Welcome

ABOARD
Greetings and best wishes for a happy and prospective new year! Our journey began 15 years ago as a domestic carrier and in just a few years we have grown into a multi-service company including the nation’s flag carrier and the journey continues. This growth has been possible due to our clear vision, our steadfast team of professionals and the many partners working round the clock, and the continuous support of our friends and well-wishers. We advance into the months ahead with the same dedication by applying our industry experience in flight operations, engineering and maintenance, route planning, safety and quality and providing training to develop our staff. From the very beginning we have ventured to build and grow on a solid foundation, with the core being safety and quality. Our commitment is to drive our business forward effectively. We have the support and guidance from the government, our patrons and chiefly the customers who fly with us all year round. As we spread our wings, we will continue to stay on our course to provide air connectivity within Maldives and beyond. Thank you Abdul Haris Managing Director

Gourmet Dining 6 Meters Below At
The World’s Best Underwater Hotel Restaurant With 79 grandiose one bedroom pool villas and expansive residences unravelling over two, three and four bedrooms, the best underwater restaurant on earth and a 3:1 staff-guest ratio, Anantara Kihavah Villas in the Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve is one of the Maldives most resplendent resorts. For the ultimate adventures above and below the water, guests staying here go from their luxurious Over Water Pool Villa with glass-bottomed bathtubs to an underwater restaurant, aptly named SEA, for gourmet dining and degustation dinners.
Dreaming Over The Ocean Poised over a lagoon with sweeping ocean views are the Over Water Pool Villas. There are 40 in total, arranged in a colossal circular formation and interlinked by an overwater bicycle pathway. With vaulted ceilings and dark hardwood floors, the main bedroom of each villas opens up onto a wraparound deck that epitomises Maldivian luxury. Furnished with a queen-size daybed that swings from the ceiling, hammocks that hang over the lagoon and a ladder that drops you straight into the water, this is where your dreams take a holiday. Then there’s the bathroom. Fronted by floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors with step-through access to an oversize plunge pool, it features a glass shower box with sweeping Indian Ocean views, outdoor rainforest shower, his and hers vanities, pearl white chaise lounge and, the piece de resistance, a glass-bottomed bathtub that peers down into the sparkling turquoise waters; glance down to see tropical fish and spotted eagle-rays sweep along the bottom of your tub. 12

