I ’m dreaming
of a green(er) Christmas On the face of it, Christmas could be deemed a very unsustainable festival. Trees cut down and brought indoors, acres of glittery, foiled wrapping paper and tons of unwanted gifts going straight into landfill. Depressingly, 23 million unwanted Christmas gifts (worth between £200m-500m) generate many tens of thousands of tonnes of landfill every year. All this before we even get started on the wasted food and the food packaging we will throw away (we generally buy 30% more food and drink for the Christmas season). We throw out 4,500 tonnes of tin foil and 125,000 tonnes of plastic food packaging during the Christmas season.
So what can we do to try to make their Christmas shopping 2021 much greener and eco friendly? For most people, easy changes can make a considerable difference. Here’s just a few. Shop Local Instead of turning to Amazon, try doing your gift and Christmas shopping locally this year. Canterbury is so lucky to have a wonderful mixture of local, independent retailers as well as its national chains. If you’ve not spent a day wandering the cobbled backstreets of The Cathedral Quarter and The King’s Mile, you’re really missing a great festive shopping experience. Unusual inspirations for the home, toys, beautiful jewellery, shoes, Fairtrade gifts, clothing, scarves and accessories, ceramics – it’s all here. The Christmas windows are beautiful and a great backdrop to give you a Christmassy glow.

Lush - Great smelling Christmas bath bombs, soaps and sustainably made toiletries. Lush has even introduced a returnable plastic packaging service – giving you money off when you bring the plastic outer layers back for them to recycle. Many of their products are package free. Almost 6 million plastic bottles are saved globally from selling their shampoo bars alone. Unboxed - Local entrepreneur Lynda desMarais opened her St Peter’s St store with the aim of reducing the mountain of waste material from the weekly shop. She decided to open Unboxed, a plastic free, refillable and eco-friendly store. Come take a look - reuse your own jars and fill them up with nuts, seeds, grains or dairy free chocolate buttons for Christmas treats! There are always some lovely gift inspirations at Unboxed, such as loose leaf teas, or locally roasted coffee.
The Veg Box Café - Offers food which is locally sourced wherever possible, to support local farmers and to cut down their carbon footprint, along with Fairtrade goods. Their food boxes are compostable. Like most towns and cities in the UK, Canterbury has rough sleepers. In a small city it’s a very visual reminder that when people find themselves without a home, they can end up in shop doorways, public parks or tucked away in a tent. We often hear people ask ‘why are there still people homeless in this day and age?’ and ‘why don’t the council sort this out?’ Rough sleeping is a complex issue. It often involves a long back-story which may include family problems, relationship breakups, job loss, drug and alcohol misuse, mental health problems or trauma. It’s unrealistic to believe that by simply putting a roof over someone’s head, their other problems will go away. Canterbury City Council has helped and rehomed many rough sleepers, but some end up back on the streets in a cycle of complicated and challenging situations. For some, their ‘family’ is the network of other rough sleepers, and they may feel isolated or unhappy when in housing. If a rough sleeper refuses to engage with outreach workers, they cannot be forced to receive help or housing. Some simply wish to be left alone (and it’s not illegal to sleep on the street, so often the police are unable to help).

Fortunately, Canterbury has two amazing charities who do outreach work with rough sleepers and homeless people and try to offer a more long-term approach to help them to solve some of their problems, allowing them to stabilise and improve their lives and eventually find permanent housing and employment. They can sign-post help to addiction services, to financial support, education and jobs or they can simply support them in their immediate need until they are ready to seek help.

At their Day Centre, next to Canterbury East train station, they have dedicated support workers who can help with making a homeless application, registering with a GP, housing referrals and job searches. Their on-site mental health professionals provide support for the wellbeing of clients who visit the centre.
During the Winter, temperatures can drop to around 2°c in Canterbury overnight. Catching Lives work tirelessly alongside other local organisations to provide emergency accommodation, known as the Winter Shelter to the homeless in Canterbury. Over the Winter of 2020-2021, the Winter Shelter was used by a total of 41 rough sleepers.

Adam
When Porchlight first met Adam, he was 18 years old and homeless. Now 26, he’s an assistant manager at a major high street shop and responsible for managing large sums of money, dealing with customers and motivating a small team of staff. “I’m in a job I like and am in charge of a great team – all because an employer saw the same potential in me that Porchlight did.” Adam has been with his employer for six years. He started out as a cashier while still living with Porchlight.

