Crossroad District, Kansas CIty Auditorium / Cultural Center Corten, Concrete & Steel

The proposed site is located at the corner of Central Street and W 19th Street, Kansas City, Missouri. It is surrounded by renovated warehouses and industrial buildings which are now occupied with commercials, offices, and residences. It also has live music venues and open houses art galleries on the first Friday of each month. Thus, it creates a unique characteristic of a vibrant district. The design of this cultural center is the combination of both industrial and vibrant aspects of the district. The building is divided into three parts, public gathering spaces, semi-private spaces, and auditorium. Corten steel is wrapped around the lower portion of the building to express the idea of old and robust industrial look. The auditorium part of the building is slanted down to North. By doing so, the building on the north will have minimal visual interference toward the city and maximum southern daylight. The use of translucent glass on the slanted box is to represent the idea of light vibrant culture co-existing with the industrial portion of the building. There is an open space on the balcony to have open view from the second floor lobby and the cafeteria. On the north side of the building, there are step seatings to provide outdoor activities or first Friday events.
