elcome to the 24th running of the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan. And what a show this year’s series has in store, because you are about to witness the highest level of competition ever to grace Canadian soil. Plus, we are working diligently to improve our delivery of information to keep you informed as the series develops through social media, television coverage and week to week race reports. Last year, the MX1 championship title wasn’t determined until the last round and last moto of the series between Matt Goerke and Colton Facciotti. Goerke captured the #1 plate by his consistent finishes at each round to secure his second national title. For 2016, who knows how many riders will be in the hunt once the last round arrives, because the number of riders who have the potential to hit the podium is incredible. Take your pick: Matt Goerke, Colton Facciotti, Brett Metcalfe, Mike Alessi, Vince Friese and Davi Millsaps are all expected to finish in the top three if not take a win. But you can’t discount Tyler Medaglia because the series’ underdog always seems to work his way to the front. And everyone is curious to see how Kaven Benoit performs in his first year in the big bike class. So how is it going to turn out? Beats me, I don’t even want to guess the top three. The MX2 class may be in the same boat. Now that Benoit is out, the title is for anyone’s to take. Cole Thompson has moved back to the MX2 class; considering he finished fourth overall in MX1 last year, I would say he is the favourite to win. However, there are a lot of speedsters behind him that think otherwise. New to the series and a former AMA Arenacross Champion, Jacob Hayes will have to prove his mettle outdoors, considering he will face MX2 regulars Jeremy Medaglia, Shawn Maffenbeier, Brad Nauditt and Dylan Wright who are all familiar with the majority of the tracks. As they say,

‘16 anything can happen in racing, so it will be interesting to see what takes place. With our online efforts, it will be the easiest year to follow the nationals from start to finish. With the introduction of Live Video Coverage of each round, thanks to our new partner Conx2share, viewers will be able to follow the action live on their mobile or home computer down to the minute. Our Facebook page (/CMRCMX) is one of the best in the motocross world, regular updates will be found on Instagram (/CMRCMX) and Twitter (@cmrcracing), live timing will continue (mobile.cmrcracing.com), plus our website (www.mxnationals.ca) will have race reports, results, and series standings updated every week. We’ve got it covered so it will be simple to track what’s going on from the first gate drop in Kamloops to the final checkered flag in Barrie. Even if you attended an event, you’ll be able to watch the race on national television to see what you may have missed. Fox Sports Racing will broadcast each one hour show domestically, RDS2 will be available for viewers in Quebec, and for our American neighbours that are fans of the series, MAVTV will bring the racing right into your living room. The number of staff hat make the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan run like clockwork keeps growing every year. Each and every one of them is the best in the business at what they do and their dedication to their job has never been outmatched. SERIES CHANGES FOR 2016 The Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan, sanctioned by CMRC, is entering its 24th year and it gets bigger and better every year. Our motto from the beginning is “Change for the Better” and that’s exactly what we’ve done…again. Two venues are making a return to the schedule in 2016, Pleasant Valley Raceway in Truro, Nova Scotia, and RJ Motosport Park in Barrie, Ontario. The mandate for each round is location, location, location. The Truro and Barrie rounds move us to major centers, which will attract even more spectators to the series, and are outstanding, national calibre venues with tracks that will be a challenge to every Pro. The most exciting news this year is the addition of Live Streaming Video through our new partner Conx2share. Download their app on your mobile phone or visit their website (www. conx2share.com) to view live televised coverage of each round of the series. The best motocross announcer in the business, Brian Koster, will host each show along with a special guest to give you live, lap by lap coverage that you won’t want to miss. FAN GUIDE WHY DO THE NUMBER PLATES HAVE DIFFERENT COLOURS?

This determines what class you’re riding. The MX1 Pro class uses black numbers on white backgrounds and the MX2 ProAm class uses white numbers on a black background. Occasionally you will see bikes that have black numbers on yellow backgrounds in the MX2 ProAm class. These riders normally compete in the amateur Intermediate class but are allowed to try to qualify for the MX2 ProAm class. A rider with a white number on a red background is the series leader in their respective class. All these colours make it very easy for the lap scorers and the fans to distinguish the class in which the riders race.

WHAT DOES THE BIG 30 SECOND BOARD ON THE STARTING LINE MEAN?

WHAT ARE THE CLASSES?