Imbibing With The Finest Where else can you tour the vineyards of the world six meters underwater? For the second consecutive year, Anantara Kihavah Villa’s acclaimed underwater restaurant SEA received the prestigious three star accolade from World of Fine Wines Magazine. In the publication’s World’s Best Wine Lists, over 4,000 restaurants from around the globe were considered for the awards, with just 896 restaurants bestowed a one, two, or three-star accolade, and only 300 wine lists making it into the top three-star category.
Dining At SEA The mirrored interior reflects the surrounding Indian Ocean sea life as you dine on European cuisine and take paired wine suggestions from the resident Wine Guru. Voted by World Travel Awards in 2015 as the World’s Best Underwater Hotel Restaurant, SEA doubles as a restaurant and the world’s only underwater wine cellar, with coveted 360 labels in its collection. “This incredible spot offers the unreal experience of dining underwater—no scuba gear necessary,” explains General Manager Jean-Marc Ma-Poon. “Our underwater dining adventure is right in the heart of Baa Atoll and the only one in the world on the edge of a natural reef. With more than 100 species of marine life swimming around, no matter what the time of day it is, guests can be sure of great views, with delicious cuisine as well!” SEA serves lunch and dinner, as well as breakfast on request, while taking in the 360-degree view of the Indian Ocean’s mesmerizing marine life around you. Four-course degustation menus are served under the winning combination of Senior Wine Guru Nilesh Bootun’s vine expertise and the culinary ‘Haute & Nouvelle Cuisine’ experience of the resort’s Executive Chef, Lamberto Valdez. Reservations from outside guests are possible, and it’s highly advisable to make a booking well in advance. Published by MVHOTELS
Now in its second year, the wine awards are quickly becoming some of the most prestigious awards within the restaurant community. According to World Sommelier Champion Gerard Bassett, the awards are the pinnacle for a restaurant wine list: “These exciting new global awards are rapidly becoming as coveted as Michelin Stars.” The esteemed panel of senior judges this year included some of the world’s greatest experts, including Alder Yarrow, Elin McCoy, Ch’ng Poh Tiong, Andrew Jefford, Andreas Larsson, Francis Percival, Tom Stevenson and The World of Fine Wine Editor Neil Beckett. The World of Fine Wines publication comments, “Few restaurants in the world can claim to offer its guests a view as distractingly gorgeous as that offered by Sea Underwater Wine Cellar and Restaurant […] In such a setting, the food and wine needs to be special if it’s to be anything more than a supporting player. But a glance at the fine international cuisine and extensive collection of bottles suggests a remarkable gastronomic as well as visual spectacle—a spectacle where Michel Picard Puligny-Montrachet 2010 is matched with Atlantic salmon mi-cuit, crisp potatoes galette, snow peas trendrils, and an orange and miso reduction.” Anantara Kihavah’s Senior Wine Guru, Nilesh Bootun, takes great pride and pleasure sharing his passion for wines says, “Our Wine List enables oenophiles to embark in a journey with amazing adventures from Old World to New World by discovering some prestigious selection among 360 labels, handpicked from 20 renowned wine producing countries including the new horizons such as India, China, Thailand and Turkey. Personal taste always varies from each individual but the preference of enjoying young wines (ready to drink) to vintage treasures (at their peak) would be definitely possible with the 90 year of wine history (from 1924 to 2014) having a selection from each decade.” Anantara Kihavah Villas offers exceptional food and wine pairing in the award-winning stylish resort haven of private pool villas, just 35 minutes by seaplane with Maldivian Airways from Male. Visit maldives
year 2016
On the 1st January 2016, a tourist from the United Kingdom, Ms. Kate Holmes, stepped off her plane at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport. She was probably expecting to enjoy something of the Maldivian’s famous hospitality and a relaxing beach trip. She certainly wasn’t expecting what happened next. Ms. Holmes was greeted by a delegation of high-level Maldivians dressed in traditional costume, was serenaded with a bodu beru performance and handed a free holiday courtesy of Outrigger Konotta Maldives. Unbeknownst to Ms. Holmes, she was the first arrival in 2016 and had arrived during the “Visit Maldives Year 2016” marketing campaign. The overall aim of the campaign is to increase tourists arrivals to 1.5 million a year and to promote the “Maldives… Published by MVHOTELS
sunny side of life” national brand. It’s hoped that the campaign will not only show off the Maldives as an exclusive destination, but will also foster solidarity, harmony and wellbeing for the people of Maldives. It will encourage economic growth and job opportunities for locals. The ‘Visit Maldives Year’ was kicked off on New Year’s Eve with fireworks and music from international artists and various colorful activities are planned throughout the year. More than thirty events are planned both nationally and internationally. Recently the campaign celebrated the Chinese New Year on the local island of Maafushi, where tourists got the opportunity to participate in a full day of activities. There was a special dinner beneath the stars and entertainment that blended Maldivian and Chinese cultures.
The biggest event of the campaign will be the Maldives’ partnership with ITB Berlin, the world’s largest travel and trade show. The ITB will be a showcase for Maldivian performances, cuisine, handicrafts and much, much more. The Visit Maldives campaign is the brainchild of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and was launched at the UNWTO conference held at Bandos Island Resort by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The campaign coincides with the nation’s celebration of its fiftieth year of independence. Every 500,000th visitor to the Maldives can now expect a special treatment, just like Ms. Holmes experienced, and it looks set to be a great year for the Maldivian tourism industry.

