Attention all Moto Fans! This year will mark the beginning of a new era for Pro motocross racing in Canada. We have secured a new title sponsor for the series, a long time industry sponsor is stepping it up, an additional round has been added to the series, there’s a new venue in the west, live music and freestyle motocross has been added to the national day’s slate at selected events, our social media is going through the roof, we have a new home for our TV broadcast, and the lineup of racers in each class continues to get better every year.

W

e’ll be partying like a rockstar in 2014 as Rockstar Energy Drink has taken on the role of title sponsor of our series. Rockstar has been a longtime supporter of motocross racing, and recognized the growth and attention the Canadian MX Nationals have recently experienced. Action sports and music are two main elements of which Rockstar Energy Drink has supported, so the Nationals are a natural fit. But wait! There’s no music. Not anymore! Four rounds of the series, two in the west (Nanaimo/ Regina) and two in the east (Gopher Dunes/ Moncton), will host live music with popular new rock groups, such as Tokyo Police Club, Yukon Blonde, Hollerado and USS, following the action packed day of Pro motocross racing. When you add freestyle motocross to the mix you get a festival atmosphere, or what we now call “MotoFest”. Music and FMX aside, there’s a list of Pro riders in both the MX1 and MX2 classes that is a who’s who of world class motocross racing, and when you put them all on the line at one, it makes for a day full of entertainment from the drop of every gate. Motovan Corporation, a major Canadian aftermarket distributor, has supported the series for over a decade and is also excited about the direction the series is taking. So much so, they have stepped up their role to become the presenting sponsor along with their participating OEMs. A former national venue will be hosting a tenth round of the Rockstar Energy Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan; Ulverton, Quebec has held national motocross races since the ‘70s, and their

rolling hills south of Drummondville will be a great addition to the series. Also returning to the schedule is Moto Valley Raceway in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Moto Valley track is a favourite to the riders, is located just on the outskirts of the growing metropolis of Regina, and has hosted some of the best racing in the history of the sport. We expect that trend to continue. If you haven’t done so yet, join our social media following for the latest news, contests and promotions surrounding the Pro Motocross scene. You can find us on Facebook (/CMRCMX), Twitter (/ CMRCRacing), YouTube (/CMRCRacing), Instagram (CMRCMX), Pinterest (/CMRCMX) as well as Google + and Vine. If you miss the racing live you, tune in to CHCH TV, found on basic cable, at 1:00pm in each region of the country, or CHEK in BC. We’re changing the format of our show to half hour episodes, which will make for the most intense half hour of racing you’ve watched. And if you miss that, the streaming video versions will be available on www.mxnationals.ca, www. cmrcracing.com, and www.mxpmag.com following each national broadcast. If you want to witness the best motocross racing in the country, watch insane aerial maneuvers on a motorcycle you never thought possible, or catch the latest hot act in music, the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan is your one stop shop to take it all in at once.

Best fuel economy of Any pickup ever. That’s right, ever. The All-New 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has gotten into the habit of making history. Earlier this year, it won Motor Trend’s 2014 Truck of the Year Award® – the second year in a row and the first time any truck has ever won it back-to-back. Then Canada’s only Light Duty Diesel pickup was rated as good as 7.1 L/100 km or 40 miles per gallon highway* – the best fuel economy ever recorded for a pickup truck. The super-efficient 3.0 litre EcoDiesel V6 engine is also powerful with unsurpassed 420 lb-ft of torque† and up to 9,200 lb of towing capability.• So if you want to save on fuel and get the job done every time, look to the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Otherwise, history might just pass you by.

FACES Andy White

Team Manager of KTM’s racing effort. Andy White is a long time student of the sport. From his early Pro racing days through several privateer efforts of his own with Suzuki and Honda, Andy has been around Canadian motocross for his entire career. He is like every other manager in the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals paddock - a passionate Canadian motocross fan.

Pat O'Connor

Pat O’Connor is the workhorse of the very successful Monster Energy / Thor / Kawasaki team. Through the week he is the team coordinator and manager, and on race day a full team mechanic. Days off are few and far between for Pat. When he does have the occasional day off, you can often find him… ou guessed it, at the track

Josh Snider

Only a few short years ago Josh Snider was on the line battling each weekend in the National motocross series. His team, Redemption Racing, has always had a primary purpose on the racing circuit: his motocross ministry starts the day for teams and riders on Sunday mornings before racing. Redemption’s welcoming and supportive approach to all people has made them an important part of the fabric that is Canadian motocross.

