why Soneva Jani is so special. “At Soneva Gili, guests would often sleep on the top deck so that they could sleep under the stars. At Soneva Jani, most of the master bedrooms in the water villas offer a retractable roof, which slides back to reveal the night sky at the press of a button.’’

16

Maldivian Holidays

Issue 03

Soneva’s latest property is the lowest density resort in the world, just 25 villas in an area stretching over five kilometers. “It is not an island resort. It is a lagoon with five private islands where only one of these will have development. When designing and building Soneva Jani, I was very mindful that when we open, the area should seem as natural and beautiful as the first day I laid eyes on it,’’ he said. Guests will be treated to a unique ‘castaway’ experience within the spacious villas, which feature beautifully designed interiors made from high quality sustainable materials. The spacious villas were designed by Eva Shivdasani, one of Soneva’s co-founders. The resort comprises 24 water villas and one island villa. Additional island villas are planned to open at a later stage. Each water villa has its own private pool and its own stretch of lagoon, while some will feature slides from the top deck directly to the lagoon. It’s hard not to take note of the numerous facilities on offer that include a spa, a dive center, an observatory, a children’s den, organic gardens and an outdoor cinema. The cinema will be the first ‘silent cinema’ in the Maldives, where guests will be given Bluetooth earphones to watch movies so as not to disturb the nesting turtles and other wildlife in the area.

Guests can fill their days with yoga, cycling the island trails, discovering the lagoon’s marine life, dolphin cruises and Robinson Crusoe picnics. Why not have breakfast while watching the sunrise from the sandbank then go explore one of the four private islands encircling the lagoon? Guests will be delighted with the full range of water sports and the number of available activities. For dining, the resort will be offering various destination cuisines and specialty dining experiences. Soneva’s cheese, chocolate, and ice-cream rooms, complimentary for all guests, are sure to prove a much loved feature. In constructing the resort, the company has kept its impact on the environment as low as possible. The pools use seawater with UV filtration and the villas have been built over the sandy floors of the lagoon, so that no damage to any part of the reef is done. Furthermore, solar energy will be a significant source of power at the resort. All waste-water will be collected and treated on-site, and water will also be produced on-site, including drinking water. Soneva’ s Eco Centro Waste-to-Wealth centre will ensure that waste is recycled, while the extensive vegetable garden will give local produce for the restaurants based on organic principles. Committed to leading the hospitality industry with environmentally responsible tourism with annual environmental improvements conducted with the ultimate goal of decarbonizing completely, Soneva is one of the first and best at providing luxury tourism in an environmentally friendly way. Soneva Jani is one of the most highly anticipated resorts of the year and it is not hard to see why. The resort is trying to set a new precedent for others to follow in the hospitality industry for bringing quality and amenities that would amaze their guests and bring their dreams to life while at the same time doing their part to protect the environment.

oday, the island of Gan hosts the second biggest airport in the country. The island now includes an international pilot school, Asian Academy of Aeronautics, as well as a base of operations for the Maldives Defence Force (including sea rescue helicopters). The island’s genesis as an air hub began during the Second World War. The UK’s Royal Air Force (RAF) built the Gan airstrip back in 1941 and operated a base there until 1976. While initially a logistic stopover route to the Far East, the base grew in importance in 1960 when the RAF built a set of radio towers to support communication between air traffic control and airplanes flying over the Indian Ocean. As British bases were being handed over to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) following its independence, the British faced a major communications gap to the Pacific. High-frequency radio signals from the UK could only reach as far as the Maldives so building a relay station there was critical.

“All newcomers to Gan were known as ‘moonies’ and we received the traditional wolf whistles from all and sundry as we entered the sea. I suppose we did look little anaemic...Vilingili was uninhabited but sometimes used as a base for local fishing operations. Some of the sunsets on Gan were real ‘chocolate box’ pictures and many evenings were spent with the camera sitting on a tripod waiting for just the right moment to release the shutter… The fish, oh the fish, there were hundreds of them, every colour and shape you could possibly imagine, all swimming in and out of the coral trees. It really was a wonderland. In the coral, there were deep narrow channels and it was these that were the most interesting. Each was the oceanic equivalent of Oxford Street in the rush hour with brilliantly coloured fish swimming in all directions. Words are totally inadequate to do justice to such a beautiful site. It just has to be seen.” - Michael Butler -

HISTORIC

One of the young airmen deployed to this project was Michael Butler who later published an illuminating chronicle of RAF life on Gan in his book “Return to Gan – An illustrated diary 1960 and 1998”. In those days just arriving on Gan was something of an odyssey. His RAF flight from London took 22 hours to arrive in Gan with refuelling stops in Cyprus, Karachi, and Sri Lanka.

