Attention all Moto Fans! This year will mark the beginning of a new era for Pro motocross racing in Canada. We have secured a new title sponsor for the series, a long time industry sponsor is stepping it up, an additional round has been added to the series, there’s a new venue in the west, live music and freestyle motocross has been added to the national day’s slate at selected events, our social media is going through the roof, we have a new home for our TV broadcast, and the lineup of racers in each class continues to get better every year.

W

e’ll be partying like a rockstar in 2014 as Rockstar Energy Drink has taken on the role of title sponsor of our series. Rockstar has been a longtime supporter of motocross racing, and recognized the growth and attention the Canadian MX Nationals have recently experienced. Action sports and music are two main elements of which Rockstar Energy Drink has supported, so the Nationals are a natural fit. But wait! There’s no music. Not anymore! Four rounds of the series, two in the west (Nanaimo/ Regina) and two in the east (Gopher Dunes/ Moncton), will host live music with popular new rock groups, such as Tokyo Police Club, Yukon Blonde, Hollerado and USS, following the action packed day of Pro motocross racing. When you add freestyle motocross to the mix you get a festival atmosphere, or what we now call “MotoFest”. Music and FMX aside, there’s a list of Pro riders in both the MX1 and MX2 classes that is a who’s who of world class motocross racing, and when you put them all on the line at one, it makes for a day full of entertainment from the drop of every gate. Motovan Corporation, a major Canadian aftermarket distributor, has supported the series for over a decade and is also excited about the direction the series is taking. So much so, they have stepped up their role to become the presenting sponsor along with their participating OEMs. A former national venue will be hosting a tenth round of the Rockstar Energy Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan; Ulverton, Quebec has held national motocross races since the ‘70s, and their

rolling hills south of Drummondville will be a great addition to the series. Also returning to the schedule is Moto Valley Raceway in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Moto Valley track is a favourite to the riders, is located just on the outskirts of the growing metropolis of Regina, and has hosted some of the best racing in the history of the sport. We expect that trend to continue. If you haven’t done so yet, join our social media following for the latest news, contests and promotions surrounding the Pro Motocross scene. You can find us on Facebook (/CMRCMX), Twitter (/ CMRCRacing), YouTube (/CMRCRacing), Instagram (CMRCMX), Pinterest (/CMRCMX) as well as Google + and Vine. If you miss the racing live you, tune in to CHCH TV, found on basic cable, at 1:00pm in each region of the country, or CHEK in BC. We’re changing the format of our show to half hour episodes, which will make for the most intense half hour of racing you’ve watched. And if you miss that, the streaming video versions will be available on www.mxnationals.ca, www. cmrcracing.com, and www.mxpmag.com following each national broadcast. If you want to witness the best motocross racing in the country, watch insane aerial maneuvers on a motorcycle you never thought possible, or catch the latest hot act in music, the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan is your one stop shop to take it all in at once.

Best fuel economy of Any pickup ever. That’s right, ever. The All-New 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has gotten into the habit of making history. Earlier this year, it won Motor Trend’s 2014 Truck of the Year Award® – the second year in a row and the first time any truck has ever won it back-to-back. Then Canada’s only Light Duty Diesel pickup was rated as good as 7.1 L/100 km or 40 miles per gallon highway* – the best fuel economy ever recorded for a pickup truck. The super-efficient 3.0 litre EcoDiesel V6 engine is also powerful with unsurpassed 420 lb-ft of torque† and up to 9,200 lb of towing capability.• So if you want to save on fuel and get the job done every time, look to the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Otherwise, history might just pass you by.

FACES Andy White

Team Manager of KTM’s racing effort. Andy White is a long time student of the sport. From his early Pro racing days through several privateer efforts of his own with Suzuki and Honda, Andy has been around Canadian motocross for his entire career. He is like every other manager in the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals paddock - a passionate Canadian motocross fan.

Pat O'Connor

Pat O’Connor is the workhorse of the very successful Monster Energy / Thor / Kawasaki team. Through the week he is the team coordinator and manager, and on race day a full team mechanic. Days off are few and far between for Pat. When he does have the occasional day off, you can often find him…you guessed it, at the track

Josh Snider

Only a few short years ago Josh Snider was on the line battling each weekend in the National motocross series. His team, Redemption Racing, has always had a primary purpose on the racing circuit: his motocross ministry starts the day for teams and riders on Sunday mornings before racing. Redemption’s welcoming and supportive approach to all people has made them an important part of the fabric that is Canadian motocross.