The 2016 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan are split into two classes; MX1 Pro and MX2 ProAm. The MX1 Pro class competes on the bigger 450cc machines; this class consists of riders that are considered to be the premier riders in the series. In this class, you will find riders like Brett Metcalfe, Colton Facciotti, Matt Goerke, Mike Alessi and Tyler Medaglia. The MX1 Pro class motos are 30 minutes plus 2 laps in length. The MX2 ProAm class competes on the smaller 250F (four-stroke) or 250 two-stroke machines. These riders are generally younger and less experienced than the MX1 Pro riders, although there are exceptions. The MX2 ProAm motos are a little shorter at only 25 minutes plus 2 laps, but given the lesser experience of these riders, the racing is quite intense and a little more unpredictable.

This is how a motocross race begins. After the riders are given a parade lap to inspect the track, they return back to the starting gates. The starting line official pans the line to see if the riders and their machines are ready to go. This is a rider’s last chance to delay the start. Once all riders are ready, the official hands the board over to the 30 second girl, who holds up it

WHAT BRAND OF BIKES DO THESE RIDERS RACE?

There are six main brands of motocross bikes — Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha, KTM, Husqvarna and Suzuki. Even though a sponsor may dictate the colour of a rider’s bike, the general rule is that Kawasakis are green, Hondas are red, Yamahas are blue, KTMs are orange, Husqvarnas are white and Suzukis are yellow. Although there might be a few subtle differences between the bikes, they are all very similar in power and performance. They all use a five-speed transmission, the clutch is always located on the left side of the handlebars, the front brake is on the right, the rear brake pedal is located by their right foot and the gear shifter is by their left foot. They all use a kick starter with the exception of KTM and Husqvarna, which have electric start.

up for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds she flips the board to display the 5 second board, then after 5 seconds she turns the board sideways. At this point the gate will fall within the next 5 seconds. This may sound complicated but for these experienced riders it is all pretty simple.

WHAT DO ALL THE FLAGS MEAN?

The officials use a series of flags to indicate to the riders the different situations that may arise during a race. The green flag, displayed at the finish line at the end of the first lap, means that the track is clear and the race is a go. However, if the red flag is waved, this means there has been an accident that needs the attention of all the officials and ambulance personnel, and the race will be stopped. If the red flag is given past the halfway point of a moto, the race will be declared complete and the riders will be scored as they were when the red flag was displayed. The yellow flag is a caution flag, which lets the rider know that there is a rider down ahead. A red cross flag means that not only is a rider down but that the rider requires medical attention. When

a rider sees a red cross flag they know that there is medical staff n the track and they have to use extreme caution; they are not allowed to have their wheels leave the ground over a jump. The white flag is given at the finish line indicating that the race has one lap remaining. A black flag means either the rider has done something wrong and the referee wants to see him, or there is something hanging off f his bike that is dangerous. The checkered flag means the race is over. With the long, tiring motos that these riders have to endure, this is a welcomed sight.

DO THE RIDERS CHOOSE THEIR NUMBERS?

The numbers from 1 to 99 are assigned to riders based on their overall points from the previous year. Newcomers to the series and those finishing outside the top 100 the previous year can choose any three digit number on a first-come first-serve basis.

HOW DO THE RIDERS CHOOSE THEIR STARTING GATE?

For each round of the series, the gate pick for the opening moto is given by the order in which the rider qualified the morning of the race. Each rider has a transponder attached to their bike to

time their laps. In the morning of the race a timed qualifying session is held and the rider with the fastest lap time from that session gets the first pick on the gate, and the remaining riders then choose according to their qualifying lap time. For the second moto of the day, gate pick is determined by how the rider finished in the first moto. This is a very fair way of staging riders as it rewards them for their first moto performance.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN A RIDER GETS THE HOLESHOT?

The holeshot goes to the rider that reaches the marked holeshot line past the first turn after the start. This brave, crafty rider gets the prestigious job of leading the pack around the track for as long as he can hold the position, plus he receives the Royal Distributing Holeshot Award. In the MX1 Pro class, the rider is rewarded $300 for the holeshot, and $200 in the MX2 ProAm class. If that same rider gets the holeshot in the second moto then he wins the Royal Distributing Triple Crown Holeshot Award and doubles his money. For instance, in the MX1 Pro class, they would earn $300 per holeshot plus a $600 bonus.