Derek Schuster

The youngest of team managers on the series, Derek Schuster and the Honda Canada GDR team have the respect of everyone in the paddock. The team, in a few short years, has worked with a shoe string budget and turned it into a well branded team, capable of challenging for podium finishes each eekend. For 2014, Schuster final y has full factory support and the fastest Canadian rider, Colton Facciotti, as his top gun. We have a feeling that this year is going to be unforgettable for Derek and his team.

Iain Hayden

a t t h e

Even though most of his success has come in the rough and tumble sport of Snocross, the one thing Iain Hayden knows how to do is win championships. Iain brings all of his knowledge as well as a laid back and articulate personality to the track. Iain will be the man calling the shots with the Rockstar Energy Drink OTSFF Yamaha Team in 2014.

RACES Marc Travers

It’s hard to put into words just how much Marc Travers means to the modern day sport of motocross in Canada. Since 1998, Travers has been the man behind and in front of the camera for the series’ television production. Over the years Travers has defini ely seen a lot happen in Canadian motocross and he brings this knowledge to each and every broadcast. After all, he’s practically made the word “Holeshhhhooootttt” part of the English language. .

PAUL KINGSLEY

Every sport needs a person that represents and enforces its rules. Head Referee Paul Kingsley is that individual at the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals. Kingsley’s no nonsense approach to the rulebook is both fair and consistent, and a lot of the times you’ll hear this sport’s athletes singing his praises. All the riders and teams know that the buck stops at him as he’s earned himself a lot of respect.

Kevin Tyler

A former Pro racer himself, Kevin Tyler is now the man in charge of not only managing the MX101 Yamaha Team, but he’s also guiding the young career of teen rookie sensation Dylan Wright. Kevin is a smart, level headed and passionate motocross guy who loves nothing more than being at or near a motocross track. It’s very rare not to see Kevin with a huge smile on his face in the pits.

Brian Koster

While Don Cherry has Ron Mclean as a sidekick, Marc Travers has Brian Koster as his main confidant. Koster has been around this sport for years and brings a knowledge of motocross that is virtually unmatched. Koster not only helps out with the television production but he is also the host of the Online Radio Show that broadcasts live from each round of the series. If you’re not able to make it out to a race, then you can go on the internet and listen to Brian Koster call each and every race.

Chris Pomeroy

“Palms”, as he’s known around the track, has been around motocross for 35 years and has seen the sport from every angle. Palms is another former Pro racer who now runs the editorial department at MXP Magazine and mxpmag.com. If you want to read about Canadian Motocross then MXP is the place to go. Palms loves to talk about the sport to anyone at any time, so if you see him around the paddock, please feel free to ask him a question.

WH AT A R E THE CL AS S E S?

The Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals are split into two classes, MX1 and MX2. The MX1 class competes on the bigger 450cc machines; these are riders are considered the premier riders in Canada. You will see names like Kyle Keast, Colton Facciotti and Bobby Kiniry. The MX1 class motos are 30 minutes plus 2 laps long. The MX2 class competes on the smaller 250F machines. These riders are generally younger and less experienced than the MX1 riders, although there are exceptions. The MX2 motos are a little shorter at only 25 minutes plus 2 laps, but given the lesser experience of these riders, the racing is quite intense and a little more unpredictable.

WH AT BR AND OF B I KE S DO THE S E R I DE R S R ACE?

There are four main brands of motocross bikes — Kawasaki, Yamaha, KTM and Suzuki. Even though a sponsor may dictate what colour a rider’s bike is, the general rule is that Kawasaki’s are green, Yamaha’s are blue, KTM’s are orange and Suzuki’s are yellow. Although there might be a few subtle differences between the bikes, they are all great. They all use a five-speed transmission, the clutch is always located on the left side of the bars, the front brake is on the right side of the bars, the rear brake is by your right foot and the gear shifter is by your left foot. They all use a kick starter with the exception of the KTM 450, which is electric start.

WHY ARE SOME NUMBER PLATES DIFFERENT COLOURS? This determines what class you’re riding. The MX1 class uses black numbers on white plates and the MX2 class uses white numbers on black plates. Occasionally you will see bikes that have black numbers on yellow backgrounds in the MX2 class. These riders normally compete in the amateur intermediate class but are allowed to attempt to qualify for the MX2 class. The Ladies class uses white numbers on blue backgrounds. All these colours make it very easy for the lap scorers and the fans to read.