Derek Schuster

The youngest of team managers on the series, Derek Schuster and the Honda Canada GDR team have the respect of everyone in the paddock. The team, in a few short years, has worked with a shoe string budget and turned it into a well branded team, capable of challenging for podium finishes each weekend. For 2014, Schuster finally has full factory support and the fastest Canadian rider, Colton Facciotti, as his top gun. We have a feeling that this year is going to be unforgettable for Derek and his team.

a t t h e

Iain Hayden

Even though most of his success has come in the rough and tumble sport of Snocross, the one thing Iain Hayden knows how to do is win championships. Iain brings all of his knowledge as well as a laid back and articulate personality to the track. Iain will be the man calling the shots with the Rockstar Energy Drink OTSFF Yamaha Team in 2014.

RACES Marc Travers

It’s hard to put into words just how much Marc Travers means to the modern day sport of motocross in Canada. Since 1998, Travers has been the man behind and in front of the camera for the series’ television production. Over the years Travers has definitely seen a lot happen in Canadian motocross and he brings this knowledge to each and every broadcast. After all, he’s practically made the word “Holeshhhhooootttt” part of the English language. .

PAUL KINGSLEY

Every sport needs a person that represents and enforces its rules. Head Referee Paul Kingsley is that individual at the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals. Kingsley’s no nonsense approach to the rulebook is both fair and consistent, and a lot of the times you’ll hear this sport’s athletes singing his praises. All the riders and teams know that the buck stops at him as he’s earned himself a lot of respect.

Kevin Tyler

A former Pro racer himself, Kevin Tyler is now the man in charge of not only managing the MX101 Yamaha Team, but he’s also guiding the young career of teen rookie sensation Dylan Wright. Kevin is a smart, level headed and passionate motocross guy who loves nothing more than being at or near a motocross track. It’s very rare not to see Kevin with a huge smile on his face in the pits.

Brian Koster

While Don Cherry has Ron Mclean as a sidekick, Marc Travers has Brian Koster as his main confidant. Koster has been around this sport for years and brings a knowledge of motocross that is virtually unmatched. Koster not only helps out with the television production but he is also the host of the Online Radio Show that broadcasts live from each round of the series. If you’re not able to make it out to a race, then you can go on the internet and listen to Brian Koster call each and every race.

Chris Pomeroy

“Palms”, as he’s known around the track, has been around motocross for 35 years and has seen the sport from every angle. Palms is another former Pro racer who now runs the editorial department at MXP Magazine and mxpmag.com. If you want to read about Canadian Motocross then MXP is the place to go. Palms loves to talk about the sport to anyone at any time, so if you see him around the paddock, please feel free to ask him a question.

WHAT A R E THE CL AS S E S?

The Monster Energy CMRC Nationals are split into two classes, MX1 and MX2. The MX1 class competes on the bigger 450cc machines; these are riders are considered the premier riders in Canada. You will see names like Kyle Keast, Colton Facciotti, Dusty Klatt and Bobby Kiniry. The MX1 class motos are 30 minutes plus 2 laps long. The MX2 class competes on the smaller 250F machines. These riders are generally younger and less experienced than the MX1 riders, although there are exceptions. The MX2 motos are a little shorter at only 25 minutes plus 2 laps, but given the lesser experience of these riders, the racing is quite intense and a little more unpredictable.

WHAT BR AND OF B I KE S DO THE S E R I DE R S R ACE?

There are four main brands of motocross bikes — Kawasaki, Yamaha, KTM and Suzuki. Even though a sponsor may dictate what colour a rider’s bike is, the general rule is that Kawasaki’s are green, Yamaha’s are blue, KTM’s are orange and Suzuki’s are yellow. Although there might be a few subtle diff erences between the bikes, they are all great. They all use a fi ve-speed transmission, the clutch is always located on the left side of the bars, the front brake is on the right side of the bars, the rear brake is by your right foot and the gear shifter is by your left foot. They all use a kick starter with the exception of the KTM 450, which is electric start.