~ Picture hanging in the Equator Village reception presented as a gift to the resort by visiting RAF airmen ~ ~ [photo by Bruce Lynn] ~

“[Taking off from Ceylon] we missed the palms by a whisker. The engine sounded much sweeter as we gained height. We, on the other hand, felt very much colder as we flew between 2,500 and 3,000 feet. No frills on this aircraft like pressurization or heating, and what a noisy aircraft the Bristol Freighter was. Conversation was virtually impossible.”

The RAF legacy lives on today in the form of the Equator Village resort. Although Kurumba was the first resort, the Equator Village can claim to be the first resort structure as the whole property consists of re-purposed RAF buildings.

~ “Return to Gan” by Michal Butler ~

The villas are the bedrooms the airmen lived in and the main building (housing the restaurant, reception and bar) was originally the Officer’s Mess and Officer’s Club. RAF veterans still hold reunions at the resort (one of which prompted Butler’s book).

MALDIVIAN

1. Sponsor of Boduberu

Maldivian is the travel partner for ‘Habeys Boduberu’ the most popular music band in the Maldives. Habeys was the first band from the Maldives to represent the country at the World Music Day, and the first band to launch an album of traditional Boduberu music internationally.

2. Supporter of kid’s football

3. Promoter of Sports Maldivian’s Managing Director, Mr Abdul Haris, accepted a challenge this year to do a training session with the number one tennis player in the Maldives, Abdulla Faaih. The challenge was part of an initiative from the Maldives Olympic Committee, the idea being to increase exposure to sports. Many senior business figures have trained with professional sportspeople under the program.

6. We welcomed the 750,000th visitor

4. Photo flights Maldivian also offers photo flights, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the stunning scenery of the islands and atoll formations from above. You’ll also get the thrill of travelling in a sea plane, of which Maldivian has a fleet of eight.

5. Pokémon are passengers too!

Maldivian is the travel partner for the annual Milo Kids Football Fiesta. The festival helps children showcase their sporting talents, encouraging them to play football. Hundreds of school children from across the Maldives play in the fiesta. Cash prices and book vouchers go to the winner’s school. 26

Pokémon Go isn’t just a game for the land – one of our passengers recently spotted Pidgeotto aboard the plane.

The 750,000th visitor to the Maldives this year arrived on Maldivian airlines flight Q2389 from Xian, China on 7 August. We like to celebrate occasions such as these, and since we’ve increased our flights between Maldives and China we’ve had even more reason to enjoy the company of our Chinese visitors.

9. Competitions and free flights We run regular competitions for visitors to win flights to destinations across the Maldivian network. This summer, one lucky customer, Hussain Shahudhy, even won two complimentary flights to his destination of choice! Others won flights to Colombo, Dhaka, Chennai, Trivandrum and Bangkok. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for future competitions: www.facebook.com/MaldivianAero

10. Shark rescuers

11. Welcoming school children aboard

Maldivian participated in the Youth Challenge 2016, organised by the Youth Ministry. The purpose of the event was to give young people direct contact with many of the companies operating in the Maldives so they could learn about job opportunities and training programs. We brought along everyone from pilots to office staff, and the young really enjoyed talking to them.

8. Assisting volunteers

This summer some of our staff at Maldivian spotted a baby shark with ropes tied around her fin and body. She was badly injured, but after being rescued and cared for she recovered nicely. When she was well again our staff watched with tremendous satisfaction as she swam back into the ocean.

Aeroplane travel isn’t something a lot of children in the Maldives get to experience, but that doesn’t mean they won’t get a chance to enjoy the aircraft. We regularly organise school field trips for children to climb aboard our planes and learn all about how they work.

