Athletics plays a vital role in the life of the University and in accomplishing our mission. Teamwork, fitness, community involvement, competition, initiative, dependability, and leadership are some of the many life-long learning opportunities acquired through athletics. The university’s Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams provides growth experiences for student athletes and visibility for the university. We have a strong tradition of athletic success. We have championship teams and each year we are at the top of the standings for the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference President’s Cup and Commissioner’s Cup. Dr. Edwin H. Welch President .

President Dr. Edwin Welch Dr. Edwin H. Welch is a native of Maryland and earned degrees from Western Maryland College, Boston University School of Theology, and Boston University Graduate School. His Ph.D. is in social ethics and he is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. He also studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science and the Harvard Institute for Educational Management. To support his academic studies, Dr. Welch worked in the Executive Office of the President at The White House throughout the tumultuous decade of the 1960s, during the administrations of presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon.

Dr. Welch has served as a department chair at West Virginia Wesleyan College, an assistant dean at Lebanon Valley College, an academic vice president at Lakeland College, and a provost at Wartburg College. Since 1989, he has been President of the University of Charleston. During Dr. Welch's tenure, the University of Charleston has completed major fundraising campaigns; added its first doctoral program (pharmacy); opened a graduate school of business in downtown Charleston; reinstated football; constructed the seven-story Clay Tower Building (an information, technology, and science facility), the Robert C. Byrd Center for Pharmacy Education, four residence halls, a parking garage and a fitness center; expanded full-time enrollment; eliminated financial deficits; increased the endowment; initiated a colleague service-learning program; and enacted a wide-ranging transformation of the academic program to an outcomesbased focus called Learning Your Way.

Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. Zook began her tenure at UC on June 21, 2010. Educated as a physical therapist, Zook worked her way up through the academic ranks at Long Island University in New York, California State University in Northridge, CA, and Charles R. Drew University in Los Angeles, prior to joining the faculty at Wheeling Jesuit in 1998. At Wheeling, she began as an associate professor and director of the physical therapy department, became an academic dean six years into her tenure, and was promoted to her current post in 2005. Zook's appointment follows on several years of sustained growth at the University of Charleston, and an academic transformation that has visitors coming from around the world to investigate its curriculum.

Our History The University of Charleston was founded by the Southern Methodist denomination in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary in Barboursville, West Virginia, and became a college in 1889. In 1901, it was renamed Morris Harvey College in honor of a prominent donor. During the Great Depression, the college moved to Charleston to take advantage of the larger metropolitan area. As a result of the merger between the Methodist Church North and South, the college disaffiliated from the denomination and Morris Harvey College became independent in 1942. From 1935 to 1947, the college was located in downtown Charleston, holding classes in several separate buildings. During these years, the college grew steadily, in part because of a merger with Kanawha Junior College and an affiliation with the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. Recognizing the need for a unified campus, in 1947 construction of the present facilities began on the south bank of the Kanawha River. The Board of Trustees changed the name from Morris Harvey College to the University of Charleston on December 13, 1978. Today, the University still benefits from its location in the dynamic capital city and from the beauty of West Virginia's hills. Proximity to the seat of government, to the state's largest medical, commercial, and financial centers and to major research and manufacturing facilities provides excellent opportunities for experiential learning. The University serves the community as a focal point for numerous intellectual, scientific, cultural, athletic, and civic events. These interactions between the University and the community are vital to the achievement of the University's mission.

What began in 1993 is now entering its second decade of excellence. The accomplishments of Dr. Bren Stevens since being the head coach of the University of Charleston Volleyball program for nineteen seasons, has been nothing short of unprecedented. The list of accomplishments is long and cements the fact that there has been one constant to Stevens’ 19-year tenure at UC; unparalleled successes. Coach Bren Stevens will end this season with a career record of over 500 wins. Stevens is currently ranked as the 15th coach with the highest number of career wins that is still actively coaching in NCAA II. Bren’s teams have recorded seventeen seasons in which they have achieved more than twenty wins each year. Her penchant for prosperity on the court has also transcended into the regional community. Bren served for nine years as the Chairperson of the WVIAC Volleyball Coaches. Coach Stevens currently serves on the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Head Coaches Committee. She is also a member of the Hall of Fame Selection committee for the AVCA. Bren’s reputation which she built for her program in West Virginia extends far beyond the borders of her state. Stevens serves as a leader/teacher to other coaches through a mentoring program established by the AVCA. Bren has also spent five years serving on NCAA RAC Committees both in the Atlantic and Great Lake Regions. Bren has recently acquired the position as the Interim Athletic Director for the University of Charleston.