WHY A R E SOME NUMBE R PL ATE S D I FFE R E NT COLOUR S?

This determines what class you’re riding. The MX1 class uses black numbers on white plates and the MX2 class uses white numbers on black plates. Occasionally you will see bikes that have black numbers on yellow backgrounds in the MX2 class. These riders normally compete in the amateur intermediate class but are allowed to attempt to qualify for the MX2 class. The Ladies class uses white numbers on blue backgrounds. All these colours make it very easy for the lap scorers and the fans to read.

2014-05-16 10:48 AM

DO THE R I DE R S CHOO S E THE I R NUMBE R S?

The numbers from 1 to 10 are mandatory to the riders based on their overall points from the previous year. Riders finishing 11-99 in points have the option of a top 100 number based on “first come-first serve.” Newcomers and those finishing outside the top 100 can choose any three-digit number on the first come-first serve basis.

HOW DO THE R I DE R S CHOO S E THE I R S TA R T I NG GATE?

For each round of the series the gate pick for the opening moto is given by the order in which the rider qualified the morning of the race. Each rider has a transponder attached to their bike, so the morning of the race a timed qualifying session is held and the rider with the fastest lap time from that session gets the first pick on the gate. For the second moto of the day, gate pick is determined by how the rider finishes in the first moto. This is a very fair way doing things and it ensures that all the riders and officials are happy.

WHAT DOE S I T ME AN WHE N A R I DE R GET S THE HOLE S HOT ?

The holeshot goes to the first rider out of the first turn after the start. This brave, crafty rider gets the prestigious job of leading the pack around the track for as long as he can hold the position, and receives the Royal Distributing Holeshot Award.

WHAT DOES THE BIG 30-SECOND BOARD ON THE STARTING LINE MEAN? This is how a motocross race begins. After the riders are given a parade lap to check out the track, they line back up at the gate. The starting line official pans the line to see if the riders and their machines are ready to go, this is a rider’s last chance to delay the start. Once all the riders are ready, the official hands it over to the 30-second girl, who holds up the 30-second board for 25 seconds. After 25 seconds she holds the board above her head for 5 seconds, after 5 seconds she turns the board sideways. At this point gate will fall within the next 5 seconds. This may sound complicated but for these experienced riders it is all pretty simple.

WHAT DO A LL THE FL AG S ME A N?

The officials use a series of flags to indicate to the riders the different situations that might arise during a race. The green flag, given at the end of the first lap, means that the race is a go. However, if the red flag is given, this means there has been an accident that needs the attention of all the officials and the race needs to be stopped. If the red flag is given past the half-way point of a moto, the race will be over and the riders will be scored as they were when the red flag was given. The yellow flag is a caution flag, which lets the rider know that there is a rider down ahead, a red cross flag means that not only is a rider down but that the rider needs medical attention. When a rider sees a red cross flag they know that there is medical staff on the track and they have to use extreme caution. The white flag is given at the finish line indicating that the race has one lap remaining. The checkered flag means the race is over and with the long, tiring motos that these riders have to endure, this is a welcome sight.

There’s not dust on us! Every year, the CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals makes changes for the better and this year is no different. The most noteworthy change to the series is the new title sponsor, Rockstar Energy Drink. Rockstar has a long history with motocross racing and has partnered with CMRC for what looks to be a long, mutually beneficial relationship. Rockstar Energy Drink targets the younger adult demographic, which explains their deep involvement with action sports and music. With the successful Canadian Motocross National Series and the addition of live music to selected events, the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals fits the bill to a “T”. To increase the entertainment value and attract a new group to motocross racing, the festival concept has been integrated into the series. Following the Pro motocross racing at the Nanaimo and Regina rounds, live music will be rockin’ the house down with bands such as Tokyo Police Club, Yukon Blonde, Hollerado and We Hunt Buffalo. Add to that the Rockstar Milot Land Freestyle MX Tour in Nanaimo and Kamloops, the “Rockstar Energy Drink Motofest” promises to be an event you can’t miss. With the increased interest and popularity of the series, it was time to add a tenth round. Ulverton, 15 minutes south of Drummondville, Quebec, has played host to motocross nationals since the ‘70s, and guaranteed it will be a great addition. It is a track adored by riders and especially the rambunctious French Canadian crowd. Now, Moto Valley Raceway in Regina, Saskatchewan will host the fourth round of the Western Canadian swing. The tour’s last visit to the prairies was back in 2008. Considering the growing interest of the sport in the province, Moto

