The Story of the Ladybird Artists 1940 - 1975 Saturday 9 June - Sunday 23 September Special Exhibitions Room, The Beaney Free admission Ladybird books have been a familiar fixture on children’s bookshelves since the 1950s but few people are aware that they actually date back to the early days of the Second World War. For the first time this exhibition puts on display an unparalleled collection of books, original artwork and artefacts and shows how the numerous, talented Ladybird illustrators played such an enormous role in the extraordinary success of the company in the 20th century. Tracing the interconnected work of these artists, the Ladybird story itself is recounted over its ‘golden years’ – 1940 to 1975. Visually rich and varied, it is a story that is sure to evoke many strong memories of childhood! Helen Day has long been fascinated by the story of the company and the lives of the illustrators who helped to make it great. Over 20 years of researching and collecting she has built up a fascinating archive of original artwork, books and other artefacts that help relate the artists’ work to the context of its day. It is this rich and colourful collection that forms the exhibition, capturing many memories of childhood and of a world that is fast disappearing.

This exhibition is co-curated by The Beaney & Helen Day. Image Credit: CF Tunnicliffe

CANTERBURY SATURDAY 7TH JULY 2018

a little history... On 12th July 1174 Plantagenet King Henry II came to Canterbury to perform penance for the death of Archbishop Thomas Becket four years earlier. Becket’s murder shocked the entire medieval world and Henry’s role in that (“who will rid me of this turbulent priest?”) meant that he was held responsible when his knights assassinated Becket in Canterbury Cathedral on 29th December 1170. In 1174 Henry came to Canterbury to perform penance at Becket’s tomb in the Cathedral. He walked barefoot through the city in sackcloth, was scourged by monks and spent that night in prayer at Becket’s tomb.

...and a lot of fun

for children of all ages... even ‘Middle Ages‘!

Medieval Pageant Parade

Commemorating Henry ll’s pilgrimage to Canterbury and astonishing public apology in 1174 this colourful parade features historical characters, local schools and community and re-enactment groups, giants, mounted knights, music and medieval mayhem. Family Trail

Between 11.30am and 5pm numerous venues across the city will offer a host of activities and insight into medieval Canterbury. Follow the trail and discover your talent for medieval archery, jewellery making, sword fighting, arts and crafts and much more. There is a whole medieval world waiting to be explored.