Hidden Secrets oF bangkok Tourists flock to Bangkok for many reasons and any old tourist guide will point out the sleek shopping malls, the famous temples, the best places to eat, etc. But if you prefer a more unique experience then Bangkok has a wealth of little known secrets just waiting to be discovered. Here we’ve picked a few interesting places that few tourists ever visit. VINTAGE SHOPPING Sure, Bangkok has shopping-a-plenty but there’s nowhere quite like Rot Fai Market, an open-air bazaar where you can pick up vintage collectables from times gone by. You can find an amazing range of stuff including antique cameras, Japanese anime toys and even some weird and wonderful fashions. The traders aren’t pushy and there’s a great atmosphere for the bargain hunter. Nearby are some funky restaurants if shopping’s not your thing. MODERN ART Although the country is best-known for its traditional culture, modern Thailand is fascinating too and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is a celebration of this. The museum houses an amazing selection of modern Thai art set within a rather mesmerising five storey gallery. This is a world-class art gallery full of beautiful and thought provoking pieces from Thailand’s most exciting artists. FORENSIC MUSEUM Warning: This one is not for the faint hearted. Located inside the Siriraj Hospital on the west bank of the Chao Phraya river the hospital has a series of unusual (i.e. creepy) exhibits. Walking though the museum you will feel like a star in your very own horror movie. You can see grisly human remains that demonstrate disease and injury. There’s even the preserved corpse of a famous murderer from the 1950s who was known to eat the livers of children. Fascinating… if that’s your thing. BOTANICAL GARDENS The Rama IX Park is a great antidote to the crowded city and despite having so many luscious sights very few tourists visit here. Set out over 200 acres it’ll take you hours to explore it all, unless you decide to hire a golf cart for the day which is really fun. The park is divided into different sections with internationally inspired landscapes, such as the English and Japanese gardens. There’s a picturesque lake at the heart of the gardens where you can grab some refreshments or enjoy a pedal boat ride. RETRO MOVIES It isn’t hard to find an ultra-modern cinema in any of South East Asia’s cities these days, but it is a rarity to find a retro movie theatre like the Scala Cinema in Siam Square. Built in 1967, the cinema will transport you to a bygone age with its impressive chandeliers and sweeping staircases. Immaculately maintained, the cinema offers bargain prices and a great atmosphere to watch the latest blockbusters or art-house movies from Asia and Europe. Easy to find, the cinema is located just five minute walk from the BTS station at Siam. The popcorn’s great too. 16

Hotel Premier:
Velana Beach
Local luxury on Maafushi island
Found on the local island of Maafushi, Velana Beach hotel opened its doors to travellers at the end of 2015, and the hotel is already proving to be a huge hit. Bookings for the hotel were first taken during the summer of 2015, when there was already huge demand from travellers to book suites in this new boutique hotel. That was just the beginning of the Velana Beach story; the hotel is receiving a steady stream of bookings and has already gained a loyal following. Some of the hotel’s first arrivals said: “We have been keeping an eye on the hotel opening date to ensure we were the first guests at the hotel. We are totally amazed to see how well the hotel is prepared for its first guests. Together with the amenities, the staff and food; everything feels so good.” Velana Beach is in one of the prime locations on Maafushi Island, and is just a 5 minute walk from the arrival jetty. The hotel manager meets every new hotel guest at the jetty, and either walks with them back to the property or arranges transport for them if they prefer. He takes the time to give his guests tips on how to get the most out of their visit to Velana Beach and Maafushi more broadly, and to take note of any specific requirements they may have during their stay. The hotel impresses visitors at first sight, with a huge beach front and beautifully designed gardens, luxuriant hammocks and intimate seating areas at the hotel’s fine dining Kaalama restaurant. The design of the indoor and outdoor areas perfectly captures the refreshing breeze that continues throughout the day. Published by MVHOTELS