12. Red Bull events

Maldivian transported a group of Camp Maldives volunteers to Kaadedhdhoo during the summer. Volunteering in collaboration with Huvadhoo Aid, these international visitors helped a number of communities across the Maldives, including a number of schools. The children loved learning from the volunteers. 28

Maldivian provided the transport for a team of Red Bull athletes when they visited the country during the summer. rs. Aminath Najeeba, 59, is one of the only three Maldivians striving to keep the art of weaving the golden lace necklines of the traditional Maldivian lady’s dress known as Dhivehi Libaas alive. She has been practicing the tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation which is a dying art for more than 40 years.

her skills of embroidery to make a living.

Mrs. Najeeba, who lives in Madaveli island of G.dh atoll, south of the country received her first Libaas at the age of 13, as a gift from her mother who taught her the unique and challenging skills needed to make the dresses. In those days Maldives was a poor country, and Aminath would rely on

Traditionally, the Libaas were worn only on special occasions like a wedding ceremony or when in the presence of royalty, representing a celebration of femininity and womanhood. To produce a single dress requires 17 layers of unique embroidery that is best done by hand. Aminath uses

Aminath started selling her dresses to nearby local resorts with the help of her eldest son. The dresses are still used during Maldivian nights and put on for the benefit of tourists, some of whom have visited her to experience the weaving of the glittering patterns.

a system of mathematical codes to weave these beautiful necklines into unique and astonishing patterns. It’s a skill that requires years of dedicated and arduous practice to master. The dress is worn over an underskirt which is distinctive for its black and white stripes. At least one month is required to make a complete Dhivehi Libaas, and the most time consuming element is the hand weaving of the neckline. The fact that there are so few traditional weavers and the long hours needed to produce the dresses mean a genuine product is very expensive to purchase, and although the traditional dresses are still worn today, mostly they are produced by sewing machines.

The colours used in the Dhivehi Libaas throughout history consist of red, white and green which represent the colors of the Maldivian flag. The kings and queens of the past would wear gold and silver thread.

Aminath is teaching these skills to her children and grandchildren and is willing to teach anyone who wants to learn for a fee. it takes a minimum of one week to learn one pattern, which shows just how challenging, a task this is and the grim practice it takes to master the art. Mrs. Aminath Najeeba is one of the few people possessing these rare and disappearing skills and over the years she has carried out a massive effort in protecting and prolonging the art. We wish Aminath all the best and thank her for preserving this valuable tradition for future generations. Words by: Shifa Bushry

he year was 1986. JeanClaude Monachon boarded a Balair flight to the Maldives looking for adventure in warmer climes. In particular, JeanClaude was a scuba diving enthusiast who had heard of the beauty of Maldivian waters. Little could he know that his trip would irrevocably change the face of Maldivian tourism for the better.

Published by MVHOTELS

In his hometown of St. Imier, Switzerland, Jean-Claude owned a beauty salon. His day-to-day routine was one of crimpers and blue eye shadow and colourful 80’s hairstyles. So he was looking forward to a relaxing break at Rihiveli Island Resort that still operates today (by Castaway & Escapes) from South Male’ Atoll. Jean-Claude spent most of his break underwater, enthralled by the multihued corals and fish. Back on land,

