The University of Charleston is becoming a prestigious school in its own right. Originally known as Morris Harvey College the University is located on the river banks of the Kanawha River. Currently under the administration of Dr. Edwin H. Welsch the University has progressed far past the days of old Morris Harvey and continues to progress into the future. Currently there are 1400 students enrolled, reaching from over 30 different states and over 20 different countries. The campus has expanded constructing six out of ten buildings in the last ten years. The most recent buildings are the Pharmacy building (2006) and the Morrison Fitness Center (2007). The new parking garage and apartment dormitory are currently under construction. UC has over 40 different clubs and organizations, including 16 different men’s and women’s athletic teams. There are 22 different undergraduate majors and a graduate school for business majors located downtown. With the University’s unique teaching methods and active learning the school has been named West Virginia’s top ranked Baccaleureate school for the past five years, and number 15 in the Southeast. For two consecutive years the University has completed a 98% placement rate among its graduating students, either furthering their schooling or beginning their new occupation. This is to attest to success the University instills into its students and how the students are able to instill their education into their lives. The mission statement for the University is “To educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement.” The professors and administrators are here to help students experience, prepare and learn their way into the real world.

The city of Charleston has a lot to offer--fun afternoons, great shopping, or fine dining. The city and it’s surrounding area hosts many varieties of restaurants and dining experiences. For shopping, the Charleston Town Center Mall, located between Quarrier and Virginia Streets, has three floors of shops and boutiques for just about any person’s needs. For other shopping desires on US 119 South there are various strip malls located in Southridge, Trace Fork, and Dudley Farms. Charleston also boasts a growing number of outdoor festivals that features live music from all over the world. Over the coarse of the summer the banks of the river are packed with visitors for Blues, Brews & BBQ, which is hosted on the UC campus. There is also a Wine and All That Jazz. A day of jazz performers and wine tastings from vineyards right here in West Virginia. In September the annual Sternwheel Regatta is always a major event for the city. For more of a casual form of entertainment there are a variety of bands and performers that come out every Friday night in the summer months for Charleston’s “Live on the Levee.” For shows and athletic events the Charleston Civic center is host to major recording artists, local high school and college athletic tournaments and competitions, and the annual Circus! Also, the city takes pride in their Minor League Baseball team the West Virginia Power. All sports fans can enjoy watching the Power play at Appalachian Power Park located in the heart of downtown Charleston.

Annual Alumni Game - Each Fall the Eagles are out working hard on the diamond preparing diligently during the in the offse off season. One way Coach Nozica, like many of the coaches on campus, gives their players a chance to play someone different is hosting an annual Alumni Game. The Alumni game gives the current players a chance to meet the older gentlemen who also spent their tenures in Charleston. This year the Alumni had a rare win in a high scoring shoot out. Coach Matt Bradley Pictured: Eric Sehnal „08 for the Eagles was the player of the game as he hit for the Game‟s first cycle.

Senior Day & Cookout - At the end of the season the team and the

parents like to show their appreciation for the team‟s Seniors. They had a long career with a lot of memorable times and the parents and coaching staff like to send them off with one more. After the last home game of the season there is a cookout held in their honor. This season‟s cookout is currently set for the weekend series versus Columbia Union on April the 11th. The date is subject to change. We hope every parent can attend and show their support for their team.

Same Cap, Same “C” - Over the years the University of Charleston‟s baseball program has had several players. The team may have changed it‟s uniform styles some but one aspect remains the same. Every player for Coach Nozica has worn their caps with the traditional “C”.

5

The Eagles every season will make a traditional trip down south to Florida. The team this Spring Break will be headed to Winter Haven, FL.

6

At the University of Charleston one oldest competing athletic programs is the Golden Eagle baseball team. The Eagles on the diamond have won Conference Championships in 1949, „50, „51, „52, „72, „81, and 1990 and look to add more in the future. The team‟s long time leader at the helm is Coach Thomas Nozica and along his side are Coaches Lee and Matt Bradley. Under their direction the team aims to grow stronger and closer as a unit. However, the development and learning for Charleston is not only expected on the field but in the class room. Coach Nozica prides his program on the true aspect of the student athlete and expects each player to take care of business in the class room before they step on the field. Along with academic discipline and hard work, Nozica will teach his players about pride. The first is to have pride in their school. The University of Charleston has developed into a nationally renowned institution and offers many windows of opportunities to it‟s students. The pride for UC athletics begins at showing support at all games, matches, and events. The baseball team can be seen at several events throughout the year and usually is involved with running the concessions or other facet of managing the event. The most important aspect of pride each Freshman player learns as they come to Charleston is to have pride for their team. The Eagles have some of the best facilities in the conference including a Minor League Stadium. Each game receives great support from the school, the community and the players‟ parents and families. Also, not to mention they compete in the toughest division in the WVIAC, which is not unusual to have several professional scouts in attendance. The coaching style of Nozica can be described as “Old School”. He has his own methods of teaching and punishment, he has unique phrases, and his own connection to his players. All of which accomplish exactly what President Welsch and the University strive to build in these student-athletes, mature young adults who can take what they have learned as preparation for the real world. 7