Adam had become homeless due to a family relationship breakdown. He spent over a year being supported by Porchlight and rebuilding his life. Employment allows people to leave homelessness behind for good, but we know that people must recover from the trauma of homelessness before they’re ready to work. Porchlight helped Adam to overcome the trauma he had experienced and rebuild his confidence. An important step in this process is helping people find volunteering opportunities with local organisations. For Adam, this involved helping to run a large jobs fair. “Volunteering really boosted my confidence. At first, I felt out of my comfort zone but by the end it made me realise I was ready to start applying for jobs.” Adam was good at talking to the public – something he’d realised while volunteering. He began applying for publicfacing jobs with help from his support worker. Soon, Adam’s employer offered him a cashier role. He began work and was able to move out of Porchlight accommodation a few months later. Since then, he’s established himself at the company.
“I’m happy where I am. I have made friends with colleagues and customers. At one point in my life, it’s not something I imagined myself being able to do.” If you’ve been homeless it can count against you when going for a job. “My story is proof that no one should be judged because of their situation. If employers are willing to look beyond homelessness, they will find many more people like me who have a lot to give.” So what’s the best thing to do to help? Canterbury City Council would urge people not to give cash directly to rough sleepers, but to donate to either Porchlight or Catching Lives. Both charities work with long-term aims to help their clients to get off the street, rather than a short term fix of one meal or a night in a hostel. As you book your own festivities, please don’t forget what a big difference a few pounds could make for those facing homelessness. This Christmas, we hope that you will consider giving to our local charities who do such great work in the city.

Why do we hang a stocking up over the fireplace, or at the end of the bed? The reasons are a little lost in the mists of time and storytelling. However, it’s believed to originate from the story of Saint Nicholas, who wanted to help a poor family with three daughters. He threw three bags of gold coins through their window, as he knew that their father would not accept charity. One of the bags of coins landed in a stocking, hanging to dry by the fire. Gold coins (chocolate ones sadly) still appear in stockings today.

Christmas dinner the Shepherd Neame way! Many of us spend the weeks in the run up to Christmas Day planning, and shopping for that big special meal for friends and family. It’s a stressful time for the person in the kitchen. Imagine then, how it feels to be responsible for thousands of Christmas meals in December.
Shepherd Neame is Britain’s oldest brewer, founded in 1698. Shepherd Neame is still rooted firmly in East Kent and has a large brewery in Faversham, supplying its Kent pubs, as well as supermarkets with over 60m pints produced each year. Shepherd Neame’s managed food food offer is led by Head Development Chef Simon Howlett, supported by Development Chef Ellina Smith and Retail Development Manager Gareth Finney.
When do you start thinking about Christmas menus? In January (!!) when we review our festive menu to assess what dishes sold well and received positive feedback from both our customers and kitchen teams. Around late February we will start to plan our new menu, which then goes through various reviews including gathering our kitchen teams to try the dishes and offer feedback and ideas. The new festive menu is then shared in our managed pubs and on our websites at the end of the summer as customers begin to think about booking their Christmas events. What inspires you? We want to be best in class for the traditional favourites such as roast turkey and Christmas pudding, while also ensuring we are offering something a little different, as some customers will be attending multiple festive events and will want to enjoy something other than turkey!
What’s new on the menu this Christmas? As the demand for vegan cuisine continues to rise, we have ensured that all our festive menus have vegan and vegetarian choices. We have also added more under-600 calorie dishes and introduced new gluten free menu items, including ‘pigs in blankets’ and Christmas puddings for the first time, to offer as much choice to customers as possible. We’re passionate about serving great, freshly cooked food, using the finest ingredients. As might be expected from a brewery based in the Garden of England, we want to use the seasonal produce available on our doorstep on our menus wherever possible, working with a handpicked network of farmers, fishermen and food producers throughout Kent and the South East to ensure the best, sustainable fresh ingredients are used. They include Master Butchers Joseph and Henry based in Ramsgate, fishmongers Chapmans of Sevenoaks, and Maidstone-based fruit and vegetable wholesaler RJ Kingsland & Son. Our focus on local produce has also resulted in a reduction of food miles, part of our ongoing efforts to ensure our offer is sustainable.