he couldn’t help but wonder how the non-diving guests spent their time. Naturally, his background in beauty made him wonder whether there might be a business opportunity to be found. Wasn’t this place where life stands still, where the hardest question each day was choosing a cocktail at happy hour, the perfect location for a bit of pampering? etersoone. Throughout the course of his holiday, JeanClaude discussed with him the idea of developing a beauty salon and spa on the island. He even quizzed guests on what treatments they might prefer. Once home, rather than reminisce on holiday memories, a notion took shape. He met with Pietersoon once again, this time in Paris, and the idea was finalised. By December of the same year, The Beauty Centre and Spa opened at Rihiveli, the first of its kind in the country. And the rest, as they say, is history. It’s exactly thirty years since the first spa opened in the Maldives. There are now over 100 resorts in the country and each one now offers an on-site spa as standard. Many properties even add the moniker ‘& Spa’ to the resort’s name. In fact, so ingrained is the concept of wellness to the Maldives brand that it has become one of the flagship selling points of the country. Many visitors now associate the Maldives with relaxation and rejuvenation above all other factors. But back in 1986, not everyone was convinced by JeanClaude’s vision. “Several people said that it was a crazy idea,” Monachon recalls, “that it would never work in the Maldives, that the clientele would not be responsive to such a service.” With hindsight we know Monachon’s idea worked. Yoga was already beginning to explode across Europe and the West in a big way, and was no longer the exclusive domain of wheatgrass drinking hippies. Instead, the discipline was being taken up by middle class yuppies who were willing to spend serious money on looking and feeling good. In the same vein, a change in collective consciousness began to emerge amongst Europeans who suddenly cared about things like organic fruit, detox programmes and that catch-all term ‘wellness.’ People no longer simply wanted to trudge from their home to their air-conditioned offices, eating processed foods and feeling perpetually tired. Instead, many Europeans looked for holiday destinations that could make them feel better, more energetic, refreshed. And the Maldives soon realised that it had just what they were looking for. As such the beauty centre at Rihiveli, which had initially focused on cosmetic treatments, began to shift its focus to the idea of wellness, and wellbeing. Elsewhere in the country spas were springing up in resorts across the atolls, with hotel owners quick to understand how well suited their desert islands were to rejuvenation. Yogis were brought from India, and spa menus expanded to include Ayurvedic treatments from Sri Lanka and healing massages from Indonesia and Thailand. As the global spa and wellness industry began to expand

WELLBEING

across the globe (an industry, that is now estimated to be worth more than $3 trillion dollars), the Maldives began to welcome household names to their spas, with brands such as Elemis and Clarins now operating in the country. A growth that maybe even Jean-Claude could not have foreseen. And he too was not immune to change, the Maldives left its mark on him as well. Once only a diving enthusiast, in the Maldives he quickly became an instructor, working his way up to executive level positions within both PADI and SSI. In fact, mention his name to any seasoned Maldives hotelier they’ll know him as a diver, many unaware of his roots in the beauty industry. But Jean-Claude has not forgotten them. And like so many things in life, it appears that his interests are now coming full circle. After decades in the Maldivian diving industry, he is once again launching a new beauty initiative in the country. Alongside his wife Marina NitzscheMonachon, a dermatologist, and local partner Aminath Sameer with whom he operates his company Medical Swiss, Jean-Claude realised that despite a booming spa industry in the country, there were no training academies. Budding beauticians have to travel to Thailand for certification. And so the idea of a beauty academy was born. Launching in September 2016 in Male’, the school will train students in the most cutting edge beauty treatments as it will be the sole distributor of Clarena cosmetic products and devices. The treatments include elements that have not yet been offered in Maldives such as laser hair removal and microdermabrasion. Some have expressed their doubts over the idea. There isn’t enough demand for these services, they say. JeanClaude has faced this kind of criticism before. It didn’t faze him then and it certainly isn’t fazing him now. Words by: Adam Green

hese days the Maldives regularly scores top reviews on travel blogs and TripAdvisor, but the earliest visitors were often unimpressed and lucky to get home alive. Long before the Maldives became the byword for paradise the islands were better known to travellers for their treacherous reefs and deadly fevers. The Maldives was an isolated place brimming with danger and death, far from a dream destination. By far the most prominent early reviewer was Francois Pyrard, a 17th century French sailor stranded in the atolls when his ship lost its bearings and was wrecked on the coral shoals. Pyrard was held against his will for five years, during which time most of his shipmates were robbed and beaten. Many later died of hunger, disease 54

or were executed for attempting to escape. Pyrard was the first European to document the country’s curious geography and one of the few to experience the islands’ dreaded malarial fevers and live to tell the tale. “The sickness was severe and very troublesome; it is known through all the Indies under the name of Maldive fever,” he wrote after his eventual escape in 1607. “It is the sickness of which most of my companions died, as all strangers fail not to be soon attacked.” Pyrard went onto describe a range of illnesses that blighted the isles, notably periodic poxes caused by the restricted diet and a lack of fresh water. His conclusion that the islands were particularly hostile to foreign-