Compliance Coordinator Head Women’s Basketball Coach (2000 – present) Intensity is the word which best describes Coach Winn. As an athlete, a student, and a coach, she has always displayed concentrated focus. This focus has led her to numerous awards. As a player, she reached the epitome of all athletics—the Olympic Games. In both 1984 and 1988, she was a member of the United States Team Handball Olympic Team. During the ten seasons she has been at the University of Charleston, Coach Winn has created a true sense of team chemistry and positive work ethic claiming an overall record of 200 wins versus only 76 losses. During her first season at the helm of the Eagles, she managed to take a program that was 12th in the WVIAC in 2001 to a 6th place finish in 2002. The Golden Eagles were able to take another big step in 2003 by finishing 14-4 in the conference with an overall 20-10 record. Sporting a 23-8 record in 2004, the Eagles pushed onto the national scene by making a national tournament appearance losing their first tournament game to California, PA, the eventual national champions. While she is a passionate coach on the sideline, she is equally passionate about her players off the court. The Golden Eagles team GPA has never dipped below 3.2 and every senior who remained with the program has earned a degree from the University of Charleston. Coach Winn also believes in community programs involving her players in several projects throughout the year. Coach Winn is an intense coach who likes to push the phrase “positive demanding.” She believes in pushing her players outside their comfort zones, making them reach seemingly untouchable goals, but always doing this in a positive manner. She will be the first person to reward an athlete with a hug, a slap on the back, or words of congratulations. She will also be the first person to constructively criticize techniques and tactics.

Sports Information Director

(2010â&#x20AC;&#x201C; present) William McDaniel heads into his second year at the helm of the Golden Eagle athletic communication and marketing duties. McDaniel's duties include overseeing the daily operations of the sports information office, maintaining the athletic website, promoting the 16 Division II sports teams and managing all home sporting events. He will also oversee the athletic department's marketing initiatives ranging from sales to sponsorship execution. In his first year at UC the sports information department has grown to include a widerange of opportunities for fans to follow Golden Eagle athletics. Charleston has added live stat coverage for most sports, while offering live video and audio for football and basketball. In March of 2010, McDaniel launched the newly redesigned www.ucgoldeneagles.com as the in-depth home to University of Charleston athletics, which in a year's time has logged one million views. He is an active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida) and also of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA). In March of 2011, NACMA recognized one of Charleston's radio ad spots for basketball with a silver "Best of" award in the radio commercial division. William, a native of Winfield, WV, previously worked in the sports information office at Frostburg State University, located in Frostburg, Md, as Assistant SID during the fall 2007 thru Spring 2009 athletic seasons. He earned a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in marketing from Marshall University in 2007 and a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in business administration (MBA) in 2008 from Frostburg State.

Head Coach

John Paul Blankenship is a six-time WVIAC Conference Champion and joined the University of Charleston track and field program for his second stint with the program in 2011. As a student-athlete he earned three discus titles, two shot put titles, and one hammer title while at Concord University. Blankenship was a two-time Division II All-American in shot put, while also garnering Academic All-American honors. Blankenship also was an All-Conference football player with a year of Professional Arena Football experience, before pursuing his coaching career. As a graduate assistant at Concord University, he led the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to a cross country conference championship in 2007. To date, Blankenship has coached six NCAA National Qualifiers, 33 First Team All-WVIAC Conference Athletes, 20 Conference Champions, and a single WVIAC Cross Country Team Championship. Coach Blankenship is still active in track and field, finishing the indoor season 12th on the USATF indoor national championship list, and ranks 44th in the United States in shot put.

University of Charleston Facilities

The University of Charleston Track & Field Team use the UC Stadium for practice and home meets. Laidley Field at UC Stadium, which is also where home football games are held, is an 18,500 capacity athletic facility owned by the city of Charleston with the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s naming rights. Completed in 1979, the stadium was a rebuild of a previous facility. As part of a joint venture with the school board, UC invested over $1.5 million to replace the turf, add locker rooms and skybox, in exchange for access and naming rights.

University of Charleston Facilities

The University of Charleston athletes use the Morrison Fitness Center as their training gym. The first floor of the new facility houses weight machines, free weights, activity rooms as well as showers and lockers. Running/elliptical machines and activity rooms are located on the upper level. Morrison Fitness Center is also equipped with a state of the art sound system with four high definition televisions that are placed high on the walls to allow people on the 1st and 2nd floors to enjoy. A special wireless transmission system enables students to listen to the television broadcast through radio headphones.

Chair of the Department of Athletic Training

Dr. Ericka Zimmerman serves as the Chair of the Department of Athletic Training and the Program Director for the Athletic Training Education Program. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Allied Health from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, a Master of Science degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training from Indiana State University, and a Doctorate of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Marshall University. Ericka is a 2010 recipient of the NATA Service Award in recognition of her service to the profession of athletic training. In 2008 Ericka was recognized as the 2008 West Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association (WVATA) Educator of the Year. She was a 2007 Marquis Who’s Who of American Women. In March 2006, she was recognized as the 2006 WVATA Athletic Trainer of the Year. She was also selected as the 2006 Outstanding Young Alumni for Indiana State University’s Department of Athletic Training. Prior to arriving at the University of Charleston in 2002, Ericka served as the Head Athletic Trainer for Georgetown College (KY) from 1997 – 2002 and Instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies. She was the Head Athletic Trainer for Midway College and staff athletic trainer for Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center from 1996 – 1997. Her present professional involvement includes: Co-Program Coordinator for the 2009 & 2010 WVATA Annual Meeting NATA Board of Certification Nominating Committee member Co-Faculty Advisor, District III Student Senate