26  C M R C 2 0 1 4 M O T O C R O S S P E R F O R M A N C E

HOW R I DE R S GET THE I R NUMBE R S?

When you see a rider with a number from 1-10 on the track, these riders were fortunate enough to finish in the top ten while competing in the MX1 class the previous year. The numbers 11-99 are determined by combining all MX2 points from the previous year with MX1 points outside of the top ten. Numbers 100 and higher are those that are requested by the individual rider and usually worn by riders that are new to the series.

HOW DO THE R I DE R S CHO O S E THE I R S TA R T I NG GATE?

For each round of the series the gate pick for the opening moto is given by the order in which the rider qualified the morning of the race. Each rider has a transponder attached to their bike, so the morning of the race a timed qualifying session is held and the rider with the fastest lap time from that session gets the first pick on the gate. For the second moto of the day, gate pick is determined by how the rider finishes in the first moto. This is a very fair way doing things and it ensures that all the riders and officials are happy.

WHAT DOE S I T ME AN WHE N A R I DE R GET S THE HOLE S HOT ?

The holeshot goes to the first rider out of the first turn after the start. This brave, crafty rider gets the prestigious job of leading the pack around the track for as long as he can hold the position, and receives the Royal Distributing Holeshot Award.

WHAT DOES THE BIG 30-SECOND BOARD ON THE STARTING LINE MEAN? This is how a motocross race begins. After the riders are given a parade lap to check out the track, they line back up at the gate. The starting line official pans the line to see if the riders and their machines are ready to go, this is a rider’s last chance to delay the start. Once all the riders are ready, the official hands it over to the 30-second girl, who holds up the 30-second board for 25 seconds. After 25 seconds she holds the board above her head for 5 seconds, after 5 seconds she turns the board sideways. At this point gate will fall within the next 5 seconds. This may sound complicated but for these experienced riders it is all pretty simple.

WHAT DO A LL THE FL AG S ME A N?

The officials use a series of flags to indicate to the riders the different situations that might arise during a race. The green flag, given at the end of the first lap, means that the race is a go. However, if the red flag is given, this means there has been an accident that needs the attention of all the officials and the race needs to be stopped. If the red flag is given past the half-way point of a moto, the race will be over and the riders will be scored as they were when the red flag was given. The yellow flag is a caution flag, which lets the rider know that there is a rider down ahead, a red cross flag means that not only is a rider down but that the rider needs medical attention. When a rider sees a red cross flag they know that there is medical staff n the track and they have to use extreme caution. The white flag is given at the finish line indicating that the race has one lap remaining. The checkered flag means the race is over and with the long, tiring motos that these riders have to endure, this is a welcome sight.

SEASON ~ CHANGES ~ There’s not dust on us! Every year, the CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals makes changes for the better and this year is no different. The most noteworthy change to the series is the new title sponsor, Rockstar Energy Drink. Rockstar has a long history with motocross racing and has partnered with CMRC for what looks to be a long, mutually beneficial relationship. Rockstar Energy Drink targets the younger adult demographic, which explains their deep involvement with action sports and music. With the successful Canadian Motocross National Series and the addition of live music to selected events, the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals fits the bill to a “T”. To increase the entertainment value and attract a new group to motocross racing, the festival concept has been integrated into the series. Following the Pro motocross racing at the Nanaimo and Regina rounds, live music will be rockin’ the house down with bands such as Tokyo Police Club, Yukon Blonde, Hollerado and We Hunt Buffalo. Add to that the Rockstar Milot Land Freestyle MX Tour in Nanaimo and Kamloops, the “Rockstar Energy Drink Motofest” promises to be an event you can’t miss. With the increased interest and popularity of the series, it was time to add a tenth round. Ulverton, 15 minutes south of Drummondville, Quebec, has played host to motocross nationals since the ‘70s, and guaranteed it will be a great addition. It is a track adored by riders and especially the rambunctious French Canadian crowd. Now, Moto Valley Raceway in Regina, Saskatchewan will host the fourth round of the Western Canadian swing. The tour’s last visit to the prairies was back in 2008. Considering the growing interest of the sport