SEASON OUTLOOK In the spring of 2010 the Eagles have a lot to build on. The team will see the departure of Shortstop Kyle O‟Connell, Catcher Kyle Root, Catcher Tyler Boshart, and Third Baseman DJ Tilche. These three young men had strong careers for UC and will be missed. However, the Eagles have underclassmen who saw some playing time last year and are fit to replace their absence. For the first time in recent years the Eagles‟ young lineup is their strength. UC has experienced a lot that the schedule can throw at them and the team is confident that they can weather the storm in 2010. The team will open their season on February 20th in Charleston versus long time foe California University of Pennsylvania. They will pickup action in the remaining weekends until the first of March when the team will travel to Winter Haven, Florida. The coaching staff along with the players felt they had seen enough of Ft. Myers and the same teams that also make their way there. Other dates to highlight on the schedule are the all important road trips to Bluefield, WV on March 20th and 21st for a four game divisional series with the Bluefield Big Blue, and to Princeton, WV on April 17th and 18th when the Eagles take on the Concord Mt. Lions. With 25 home games scheduled this year the Eagles are set for what should be a successful season. One thing is certain the players and coaches are ready to take the field in February.

PITCHING The pitching staff had it‟s trials and tribulations last season but learned and grew from the experience. Despite young pitchers still in the rotation they have proven themselves to be very reliable. Leading the staff this season will be seniors Miles Young, and Anthony Pagano. Along their side is Matt Thompson and Blake Reta, who stepped up into their new dependent roles a year ago. The best news the pitching staff is proud to hear is after a year of abandonment by a majority of the starting rotation, is the return of two starters Michael Morency and Josh Lewis. The two pitchers were both subject top injury in 2009 but will be back on the mound for UC.

INFIELD The infield for the Golden Eagles is the deepest group on their roster. Jimmy Clarke will be back on First Base for his 4th season. Andrew Stichter, Matt Zak, and Nick Barnes are returning as former starters. The key to the depth of the infield comes from the quick maturing of the newcomers. Look for Connor Shehan, Ross Easterling, John Schraer, Igor Molina, or Doug Chance to make their career debuts in the middle infield this season.

OUTFIELD The UC outfielders are some of the most experienced players in the lineup. Mike Dahl is a Senior and four year starter. Lance Thurston is also a returning Senior and 2 year starter. Andrew Armstrong is a Junior and 3 year starter for the Eagles. In Center Field Ryan Hathaway returns for his 2nd season. Andy Pagan, Doug Chance, and Igor Molina will also be looking to find their way into outfield. CATCHERS There are a couple of players who will be spending their time behind the plate for Charleston. Ryan Toler is a Senior and 4 year starter along with Nick Barnes a 2nd year man who will bouncing from infield to catcher this year. The new catchers who will also will be in gear are Freshmen Sage Iacovone, Igor Molina, and Marshall Banks.

He had a break out with a .345 batting average out of 142 at bats. Armstrong also finished the season ranked 2nd in the WVIAC with 18 hit-by-a pitch‟s. Andrew will look to improve on his numbers as the coaches are looking to him to be a leader for the ball team. BIO: Nick Barnes is one of four players remaining on the Eagles roster that came into the program in Fall of 2007. He was redshirted his freshman year and made himself into a stand-out player last season. Barnes has been positioned predominately at second base and third base. In the 2010 season Nick will spend a good deal of time behind the plate, as well as the infield. This upcoming Spring Nick will be looked to as a jump starter and playmaker for the Eagles. Proven to be an impact at the plate Nick hit a grand slam in a key victory over Ohio Valley and was named as the WVIAC player of the week. In high school Nick was an All-Region and All-District catcher and led his team to a victory in the 2007 Virginia State Championship.

