May 2010

It’s Anniversary Month at Daffodil Come help us celebrate our 72nd anniversary of existence in Eagledom. On Wednesday, May 19 we will have our anniversary dinner and meeting with a special anniversary initiation. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. On the menu is chicken fried steak with all the trimmings. Our special guests will be State Worthy President Marvin Little from Auburn Aerie #2298 and Grand Worthy Trustee Michael Duehr from Dubuque, Iowa. Thursday night, May 20, will be our annual “Old Timer’s Night.” Any Aerie member with 20 years or more of continuous service will receive an invitation to the dinner. If you do not receive an invitation by May 10 and feel you are qualified for one, please call the Aerie Secretary’s office so we can determine if you are eligible. Grand Trustee Michael Duehr and State President Marvin Little will be again in attendance. Grand Worthy President, Mike Lagervall will be there if his schedule permits. Dinner that night will be meat loaf with all of the trimmings served by Daffodil Auxiliary. Happy hour will be at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Be sure and bring your dinner invitation and sign in so we know who will receive their service pins that night. This is always a fun night where we get to see people we may only see once a year. Please RSVP so we can get an idea of how much food to fix. — Leonard Blakely, Aerie Secretary

From Your Aerie President

Thanks for a fantastic year!! Hello Brothers and Sisters. First I would like to wish a happy Mothers’ Day to all of our moms. It’s also time for the Aerie’s Anniversary, and soon there will be new officers installed. That being said, my year as President will soon be coming to an end. Since being installed last June, I’ve learned quite a lot about the members, fundraisers, charities, and what the Eagles are all about. I’m very impressed and awed by all of the good work that is done for the community, as well as the great volunteers that we have here at Daffodil #2308. A GREAT FOOD DRIVE I would also like to take this time to tell you of another very good cause that happens here in Puyallup and the nation every year. Each May, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) with the cooperation of the U.S. Postal Service, conducts their annual food drive. This year the drive will be on Saturday May 8. You’ll probably notice a card and bag in your mail boxes. This has been happening for 18 years and continues to help in local communities. This food drive is the largest single one-day food drive in the nation. The coordinator for the NALC has told me that last year the carriers, clerks, postmaster, and volunteers collected 58,500 pounds of food in Puyallup that was handed out at a record pace to help the less fortunate. This year they are expecting to collect more than one billion total pounds of food nationwide. He also stated, “With statewide unemployment at almost 10 per cent, there is still a great need for those canned or non-perishable items.” All of the donations collected go to the following food banks: All Saints Parish, the Salvation Army, and Graham South Hill Food Bank. I think we all can agree that this is a very worthy cause. So in the Eagle spirit of “People

Helping People,” I’m asking that we all lend our support to this very worthy cause. If anyone would like to volunteer helping with pick up in the downtown Puyallup area, please let me know your names and information so that I can pass on the information to him. He has told me that he will have signs for vehicles to let the public know that you are there to collect their donations. I thank you for your consideration. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT I now want to thank you all, Brothers and Sisters, for the opportunity to serve as your President. Your patience and guidance throughout the year has been invaluable to me. It really shows what kind and caring people you all are. I hope that our Aerie will keep up the good work well into the future. Thank you again! — Jonas White, Worthy President

Madam Prez Sez. . .

Thank you, Sisters! Thanks to everyone who has helped out the Auxiliary this year. Thank you to all who took an office of a chairmanship this year. Also, thank you to the ones who took time from your days to come and find out what your Auxiliary is about. That is why we need Sisters coming to the meetings and helping out. Auxiliary meetings in May are on the 13th and 27th. Please come and join us for fun. Sunday, May 23 will be installation of new officers., Best of luck to Penny and Norm, our 2010-2011 Presidents. — Loni Andrews, Madam President

Auxiliary reaches quota Yea!! Sisters, you did it! We reached quota plus!! That ends my program for this year. The new program will start again on June 1, 2010. I’ll let you know about the new program then. We try to get quota each year. That is necessary because of the ones who leave. Good luck to all of you in the drawings. — Hugs, Kathy T. -2-

On behalf of the Wilson family, I would like to thank everyone who assisted us in hosting our “Ken Wilson Memorial Fund Raising Dance” in February. Our benefit dance was a huge success and the proceeds raised will be used for scholarships benefiting financially underprivileged youths so they may participate in Puyallup Valley Youth Athletic Programs. Would like to specifically thank the Trustees, Loni, the bar and kitchen staff, the waitresses, our band “7th Loft,” as well as a special thanks to Sue Hanson and Rod Mohr. Without the support of the club and everyone’s hard work and dedication to this event, it would not have been the success it was. My dad would be proud of you all!! As a reminder, the Ken Wilson Memorial Golf Tournament will be held this year on Saturday, May 22 at High Cedars Golf Course near Orting. Please contact either Rod Mohr at (253) 8484441 or Kelly Wilson at (253) 848-9593 for additional information.

Check out our new rug and get ready for BBQ A big thanks goes out to all the volunteers for helping on “Phase One” of the carpet removal and installation in the club entry, bar and hallway. It looks wonderful! “Phase Two,” the dining room, is scheduled for the first week in May. If you would like to help out again, contact Loni Andrews. We would also like to thank Ron Fiedler for his part in getting the carpet and helping out.

BARBECUE COOK-OFF Be sure to plan on attending the “Babyback Rib Cook-off” on Sunday, May 16. We still have room for more teams, so get your entry in ASAP. First prize money will be around $400 and all the cooks will get an event apron. Wallace Stoves on 72nd Street and Portland Avenue will be demonstrating cooking and smoking methods on “The Big Green Egg” and “Primo” cookers. We will be raffling off one of these BBQ’s that Wallace Stoves donated, so be sure to buy a ticket for that. The BBQ Rib Dinner tickets are still on sale, but they are going quickly! Be sure to get your tickets before they are all sold out. If you buy you tickets before midnight on Friday, May 14, you will be entered in two $50 raffles held during the dinner. We will also have several other items to raffle off throughout the day, so don’t miss this one! The beer garden opens at 11 a.m. and the live band starts at noon. — Your Aerie Trustees

Thanks, volunteers, you are just great!! To all of the great volunteers, words cannot express enough how grateful I am for all of your help around the Aerie. Thank you all. Here are some dates for you to put on your calendars: • July 17 — Grand Aerie President Mike Lagervall’s Homecoming. • July 24 and 25 — Eagles Picnic at Swiss Park. • August 8 — Car Show here at the club. If you wish to help volunteer around the Aerie, please contact Loni at (253) 845-5021. Thanks.

Officer installation May 23 Brother Norm Kallas and Sister Penny Fiedler will be our new Aerie and Auxiliary leaders for the 20102011 Eagle year. Please join all the new officers on Sunday, May 23 at 2 p.m. for installation with dinner to follow.

THE GREATEST GAME What makes golf the greatest game? Many things. Golf is a pleasing combination of physical exercise and mental concentration. It provides the golfer with time and opportunity to walk over God’s green earth and to enjoy Mother Nature in all her splendor. Golf is also a social game — the perfect place to renew old friendships and make new ones.

The game of golf meets a player’s innate need for completion, both with others and with himself. The more a golfer works at the game, the more he or she improves. With improvement, however gradual, comes a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. What is golf? It is many things, but first and foremost, golf is perhaps the most perfect game yet invented by man. “Golf is 20 per cent mechanics and technique. The other 80 per cent is philosophy, humor, tragedy, romance, melodrama, companionship, camaraderie, cussedness and conversation.” — Milo