The spacious hotel lobby area merges into the Kaalama restaurant to give a friendly, living-room feeling. The high ceiling gives a sense of grandeur and elegance, while details such as landscape paintings by local artists instil a local and homely feeling. Decorated in neutral tones throughout, the hotel has an earthy atmosphere that provides the perfect backdrop to the naturally vibrant colours the Maldives is known for. As guests arrive in the lobby, they’re served cold towels and refreshing lemon water: an invigorating welcome to their new home away from home. It’s these thoughtful gestures and the personalised service that sets Velana Beach apart. Maafushi has typically been a haven for budget travellers in the Maldives, but Velana Beach offers the best of both worlds: luxurious details with a homely, local feeling. During the weekends and for spe20

cial events, locals flock to Maafushi alongside international travellers to enjoy the beaches, restaurants and outdoor activities. With more than 45 guesthouses on Maafushi, ranging from basic to high-end, it can be difficult for guests to know where to stay. Budget accommodation can be a little too basic, while high-end accommodation may not give enough local charm. Velana Beach offers something a little different: a boutique stay that combines the comforts of home with understated luxury. Indeed, Velana Beach takes the personal touch seriously: “There is always something we can do to make our guests’ stays memorable,” said Hussain Iyaz, Sales Manager at the hotel. “It could be a surprise cake, a candlelit dinner, or a local fishing trip. We make sure our guests go home with perfect holiday photos and memories.”
Velana Beach has 10 rooms of various types, from ‘deluxe’ to ‘premier’ with a balcony. These 23m² are individually designed with an elegant yet contemporary feel. Modern artwork and statement pieces of furniture are peppered throughout, while patches of bright colour add focal points to the white, minimalist backdrop. Balconies are at least 26m², allowing indoor-outdoor living at its best for those who opt for a room with a balcony. All rooms come with the creature comforts that make a hotel stay pleasant, including air conditioning, private en suite bathrooms stocked with free, luxury toiletries, a flat screen television with satellite channels and a work desk. Coffee-lovers especially enjoy the top notch in-room coffee-making facilities in the premier rooms; ideal for a quick dose of caffeine in the morning or a leisurely sip while relaxing on the balcony. The on-site Kaalama Restaurant is quickly becoming known as one of finest restaurants on the island. At breakfast, the restaurant serves traditional local fare of Maldivian Mashuni and Roshi with bread, baked beans, sausages and fresh juices. An à la carte menu is served for lunch and dinner, offering a range of local and international cuisine. For those who like a cosy dining experience, there is space for 26 people inside. On the other hand, the outdoor terrace is ideal for guests who love to feel the breeze and look out to the magnificent ocean. In the evening, this makes the perfect spot for candlelit and celebratory meals. For guests who can bear to pull themselves away from Velana Beach, Maafushi’s Bikini Beach for sunbathing, swimming and water sports is just a 5 minute walk away. The hotel works with the leading provider of motorised and non-motorised water sports on the island, Active Water Sports, to help guests plan their activities. “We welcome locals and island guests on the various activities we run and Velana Beach is our new favourite hotel”, Ahmed Yasir, the Managing Director of Active Water Sports said. Visitors to Maafushi especially enjoy the Friday night live music event, where a range of prizes are up for grabs, including water sports and free meals at various restaurants on Maafushi, including Kaalama at Velana Beach. The team at Velana Beach can also organise a number of other activities for visiting guests, depending on what takes their fancy during their stay. This includes shark feeding, manta ray spotting, snorkelling, speed boat trips and day trips to nearby resorts, provided by the local company, Icom Tours. Although Velana Beach is still in its infancy, there are grand plans to continue developing the hotel to satisfy every guest’s needs. “We are not trying to be another hotel in Maafushi; we Published by MVHOTELS
want to take the industry to the next level in terms of service and standards” Adheel Ismail, Co-Founder of Velana Beach said. The company vision is to create a mid market hotel brand, that stands out both in concept and experience. The hotel is expected to have another 10 rooms by end of 2016.
with travellers becoming increasingly interested in staying on local islands in the Maldives to get a feeling of the rhythm of Maldivian life. Offering its warm welcome and tasteful accommodation, Velana Beach is the ideal hotel from which to experience the island and a home-from-home feeling.