in the province, Moto Valley Raceway may just become a regular stop. With a new title sponsor comes a new look. An increase in professionalism in regards to the branding and appeal was at the top of the ‘To Do’ list, therefore, you’ll notice a few changes. A new 120’ x 8’ banner will be found behind the starting line, plus a new, branded truss system has been added to the stage. The finish line now has a new look with Rockstar Energy Drink cans placed on the vertical trusses, and in the pits, CMRC’s new 44’ administration trailer is a welcomed addition. New broadcast partners have been arranged for the television coverage of the series and a new format of the shows will be introduced. The CHCH national network and CHEK in British Columbia will air the MX2 class on Saturdays and the MX1 class on Sundays at 1:00pm and 2:30pm respectively starting Saturday, July 5th. These stations can be found on basic cable so more viewers will have the chance to catch the best motocross racing coverage in the world! To keep up to datge with news, results, photos and videos that encompasses the series, there is now a new website to visit – www.mxnationals.ca. Plus, if you can’t miss the race and are Jonesin’ for live coverage, we are re-introducing the live audio broadcast hosted by the best announcer in the business, Brian Koster. Visit www.mxnationals.ca or www.mxpmag.com to tune in to the audio coverage and to watch live lap times. We hope you appreciate and enjoy the changes and additions we’ve made because we want you to have the best experience when attending our motocross racing events. GOPHER DUNES Gopher Dunes represents the most demanding and grueling stop on the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals. When you arrive, it’s unnaturally smooth and tame; inviting even. However, the track is much like a wolf in sheep’s clothing as by the end of practice the glassy sand turns into large rolling whoops that grow until the final lap of the day, leaving riders feeling exhausted both physically and mentally. The round at Gopher Dunes falls in the heat of summer in Ontario, and the temperature and humidity are usually peaked. Mixed with a brutally rough track, riders are tested to their limit. It’s breathtaking to watch riders continue to charge in the final laps. For the pure enthusiast who understands the demands of motocross, you cannot help but give a nod of respect to each rider on the track.

SAND DEL LEE For the second year in a row the Sand Del Lee round follows the tough Gopher Dunes race. The facility, located just outside our nation’s capital, is always immaculate and well prepared by the MX101 team. Unlike what the riders faced the week before at Gopher Dunes, this sandy track becomes choppier as there is clay mixed underneath the loamy sand. The track has a few unique timing sections like “Hell’s Kitchen,” a set of tricky jumps, and some tight switch-backs that give riders passing options in the late stages of the motos. Sand Del Lee has a faithful crowd of loyal fans whose delight is nothing more than hometown racers running up at the front of the pack.

D E S C H A M B A U LT Round seven of the series travels to Quebec at the well liked Deschambault circuit. The track is full of large rolling hills, deep sand and of course the passionate Quebec motocross fans. As the legend JSR can attest to, hometown heroes are a-plenty in Quebec. For many years, thousands of motocross fans would do whatever they had to do to be at the Quebec round to personally cheer on Jean Sebastian Roy. These days they will be cheering for the likes of Kaven Benoit and Tim Tremblay as these riders race in front of their hometown Quebecois fans. Located 30 minutes west of Quebec City, the Deschambault facility hopes to build on the success of 2013 with a few track improvements and some property updates to help accommodate the mass of spectators that plan to attend.

NAL TR ACKS N A T~ IBO EST IN THE EAST ~

MONCTON Moncton is the feel good stop of the series. The welcome riders and teams get at this east coast stop is what makes this event so special. Riverglade MX Park is a track full of history as it has hosted Canadian Motocross Nationals longer than any other track in the country, and to this day remains relatively unchanged in many parts. The track weaves around the property and is usually lined with shirt-waving fans. There are a few unique sections that send riders down the side of the Trans-Canada Highway at top speed. Moncton is a fan-friendly event with a great midway, big jumps and a fantastic atmosphere. It is a must attend event for any race fan.

U LV E R T O N It has been over ten years since the national series has visited the Ulverton track so fans are certainly in for a treat. This sandy track is located 20 minutes south of Drummondville, QC and sits on the side of a hill overlooking the Saint-Francois River. Like Riverglade, this track has been around for a long time and has hosted famous Quebec riders like Carl Vaillancourt and Marco Dubé. The riders are going to love this track as they are taken on a rollercoaster-like ride up and down the sandy Ulverton hills. With its potential to get very rough, this track will test the riders’ resolve, and since this is the next to final round of the series, all of the riders will be giving it their all.