Valley Raceway may just become a regular stop. With a new title sponsor comes a new look. An increase in professionalism in regards to the branding and appeal was at the top of the ‘To Do’ list, therefore, you’ll notice a few changes. A new 120’ x 8’ banner will be found behind the starting line, plus a new, branded truss system has been added to the stage. The finish line now has a new look with Rockstar Energy Drink cans placed on the vertical trusses, and in the pits, CMRC’s new 44’ administration trailer is a welcomed addition. New broadcast partners have been arranged for the television coverage of the series and a new format of the shows will be introduced. The CHCH national network and CHEK in British Columbia will air the MX2 class on Saturdays and the MX1 class on Sundays at 1:00pm and 2:30pm respectively starting Saturday, July 5th. These stations can be found on basic cable so more viewers will have the chance to catch the best motocross racing coverage in the world! To keep up to datge with news, results, photos and videos that encompasses the series, there is now a new website to visit – www.mxnationals.ca. Plus, if you can’t miss the race and are Jonesin’ for live coverage, we are re-introducing the live audio broadcast hosted by the best announcer in the business, Brian Koster. Visit www.mxnationals.ca or www.mxpmag.com to tune in to the audio coverage and to watch live lap times. We hope you appreciate and enjoy the changes and additions we’ve made because we want you to have the best experience when attending our motocross racing events. Thank you for your continued support!

ROUND 1 Nanaimo, BC The Wastelands May 31/ June1, 2014

The Nanaimo Motocross Association does a great job each year preparing their facility and track, and this year will be no different. The Wastelands has a group of very enthusiastic club members involved in hosting this event, and each year the National is the mustattend event on Vancouver Island. Originally, the track was tight and tough to pass on but it was lengthened over the years to allow the more powerful 450F machines to open up. The track has some traditional jump sections that never change, but each year the club and track designers put new twists on corners and add some technical sections for the Pro National. Weather is the big mystery at the Wastelands because when it rains, as it did in 2012, it can be a tough race to finish. However, the track conditions can quickly turn around with clear skies and a mountain breeze. There is no better view in motocross than from the top corner of the raceway as it looks out over the City of Nanaimo and the open water. With this being the opening round of the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals, every rider will be looking to get off to a great start in this ten round series.

S

ROUND 2

Kamloops, BC Whispering Pines Raceway June 7/8, 2014 The second round is an exciting round for many reasons. Several key race teams and industry personnel base themselves out of the Kamloops area including the Monster Energy Thor Kawasaki team, so there is always lots of enthusiasm and pride on the line at this event. The track itself is on flat ground with some man made rolling sections. The track was all new in 2013 as some of the nasty, rough sections were taken out like the infamous “Road to Baghdad”, which was a gruelling sand section that was completely bombed out. The new track uses fresh dirt and is more spectator friendly. The soil is sandy on top but has a hard base underneath. This means that it will get really rough like sand tracks typically do, but will also form hard, sharp-edged holes that are hard on a rider's upper body. There are some really fast straights where the rider must remain focused, especially on a 450F, so they don't hit one of the holes at top speed. Set up is tough to nail down, so teams pay attention to their bike's performance. By the second round, riders have shaken out the nerves from the series opener and begin to settle into the long battle ahead. Kamloops brings the heat, figuratively and literally, so pack liquids and sunscreen. Another aspect of the Whispering Pines track is that in between the races you have the option of looking around at the beautiful BC scenery which surrounds the track.

