Kaylee San Hi, my name is Kaylee San and I’m an incoming sophomore. I serve as the Vice President vice president and a spirit leader of Mountain View’s Key Club. Some fun facts about me are that I am a December baby and that I am a soon to be aunt. Since quarantine started all I really do is watch and rewatch shows/movies, some being Ratatouille, Glee, Insidious, and etc. Some of my hobbies include watching anime, taking care of my sister’s dog Otis, and playing Tetris. I hope y’all are having a great day! Emily Huong Secretary

Hi there! My name is Emily Huong and I am a rising junior as well as the current secretary for Mountain View Key Club. This will be my third year in the club and second year on the board! Now some hobbies of mine include doing calligraphy, watching kdramas, and volunteering at service events.

Especially during quarantine, I’ve been watching more kdramas than I should. Two fun facts about me are that I surprisingly haven’t had boba in four months and I love anything matcha whether it be matcha ice cream or matcha milk tea.

Nancy Phan Hello, I’m Nancy, Mountain View Key Club’s Treasurer. This year will be my third and final Treasurer year in Key Club as I am a senior. If you see me at school, I’m always busy; you will hardly see me not doing anything. Besides Key Club, I am in Pacific Horizon, TPA, tennis, Upward Bound, SolarCup/ Zoocrew, Journalism, and a lot more. My hobbies include watching anime. Right now I am watching Full Metal Panic. I love to snack, get out of the house, online window shop because I am broke, and watch kdramas. I also work at my family’s donut shop.

Hey guys, I’m Maycy Phan, an incoming sophomore at Mountain View High School. I serve my home club as the Event Task Representative as well as one of the Spirit Leaders. Since having been stuck in quarantine, I’ve started to watch k-dramas and as of today, I’ve completed about 8 shows. Other hobbies of mine include cooking, eating, sleeping, and secretly singing.

Hello seals! I’m Marissa Pe, your 2020-21 historian and newsletter editor. I’m an incoming sophomore. Other than key club, I’m in band, TPA, and Pacific Horizon. A fun fact about me is that I run my own very tiny cookie business! During quarantine, I took a Spanish course with Rio Hondo. I also started watching more animes and stayed up until 2 am scrolling through TikTok.

Hey key-uties! In this newsletter, there will be info on club rush, current and upcoming events, a spread featuring YOU and more! This month, we’re focusing on putting out more service events for you to get your hours up, so take advantage of this!! I hope you enjoy!. <3

Happy reading! Marissa Pe <3

At the beginning of each new school year, there is a club rush which gives both new and returning students the opportunity to see the many clubs available at their school. It encourages them to try new things and get more involved.

by Emily Huong, Secretary

On the day of club rush, all the clubs put their posters and trifolds on the table to display. This event is crucial as it allows for clubs to get new members which in turn increases membership at their meetings.

Never knowing when to join, students are able to take part in clubs that they had been interested in. When students join a club of their interest, they might even meet more people with that same interest and later on become friends with them. 8

by Kaylee San, Vice President Member recognition is a way for us to say thank you for putting your time and effort into helping your community. We get to show you that you are appreciated and what you’re doing is NOT being unnoticed. One member every month gets recognized with a personalized basket made just for them. That member is chosen based on the number of hours they have accumulated and their dedication to helping their community. Member recognition was brought to Mountain View as an incentive for our members to encourage them to do their best. It was also a reason for members to stay active. To recognize the members, each month, we hold a member of the month day where the officers pitch in to make a goodie basket. The goodie basket is then given to the most hardworking member. Our division also participates in member recognition. Every month, a member, officer, and club is recognized for their hard work by the Member Recognition Chair. The MRC gathers up some things the person likes and gives them a certificate then rewards them for their time and dedication.

The Everlasting Envelopes service event was a letter writing or art making service for senior citizens in living convalescent homes. The purpose of this event was to bring joy to lonely elders in nursing homes since visitors are not allowed during this time. Members sent in letters that were meant to cheer up the elderly to Everlasting Envelopes so they can deliver them! “It was fun to write something to help out our older citizens. Especially in our current situations, the world does need some more love and joy. I hope that the person who received my letter had a slightly better day because of it. Aiden Ngo, ‘23 Photo Credit: Gina Wong

Members had the opportunity to answer questions to donate money to the hungry with the help of the sponsors and organization, the World Food Programme. For every question answered, what was equivalent to 10 grains of rice was donated to third world countries. This event was successful as the maximum amount was 15 hours. Members were able to get their service hours up. “I thought that the Free Rice service event was great. Not only did I feel good about donating rice for free, but I also felt like my vocabulary has expanded because of it. While working on it, I would learn new words and also challenge myself to get to a higher level where there was more difficult vocabulary, which in turn lead me to donate a lot of rice.“ 13 Wesley To, ‘23

Star Wars Ep. |||: Revenge of the Sith The best Star Wars movie from the prequel series and honestly the only one that matters. The most eventful and dramatic in the Skywalker story since it really shows why Anakin Skywalker the “good guy” turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader. Even if you don’t follow along with the franchise, you can still understand the story and see the development of various characters.

For action, it is definitely one that will capture your attention! This movie shows the war between the light and the dark so there are a lot of lightsaber battles. I’ll be honest - it is also a great watch for the memes. While the movie has such a great story to tell, the dialogue allows for it to be turned into great memes. Also some moments are just plain funny. Well rounded and definitely interesting - regardless if you understand Star Wars or not. :)

Service by definition is “the action of helping or doing work for someone.” It is when you volunteer your time to go give back to your community. In Key Club, members volunteer at different events such as the LA Marathon or Pasadena Pops where they earn service hours for the amount of time they spent working. Service hours are tracked by the amount of time you spent volunteering. You can NOT receive time based on the quantity of items you made. This rule was made because it’s more fair that everyone receives the number of hours they deserve for the service they did. Why is service such a big part of Key Club? Service helps members learn to cooperate with others and prepares them to be leaders in their communities. Why should you attend service events? To make your community a little bit better and to meet new people! Key Club is a great place to interact with people from different schools. by Marissa Pe, Historian