BIO: Each season the Eagles have a designated “Cap.” This year Mike Dahl has naturally filled into the role. He has seen playing time in each spring of his Charleston career. After fitting into a outfield rotation Freshman and Sophomore year he became a true everyday player as Junior. Mike will have high expectations behind him as enters the season. Coaches will be looking for him to take over a game with a crafty catch in the outfield or a key hit such as his first career homerun at Ohio Valley last season. In high school Dahl was a three time All-Academic selection and a two time All-Conference and All-State outfielder. He currently holds seven offensive records at Shakopee High. Mike is the son of Kevin and Michele Dahl, and has a younger sister Danielle.

BIO: Steve Hadden is a young pitcher out of Villa Hills, Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. He did not see very much action last year due to an injury on his throwing elbow a season before. He did, however make one appearance on the road at Davis and Elkins. With a healthy arm and a years experience and knowledge under is belt Steve should make into a reliable pitcher. In his high school career his dependability is very evident as he helped lead his high school to two straight State Championship games. Steve‟s parents are Brian and Lori Hadden and they also have a daughter Heather.

BIO: John Hamrick is one of several Eagles from the Buckeye state. In his Freshman year John made 5 appearances for UC but was struck by a ball hit back up the middle. The injury kept him out the remainder of the season. However, Hamrick was able to use a medical red-shirt so he will not lose a year of eligibility. Last year John stayed healthy and finished the season with one of the best Earned Run Average‟s among Eagle Pitchers. His performance last season has proven Hamrick to be one the most reliable Relievers in the staff. In 2010 John will continue to make relief appearances and help close out John is the son of

BIO: Ryan Hathaway had a terrific first year in 2009. He came onto the team as an invited walk-on and waited his turn to play behind other outfielders. Ryan got his chance after the midpoint of the season, and made an impressive showing. Only playing in 27 games he had a respectable batting average of .281, mainly by using his natural speed. Ryan had a very decorated high school career. As a three-sport athlete he earned four All-League honors, three All-District, and was named two AllState in Ohio. The former Area Player of the Year was also recently inducted into his High School‟s Hall of Fame. Ryan‟s parents are Dan and Deb Hathaway, and Maurine Hathaway. BIO: Josh Lewis is one of Charleston's most experienced pitcher‟s in the staff. In each season of his career he has been called to the mound. Last year in a weekend series Josh had torn a ligament in his knee covering first base on a groundball. Lewis will be fit come spring and the coaching staff will call upon him to make an appearance with confidence. Josh played his high school ball for St. Alban‟s Red Dragons. There he was building a solid tennis career but Coach Nozica brought him back to the diamond to pitch for the Eagles. BIO: Michael Morency is a left handed pitcher for the UC ball club. He took a red-shirt his Freshman year and gained a lot from his year off. He came back the next season making nine starts out of ten appearances. He had a successful season and looked like a future phenome for the University. However, Mike had an Ulnar ligament tear in his throwing elbow. He had to undergo a pitcher‟s nightmare, Tommy John‟s surgery. Morency had to sit out all of last season as he underwent his year long rehabilitation. Mike is now healthy again and will make his way back to the mound. Mike is the son of Bob and Victoria Morency and he has a bother, Garrit and a sister, Meggan.

BIO: Will Pak is a Charleston native who actually spent his high school ball playing on UC‟s Triana Field. In his first year Pak slowly made his transformation from his playing days at Charleston Catholic High School to the highly competitive college season. Will saw very little action in the field last spring but was called upon in the route versus West Virginia State to make a pitching appearance. A freshman being asked to help get his team out of the inning in Institute, West Virginia is not an easy task but the former two time high school All-State player was able to hold his own. Pak will continue mold into a complete player in his days at UC. His parents are Kathy and Dave Pak.

When he came to the University Garrett was a two sport athlete, not an easy task. Garrett eventually chose baseball as his predominate sport. BIO: One of the freshmen in 2009 that made a big impact on the team was Andrew Stichter. He made his first career start in the season opener at Lenoir-Rhyne. During the weekend series Stichter proved he belonged in the lineup and he stayed there for the majority of the season. He has proven to make impact plays and has been able to jump start the team. In a crucial division game versus Bluefield State Stichter socked two homeruns and helped UC push towards a play-off picture. When recruiting Andrew Stichter Coach Nozica saw accolades such as voted team MVP, Leadership Award, and a former Rookie of the Year in his 9th grade season. All were qualities Coach Nozica wanted for his team. Andrew‟s parents are Lori and Gordan Stichter, and they also have another son named Matthew.