WA LT O N The 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals wraps up where CMRC started its National motocross events - Walton, Ontario. “Motocross Town” welcomes amateurs from across Canada for a week of competition then caps it off ith the final round of the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals. Walton has a long history of motocross events, both small club events and national races. As the final round, this one certainly boasts the largest dealer presence, local support, food selection, and even a Friday night concert. With many local community groups taking part in this event, in addition to the racers and their families, Walton has a feel of home like no other round on the National schedule. The track can vary, depending largely on the weather, but one thing riders can count on is a large crowd, corners with deep ruts, and a collective sigh when the chequered flag is tossed for the final moto of the weekend.

AT THE MID-WAY POINT WITH COLTON FACCIOTTI BY DANNY BRAULT  •  PHOTOS BY JAMES LISSIMORE

As we enter the eastern side of the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals, we have for the first time in two years a healthy Colton Facciotti still with us—and he’s leading the MX1 Championship. For the past two years, Faciotti, the three-time champ, injured himself at Round 2 in Kamloops, which caused him to miss a lot of racing. Fortunately, he’s fit as a fiddle in 2014, and Colt and his GDR Troy Lee Designs Honda team really couldn’t ask for more at this point in the season.

Q&A “IT’S DEFINITELY GOOD FOR THE SERIES TO HAVE THOSE GUYS UP HERE. IT REALLY IS ANYONE’S GAME STILL, EVEN THOUGH THE POINTS HAVE SPREAD OUT A LITTLE.”

Colton hasn’t necessarily been the fastest guy in the MX1 class (Mike Alessi probably takes that title) but he’s right there, and his consistency is unmatched. In four rounds, Facciotti has ridden his CRF450R to a podium finish in every single moto, three of which are wins. Entering Gopher Dunes, the GDR Honda rider leads Alessi by 9 points in the championship (159 to 150) and hasn’t really shown any signs of weakness. Last weekend’s mudfest in Regina marks the fourth and final round of the western swing before things resume on July 12th at Gopher Dunes. Let’s see what’s going on with the three-time Canadian Champ, Colton Facciotti, following a muddy weekend in Regina, Saskatchewan…

Hi Colton, Regina looked like a mess. Is that the worst mud you’ve ever experienced? Yeah, probably very comparable to Morden 2007. It didn’t look too bad but … like in the 250Fs it didn’t look too bad and then a downpour started when we went to the line. That ruined the track from there; the first few laps weren’t too bad until the bikes got too heavy and it was pretty much survival from there. On every uphill and downhill the bike went where it wanted. You were just pinning it and hoping for the best [laughs]. It probably helps being a taller rider in those conditions; you can get your leg out to steady yourself. I had a couple of kickstand moments [laughs]. It helps being taller, but the two guys who got first and second were short guys. I guess it doesn’t matter too much about your size, it’s how you ride. Considering how ugly the track conditions were in Regina, you must be happy to leave there with a third place and continue leading the series points? I knew whoever stayed up and was consistent every lap would win. I was doing that for the first half and then went down. It seems like when you go

down in the mud, halfway through the moto, you lose your concentration and then ride tight after that. I was trying to stay up when I should have probably kept riding hard. Did your grips and hands get all caked with mud? That’s the worst and then you can’t turn the throttle or work the levers. Yeah, I went down on my throttle side so it was hard to twist the throttle. Plus my right wrist is weak from my injury last year so I was just happy to finish. The opening round in Nanaimo went well for you but I’m sure leaving Kamloops with a win felt even better after getting injured there the last two years? Yeah, I knew coming into Kamloops that I had to get through the day. To leave there with two moto wins was awesome. I just need to keep being consistent and keep it on two wheels.

Interview Facciotti.indd 1

2014-07-02 6:01 PM

There’s a lot of talk that this year is the most competitive Canadian Nationals yet in both classes. What’s your opinion? Is it the toughest group you’ve raced against in the MX1 class? I think there are some top-notch guys like Alessi, Chisholm, Teddy, Tyler, Hill and Kiniry, and everyone is on the gas and fighting for the top spot. It’s definitely good for the series to have those guys up here. It really is anyone’s game still, even though the points have spread out a little. A few guys had a bad moto here and there, but there’s still a lot of racing left. Would you say the pace is quicker compared to when Paul Carpenter or Matt Goerke were up here? I don’t know if it’s quicker; it’s similar but there are definitely more guys who are up there in speed.