ROUND 3

Calgary, AB Wild Rose Motocross Park June 14/15, 2014 The Wild Rose Motocross Association, that runs the track, are fortunate to have a track that is unique in the motocross world. The track is located minutes from downtown Calgary, a city of a million people! The location is so rare for newcomers to the track because it feels odd driving into a motocross oasis in the middle of a city. The course features three full sized motocross tracks and two mini cycle tracks with intermediate to hard dirt. The Wild Rose Motocross Association has done a great job with the track design as it has become a favourite amongst riders. Large floating jumps, huge elevation changes and one of the most unique riding locations in the world make this event special. With an elevated vantage point for all spectators, there isn’t a bad seat in the house as 90% of the national track can be seen from the stands. This track is also a favourite with the riders as its big jumps allow for a large amount of air time. When the Calgary National is complete it used to signal the completion of a third of the series, which is when many riders begin to feel the grind, expectation, and pressure of the series points chase, but now they have to tough it out for an additional round.

ROUND 4

Regina, SK Moto Valley Raceway June 21/22, 2014 Moto Valley Raceway is a favourite among riders because of its elevation changes and breathtaking jumps. Located just to the northeast of Regina, this track was part of the series a number of years ago, and with its return you can bet that the racing will once again be exciting. The track is not only fun for riders but it is also terrific for spectating as there are a number of great vantage points. The soil is prime, dark topsoil that holds moisture and presents a challenge to riders once ruts form in the fast straightaways. The corners form lots of long ruts, which again is tricky with the high speeds. Riders need to keep their head up to look down the track to pick good lines so they don't get passed. For teams, making the right tire selection to match the surface can be a challenge. From soft to tacky to hard pack, it depends on the weather and time of day. Regina is the last round before the series travels east. All riders want to head into the break with a lot of momentum and good results before they run into the rough and sandy tracks of the east.

DEFEND WORDS BY DANNY BRAULT  •  PHOTOS BY JAMES LISSIMORE

They say that sometimes it’s tougher to defend a championship than it is to win one. In Austin Politelli’s case, he comes into 2014 feeling more prepared than last season simply because he knows exactly what to expect. With a tough summer of racing ahead of him, Danny Brault finds out how Austin is feeling on the eve of the 2014 MX2 title chase.

Menifee, California’s Austin Politelli returns to Canada looking to repeat his title success from last season. Over the last decade, Canada has attracted many fast and interesting racers from the US looking to make a name for themselves, earn a good income and gain pro racing experience. Brad Hagseth, Sean Hamblin, Donnie McGourty, Michael Willard, Jimmy Nelson and more have cut their teeth in Canada. Austin Politelli joins that list having first raced in Canada in 2011 for Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki and then returned last year to win his first MX2 professional championship.

Politelli was the guy to beat last year winning 10 of 18 motos and five overalls. The only rider that could have stopped him was KTM Canada Royal Distributing Fox Racing’s Kaven Benoit, but he was sidelined with an ankle injury midway through the series. The 19 year-old Politelli would like to be more confident going into the 2014 series but after breaking his femur in January, he hasn’t been able to ride and train at the level he normally does. Of course, these kids heal quickly and once they hit the track, it’s game on. Let’s learn a little more about our defending MX2 Canadian Champion.

“THIS WILL BE MY THIRD TIME TO CANADA; I CAME IN 2011 AND THEN AGAIN LAST YEAR, AND EVERY YEAR IT GETS BETTER. THERE SEEMS TO BE MORE FANS COMING OUT AND FASTER RIDERS TO COMPETE AGAINST. I ENJOY THE LAID BACK FEEL AS WELL; IT’S A FUN TIME GOING TO CANADA.”

Q&A Hi Austin. Considering your results last summer, I’m sure you’re expecting to be challenging for wins once again in 2014. I want to win but it doesn’t bother me if I don’t win at the first round in Nanaimo. I broke my femur in January while practicing at Milestone and I haven’t been on the bike as much as I would like, but I’m feeling really good right now. We spent some good time testing suspension and dialing in the bike, so my Leading Edge Kawasaki is working awesome. I’m excited to be going back. What’s your take on racing in Canada? This will be my third time to Canada; I came in 2011 and then again last year, and every year it gets better. There seems to be more fans coming out and faster riders to compete against. I enjoy the laid back feel as well; it’s a fun time going to Canada.