BIO: The Eagles pitching staff has one young pitcher looking for his break out season and may very well achieve it in 2010. Matt Thompson made ten appearances last year as a starter, a reliever, and on one occasion a closer. This is a young man who loves to compete and loves the power of the ball in his hand. He earned his first college win against Ohio Valley and is set for many more . Thompson will be making more starts for the Eagles but will most likely be called upon to relieve an inning or two. As a four year letterman in Fariview High School out of Ashland, Kentucky Matt earned four All-District selections and was also named All-Area. Matt‟s parents are Terry and Joyce Thompson. He also has two sisters Danielle and Rebecca.

BIO: One of two senior outfielders Lance Thurston has taken over a role of emotional leadership. He is a guy that has seen an extent of playing time over the past two seasons and cares greatly about the improvement of not only himself but of the team as a whole. Lance has flagged his share of fly balls in centerfield and has also been the first man called upon for pinch running. He will have to fill in both roles this season but his leadership around the rest of the team is his most important aspect he brings to the program. Lance is the son of Donald Thurston and Sharon Cortright, and he has two siblings Aaron and Alex Thurston.

BIO: Miles Yong is another St. Alban‟s pitcher for the Charleston ball club. After his Sophomore year many pitchers graduated, transferred, or became injured. This left Miles as the “Go-To-Guy” for the Golden Eagles. Miles again will be only returning weekend starter this year. Miles is a senior looked up to by his fellow pitchers and is anticipated to have a great season by the whole team. In Young‟s high school career he was a very well rounded ball player. Although it was his dependable arm and his savvy on the mound that gravitated the attention of Coach Nozica to St. Albans for another local area pitcher. He is the son of Kyle and Kelly Young and has a sister McKenzie.

The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) is a collegiate athletic conference that has historically operated exclusively in the state of West Virginia, but has now expanded into Pennsylvania. It currently participates in NCAA‟s Division II after making its move from the NAIA in 1994. The WVIAC currently has 16 members. Founded in 1924 the original members still remaining include, Alderson-Broaddus, Charleston, Concord, Davis & Elkins, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Salem International, Shepherd, West Liberty, and West Virginia Wesleyan. The Conference continued to expand later picking up Bluefield State and West Virginia State in 1955, and Ohio Valley in 1999. Then in 2006 Seton Hill University and the University of Pitt-Johnstown became the first out of state schools to be a part of the WVIAC since 1933. The Conference participates in championships in 16 different sports, men‟s and women‟s cross country, football, men‟s and women‟s golf, men‟s and women‟s soccer, men‟s and women‟s tennis, volleyball, men‟s and women‟s basketball, baseball, softball, and men‟s and women‟s track and field. With the prestige of the WVIAC some of the championships are hosted in some top facilities including Johnstown‟s Point Park is the host of the baseball tournament and the basketball tournaments are held in the Charleston Civic Center. The Presidents' Cup is awarded to the school that has the highest average score for sports sponsored within the WVIAC. Points are awarded based on finishes in the regular season of each sport. The number of schools participating for each championship also factors into the rating. The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the institution with the highest cumulative score as determined by a scoring method used by the league. Points are awarded based on the school„s finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the WVIAC. The WVIAC holds it‟s present headquartered in Princeton, West Virginia.

Commissioner Barry Blizzard has been at the helm of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since his appointment in November, 1987. Through his very able leadership as the conference's fourth commissioner, the WVIAC continues to enjoy national respectability and competiveness among the 16 member schools and 17 sponsored sports. One of the major accomplishments during Blizzard's tenure as WVIAC Commissioner has been managing the conference's transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, which occurred in the fall of 1995. He also oversaw the move of the conference headquarters to Princeton in 1987. Prior to NCAA affiliation, Barry held, at various times, a number of NAIA-related national and regional offices. One in particular was a term as president of the NAIA National Athletic Directors Association. Once in the NCAA, Commissioner Blizzard has become involved with its administrative matters and presently serves as the chairman of the Division II Awards Commissioners' Association. He also has served as the regional chair of the selection committee for the Disney Wide World of Sports Basketball Tip-off Tournament. In addition, Blizzard has helped structure a model conference format for Division II league offices. He currently is the chair of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee. Barry's work in the field of intercollegiate athletics has not gone unnoticed by peers. He has received a number of awards including the NAIA's National Award of Merit for work as president of the Athletic Directors Association and the seventh annual Mike McLaughlin Memorial Administrative Award which is the WVIAC award recognizing persons who have made outstanding contributions to the conference for a period of years. Additionally, a report he authored, NAIA Eligibility Rules, Time for a Change, was published in the spring 1986 edition of The Athletic Administrator, a publication of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Blizzard's background in intercollegiate sports and sports management has served him well to deal with the tasks of overseeing this league. Before taking on his present position, he was the athletic director and sports information director at Bluefield State College, for 11 years beginning in 1976. A two-year period as assistant athletic director and SID, preceded this. The Commissioner is a native of Bramwell, WV, and received his undergraduate degree at Bluefield State College. He earned a Masters in American History at Radford (VA) University. Barry lives in Princeton with his wife Vicki. They have two daughters. Amie Bolton is a resident of Pearisburg, Virginia, while younger daughter Emilie resides in Princeton.

