THIS year, Spry Earthmovers is celebrating 40 years of hard work on the ground in the Murraylands. The company’s reputation for quality works delivered on time and to cost has developed over four decades of increasingly varied tasks, as operations manager Ted Emerson explained. “We do everything from civil works through to subdivisions, house pads, shed pads, dam work, and all land plane laser work, he said. “We had a contract to rebuild and maintain all the levee banks between Wellington and Mannum - that’s ongoing. Spry’s clients include farmers,

said. But the scope of Spry’s works does not end with the houses we live in and the shops and facilities we visit. When the levee banks that protect many of the Murraylands’ towns from flooding were erected, Spry Earthmovers was there doing the heavy lifting.

“He’s one of the best men in the business. He’s just another level above, and his team are very good, well qualified, and they work to back him up all the way. Bruce Harris, Bruce Harris Project Management

THE Murraylands has changed a great deal over the past 40 years, and almost every step along the way has been built on a patch of ground shifted by Spry Earthmovers. The old Bi-Lo supermarket, the Long Island Marina, the police station extension of 20 years ago, Mobilong House and Southside Village - all stand atop earthworks completed by Ray Spry and his team. “I’ve bituminised 80 per cent of the car parks in Murray Bridge, he said. “We did all the earthworks for the extension of the hospital about eight years ago, and we’ve probably done about eight subdivisions I can think of off the top of my head. When times of renewal have arrived, Spry Earthmovers has stepped in to clean the slate. “I’ve demolished nearly every house that has been knocked down in Murray Bridge in the past 30 years, Mr Spy

SPRY Earthmovers founder Ray Spry says the company was started at a time when Murray Bridge and its surrounding districts began to change. Mr Spry was hard at work levelling floors for glasshouses and chicken sheds as they began to spring up in the 1950s and 1960s. “They were only little sheds then, he said. “I used to clean them out in two hours and charge $8. Mr Spry then bought a Cranvel towbehind backhoe in 1972 and cleared channels through the swamps at Jervois. The sewer system began at Murray Bridge around the same time, so his work continued. In around 1973 he purchased a new truck for $13,000 - a considerable amount at the time - and employed a second person as his steady workload increased. In the early years, Mr Spry’s business was based on a two-acre site behind his home on Mulgundawah Road, but a decade ago it moved to its present site at 22 Fuschia Road, Murray Bridge. As the business has expanded to its current staff of around 20, Mr Spry has
