Back-to-school bonus NEARLY 100,000 South Australian families should are starting to receive the Federal Government Schoolkids Bonus payment to lighten the load with back-to-school costs. Eligible families are allocated up to $410 a year per child in primary school and $820 per high school student. The payments are split and given out in January and July before school returns, to all families that receive fortnightly
Family Tax Benefit payments. The Schoolkids Bonus replaces the Education Tax Refund, so families no longer have to collect receipts or fill out paperwork at the end of the financial year to receive a payment. Families who claim the Family Tax Benefit at the end of the financial year will receive their payment at that time. If your child begins primary or secondary school this year, ensure their enrolment details
are up to date with Centrelink to be eligible for the bonus. Young people in school receiving Youth Allowance and some other income support payments may also be eligible for the Schoolkids Bonus, and should contact Centrelink for details. - Details: For more information about the Schoolkids Bonus, visit www.australia.gov.au/schoolkidsbonus or the Australian Families Facebook page at www.facebook.com/FamiliesInAustralia.
Step away from hand-me-downs THE traditional hand-me-down should be avoided when it comes to shoes for school , the Australian Podiatry Association has warned. Podiatrist and spokesman Rob Mair said the start of the school term was a good time to keep an eye on children’s physical development by getting their feet checked and shoes re-fitted. “An old shoe belonging to someone else will take on their shape and gait, which will not be the same as the new wearer,” he said. “Buying a new shoe is advised.” He also condemned high heels, say-
ing fashion should stay out of the agenda. “Young girls should not be wearing high heels until they are older and they definitely should not be wearing these at school at any age,” he said. Mr Mair said professional footwear advice was a must for children with any problems with their feet. “If there are hereditary foot problems in your family, it’s worth having your child’s growth progress checked periodically by a podiatrist or at least have them properly measured by going to a shoe supplier that provides professional measuring services.”
GREAT LUNCH BOX IDEAS Kids love vegemite or ham and cheese sandwiches, but having them every day for school lunches does get monotonous. Here are some simple, quick and easy ideas to make lunchtime healthy and fun. Quiches - make your own and freeze; pasta salad - using chicken, pasta and vegetables; Wraps - try chicken and corn or vegetable medley
Pizza scrolls - tropical version with ham, cheese and pineapple; Pita breads and tortillas - use salad vegetables; Vegie sticks - great with a dip, homemade or bought; Leftover dinner - use your leftovers for finger foods or put into a roll or sandwich; Homemade pizzas - kids can help you make these which can then be frozen.