* Denotes WVIAC Tournament # Dentoes North Atlantic Regionals

In 2009 the UC ball club spent more time on the road than usually is scheduled. The team made trips to Hickory, NC, Ft. Myers, FL, Port Charlotte FL, and as far north as Shepherdstown, WV.

The 2009 baseball season began on Valentine‟s Day weekend as the team traveled to face a very strong Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina. However it became a tough season for the Golden Eagles long before the season started. UC had lost 6 starting pitchers. The team saw the graduation of Eric Sehnal and Alex Shaw, UC‟s number one and two pitchers. Also departing from UC was Donnie Platt and Jeff Reed two starters who were expected to take the helm for the pitching staff. At this point the Eagles still had experience and capable pitching, but due to injury Michael Morency and Tony Musante were unable to participate. Charleston would have to expect a lot from its freshmen pitching and their ability to put up runs. The incoming class brought in a few talented pitchers and they were able to hold their own throughout the season. In regard for the other eight players on the field, the Eagles returned 6 starters and 10 lettermen. With the experience in the lineup the offense for the Eagles really came alive as the team was able to put up 247 Runs on 395 Hits. The teams fielding improved only slightly compared to the year before but became more reliable overall. With the new season there was a new group of players who would step in and help the ball club. From the first series Andrew Stitcher an infielder out of Inglis, Florida made his presence known. He had four hits against the nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne team and was turning double plays regularly. Ryan Hathaway was a walk-on at the beginning of the season but waited patiently for his time to shine. When he finally got his shot he took it and never looked back, earning himself not only a spot in the lineup but a scholarship by season‟s end. The pitching staff was going to be tested in every fashion and newcomer Matt Thompson rose to the challenge. Thompson was called upon often and will make more appearances in seasons to come. Along with Thompson in the pitching staff was veteran Anthony Pagano, who made a switch from the infield to the Bull Pen. Pagano surprised everyone as he took the mound and led the Eagles pitchers in several categories including Wins and Saves. The schedule for the Eagles was going to be tough, as they compete in the toughest division among the WVIAC (West Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Conference). The Eagles competed against six teams who made their way into the National Rankings. A few of these teams are Shepherd University, who later went on to win the WVIAC tournament in Johnstown, PA. The other top team the Eagles competed with was The College of Wooster. UC met with the Fighting Scots in Ft. Myers, Florida. The College of Wooster would later make their way to the Division III National Championship game in June. The team played hard and fought every step of the way. Returning starters took over new roles, players found new positions, and new players began new careers. The 2009 season did not end in a playoff birth for the Golden Eagles but it was not unsuccessful. A young team with it‟s new found knowledge and experience can now turn that into confidence and success in 2010!

The biggest rivalry for the University of Charleston is West Virginia State. The two schools are separated by 12 miles of distance and the Kanawha River. Charleston and State teams have been competing against each other for over 50 years! Coach Nozica of the Eagles and Cal Bailey of the Yellow Jackets first met in 1978 creating a strong familiarity between the ball clubs. After seasons of falling short in close games the Eagles were able to defeat the Yellow Jackets for the first time in over 8 years! Look for the Eagles to build upon last years series as they turn around the rivalry. 44 53

The University of Charleston hosted their home games at Watt Powell Park until 2005. In that year came the new downtown facility, Appalachian Power Park.

56

Appalachian Power Park is nearly

brand new ball park, opening its gates on April 14, 2005. The park is located on 601 Morris Street in Charlestonâ€&#x;s East End on the city. APP was constructed at a cost of 23 million dollars and holds a capacity of 6,200 Spectators. The park is the current home field for the West Virginia Power, a minor league baseball team in the South Atlantic League. As the field is owned by the city of Charleston the Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates open their gates to The University of Charleston and Marshall University for their use. The University of Charleston for many years has played their games on the grass of the local Professional teams. Before APP was built Watt Powell Park was host to the Charleston Alley Cats and the University of Charleston. The state of the art field and its stadium surrounds offer a tremendous game experience for players at the University. The only other school in the West Virginia Athletic Conference to play in a professional teamâ€&#x;s park is PITT-Johnstown. UPJ currently plays their games at Point Stadium, which is home to the Johnstown Johnnies and the WVIAC Tournament.