So you don’t really have a preference over soil conditions? If you asked me that years ago, I would say that I suck in the sand but each year I get better and better. It doesn’t really matter too much what I ride; I’m more of a well-rounded rider now and my fitness is there. I have ridden Ulverton and really liked the track back then, so I’m looking forward to going there again this year. Ulverton is neat because it’s only open for one week the whole year. It’s like the Unadilla of Canada. It opens up on the Tuesday prior to the National for Pro practice, the provincial takes place on Friday and Saturday and then Pros race on Sunday. Then it’s closed down until next year. That’s good because the track is usually better. The dirt isn’t as used up. Sometimes tracks lose dirt in mud races when it gets stuck in bikes then the track deteriorates after time.

I must say, that GDR Honda 450 is the best looking bike on the line. Does it ride as good as it looks? We did our homework and Honda has been really supportive with testing, and they let us do more testing between rounds one and two. The suspension is working awesome, my body is 100 percent and the team has been great. I’m really happy with everything so far.

How are things between you and Mike Alessi? After the first two rounds, it seemed like there was some animosity growing? I think there is a little bit of tension with there being two top guys going for that number one spot, which there always will be, but the last two weekends have been good and hopefully we can have some good, clean racing.

It’s interesting to see the GDR Troy Lee Designs Honda team out front because in reality it’s a young team with a young team manager, Derek Schuster, running it. It must feel good putting it to the more veteran teams on the circuit? It’s a learning experience for Derek and myself also. It’s his first time having a top-level team and each week we’re trying to make things better. The communication is really good and if we need something for the bike, he’s on top of it. Honda has really stepped it up this year with testing, marketing and stuff ike that too.

And pretty soon you’re going to be a dad. When is your wife Jocelyn due? She’s about halfway now; she just had her twenty-week ultra sound. Everything looks good there. The baby is due the first week of November.

Looking at the eastern side of the schedule, four of the six rounds are sand. Do you see that affecting things much? Not really, just need to practice in the sand a bit more. I like the east as much as the west but there will be a few guys who step things up at the sandier tracks.

Ha, that’s awesome. Congratulations and enjoy your break before Gopher Dunes! Thanks.

Wow, marriage, dog, house, and now a kid? Yeah, I’m getting old. You’re not the only one. Tyler Medaglia has two now, Bobby Kiniry’s a dad, Teddy Maier? … Everybody is having a kid, so I’m just following suit.

WORDS BY RYAN LOCKHART  •  PHOTOS BY JAMES LISSIMORE Just as we predicted back in May, the MX1 series has seen some incredible racing throughout the first four rounds of the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals. As we head into the tough eastern rounds, Colton Facciotti holds a small points lead over American import Mike Alessi. These two riders dominated the first three rounds only to have Bobby Kiniry show them the way around at the final western round in Regina. For some expert analysis, we’ve called upon Ryan Lockhart to give us some insight as to which rider is going to shine in the east and take the MX1 Championship. Here is what Lockhart had to say:

O LT O N F A C C I O T T I 1 C Honda I’m going to put all my money on Colton once the chequered flag flies at Walton Raceway for the final round of the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals. Colton has had a very strong western swing and has held the red plate since round one in Nanaimo. I think with the confidence and momentum that Colt has gained in the west, that’s going to make him near unstoppable in the east. He will be close to home and has tons of experience on the tracks in the east, which has him pointed in the direction to become the 2014 Canadian Champion. If Colton does win the title then I believe this will be his sweetest victory as he’s going to have to battle right to the end.

MX1 IKE ALESSI 2 M Suzuki First thing’s first, Mike has been a great addition to our series. He’s brought a ton of US attention to our series, as Brett Metcalfe did in 2013. I really believe that Mike will win more motos than Colton on the eastern swing, but he will have a tough time matching Colton’s consistency week in and week out. Every weekend is a learning curve for Mike and that is tough to overcome when you are trying to win a championship. Colton and Mike have been in a league of their own up to this point and I only expect the same for the rest of the season. Mike is a proud individual so you know that he will fight for this title until the final race in Walton.

YLER MEDAGLI A 3 TKTM When I did my picks for the western swing I really underestimated Tyler. He has really impressed me so far this season and I know for sure he’s rolling with confidence as the series moves east. If it wasn’t for a bit of a slow start at Nanaimo, Tyler would be a lot closer in points to Colt and Mike. Tyler loves the sand, and with four out of the final six rounds being on sandy tracks we will see a lot of the big #3 KTM on the podium. If Tyler can finish the series in third again then I promise to never underestimate this kid again.

