#LONDON#3 As the commercialisation of London gathers pace, places which were previously vibrant areas to live, shop and work are gradually being changed beyond recognition. Further waves of towers are planned to hit London, affecting views to and from world heritage sites and the fabric of adjoining streets. The past will be made to disappear and what remains will struggle to maintain its local ‘colour’. Of course communities in London have been dispossesed, fractured and fragmented for many generations and mythology can outweigh practicality ‘All cities are geographical; you cannot take three steps without existing ghosts bearing all the prestige of their legends. We move within an enclosed landscape whose landmarks constantly draw us towards the past.’ Iain Sinclair 2006 The images in this book are taken on a walk on a rainy day in May between Spittalfields and London Bridge and are my attempt to capture the local ‘colour’ in both areas. The photographs are balanced between the individuals struggling to maintain a personal identity and the extremes of their environment. Mike Newton
