From the desk of The Executive Director

GATHER. GROW. GIVE-BACK.

One of the best parts of my job is hearing YOUR stories about what The Community House means to you and your family. I am continually inspired by hearing what this organization does to build connected and healthy communities and how it has done so for generations. There are two phrases I hear most when I’m hearing those stories, first is, “Our family LOVES The Community House,” followed by a moment or list of moments that explain why, and the second most common is “I didn’t know you did that.”

Here is the Top 3 List of Things people don’t about The Community House:

1. We do not receive your tax dollars and more than 30% of our annual revenue comes from philanthropic giving! We only exist because of your donations

2. Our Counseling Center has offered access to mental health services for more than 50 years; and today we specialize in serving young people who are uninsured or under insured. We see mental wellness as an integral part of overall health and believe access for all our neighbors is vital to building healthier communities.

3. The Spark Youth Development Initiative is changing lives for families living through economic instability in unincorporated Willowbrook with inspiring afterschool care, fun-filled summer camp, a variety of community recreation programs, and access to social workers. All of these services are giving families a chance to thrive and are fully funded through individual donations, corporate partnerships, and grant funders.

I invite you continue to learn more about us and reflect on what The Community House means to your family and that you Give with Heart and donate prior to end of the year to help us remain the hub of the community.

LYARTS

Music Together

Ages: 0-6 years old with parent/caregiver

Each week, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and the grownups who love them gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time with Tiny Toes Music. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments, of course!). In Music Together’s mixed age classes, everyone participates at their own level: babies vocalize, listen and observe; toddlers play and experiment; preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together! You’ll take home the award-winning music used in class, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. You’ll be supporting your child’s music-learning and overall development all session long as you discover new ways to play with music together. It’s so much fun, you won’t realize how much learning is taking place! Infant siblings under 9 months attend for free and any caregiver (parent, nanny, or grandparent) can participate in this family music experience. For more information, visit www.TinyToesMusic.com

YOUTH ATHLETICS

Hinsdale Gymnastics Center

All classes are located at Hinsdale Central High School (Gymnastics Room)

This program offers each child the opportunity to experience a wide range of gross motor activities while being introduced to the sport of gymnastics. There are a variety of age groups to address the various physical, experience, and maturation levels of the student. Children are amazing and diverse in their abilities and attentiveness. Each child presents with different intensities and desires, please enroll your child in the appropriate class.

“CJ” Johnson, Jeanne Johnson, and Paul Kahovec bring a novel approach to gymnastics! Individually, each has over 50 years of coaching, judging and national level competitive experience. They are paired with younger, highly motivated, and well-trained coaches to bring excellent basics and accelerated training techniques to your child.

We are excited to add Reyna Batra as club manager.

There is a range of classes to develop our beginning students and to compliment those athletes in other programs desiring extra training time.

Make up classes:

We offer one make up class per session depending on class availability and instructor approval. No class prorates for missed classes.

Ages: 18 years old and up

Join us at The Community House and meet Zuzana from Hummingbird Qigong in this beginner to intermediate Tai Chi program to improve your balance, coordination and overall health. Per Harvard Medical School, Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but it might well be called “medication in motion.” There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice has value in treating or preventing many health problems. Tai Chi is a practice that involves a series of slow gentle movements and physical postures, a meditative state of mind, and controlled breathing. It’s a low-impact, slow-motion exercise, that doesn’t put any pressure on the joints. It’s also slowly becoming therapeutic exercise for many chronic health conditions. Session/Classes will not be pro-rated and are non-refundable unless canceled by The Community House.