Healthy Food Trends in 2016!
Ingredients seem to come in and out of fashion. Insect proteins, grass and seeds are just a few examples that have come and gone. So, what kind of foods can we look forward to this year? What will the leading resorts of Maldives have on their menus in 2016?
Salts Salt is one of the most fundamental ingredients that give a dish a little taste, but recently salt has risen to take centre stage. A diner staying at a leading resort now has a choice of twenty varieties of salt, including smoky salts and a wide variety of herb salts. Don’t be surprised if your meat dish arrives within a solid block of crystallised salt brought in from some Himalayan mountain. Per Aquum resort even has a restaurant called ‘Salt.’ Anantara also has a restaurant named ‘Salt’ and they even have a salt sommelier.
Healthy Fats & Oils Grass & Seaweed Grass isn’t just for land and marine herbivores it’s good for humans too, and this healthy trend is taking centre stage in many luxury resorts. One may find, for example, ultra concentrated wheat grass freshly prepared as a natural ‘tonic’ that cleanses the digestive system with a high dose of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals. Or you might try an exotic salad containing Ogonori seaweed, preserved in salt (of course), served with sesame seeds and accompanied with sashimi or sushi the dish is healthy and tasty too. 22

The fad for fat-free diets is, thankfully, over. Recent trends have recognised the importance of healthy fats in a balanced diet. Fatty fish, fish oil and lean meats are increasingly being eaten by the health conscious along with high fat nuts and fruits such as the avocado. We are also seeing a return to some good old fashioned dishes, such as grilled steak (best made with a prime cut from a grass or grain fed animal). Published by MVHOTELS
c uisin e
Exotic Food Themes Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisines are common themes in many luxury resorts. Perhaps too common. That’s why chefs are turning to lesser known dishes from around the world for inspiration. Don’t be surprised to sample some African dishes during your stay – you might even be greeted by a spear wielding African in traditional garb at your restaurant. Or, you might get to experience a tantalising meal of Maldivian fusion cuisine prepared using ingredients you might never heard of, lovingly prepared by a new generation of Maldivian master chefs.
Health Gurus There is certainly plenty of food to choose from, but how do you know the best food for you? These days health gurus and dieticians are a common sight within the luxury resorts of Maldives. Guests can now receive a personalised diet plan from one of these gurus that will help them hit their health goals such as weight loss, detoxification or anti-aging. Just don’t expect miracles if you’re only staying for a week.

Hotspots Employees at some of the most sought-after resorts in the Maldives share their global travel hotspots.
Total relaxation
“After a good exercise session, whether in the gym or on the bike, I like to laze on a beanbag at Kurumba’s beach. Reading a good book followed by a relaxing swim in the lagoon is perfect. I think flying also offers a chance to unwind. It’s a good chance to catch up on emails, do a bit of work without the phone or internet, and then settle down to watch a few movies.”
Great food
“I love fresh, healthy ingredients, and cuisine that is not overly complicated. It’s hard to beat the food from Italy, where the products are typically from within a 50km radius and the style of cooking respects each constituent part of the meal. I also love visiting Italian markets and meeting farmers who are so passionate about their cheese, seafood, oils and other products. When you have a little background to the ingredients and how much love is put into them, it certainly brings a simple dish to life.”
Inspiring scenery
“There is nowhere quite as dramatic as North Queensland in Australia. You can go from the harsh outback into a tropical rainforest in a matter of kilometres. I also love it for the fact it’s the place where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef.”