There is always a lot of online bench racing happening before the Nationals. Do you stay up on the latest news and gossip of the moto world? Not really. I keep up with the news a little bit, like I see MotoConcepts with Alessi and Friese are going up, but for the most part, I do my own thing and don’t get caught up in it. Do you have certain tracks you enjoy more than others on the Canadian circuit? Kamloops was great last year. It’s cool because it’s the hometown of our team, Leading Edge, but last year the track got really rough and rutty. I like rougher tracks because I am a bigger guy and really throw around the 250F. Gopher Dunes is a nice track even though I sucked there last year. I hope to do better at Deschambault; I was 6th there last year and I’m excited to ride Ulverton because it’s one I’ve never been to. How did the decision come about to go racing in Canada? I first came to Canada in 2011 while I was still an amateur in the States. I thought it would be good experience racing 30 minute motos before turning Pro down here. I got talking with Pat O’Connor from Leading Edge and one thing led to another then I got a ride with them. They’ve been a great group of guys to ride for and I look forward to going back.

What’s your vision for yourself in motocross? Where do you want to go in this sport? I really like supercross. I want to win and do the best that I can. I don’t want to look back and think that I didn’t try hard enough. Your favourite Canadian city? Calgary is cool; I like big cities and there you are riding right in the middle of one. It makes for great photos. Going to Nanaimo on the ferry is fun and Kamloops is beautiful as well. What keeps you busy when you’re not training or riding motocross? I like snowboarding but you have to be careful because you don’t want to get hurt for racing. I ride BMX too, but other than that, I spend time with friends and relax on the lake. You’re back again in the MX2 class, but what if Leading Edge had suggested a 450 ride? I would like to race a 450, for sure. I’m more comfortable on the 450 and would have raced one this year, but it will be nice getting to run the #1 plate and defending my title. This year will be tougher for me. Kaven Benoit kept me on my toes last year until he got hurt and there are some new guys coming up. It makes things a bit harder that I was hurt and not racing, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

BY CHRIS POMEROY AND KYLE BEATON PHOTOS BY JAMES LISSIMORE e enter the 2014 MX1 Championship with mixed emotions. On one hand we have our 2013 Champion, Brett Metcalfe, not returning to the series as he‘s pursuing the AMA outdoor championships, but on the other hand we have a host of new riders and long serving riders all set to go for gold in the MX1 class. Returning to the series after a disappointing 2013 year is Leading Edge Kawasaki rider Teddy Maier. Last summer Maier was very fast, sometimes he was even faster than his teammate Metcalfe, but bad luck seemed to follow him around, which really hurt his chances at finishing on the podium. If he can shake

W

off the dark cloud that surrounded him in 2013, his familiarity with the Canadian series, as well as his endless amount of talent, definitely makes him a title contender this season. Another rider looking to capitalize on Metcalfe’s departure is 2013 MX1 Championship runner-up, Bobby Kiniry. For the first time in a few years, Kiniry took the winter off to repair an injured knee, and will no doubt start off the 2014 series fresher and hungrier than ever. Kiniry also knows the tracks and scenery in Canada very well so look for him to be up front once again. While it is almost a certainty that Kiniry and Maier will be up front, there are a few

question marks heading into the series. The biggest question is whether or not the new GDR Honda Canada rider, Colton Facciotti, can stay healthy for ten rounds. With the level of competition in this class in 2014, all the riders will be forced to ride on the edge so staying healthy will be tough for everyone. Colton has a history of starting the series with wins only to crash himself out of the championship title hunt. Hopefully 2014 will be different; with Colton on a new bike and a new team, he will no doubt be as focused and motivated as he’s ever been. Two new riders who will also be very fast and come into the series with strong creden-

Both riders bring a lot of experience and confidence to Canada, and will likely be title contenders all summer. The list of riders in the MX1 class is very impressive. With no clear cut leader, we think you’re going to see some of the closest racing ever during the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals. 1 MIKE ALESSI Suzuki

Without a doubt, I truly believe that Mike Alessi will be the most dominant rider that the Canadian series has witnessed since the JSR era. Mike’s raw speed and starting ability will boost him to the front of the fi eld every time the gate drops. Even though he has never ridden the Canadian tracks before, the Alessi camp will have done their homework to give Mike that extra edge he needs to win his very first professional championship.