Athletic Training Staff

Coordinator of Clinical Services / Head Athletic Trainer Curtis Zeilenga is the Head Athletic Trainer for the University of Charleston providing athletic training services for football, men’s basketball, cheerleading, and golf. He received his bachelor’s degree from Azusa Pacific University (CA) and his master’s degree from Sonoma State University (CA).Prior to coming to the University of Charleston, he served as the Certified Graduate Assistant in the Sonoma State Athletic Training Room for two years and has since worked at the University of the Pacific for a year and the Stockton Lightning, a new Professional Arena Football team during their inaugural season.

Assistant Athletic Trainer Erik Brown is an Assistant Athletic Trainer for the University of Charleston providing athletic training services for volleyball, women’s basketball, rowing, and cross country/track & field. He received his bachelor’s degree from DePauw University (IN) and his master’s degree from Indiana University. Prior to coming to the University of Charleston, he served as a Strength Coach/Assistant Athletic Trainer in the Baltimore Orioles' system with their Class A Affiliate (Delmarva). He also served as a Certified Graduate Assistant in the Indiana University Athletic Training Room for two years working with softball, rowing, and cheerleading. He has also worked Athletic Training outreach with St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, IN for one year and interned with the Shelbourne Clinic in Indianapols, IN.

West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Founded in 1924, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) rates as one of the oldest leagues at the small-college level. The league's 15 member schools include: Alderson- Broaddus College, Bluefield State College, University of Charleston, Concord University, Davis & Elkins College, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Ohio Valley University, Shepherd University, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Wheeling Jesuit University. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Seton Hill University joined the WVIAC for the 2006-07 season. Pitt Johnstown and Seton Hill are the WVIAC’s first out-of-state members since 1932. The WVIAC moved into the NCAA Division II ranks in 1994 after a long affiliation with the NAIA. The conference was the only one in Division II to place a team in the national quarterfinals in men’s basketball, football and baseball during the 1998-99 academic year. In 2002 the WVIAC, along with two other conferences, became the first league to earn four bids to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. Alumni of conference members include West Virginia State’s Earl Lloyd (the first African-American to play in the National Basketball Association), Pitt Johnstown's John Murtha (former US representative), and Wheeling Jesuit’s John Beilein (current Michigan men’s basketball coach). The conference’s basketball tournament is one of the longest-running events in collegiate hoops; the 74th annual event was held earlier this year at the Charleston Civic Center. Attendance at the WVIAC tournament ranks among the highest in Division II. The conference also boasts a 10-station radio network for the tournament. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WVIAC during the 1981-82 academic year as the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association was absorbed. Currently, women’s championships are offered in softball, golf, tennis, track, basketball, volleyball, cross country and soccer. Men’s championships are conducted in football, cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and track. The league was recognized by the State Journal as one of “55 Great Things About West Virginia” in the magazine’s April 2007 edition. The WVIAC is headquartered in Princeton, WV.

West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Commissioner Barry Blizzard has been at the helm of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since his appointment in November, 1987. Through his very able leadership as the conference's fourth commissioner, the WVIAC continues to enjoy national respectability and competiveness among the 15 member schools and 16 sponsored sports. One of the major accomplishments during Blizzard's tenure as WVIAC Commissioner has been managing the conference's transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, which occurred in the fall of 1995. He also oversaw the move of the conference headquarters to Princeton in 1987. Prior to NCAA affiliation, Barry held, at various times, a number of NAIA-related national and regional offices. One in particular was a term as president of the NAIA National Athletic Directors Association. Once in the NCAA, Commissioner Blizzard has become involved with its administrative matters and presently serves as the chairman of the Division II Awards Commissoners' Association. He also has served as the regional chair of the selection committee for the Disney Wide World of Sports Basketball Tip-off Tournament. In addition, Blizzard has helped structure a model conference format for Division II league offices. He is a past chair of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee and currently serves on the Division II Membership Committee. Before taking on his present position, he was the athletic director and sports information director at Bluefield State College, for 11 years beginning in 1976. A two-year period as assistant athletic director and SID, preceded this. The Commissioner is a native of Bramwell, WV, and received his undergraduate degree at Bluefield State College. He earned a Masters in American History at Radford (VA) University. Barry lives in Princeton with his wife Jill. He and his late wife, Vicki, have two married daughters. Aimee Bolton and husband Jeff and Emilie Whittaker and husband Garret who reside in Princeton. Jill has one married daughter Ande Hubbard and husband Dan reside in Baltimore, MD.

West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the institution with the highest cumulative score as determined by a scoring method used by the league. Points are awarded based on the school's finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the WVIAC. WVIAC champions are determined by the regular season standings in sports that receive NCAA automatic qualification for the tournament winners. Tournament champions in all other sports are considered conference champions. The tournament winner is considered the WVIAC champion in sports with a divisional setup.