Bucket list
“I do love travelling and riding my bike through Italy, in particular Sardinia. However, the next destination on my bucket list is Girona in Spain. I’ve made some new friends there, who are professional cyclists, and I’m really looking forward to visiting them and taking in the local culture, sights and sounds. On the relaxation side of things, I’m interested to experience the food and the colourful atmosphere, although I’m also looking forward to doing some cycling too.”

Total relaxation
“I find total relaxation in the cool breeze of the Himalayan mountains. Being an avid biker, I have travelled around on my motorcycle exploring the foothills of the Himalayas, from Kashmir to Kathmandu to Bhutan. Bhutan is one of the little explored destinations of the world: it’s the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ and the only country to measure ‘Gross National Happiness’. The people, the landscape and mountain ranges are simply breath-taking. One has to visit there to know how to live life happily.”
Great food
“As a good cook myself, I love to try different and new cuisines whenever I travel. Good food for me is a food cooked with simple, honest ingredients and with a full heart and soul. I have had some really great food in the villages of Tuscany. I happened to be the guest of a family for few days, who also ran a restaurant. All the vegetables were grown in the garden in front of the house, and the day’s menu would be decided depending on the morning’s harvest.”
Inspiring scenery
“Whenever I have time off work, I love to get lost in the Himalayas with my motorcycle. The whole mountain range is just full of mystery and camping there is amazing. There are many places which stand out, but Taktsang Monastery in Paro, Bhutan — also known as ‘Tiger’s nest’ — was built by monks in the early 17th Century and hangs on a cliff at 3,120 metres.”
Bucket list
“There are many places, but Africa, Turkey and Mongolia are at the top of my bucket list at the moment. I’d like to visit Africa for the people, the wildlife, and to ride around the continent exploring the landscape. In Turkey I’m interested in experiencing the food, people, culture, history and monuments. Mongolia appeals to me for the landscape, history and people.”

Total relaxation
“My favourite place for total relaxation is Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in Vietnam. This beautiful hotel sits on a dramatic bay that gives the feeling of an island, with impressive rock formations overlooking the East Vietnam Sea. A white sand beach and beautiful views of mountains add to the sense of being intimately at one with nature; it brings complete relaxation and you forget the stresses of the world. The resort presents the reality of the destination too, with an architectural style incorporating traditions of Vietnam.”
Great food
Abdulla Sobah Chef De Cuisine Soneva Fushi
“Being a chef, I always try to eat different cuisines to enhance my dining experiences. Out of many, I love the cuisine in Gaggan restaurant in Thailand. The vast selection of Indian cuisine has made this restaurant my all-time favourite. The menu is inspired by seasonal ingredients, the freshest produce, an amazing diversity of Indian regional flavours, and childhood memories of street food. Its stunning whitewashed colonial-style wooden house in the heart of downtown Bangkok completes a memorable dining experience.”
Inspiring scenery
“Soneva Kiri in Thailand has a natural beauty, completed with intricate wooden craftsmanship, that gives a feeling of both inspiration and relaxation. It offers an unrivalled combination of luxury, environmentally friendly design and unforgettable, authentic Thai experiences that you will never ever forget.”
THE GLOW OF LOVE Imagine a place where time stands still. Where every moment spent together lasts a lifetime. A sunrise walk, hand in hand, through powdery white sand. A thrilling adventure learning to sail a catamaran through crystal-clear azure waters. An eternity of bliss as expert hands massage away all your worldly worries. The joys of discovering new cultures on nearby islands. The spectacular sunset welcoming you back to your island retreat. Hours of conversation and sublime cuisine during romantic dinners for two. Imagine your days at a lovely resort that gives you Time for Emotions – Robinson Club Maldives, just 20 minutes from Kaadedhoo Airport.