MX1 YLE CHISHOLM 4 K Yamaha Kyle has had a bit of an up and down season in Canada so far. Bad starts combined with a few bike issues have kept him out of the top five where he belongs. Now that we’re headed east I think Kyle is going to start getting the results that he, as well as everyone else, expects. Since he was raised in Florida, he definitely excels in the sand and he‘s used to the heat. This is what the east is all about, plus he’s ridden most of the eastern tracks when he was up here a few years ago. I expect to see a #4 on his bike after Walton.

OBBY KINIRY 5 B Yamaha Bobby K has dug himself a pretty big hole to climb out of as we head east. His speed hasn’t been an issue this year but it seems like a black cloud has been following him around. He has had a DNF along with a few other motos that are not up to his expectations. Although he did win the last round in the mud at Regina, this may be just what he needed to turn his season around. If there is anyone out there that can get going when the going gets tough, it’s Bobby. He was born and raised in New York State so he knows how to race in the heat. No doubt Bobby will use the weeks leading up to Gopher Dunes wisely and will be ready to finish off he MX1 series in style.

With so much talent stacked into the MX2 class this summer, this class will no doubt be the one to watch. Now that we’re heading east I believe this is where Kaven will really shine. As long as he can stay healthy and have no bike issues, I think it’s his championship to lose. Another interesting thing about Kaven in the east is that he will be switching to a KTM 250 two-stroke. I think this will help him on the four sandy tracks but will hurt him in Moncton and Walton. This is definitely a gutsy change to make as he enters the east with the MX2 points lead.

After a somewhat slow start in the west, I think Austin will put together a strong east coast swing this year. The pressure is not on him like it was last year at this time as he’s not the points leader, however he’s got some work to do if he wants to finish second. We saw his speed come back in Calgary so I think he’s feeling a lot better on the bike. In Regina he was able to limit the damage in the mud to finish third. I would expect him to be training very hard during the break and come out strong when the series resumes.

J E RE M Y M E DAG L I A 3 Kawasaki

It will be very interesting to see how Medaglia does in the east. He has more time on the bike now and I’m sure they’re getting all the bugs worked out. He’s also proven in the past that he rides the eastern tracks very well so he will be tough to beat. As we head into round fi ve, he’s a little behind in points so he will have his work cut out for him if he wants to make those points up. However, this is the east and anything can happen. Knowing Medaglia, as I do, he will certainly make it interesting.

So far in the 2014 MX2 series, Friese has been the most talked about rider due his antics both on and o° the track. However, you can’t get away from the fact that he is one of the fastest and by far most aggressive rider in this class. We saw some cracks in his armour in Regina when the conditions got tough and I can’t help but think we might see the same in the east. When you ride like he does you’re very hard on equipment. At the eastern rounds when it’s hot and humid, these 250Fs need to be taken care of as they tend to run very hot. I think Friese will still win his share of motos in the east, but I think that mistakes and mishaps will cost him the 2014 MX2 title.

It was very hard to put Shawn in fourth as I think he’s riding amazing this year. I think he will continue to be a frontrunner in the east as he was very successful on these tracks in 2013. It will, however, be interesting to see how Shawn handles the newfound pressure of being near the lead in points heading down the stretch. This is new territory for him so hopefully he can lean on his older, more experienced teammates for advice. If Shawn can stay cool then he’ll battle for this championship in the final six rounds.

he 2014 CMRC Women’s Nationals have featured three rounds in the west and will now include three rounds in the east. Each National will take place on the amateur day prior to or following selected rounds of the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals. Hoping to build off the success of the Western Series, the women in the east are very excited to compete for their respective championship. In 2013, we saw American Jackie Strong dominate the series in the east, winning every moto en route to the title. For 2014, the schedule remains the same with three rounds but with three tough sand tracks that await the talented women to rip apart. Unlike most of the smooth western tracks, the tracks in the east are very rough, and when you factor in the heat and humidity that comes with the summer months in Ontario and Quebec, this championship is going to be very tough to win. Women’s motocross in Canada is getting more and more popular every year. With the increasing numbers of young girls getting into riding, this series gives them great inspiration. These women take racing very seriously on the track, however off he track they’re very relaxed and approachable for fans. They love to talk about racing and they love to encourage girls to give racing a try. So grab a spot along the fence and watch these women battle it out for the 2014 CMRC Eastern Canadian Women’s Nationals.