Field Dimensions Left Field: 330 ft (101 m) Center Field: 400 ft (122 m) Right Field: 320 ft (98 m)

57

A luxury not every team in the conference is able to have is two home fields. The University of Charleston will play their home games at Appalachian Power Park but throughout the course of the season, due to weather or other complications can rely on Triana Field. Triana Field, formerly called Blackwell Field is located only in short walking distance from the center of UCâ€&#x;s campus on 19 th Street SE. The team uses this facility for all of the practices but even for a secondary field it is still is superior to many of the other conference schoolsâ€&#x; every day facilities. Triana Field is a multisport complex with the schoolâ€&#x;s soccer field running from the left to centerfield side in the outfield. The UC Men's and Women's Soccer will use Triana for their home field, but due to renovations to the grass there has been a limit to the activity allowed on the field. The field is also used to conduct local area senior league competitions, youth soccer tournaments, and Charleston Catholic High Schools regular season games.

In 2007 the University opened their newest building, the Morrison Fitness Center. The fitness center is located on the river bank behind Eddie King Gym. Inside there is several lifting and cardio machines and free weight racks. The gym contains treadmills, exercise bikes, and a cardio room for any specific workout. As students workout there are flat screen televisions and music for their entertainment. The University baseball team will utilize the Morrison Center as they train in the off-season. Having a state of the art gym will help stay ahead of the competition this season. 58

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UC Baseball Continues to have a Geographical Diverse Roster

September 6, 2009 Andrew Armstrong CHARLESTON, WV This fall the baseball program at the University of Charleston is excited to bring in a new group of talented student-athletes. These young men have been drawn to University from all over the country but will now call Charleston home. Coach Lee Bradley and head coach Tom Nozica have always seemed to have a roster filled with geographical diversity and this year is no different. Some of the new incoming freshmen consist of Sage Iacovone from Hamilton, OH; Igor Molina from Coral Springs, FL; Ross Easterling from Logan, WV; Tyler Thaxton from Proctorville, OH; Andy Pagan of Syracuse, NY; and finally Connor Shehan a Colorado native who has just transferred from Kansas University. With this incoming class the baseball team will have a total of ten different states represented. In the past four years there have been over fifteen states represented by former team members. This is a credited to the time spent by the coaching staff in recruiting outside the area for talent. Speaking with Coach Lee Bradley over the summer about recruiting outside of West Virginia he said “we always like to bring in local guys but we have other sources outside of the state that we listen to very carefully as well.” He went on to say, “it is always good to find kids from other regions and bring them in to experience a school and town such as this.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UC Baseball 100 Inning Game Sept. 6, 2009 Matt Zak CHARLESTON, WV - The University of Charleston baseball team will be having a 100 inning fundraiser at Triana Field. It will be held Saturday September 12 at 1 pm. Money received from the event will go to field maintenance, hats, uniform, balls, and whatever else is left is put into the UC baseball fund for the program. Family, friends, and students are welcome to come and watch. Admission is free. UC baseball players were asked to mail 35 letters to family and friends. The letters asked for donations to the baseball team. The donation amounts go by innings played so it would be 100 times the number donated. Coach Tom Nozica says “Its tough fundraising in today‟s economy but it needs to be done.” There are a few rules, you are allowed 2 strikes. You are not allowed to walk, you either hit the ball or strike out. There are four separate teams, from the UC baseball squad. There will be two teams in the field and two teams at bat. The teams will be announced before the beginning of play. After teams are announced play will begin. The game is continuous, there will not be any stoppages of play. The 100 innings will be played in its entity. Pitching for the game will be a pitching machine, because of all the throws made it would be impossible for one or two players to be expected to perform that duty. Here‟s a little bit of history of the 100 inning event. This will be the third time in four years the UC baseball team has organized this event. This is a common main stay fundraiser used by the baseball program to raise money. The baseball team has received generous amounts of money from donators the past few years will continue this year. Mr. Nozica says “I am thankful to have wonderful players and families.” “Family is a important part of our team.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Opening Day Announced for Baseball November 19, 2009 Contact: Andrew Armstrong CHARLESTON, WV The schedule for the 2010 baseball has finally been completed. This upcoming season will once again start well before the arrival of spring. The Golden Eagles will open their season on February 20, in a three game series as they host California University of Pennsylvania. Speaking with Coach Nozica he believes “the matchup will be expected to be as bitter and cold as the weather." Last season the Eagles had opened their season on Valentine's Day in Hickory, North Carolina. The extra week should help the Eagles prepare more for the immediate tough task put in front of them come the 20th. The matchup between the California Vulcans and the Golden Eagles has always been one-sided in favor of Cal-U. However, in the 2008 season the Eagles swept the two-game set versus Cal U and kept them from making the regional play-offs. The dominating performance by the Eagles that day had been the first time a team from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference had come to Charleston and left without a victory in nearly ten seasons. In their return to Charleston the next season they came to make a statement, as they ran up the scores on UC in their weekend doubleheader. California has lost some significant players and major roles players in their starting lineup. UC's team feels they are at the best they have been in recent years, and looks to make this series a tremendous test for both sides. The venue for the game is currently set at the city's Appalachian Power Park. If there are any weather complications that do not permit the games to be played downtown they will be moved to Triana Field on campus at the University.