2 C O LT O N F A C C I O T T I Honda

I really think Colton has the full package this year. He’s on a bike that he’s had success on in the past (TLD Honda), plus he’s surrounded himself with people that he’s very comfortable with. The GDR Honda Team really has their program together this year. As long as Colton can get through the first few rounds healthy, he’s my pick for the championship. With the stiff competition this summer it’s not going to be easy for him, but at 26 years-old I think he’s matured enough that he won’t feel the need to win every moto by 25 seconds.

3 TE D DY M A I E R Kawasaki

Some people may think I’m crazy but I truly feel that Teddy Maier can be a podium guy week in and week out. Last year, he challenged Brett Metcalfe on more than one occasion but he always seemed to have some issues. I feel that he’s more focused this year and feels inside that it’s now or never. Teddy is not young guy anymore so his time is running out. He also has a ton of experience on our tracks up here so he really has no excuse to make it happen in 2014. Look for Teddy to take a page out of Metcalfe’s 2013 book and be ultra-consistent all summer long. That will be his key to finishing on the podium.

MX1 4 BOBBY KINIRY Yamaha

I’m really interested to see how Bobby does this season. Normally he’s the guy that is full tilt with racing once the Canadian Nationals end, with overseas races and Supercross. This year is something new for him because he’s had his knee fi xed properly and hasn’t raced since winning the last moto of 2013 in Walton. Personally, I think Bobby is going to come in recharged and very hungry. I feel like he may not be as strong in the sand as he would like but as long as his bad motos are only a fi fth or sixth, he will be right in the championship hunt through to the end of the series.

5 T YLER MEDAGLI A KTM

It was very hard for me to put Tyler Medaglia in fourth because I know he is extremely underrated when it comes to the names that I put ahead of him. Tyler was super solid last year and proved that he’s a podium guy. I think he is even more prepared in 2014 and has a chip on his shoulder to make the point that he is the real deal. His whole deal didn’t even come through until the last minute, but that won’t aff ect him because he’s the type of rider that just loves racing and can ride the bike without much testing time. I’m pulling for the guy. He has a family to feed and is someone that kids should look up to with his never-say-die attitude and hard work ethic. I think you can tell that I’m a huge Tyler Medaglia fan and I have been for a long time.

With so much talent stacked into the MX2 class this summer, this class will no doubt be the one to watch. With some fast young riders and a few crafty veterans, there will be no shortage of excitement in 2014. To get his expert predictions, once again we asked Kyle Beaton to help us out and provide his top ďŹ ve picks.

BY CHRIS POMEROY AND KYLE BEATON PHOTOS BY JAMES LISSIMORE eading into last summer’s National series, much of the hype was surrounding the bigger 450 bikes and the MX1 class. This year, the smaller displacement machines, the 250s (four-stroke and two-stroke) could provide some of the most exciting racing in the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals. The talented riders who will set their sights on a MX2 Championship in 2014 are young, aggressive and very fast. These attributes will be sure to provide fans with some of the best racing ever seen on Canadian soil. The favourite to win the MX2 Championship in 2014 has to be the defending champion, Austin Politelli, as he is back with the same desire and the same team. However, repeating as champion again this summer may be very difficult for Politelli as he’s not only coming back from a very serious injury he suffered in January, but there is also a host of hungry riders who want his big number one plate. The names of the riders who will be chasing the championship this summer are a very interesting mixture. Will it be a veteran rider like Topher Ingalls who finally realizes his dream of becoming the MX2 Champion, or will it be rookie sensation Dylan Wright who surprises everyone and finds his way to the front of the pack? We also can’t forget a rider like Shawn Maffenbeier who won the final round of the 2013 MX2 Series in Walton. If he can stay healthy then he must also be considered a title favourite. We think the same can be said for KTM rider Kaven Benoit, who won races in the west last year before getting injured and missing the remaining five rounds. With ten rounds of racing ahead of them, being consistent and staying healthy is a must. Even though the fastest rider may win a round or two, the smartest rider almost always wins the championship. To get an inside look at the series and his predictions for the MX2 Championship chase, once again we asked former Pro, Kyle Beaton, for his expert analysis. Here are Beaton’s 2014 MX2 Championship predictions.