Kamloops, BC Whispering Pines Raceway June 4/5, 2016

As we kick off the 2016 season in style, the series once again travels to beautiful Kamloops, BC for the opening round. Every rider in the series loves the Whispering Pines track with its sandy soil and challenging layout. This circuit will definitely provide everyone with a tough track to begin the 2016 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals. The Whispering Pines track itself is on flat ground with some man made rolling sections. Prior to last year the track has gone through a few changes, which lengthened the lap times to well over two minutes. The new track uses fresh dirt and is much more spectator friendly. The soil is sandy on top but has a hard base. This means that it will

get really rough like sand tracks typically do, but will also form hard, sharp-edged holes that is hard on a rider’s upper body. There are some really fast straights where the riders must remain focused, especially on the larger and more powerful 450 machines where speeds can reach over 80KPH. Sometimes riders like to ease into a series and not have to face a really tough track until they feel comfortable, but this will not be the case in 2016 as Whispering Pines Raceway will test each and every rider from the moment the gate drops. Also, with the potential for warm temperatures in the Kamloops area, this opening round could be one of the toughest in history.

Formally the host of the opening round of the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals, for 2016 The Wastelands in beautiful Nanaimo, BC will once again welcome the second round of the series. While not every rider finds success on this track, there is not one person who doesn’t enjoy visiting the Nanaimo area. The Nanaimo Motocross Association has always done a great job each year preparing their facility and track, and this year is no different. The Wastelands has a group of very enthusiastic club

members involved in hosting this event, and each year the National is the must-attend event on Vancouver Island. Originally, the track was tight and tough to pass on, however over the years it has been lengthened and modified to accommodate the fast bikes that participate in both the MX2 and MX1 classes. Even with the changes, the Wastelands track always provides great racing and some of the best scenery of the series.

Calgary, AB Wild Rose Motocross Park June 18/19, 2016

The Wild Rose Motocross Association, that runs the track in Calgary, are fortunate to have a track that is unique in the motocross world. The track is located minutes from downtown Calgary, a city of a million people! The location is so rare for newcomers to the track because it feels odd driving into a motocross oasis in the middle of a city. This track is a rider favourite as the loamy soil and huge jumps make it a lot of fun to ride. Maybe this is one of the reasons why the Wild Rose track has provided some

of the best battles that we’ve ever seen over the years. Every time the series visits Calgary something exciting always seems to happen. If we think back to a year ago, the fans in attendance got to witness Brett Metcalfe go from outside the top twenty to first in moto two of the MX1 class. With great spectator viewing and the skyscrapers of Calgary in the background, this round of the 2016 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals is sure to be one of the most entertaining of the series.

Moto Valley Raceway is a unique one for the riders because of its elevation changes and breathtaking jumps. Located just northeast of Regina, this track returned to the series two seasons ago after a brief hiatus, however Mother Nature didn’t co-operate as it rained for most of the weekend. This track, when dry, is not only fun for the riders but it’s also terrific for spectating as there are a number of great vantage points. The soil is prime, dark topsoil that holds moisture and presents a challenge to riders once ruts form in the fast straightaways. The corners form lots of long ruts, which again are tricky with the high speeds. Riders definitely need to stay focused on this fast

circuit as one mistake could spell disaster. Regina is the last western round before the series travels east. All of the riders want to head into the short break with a lot of momentum and positive results before they have to face the rough and sandy tracks of the second half of the series. For those of you who were lucky enough to attend last year’s race, you’ll remember the absolute epic battle between Brett Metcalfe and Matt Goerke in moto two of the MX1 class. For the entire length of the 35 minute moto, these two top riders were so close that you could’ve thrown a blanket over them. Hopefully the fans will get to witness the same type of intense racing in 2016.

oming into last summer, Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha rider Matt Goerke was a little bit of an unknown entity. Although he was a past Canadian MX1 Champion in 2012, Matt went to Kamloops having only spent a week practicing on his Yamaha. This was due to an injury suffered just a month before Round 1 of the 2015 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals presented by Motovan, an injury that wasn’t too serious but did impede his preparation. After starting slow in the western rounds, Goerke began to get stronger and more confident as the summer went on, and by Round 5 at Gopher Dunes, he was ready to make a run at his second MX1 title. All through the heat and grind of the eastern rounds, Goerke did what he had to do to maintain his points lead over Colton Facciotti and Brett Metcalfe, including the stressful task of putting his chain back on when it derailed in the early stages of a moto in Moncton. Despite all of that adversity, Goerke held strong and claimed the 2015 MX1 Championship during the final moto of the ten round series. Now, Matt Goerke and his team are back and ready for yet another battle this coming summer. After a very successful off-season of testing