Andrew Armstrong October 18, 2009 UC Baseball Alum Back to Coach for Former Team

After the 2008 season the Eagles saw the departure of long time coach Glen Wilson. Brought in to fill in the opening assistant coaching spot was a former catcher at UC, Matt Bradley. There were several coaching duties he was responsible for right from the start. During games he was asked to coach at first base, and in practices he was to instruct the outfielders and catchers. However, Coach Bradley now runs the strength and conditioning program for the team and able to share his knowledge with the players because he graduated with a degree in Athletic Training and later became a personal physical trainer. Going into his second season as coach the fall offseason has been harder and more intense. Coach Matt Bradley is determined to take the talent gathered by head coach Tom Nozica and make them stronger and faster. “We have talent, we have potential, but we need to bring all of that potential out and get over the hump we face during the spring” said Coach Bradley. As a former alumnus of the University Coach Bradley wants to strive hard to bring success to the institution by using the knowledge he gained during his tenure. As the brother of the Assistant Head Coach Lee Bradley he is familiar with the program and the conference it‟s competing in. With the lack of success seen in the baseball program Coach Matt saw some changes and corrective action that needed to be made. Already some of his modifications have been put into motion. The team has recently established a strict offseason strength program. Early mornings the team is in the Morrison Center lifting, in Eddie King Gym running, or out on the riverbank doing boot camp-like work outs. These work outs are all designed by him and designed specifically for the baseball player. “A guy‟s got to do the right lift. Just because you can bench press 400 pounds, doesn‟t mean you can hit a ball 400 feet” said Coach Matt when asked about proper baseball-specific lifting. Despite becoming the drill sergeant of the team the players have taken a liking towards their newest coach. The players feel they can relate to Coach Matt Bradley more because he once was where they are now, which is going to class in Riggleman Hall and playing games at Triana Field. “He offers good advice and constructive criticisms when needed, and he still will have fun with the guys” said Lance Thurston, a senior outfielder at UC. As a coach it is important to help the team find success. As a coach for a former Alma Mater then it becomes crucial to strive harder for that success. Coach Matt Bradley is doing just that. He takes pride in his job and works hard to make the team work hard.