ers would be echoed by a succession of fellow explorers. The Maldives would score terrible reviews over the next 400 years. When British civil servant H.C.P. Bell found himself stranded in the islands in 1879, Maldivian hospitality was edging closer to its current five-star status, though travel warnings remained firmly in place. Completing the most meticulous studies of the islands to date, Bell reported that his vessel had been one of sixteen wrecked in the islands between 1850 and 1880 alone, though the practice of claiming all stranded vessels as property of the Sultan had stopped. British naval surveys had produced the first maps of the atolls just decades earlier, though further attempts to study island life were cut short by the persistent pestilence. It was perhaps only Bell’s unique fortune in avoiding the illness that left him surprised at the “little known and less regarded” nature of the country.

Published by MVHOTELS

“Europeans seem especially liable to this fatal scourge of the islands,” wrote Bell in his report. “Many have been the ill-fated survivors of wrecks on the Atolls who have but exchanged a watery grave for a slower death from this insidious pest...Its unhealthiness for Europeans has become notorious, and has undoubtedly been a great obstacle to foreign intercourse and internal improvements.” Similarly, the observations of German explorer C.W. Rosset - who would take the very first photographs of Maldivians in 1885 - were quickly sobered by the reality of the environment, largely untouched by foreigners since the brief 16th century Portuguese occupation. “As I leant over the bulwarks, admiring the scene, I suddenly became aware of a painfully pestilential odour, which at once dissipated the romantic thoughts which the beauty of the scene had conjured up,” wrote Rosset. “This was the much dreaded fever-laden breath of the lagoons, the cause of the deadly Maldive fever.”

A short time later, Maldivian Prime Minister Amin Didi would pen what might be regarded as the country’s first travel brochure. Amin’s booklet hoped only that the “expansive horizons” and “azure haziness” would lure people as to the government showroom in Colombo where they could purchase little pieces of paradise - lacquer work, sea shells, coir rope and the famous Maldive fish - without the health risks.

diversifying from fishing and boatbuilding into tourism, the paradise trade has drawn innovation from isolation, propelling the country from one of the poorest in the world to the richest per capita in South Asia. The population has quadrupled and the image of mystery has been firmly replaced with one of wondrous luxury.

Yet, even in 1948, the idea that foreign tourists might actually pay to visit must have seemed absurd to a nation described as reclusive and wary of the outside world by its own president.

Thankfully for today’s guests, the country became the first in the region to be officially declared malaria-free in 2015, and it’s been over thirty years since the last documented case. Additionally, a fleet of seaplanes and nine airports now give foreign travellers a bird’s eye view of the atolls of which marooned mariners could only have dreamed.

Soon afterwards, colonialism entered its final throes and the tiny island nation stepped onto the world stage, gaining independence and UN membership in 1965, and beginning a period of unprecedented development. Though the new international partners advised against

These days well over a million tourists flock to the Maldives to live out the castaway experience. To many, being stranded on a white sanded island would seem like a dream come true. ~ The certificate received after crossing the equator~ ~ Arachchilage Dineshindikakgpv ~

n centuries past, sailors would celebrate the crossing of the equator with elaborate ceremony. Maldivian is continuing the tradition of marking the transition between hemispheres - all passengers flying to Gan International Airport with a Maldivian domestic flight will receive a personalized Equator Crossing Certificate from the Captain. The ceremony of Crossing the Line is a centuries-old ritual that commemorates a sailor’s first crossing of the equator. Sailors would have to prove their worthiness in front of the character of King Neptune. Ceremonies often made the initiates go through a series of embarrassing ordeals. The ceremonies are still performed today in various navies and sail training ships and the occasion is marked on civilian ocean liners too, though with less emphasis on humiliating

the initiates. Given its long history, the ritual has changed over the years, but it remains a well-known linchpin of naval culture. However, as air traffic increased the act of crossing the equator lost its charm, although in the 1940’s some airlines issued elaborate certificates commemorating the crossing. Maldivian hopes to continue this ancient tradition by giving out the Equator Crossing Certificates. The equator lies between Fuvahmulah and Gaafu Dhaalu, and passengers will be able to remember the breath-taking aerial view of the endless islands. Words by: Ahmed Ijaz