and training, Goerke is coming into 2016 healthy and ready to win the moment the gate drops in Kamloops on June 5th. With his old rivals, as well as a few new ones added to the mix, Goerke knows that defending his #1 plate may actually be harder than winning it last year. However, as he proved to everyone in 2015, facing adversity is nothing new for Goerke, in fact, the seasoned Floridian embraces it! We managed to catch up with Matt Goerke to get his thoughts on the summer ahead. MXP: I guess the first question everyone wants to know is how has the preparation been going so far for 2016? MG: It’s been great! I have never prepared this long for an outdoor series. I even had some Canadian training partners for a few months Shawn Maffenbeier, Dylan Wright, and Keylon Meston. We’ve been putting in a lot of work. MXP: That‘s great that you’ve been able to train with a few other Canadian riders. You had a little setback in the fall last year, can you talk about what happened in Europe? MG: Yes, I went over there for a race and had an unfortunate get-off. Everything was going good in the first moto and then the bike blew up right

on the face of a jump. It was like a bad dream. I remember flying through the air and then waking up in the medics’ unit. I will not go to a race like that again without taking my own mechanic that I trust. MXP: Did you end up having to have surgery? MG: Yes, I tore my rotator cuff eally bad. Luckily I had some great doctors and therapists when I got back to the USA so between Dr. GreenBaum, Dr. Edwards, Lee Ramage, and Michelle at Rancho Physical Therapy, I healed faster and better than any of them had ever seen from an injury like that. MXP: Looking back, no one wants to ever get injured but it did give you some forced time off the bike to refresh. MG: Yes, it did for sure. I’m bummed I missed racing Supercross but I’m so ready to race now. Taking that much time off tarted to drive me crazy. It seems like it’s taking so long for the opening round in Kamloops to come. MXP: You came into Round 1 last year still recovering from an injury. How long did it take you before you felt you could win? MG: I broke my collarbone four weeks before the

first round so I only rode the bike for a week before the first race. I was also switching from a 250F to a 450F so it was a little rushed. However, my team was able to get me comfortable and set up very quickly. I felt good at Round 2, actually. I won the second moto and was battling for the lead in Moto 1 when I stalled it. But then the following two races I felt a little off ntil the final moto at Regina. MXP: For sure, it definitely appeared like that moto in Regina was a turning point for you? MG: Yes, I definitely stepped it up in that moto and that was the turning point. Our Team Manager, Adam Robinson, made a shock change before that moto too that made me much more comfortable.

MXP: What are your thoughts on the four Western tracks? MG: I like them all, for sure. They’re all very different with their soil and layout, but overall I enjoy racing on them. I’ve always done well in the west so hopefully I can get off o another good start. MXP: One new thing for you in 2016 is that you will have a brand new teammate in Brett Metcalfe. How has that been going? MG: Very good so far, we tested together during the off-season and got to know each other. I think we have a very good team this year and it’s going to be fun.

MXP: Then you dominated the following round at Gopher Dunes and got another huge boost. Can you give us any of your sand riding tips? MG: I’d love to but I’m not giving out any of my secrets in the sand. (laughs)

MXP: You two are both tremendous competitors but you have different personalities. Is it going to be tough to have one of your biggest rivals under the same tent? MG: I don’t think so! We’re great competitors but we get along well. I think we can race each other hard on the track and know that neither of us is going to do something stupid.

MXP: Other than maybe the two tough motos at Gopher Dunes, was there a moto that stood out in 2016 as one that was really tough? MG: Definitely the second moto at Deschambault was very tough. Metcalfe, Facciotti and I were all battling hard for the entire moto. It was a lot of fun but also extremely challenging.

MXP: It’s definitely going to be entertaining for everyone to watch. Since you’re coming into Round 1 much healthier than in 2015, will your strategy be different this year? MG: Yes! Last year I had to work my way into shape, this year I’ve been training very hard so I expect to win from the beginning.

MXP: That was a great moto for sure, one of the best of 2015. So now we’re on to a brand new year and you have the big #1 on your bike. You must be really excited to get this series underway. MG: For sure, like I mentioned earlier, it’s been a long off-season and now I’m very hungry to go racing.