Andrew Armstrong November 7, 2009 Two UC Pitchers Overcoming Injuries and Make Their Way Back to the Mound Last season the University of Charleston baseball team, lost two pitchers to injury, and now they have worked hard to make it back to the mound. Michael Morency, a senior left-handed pitcher missed out on the entire 2009 season due to an elbow injury which required a very serious surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament. The local senior pitcher, Josh Lewis suffered a knee tear when making a play during an early April game, ultimately resulting in reconstructive surgery. Now they have gone through their respective surgeries and have successfully completed their rehabilitation, and will be back in uniform this spring. Josh Lewis‟s injury came in the late innings of a doubleheader versus Concord University. He was making his way over to cover first base as James Clarke was fielding a ground ball. Speaking with him over the course of his rehabilitation Josh seemed very optimistic at all times. “The surgery and everything went really well, and the „rehab‟ was simple. The doctors all said that everything was gaining strength better than schedule,” Josh told his concerned teammates this fall. Recently Josh has made it to a team work out in the Morrison Center weight room for the first time this season. Lewis took his medical red-shirt last year so he could come back this season and finish off his career. The injury sustained by Michael Morency was not as direct and abrupt as that of Josh Lewis. Michael pitched his sophomore and did very well. However, he later began experiencing a chronic pain in his throwing elbow. After seeing a specialist he got the worst news a pitcher could receive, a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Baseball players know this surgery as “Tommy John”, named after the famed major league pitcher. His surgery kept him out over two hundred days of baseball activity. “Even though it‟s the worst scenario for a pitcher, I‟ll be one hundred percent when we get back to school and one hundred and ten percent when I‟m back in the spring!” Mike proudly said as he spoke on his current progress last season. The rehabilitation for Tommy John is very difficult because patience is the best remedy and slowly building back strength is the only method. Morency took all of the doctors advise and took it day by day, and no is practicing every day and starting to once again work in the bull pen. “The goal was become a starter, it always has been. Then once I‟m out there again, I‟m there to win some games.” He said in a recent interview with his coaches. Mike has his head in the right place and is trying his hardest to get his left arm to back as well. Both of these young men‟s presences on the mound were deeply missed, because in their absence left only Miles Young as the sole pitcher with significant experience. The season however did not turn into a complete disaster as the incoming freshmen on the pitching staff were able arise to the challenge.

Matthew Zak 10/9/09 University of Charleston Website The University of Charleston baseball team has created an online store for UC baseball apparel. This site was created for fans and family to buy UC merchandise. Dixiesport is the domain to type in. From there the person needs a password to access the merchandise. This site is running from Nov. Ninth to Nov. Twenty-third. These deadlines are to make sure that they are received by Christmas. Their once was a time when family would not have the opportunity to wear UC merchandise unless given by the athlete himself.. That has changed with recent technology and this site offers a variety of options for a buyer. The site offers shorts, compression shorts, long sleeve t-shirts, short sleeve t-shirts, polos, hoodies, and shoes. The prices range from $9.99 to $52.00. Most of the clothes are made by Nike except for the compression shorts by Mizuno. These brands are top notice quality of clothing David Moreton says “I‟ve looked everywhere to find prices this good. I am definitely going to buy a few items on the site.” These clothes are the same quality as in major sporting goods stores, expect the UC store gets a great price from the manufacturers. This site is set up for temporary use to examine if people will use it. If the site succeeds, the team will add more merchandise to the current site. Coach Nozica says “If the site fails, we will discontinue the site.” This is the first online store the baseball team has ever had. Coach Nozica is looking forward to the response it gets from friends and family. Coach Nozica says “we would like to expand and make a bigger store, to create a place for all UC baseball fans to go and get UC gear.” The reason for this site is to create an awareness for the University of Charleston baseball team. Most parents of the players want to buy shirts from their kids to show their support. Until now the university never had anything like this until now. The UC baseball team might want to create a link from their official site to their merchandise site. All is dependent on the developments of the next to weeks. The UC baseball team is on the move and hopefully this site will catapult this athletic team to greater ideas in the future.

West Virginia State vs. UC rivalry Over the years West Virginia State has produced year after year of victories and championships for their baseball team, no matter who they faced in the WVIAC they would win and in most cases win by a lot. However slowly over the years a lot of teams have recruited well and raised the intensity of games. Including one team in the same city, the University of Charleston Golden Eagles. For the last nice years the University of Charleston haven‟t won a game against West Virginia State for nine long years. For the last few years, the scores have been a combined scored of forty to two. With the scores very lopsided some might ask why this would be considered a rivalry? Well for one, recruiting has been an issue for the hot talent to find in the surrounding area and out of state talent. There are many stereotypes about both universities‟ that evoke a lot of anger. One stereotype for West Virginia State is that they aren‟t as committed to academics as they should, while focusing more on athletics and winning. The University of Charleston has a stereotype of rich preppy boys that are stuck up and have everything handed to them. Either way there is a distinct tension between both schools that is creating a great rivalry. Both campuses are separated only by a few miles. So it would be an understatement to say that both university‟s are close buddies. The West Virginia State campus is in a bad part of Charleston next to a power plant and correction facility. The University of Charleston campus is in a totally opposite part of the city. It is on the river bank, over looking the beautiful state capital building. Thus producing the rich kids vs. the poor kids and the state players seem to feed off of that stereotype while making their play better. So it wouldn‟t be much of a surprise to say the state baseball team has won for the last nice years, except for last year, when the UC team won. The UC team ended the year on a high note and are looking to build off of their recent success. While the state team is looking to continue their dominance. We will see what happens in the 2010 season.