1 AUSTIN POLITELLI Kawasaki

We all know Austin won this championship last year so he has to be the favourite to repeat, but he’s also coming off a big injury, so obviously his preparation won‘t be as good as it was in 2013. In 2014, he’s once again on a really, really good bike and is backed by an incredible group of people in the Leading Edge Kawasaki Team. I think he knows what to expect this year and he will be ready. While he may take a round or two to get going, I think he’ll get the job done again. He is my pick for the 2014 MX2 Championship.

TOPHER INGALLS 2 Honda

Topher is a great kid who works extremely hard and knows the tracks up here. I think the RTR Honda Team will be better prepared this year with bikes and equipment that will allow Topher to reach his full potential. In 2013, he was very fast but he also suff ered a lot of mechanical failures. Even with those DNFs he was still in the championship hunt during the final few rounds of the 2013 series. I think this summer he will be battling for wins every weekend, but I still think he’ll come up just short of winning the championship.

Some people might not agree with this but after the latest news of him and the Moto Concepts team parting ways, I think Jeremy will feel too rushed and his bikes won’t be set up properly for the first few rounds. While I think he will eventually win some motos, for sure, he may be so far behind in the point race that it will be too late to make a run at the championship. In the MX2 class, having a great bike is so important, and as I’m writing this Jeremy doesn’t even have a ride for the series. As I said, even if he gets one it will be very last minute and too late to get his bike spot on. Even though Jeremy is one of the most talented riders in Canada, this hurtle may be too much to overcome.

I think Shawn is going to have a good year, but he’s going to have to stay healthy, especially at the first few rounds. His confidence coming into the series is going to be good after winning the final round in Walton in 2013. I think he just needs to settle down and minimize the mistakes he’s made in the past. I think he’ll be battling for podium spots and maybe some moto wins, but I don’t think he has what it takes, yet, to win the championship. I hope Shawn makes me eat my words as I really do like him as a rider and as a person. He’s also Canadian and we need as many up front as possible. If Shawn wins the 2014 MX2 Championship then it will be one of the most popular wins in the history of Canadian motocross.

I should have probably put Kaven up further but I think he’s going out on a limb by riding two diff erent bikes throughout the series (Kaven will alternate between a two-stroke and a four-stroke). I think he will be battling for podiums and race wins but I don’t see him putting a whole series together. Every year that he’s ridden for the factory KTM Team he’s had some sort of issue and hasn’t been able to get all his ducks in a row. Maybe it’s a case of feeling too much pressure to perform, I’m not sure, but this year with just two riders under the KTM tent, the pressure will be immense. I like Kaven and I hope he does well, but I just don’t see him winning the 2014 MX2 Championship.

Western Canadian 2014 CMRC

Women s Nationals ~ PREVIEW ~

BY DENAYE GIROUX Women’s Motocross in Canada has been on the rise the past couple years, and we can expect nothing but bigger and better things for the 2014 season. Last summer the racing was incredible and fans were entertained with battles in every race. We’re back this year with a three round series that will take our talented women from Nanaimo to Calgary. Along the way the riders will encounter every type of terrain from sand to deep ruts to steep hills. Can Hailey Larson repeat as champion again or will someone else step up and take the number one plate? Here’s a quick interview with Hailey and a look at the top five riders from the 2013 CMRC Western Canadian Women’s Nationals. Be sure to cheer on your favourite rider or say hello in the pits!

Age: 23 Hometown: Mill Valley, California Bike: 2014 YZ250F Years Riding: 12 Favourite Food: Eggs What have you been doing to get ready for this upcoming series? I wasn’t sure how things were going to work out for this summer, so I spent a lot of time working to save up money in case I needed to pay for everything. While I was doing that I did a lot of mountain biking. Marin Bikes gave me a bike last summer so I’ve been tearing up the trails on that, and it is way cheaper than moto so I could save more. I ended up getting a deal with Devil’s Lake Yamaha, so as soon as that was official, I started racing on the weekends and riding more during the week. What are your goals this summer in Canada and in the USA? I always try to win, but the past couple years I’ve been riding my best because I don’t really care anymore if I win or not. It is going to be harder to not care this summer with support from Devi’s Lake. I’m going to try my best to win without putting pressure on myself.