MXP: Thanks for doing this Matt. I know I speak for all Canadian race fans when I say that it’s going to be an incredible summer of racing. Best of luck! MG: Thank you for calling. I can’t wait to see all of my Canadian fans right across the country this summer.

n the months leading up to the 2016 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan, fans and media alike have been drooling at the thought of how exciting the MX1 class is going to be this summer. With riders like Brett Metcalfe, Colton Facciotti, Davi Millsaps and last year’s champion Matt Goerke, at any one time there could be at least six riders that can win. From Kamloops to Regina, these MX1 riders will be tested as they never have before. As well as seasoned MX1 veterans like Goerke, Facciotti, Metcalfe and Alessi, this class will also feature MX1 rookies like Kaven Benoit, and Vince Friese. These riders will have to adapt very quickly to the big 450 machines, as well as the intensity of racing in the premier class. Additionally, the veteran US Supercross ace Davi Millsaps will be making his debut at the Canadian Nationals. When the gate drops in Kamloops for Round 1, the ground will be shaking as the most talented group of MX1 riders ever to line up in Canada blasts off. Another item that all of the MX1 riders will have to deal with is the diversity in track conditions of the western rounds. At Round 1 in Kamloops, the riders will be tested with a very rough, sandy track, which will test their endurance right from the first gate drop. At Round 2 in Nanaimo, the conditions will be hard packed and relatively smooth. At the third round in Calgary, the riders will have to navigate severe elevation changes and massive jumps before the western swing concludes at the high speed track in Regina. If the MX1 riders want to have successful rounds in the west of the 2016 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan, then they’ll have to be focused and prepared to adapt quickly to changing track conditions. As we’ve done for the past two years, we called upon Ryan Lockhart to give us his predictions as to who might take the top five positions during the opening four rounds of the MX1 class.

1 MATT GOERKE ROCKSTAR ENERGY OTSFF YAMAHA TEAM

Matt Goerke really impressed me last year. In my mind, he came into the series extremely underprepared, but showed so much heart right from the get go. Regardless of where he started in each moto, he always found a way to the front quickly and never really finished off he podium. I believe his preparation is much better this year, and even though there will be guys that can beat him in speed, no one can beat his heart and grit to win back to back titles. Obviously, with the added competition that Matt will be facing in 2016, defending his MX1 title is going to be very tough. However, I believe he will be the points leader when the series concludes at RJ Motosport Park in Barrie, Ontario.

BRETT METCALFE ROCKSTAR ENERGY OTSFF YAMAHA TEAM

It’s my feeling that throughout the 2016 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals Brett will be the fastest rider. He was last year and that won’t change this summer. I like the fact that he has switched to the Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha team during the off-season; I think change is good. So you may ask why I think the fastest guy won’t win the championship? I believe that his inability to consistently get good starts will hurt him as they did in 2015, and unless he can improve on them this year, he will have a hard time coming through the pack with the amount of depth in this class. Racing the Australian Nationals this past winter will help big time. As long as he can start in the top thee he will win. I think the 2016 MX1 title will be a toss-up between Metcalfe and his teammate Goerke.

COLTON FACCIOTTI HONDA CANADA RACING FOX GDR HONDA TEAM

It’s really tough to put Colt in this position, because we all know a healthy Colton is a serious threat for any championship. Last year he came in very underprepared because of a pre-season injury, but once he got things figured out he won the last three Nationals and only lost the championship by a mere six points. He will need to get moto wins right off he start if he wants to contest for this MX1 championship. Colton can’t afford to be a slow starter this year, he will need to be in it to win it right from the start, which we all know he can. I also believe the first two tracks of the series really suit Colton, so he should be fast right out of the blocks. Just like Chad Reed in Supercross, when we’re talking about the Canadian Nationals, you can never count out Colton Facciotti. Although I think that he may come up just short of the MX1 title again in 2016, he will be in the fight right until the final moto of the series.