China’s massive
2.4 billion dollar resort
Sasha Arms takes us for a look at the new resort in China’s Xishuangbanna Prefecture. Boasting a theme park, auditorium, hotels, bars, restaurants and even a first rate hospital, this mammoth resort represents the future of China’s tourism industry. Wanda Xishuangbanna International Resort which opened in autumn 2015 cost more than 16 billion Chinese Yuan (USD 2.4 billion), making it the biggest tourism investment in south west China to date. With an area of 5.4 square kilometres the resort is huge, approximately the same size as Male’. The resort boasts a huge range of activities but one of the biggest draws is the open-air theme park. The rollercoaster is the only one in Asia that travels through rainforest. 52

The water coaster hits speeds of 100 mph - it’s the fastest and tallest one in Asia. The park is also home to Asia’s largest artificial wave pool, a 4,600 square meter beach and a ‘Sky Shuttle’ with a terrifying 60 metre drop. The perfect venue for cultural shows and stunt performances with high-tech stage effects is the Dai Show Theatre. is shaped like the traditional bamboo hat of the local Dai people. They’ve even drafted in top theatre director Franco Dragone to put on some world class shows. Accommodation on the resort can be found in three luxury brands: Wanda Vista Resort Xishuangbanna, DoubleTree by Hilton and the Holiday Inn. Each hotel offers accommodation surrounded by lush vegetation, luxury spas and international cuisine. Visitors will be able to experience the famous Yunnan cuisine for themselves along with traditional Thai and Cantonese dishes. There’s also a wine and cigar bar to aid digestion. For those who like to explore local culture there’s plenty going on in Xishuangbanna. Within easy travelling distance are Buddhist temples and traditional bamboo stilt houses. The region is also one of the most bio diverse regions in China and the home to the Asian Elephant, and an elephant sanctuary isn’t far away. The man behind the project is none other than Wang Jianlin, Chairman of the Dalian Wanda Group, who, according to Bloomberg, is the richest man in Asia. “The landmark project heralds the transition and transformation of Yunnan tourism, and will absolutely become the new gold standard, a new representative, and a new calling card
for tourism in the region,” Mr. Jianlin is quoted as saying. He went on to describe his ambition to “establish the resort as a brand new travel destination in China, and even the world.” There’s no doubt the resort has put the region firmly on the map, and already flocks of tourists are arriving. During China’s Golden Week some 300,000 visitors were recorded, and it certainly looks like plenty more guests will be expected throughout the year.

Real life reviews Read all about 15 of the best restaurants in the Maldives and what travellers had to say about them on TripAdvisor.
1. Thila, Kurumba Vihamanafushi
“The menu looks amazing; what is more, the actual food was even better… The ambiance is amazing. Set over the water and at the water’s edge, depending on where you sit, you see fish swimming past, including a few reef sharks every now and again. We had a very romantic dinner here; it was supreme.” Couple visiting from England
2. Edge, PER AQUUM Niyama
“This restaurant is incredibly romantic. The majority of the tables are located outside, so that you may dine under the stars. There is a separate bar area, which is great for watching sunsets. You arrive to this location by speedboat, which leaves the resort every 30 minutes starting at 17:20. My husband and I watched the sunset at Edge one afternoon, and dined at this location during another evening.” Couple visiting from Thailand
3. Muraka, Mirihi Island Resort
“Drinks or dinner at this lovely spot never disappoint. The service is attentive and the food divine. Then there are the sunsets, stars and ocean fish entertainment that make this a one in a million experience.” Visitors from USA
4. Just Veg, Atmosphere Kanifushi
“Myself and my husband are on most days carnivores, but we wanted to experience a vegetarian restaurant. Just Veg was literally an incredible surprise. “We ate at all the restaurants here and loved each one. Salt was really good and we had an enjoyable meal with some different salts from around the world. Fire was really good Asian cuisine which they prepared right in front of you which was cool to watch. Sea was pricey but worth it, because where else can you have dinner underneath the sea while watching all the fish and sharks right in the coral reef? It was amazing and something you won’t be able to do everywhere.” Visitors from England
6. Fresh in the Garden, Soneva Fushi
“The menu is refined, and so, so, so delicious. Chef Chris is a food magician! The whole atmosphere and the fragrances of the fresh herbs of the garden made the whole experience even more memorable. After the dinner you can visit the resort’s observatory and gaze at the starts. Our evening was beyond expectations.” Visitors from Thailand
7. The Kitchen, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma

13. Sala Thai Restaurant, Male
“Sala Thai is an authentic Thai restaurant, just a short walk from the airport ferry jetty. Great range of freshly cooked meals. Between two of us, we had the chicken satay as a starter, then the prawn phad Thai and a chicken green curry with rice. Even if you have just a few hours until your seaplane to the Maldives islands, Male is worth a quick visit and lunch or dinner that the Sala Thai would be worth the trip alone.” Couple visiting from England

I strongly recommend you visit Jing if only once whilst visiting this magical island.” Visitors from Australia

Notes from the past How the new currency celebrates Maldivian cultural history This year, returning visitors to the Maldives might be surprised to notice the new currency in circulation. The new series of bank notes entitled ‘Ran Dhihafaheh’ which means ‘Golden 50’ commemorate fifty years of independence. The new notes are a celebration of Maldivian culture and paint a vivid picture of the island nation’s long history. Take a look at the new MVR 10 note. You’ll notice a drum. This is actually the oldest drum in Maldives, currently preserved in the national museum. For centuries Maldivians have danced to drums like these in traditional performances that are both rhythmical and wild. The native Bodu Beru dance is very similar to those found in Africa. It’s thought that African traders plying the Indian Ocean trade winds first brought their distinctive drums to Maldives centuries ago. These days you can usually catch a performance in a resort. It’s likely that Bodu Beru was imported to the Maldives on a sailing craft similar to the one illustrated on the MVR 20 note. The Dhoni boats have been fishing these azure seas long before living memory. Their design is probably based on the Arabian Dhows. Vessels of this type were used to bring cargo from Africa, Arabia and India for hundreds of years. Dhonis are still in use today, although they’ve traded their sails for diesel engines. Another import that arrived with Indian Ocean traders was Islam. The MVR 50 note celebrates the Maldivians’ embrace of this religion. Pictured is the Munnaaru minaret built in 1658 alongside the Hukuru Miskiy, or Friday Mosque. Inside the mosque the visitor can still see the intricate coral carvings and detailed lacquer work that are recognised by UNESCO who have added the mosque to their Tentative Heritage List. The MVR 100 note depicts a series of copper plates etched with the ancient Maldivian script. Much Maldivian history is recorded on plates like these which are called Lomafanu. The sultan’s edicts would be written down like this and sent out to the islands. The Lomafanu pictured is from Dhanbidhoo island, it is a record of the Sultan’s command for his people to convert to the new religion. 58

A long tradition of Maldivian craftsmanship is meanwhile celebrated on the 500 note. Here you can see an example of the distinctive lacquer work, called ‘Laajehun.’ This wood working technique was likely introduced to the Maldives by Chinese craftsmen. The Maldivians mastered the art to produce colourful and intricate pieces. These days the traditional craft is under threat from cheap imports, but artisans on the island of Thulhaadhoo continue to preserve this art. The 1000 note is a celebration of the natural beauty of the Maldives. The blue colour represents the ocean which in the Maldives is an Published by MVHOTELS
ideal environment for rare species to thrive. Pictured are the Green Turtle and the Whale Shark, two majestic creatures that inhabit the waters of Maldives. Finally, the new bank notes also represent the modern era. Made from highly durable polymer, which also make them difficult to counterfeit, the notes feature tactile dots to aid the visually impaired. The designs are by local artist Abdulla Nashath. His art truly evokes a bygone age which sits well with the sleek, modern texture of the new notes - a perfect blend of old and new. Issue 02
