Strong ride in Kamloops nets third overall for Kiniry After a rain soaked opening round in Nanaimo, BC, Round 2 of the CMRC Motocross Nationals were greeted by sunny skies at Whispering Pines Raceway in Kamloops, BC on Saturday, June 9th. It was the first time a pro national was run on a Saturday instead of a Sunday, a formula that will also be used at Round 5 at Gopher Dunes later this season, when the series kicks off the eastern rounds in Courtland, ON. Although the west coast was beleaguered with rain most of the week before the event, the weather gods cooperated by turning off their sprinkler system. And officials and staff at Whispering Pines ensured the track was in optimal condition for the races. “We were all concerned that we were going to have another mud race, but fortunately that was not the case,” said Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/Yamaha team owner Andre Laurin. In the first MX1 moto, Bobby Kiniry launched himself into a top-five start aboard his YZ450F rocket, dicing with the frontrunners for position until finally installing himself in third place. He settled into a comfortable groove and defended that position successfully all the way to the checkered flag.

In the second moto, Kiniry lay down a repeat performance off the start, rounding turn one once again in the top five. Two laps into the moto, however, while going for second place, contact was made with another rider, which resulted in Kiniry damaging his front brake line. This resulted in a loss of brake fluid, effectively leaving him without braking power. Despite having no front brake, Kiniry soldiered on and managed to stay in the top five for the rest of the moto. At the finish line he held fourth position, saving the day with a respectable third overall on the strength of 3-4 motos. Kiniry’s results currently see him holding down second place in the points chase after two of nine rounds. “I was happy with my results today considering I was still having problems with my eyes from the mud that got into them in Nanaimo, and with no front brake I really couldn’t battle for a top three finish in the second moto,” Kiniry said. In the MX2 class, Richard Grey, racing his first full nationals season, again held up his end of the bargain by finishing in the top ten club for Team Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/Yamaha. A decent start in the first moto saw Grey ride flawlessly in the number ten slot for most of the race, holding off any challengers for that position right to the finish line. In the second moto, Grey hammered down a top five start but he fell back a number of positions as the race unfolded, eventually finishing in ninth place when the checkered flag was waved. “My goal is to come out of the western rounds somewhere in the top ten points and so far I’m on track for 2
that. We got two more rounds to go before heading east and I’m hoping to improve on what I’ve done so far,” Grey said.