MIKE ALESSI MONSTER ENERGY ALPINESTAR KAWASAKI TEAM

It’s so awesome to have Mike Alessi back in Canada for 2016. Mike has a huge fan base and adds the spice that is perfect for the Canadian Nationals. What’s going to be odd is seeing Mike on a new bike and with a different team. I believe he’s going to win a lot of races and be in the title hunt all summer long, I just don’t know if he will have the consistency needed in the early stages of the series to make a run at the title. As we all did in 2014 when Mike was racing in Canada, I’m sure we will marvel at his raw speed, especially in the early stages of each moto. For the past decade, Mike has been one of the best starters on the planet and I’m sure that won’t change in 2016. As I mentioned before, Mike Alessi will add a lot of excitement to this series and I can’t wait to see how he does.

In closing, this was by far the most difficult series to predict as it will be the most competitive year ever in Canadian Motocross. In addition to my top five picks, I would also throw in Tyler Medaglia, Kaven Benoit, and Vince Friese into the mix. These three riders are all capable of winning motos and being on the podium at every round. Like everyone else, I cannot wait for the 2016 MX1 series to get underway as I’m sure it will be one for the ages.

5 DAVI MILLSAPS KTM CANADA THOR RACING TEAM

I honestly feel a little strange putting Davi Millsaps in fifth overall in this MX1 series. After all, Millsaps is a former Supercross Lites Champion and a 450 main event winner. However, he’s coming off a ew serious injuries that have knocked him out of the last few series he’s entered. While he’s without a doubt the biggest name to head north to compete in our serious, I think it will take him some time to figure out the tracks and how things work in Canada. Hopefully he is healthy and 100% committed to winning this title. If he is and if he can get some wins early in the series, he will be a title threat this summer. Regardless of where Millsaps finishes in the final standings, it’s truly on honour to have him in Canada and hats off o the KTM Canada Thor Racing Team for making this deal happen. I’ve spoken to a few people in the USA who know Millsaps better than I do, and they all agree that he’s capable of doing whatever he puts his mind to.

s we head into the 2016 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan, in the MX2 class we have many questions and very few answers. Like we saw last year, this class is full of young and aggressive riders who are all trying to make a name for themselves. While consistency may not always be front and center with these young riders, the MX2 class will most certainly be exciting to watch all summer long. Beginning at Round 1 in Kamloops, the MX2 riders will get tested right away as they will be sure to find Whispering Pines Raceway extremely challenging. From there they follow the setting sun west to the hard packed soil of Nanaimo, before returning east to Calgary for Round 3 and then the final western round in Regina. All four of these tracks will test these MX2 riders to the fullest and only the smartest rider will take the points lead into Round 5 in Gopher Dunes. For 2016, the battle for the MX2 Championship may come down to a battle between young and very aggressive riders Cole Thompson, Jacob Hayes and Jeremy Medaglia. All three riders have won titles in Arenacross, but they’re all looking for their first outdoor championship. Right from the first gate drop in Kamloops, the battle for this 2016 MX2 title is going to be an all-out, knock down fight that will go down to the final moto of the series. If you love to watch fast and very aggressive riders go at it on the track for 30 minutes, then you don’t want to miss the racing this summer in the MX2 class. For a different take on which riders might make the top five, we’ve turned to newly appointed MXON Team Manager and Cycle North Motorsports owner Kourtney Lloyd to give us her expert opinion.

1 COLE THOMPSON KTM THOR RACING TEAM

I am really excited to see Cole race the MX2 class this year, and with the Factory KTM team behind him, there is no question that JSR will have a strong program for Cole. He had some bad luck in Supercross earlier this year, however I think with him being on his home turf and on tracks that he is comfortable with, he will excel. Cole has a huge support system and his confidence and talent will help get him to that top spot. The biggest thing I believe Cole will have to battle this summer is the weight of expectations as many think he’s the favourite to win this title. He will also have to battle his AX nemesis from last fall, Jacob Hayes, as well as the highly motivated GDR Honda rider, Jeremy Medaglia. Cole needs a solid start to this series if he hopes to win the 2016 MX2 Championship.

JACOB HAYES MONSTER ENERGY ALPINESTAR KAWASAKI TEAM

I had the pleasure of meeting Jacob this winter and wasn’t sure what to expect based on my Twitter feed. I was very mistaken. Jacob was a very mild mannered and well-spoken rider, and was a total professional. His talent on the track is like nothing I have ever seen. Monster Energy Alpinestar Kawaski has a solid program, and the long standing guys like Jason, Frenchie and Graeme will ensure that Jacob has the equipment and support to keep him on the box. For the past few years, Jacob has been an AX specialist, however with the people that I’ve spoken to, this kid knows how to race outdoors as well. Although Jacob will be racing on tracks that he’s never seen before, with his youth and talent, he will be a very quick learner. This battle is going to be very exciting to watch for sure.

