PRESS RELEASE (Vaughan, ON – June 19, 2012)
Top of the box for Kiniry in Calgary Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha’s Bobby Kiniry came out swinging at a windy Wild Rose MX Park in Calgary this past weekend to claim his first overall win of the season in the premier MX1 class. On the strength of 2-1 motos he ended archrival Matt Goerke’s first two rounds domination. Goerke was able to hold off Kiniry in moto one, but in the second an unleashed Kiniry could not be tamed. Points chase leader Goerke settled for second overall on the day thanks to 1-2 motos. In the first MX1 moto, Kiniry nailed down a top five start, putting his YZ450F solidly in the mix with the frontrunners. While battling for position to move from third into second he was a little overeager to clear the task and washed out his front end. This error would cost him six positions, but it was clear an on-fire Kiniry was going to pull out all the stops and make his way back toward the front. He powered his way from eighth to fifth in a few laps time and continued to mount a charge, picking off three more riders to claim the second place he had been after since the first few laps. With time running out he was unable to challenge Goerke for the lead, however, but the stage was set for moto two. Kiniry had served notice.

As in the first moto, a lightning start saw Kiniry round turn one in the top five. In the second turn he shot into second place to then hound Goerke until he made a definitive pass on him four laps later. But the race was far from over as a determined Goerke stuck with Kiniry and challenged him lap after lap in a bid to reclaim the lead. The two Americans lay down such a blistering pace they were running about five seconds a lap faster than third place. When all was said and done, however, Goerke was unable to get by Kiniry. After receiving more than his fair share of problems, Kiniry finally enjoyed a trouble-free weekend, with the results speaking for themselves. “The second moto really went my way. I knew I could take Matt if I got by him quick enough to take the lead early in the race and it worked out that way. I’d like to give a big shout to the entire team and our sponsors for making this a winning day. Everybody really pulled their weight, Kiniry said. In the volatile MX2 class Richard Grey continued to impress with consistent top 10 finishes. Despite poor starts he managed to pull things together to finish ninth in the first moto and 10th in the second, giving him eighth overall on the day, his best finish yet this season.

“I’m finishing where I need to in the top 10 but I have to improve on my starts so I’m not pouring my energy into battling my way there from mid-pack or worse. I know that I can finish better than ninth or 10th if I can get better starts,” said Grey.