JEREMY MEDAGLIA HONDA CANADA FOX GDR TEAM

Jeremy had strong finishes last year and was impressive in the west with 2-2-3-2 finishes. I think Jeremy is coming into this season stronger and on more of a mission than previous years. If Jeremy can stay focused and not let outside distractions get to him, I believe he will have an impressive showing at the western rounds. The GDR Honda program is stronger than ever and Jeremy feels at home there. I feel this is important because Derek Schuster does a fantastic job of making sure the riders have nothing to worry about except getting on the box. I don’t see that being an issue for Jeremy. There is no doubt that Jeremy will be very fast this summer, however, if he wants to win this championship then he must limit his mistakes and make the most of his bad days.

RACING KTM TEAM

Shawn showed us last year that he has what it takes to finish on the podium, and he has the speed and conditioning to continue that trend into 2016. Shawn has switched to Redemption Racing KTM for this season and feels comfortable on the bike and with the team. Shawn doesn’t let much get to him when it comes to other riders. He focuses on his own race, and as long as he can get out of his own way mentally, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with. Shawn is a fan favourite as he always gives 100% on and off he track. MX101 FXR RACING YAMAHA TEAM My 5th pick is going to be split between two riders as I just can’t decide between them: Dylan Wright - Dylan has had a full winter of training down in California, which is nothing but a good thing for a rider. I have seen videos of him from this past winter and the kid is on fire! I have huge respect for Dylan and the MX101 program. I am sure that Dylan will have podium finishes and come into the season ready to go. Dylan is one to watch for sure. Jess Pettis - Jess was picked up by Kevin Tyler and the MX101 Team for 2016. This is an exciting move for Jess; I do

not think there is a better fit for him than this. The team is a phenomenal group of people and will have nothing but the best for Jess. Jess is as strong this year as I have ever seen him, and his fitness and conditioning are the best I have seen from him. Jess went down to Georgia this past winter to train with Colton Facciotti, which is a fantastic move on his part. Jess normally battles the Northern BC winters and does not get as much seat time, so for him to get to train during the long winter months, I am excited to see him coming into the series prepared as ever.

hen we speak about the very cool things happening in 2016, we definitely have to talk about the 2nd Annual KTM Super Mini Nationals. This three round series will again be separated into Eastern and Western rounds with a champion being crowned on both sides of the country. The two moto format will take place on the Saturday before the pros take to the track on Sunday. This will give the young riders a chance to race on the same track as their heroes and then hopefully stick around to watch those same heroes battle the following day. The KTM Western Canadian Super Mini Nationals will kick off n June 4th in Kamloops in what is sure to be a grand event for everyone involved. From there, the Super Mini riders will follow the same path as the CMRC Western Canadian Women’s Nationals with stops in Nanaimo and Calgary the following two weekends. For the Eastern swing, which is also presented by KTM Canada, the Super Mini riders will have their skills tested at their first round at Canada’s toughest track, Gopher Dunes, on July 9, 2016. From there they will not leave the sandy soil of Eastern Canada as their series heads to Ulverton, QC, and then they wrap up at one of the new stops of the Canadian Nationals, RJ Motosport Park in Barrie, Ontario, August 13th. To help make these two titles as prestigious as any in Canada, the winners of both the Western and the Eastern Super Mini Championships will each be awarded a brand new 2017 KTM motorcycle as well as a parts credit to use at their local dealer. Even though these fast kids will win trophies throughout this very cool series, the real jackpot for these talented kids will be the exposure that comes with competing at a high profile event like the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan. When these young riders line up their 85cc to 105cc motorcycles on the starting gate, a lot of eyes will be watching to see who might be the next Kaven Benoit or Cole Thompson. These riders will also be receiving National coverage via Conx2share’s live streaming video streaming broadcast for each round. This series gives our young riders an incredible opportunity to not only perform on a large stage but also to learn what it’s like to compete at a high profile event where the pressure can be immense. With names like Jacob Piccolo all set to compete in the KTM Western Canadian Super Mini Nationals, and Jake Tricco ready to battle in the KTM Eastern Canadian rounds, the stage is set for some incredible racing right across this country.
