Discovering Kentish Wine The Perfect Day Out

 Visit MyCanterbury.co.uk for more information

English wine has been getting ever better known and more widespread for a few years now. Last year, a record 15.6m bottles were produced (well over double the production of 2017). Kent’s chalky soil produces excellent grapes across the county, and several vineyards close to Canterbury are worth a visit – an experience that 15 years ago would have required a trip across the channel.

Charles and Ruth Simpson have made awardwinning wines at Domaine Sainte Rose, their estate in southern France, for the last 17 years. In 2014 they brought their expertise back to the UK, establishing Simpsons Wine Estate in Barham, with an aspiration to create the finest quality Traditional Method English sparkling wine. simpsonswine.com

Today, many Kent vineyards offer tours and learning experiences, as well as tasting sessions and a chance to buy their wines and sometimes even a lovely meal. All you need is to nominate a dedicated driver for the day, then head off to one of these special places to discover more. Alternatively, most of them can be reached by public transport. Here are a few suggested local vineyards within reach of Canterbury.

5

Gusbourne Wines

Simpsons Wine Estate, Barham The Simpsons vineyards occupy glorious positions on the sunny, sheltered slopes of the North Downs of Kent, protected from the vagaries of the English climate by ancient woodland and rooted in the chalky soils so highly revered in the world of sparkling wine.

The original Gusbourne Estate in Appledore, near Ashford, dates back to 1410. The de Goosebourne family crest featured three geese and is to be seen in the local parish church. Every bottle of wine crafted at Gusbourne still carries a contemporary goose crest in honour of this heritage. Following the planting of the new vines in 2004, debut vintages of Gusbourne Brut Reserve 2006 and Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs won critical acclaim in 2010. As a result, Gusbourne quickly earned a reputation as a producer of outstanding Kentish sparkling wines, with accolades from some of the industry’s toughest critics. gusbourne.com

Hush Heath Estate The Staplehurst home of award-winning Balfour Brut Rosé is about 40 mins drive from Canterbury through beautiful Kent countryside. There’s a lovely wine shop overlooking the vines. You can even hold your wedding on the estate. Hush Heath produces sparkling wines using the Traditional Method, as well as still wines. Visitors can stroll through the estate’s beautiful vineyards, apple orchards and ancient oak woodlands, before enjoying a detailed talk at the winery. hushheath.com

Barnsole Vineyard, Staple Barnsole vineyard is located in the village of Staple, situated between Canterbury and the pretty Cinque Port of Sandwich. This fertile land has been farmed since ancient times, and the loam over chalk soil regularly offers-up relics such as Napoleonic buttons, musket balls and the odd clay pipe! Barnsole’s situation delivers the perfect geology and climate to produce the high-quality grapes that allow them to produce award-winning English wines.

Chartham Valley Vineyard Chartham is one of East Kent’s newest vineyards, situated at the lovely Burnt House Farm in Chartham, with its iconic dovecote featured in the vineyard logo. It is owned by Dr Roz Waller and her husband Richard Goodenough and the vineyards are managed by their son, Andy. Chartham combines traditional farming values with a modern, eco-friendly approach. Located a stone’s throw from Chartham station, their tasting rooms also host work by local artists. charthamvineyard.co.uk

The Inaugural Canterbury Wine Festival 2019. A Midsummer Weekend June 21/22

Simpsons, Squerryes, Terlingham and Westwell. There will be more! You’ll also find many of these wonderful local wines served in Canterbury’s pubs, bars, restaurants and venues. Be sure to ask for them next time you’re out – it all helps to keep Kentish wine on everyone’s lips – literally!

Reflecting this boom in the Kent wine industry, this summer sees the inaugural edition of the Canterbury Wine Festival – bringing many of the finest Kent wine producers right into the heart of the city and celebrating the midsummer weekend. Hosted by Westgate Hall and Clive Barlow (Master of Wine, based at the nearby Goods Shed), the Festival launches on Friday 21 June and is open to the public on Saturday 22 June.

7

Clive Barlow Clive is a Canterbury local and runs Press Wine Services at The Goods Shed, Canterbury. He is an international wine judge and educator, as well as having worked as a consultant for Waitrose, Whitbread, Sotheby’s, IWC (International Wine Challenge) and more.

This festival is planned to become an annual event. Over the next 20 years, the UK wine industry is predicted to create some 30,000 new rural jobs, as well as giving a sizeable boost to the UK economy. The Festival is a one-stop shop for everyone to learn more and taste these wines –the public, educators, hoteliers, restaurant/bar owners and the wider hospitality industry. Kent wine producers confirmed for the festival so far include: Barnsole, Biddenden, Chapel Down, Chartham, Domaine Evremond, Elham Valley, Gusbourne, Herbert Hall, Hush Heath, Meopham,

Seeing The City Through The Eyes Of A Visitor

26

 Visit MyCanterbury.co.uk for more information

5 Hours in the City Returning to live in Canterbury in 2009 after 20 years away, it was quickly evident how much has changed. Canterbury is a truly international city – not just with its visitors, but its students and residents too. It has hundreds of years of rich history in welcoming pilgrims and visitors. Today’s visitors have guide books and tour guides to help get the best from their time here. So where would I recommend locals to visit? Can local residents ever enjoy their home city through the same eyes as a tourist? With 5 hours to zip around Canterbury, I would head off to…

The Westgate Towers Viewpoint and The Westgate Gardens Since the restoration of The Westgate Towers in 2009, this medieval entry point to the city offers a fantastic view over the whole city in all directions from its rooftop. The rest of the old city gaol building is now a very cool bar, with outdoor seating in the summer (a perfect suntrap) and a great place to watch the world go by. onepoundlane.co.uk/westgate-towers Then take a stroll in the pretty Westgate Gardens, enjoying the famous view of the timbered medieval houses across the river, and fabulous flower beds.

Canterbury Cathedral Locals don’t visit often enough – it’s an incredible, beautiful World Heritage Site right on the doorstep. Locals (living within 4 miles of the Bell Harry Tower) and those who work in the city centre can enjoy FREE entry all year with a precincts pass. canterbury-cathedral.org From April-Sept there’s a refreshment cabin open in the grounds, and you can buy coffee and cake with one of the most spectacular views in England thrown in for free, directly overlooking the Cathedral’s newly restored south side.

27

The Roman Museum One of my favourites – a little-known gem of a place, tucked away in a small doorway in Butchery Lane. The Roman Museum is home to some beautiful, original Roman pavement mosaic, preserved since its discovery after the Blitz bombing of Canterbury. There are very few in-situ Roman mosaics in the UK, and it’s so fascinating to see up close. You don’t need to be a tourist (or a history nerd) to be wowed by the contents of this great little place. If you’re local, even better – entry is FREE with a MyCanterbury card (available from any Canterbury museum). canterburymuseums.co.uk/romanmuseum

Canterbury’s River Tours

28

It’s not just for tourists! There are three excellent boat/ punting companies offering trips on the River Stour, winding through the city as the guides share the secrets of the glossy waterways and ancient buildings with their group. It’s a unique perspective, to see the sights from a boat, and one that so many visitors enjoy. You can even hire a boat to take you all the way to Chartham and back – a relaxing way to spend an hour! Family punting tickets from £28. Canterbury Punts: canterburypunting.co.uk Historic River Tours: canterburyrivertours.co.uk Westgate Punts: canterburypunts.uk The Franciscan Gardens are tucked away down Stour St, near the back of The Abode Hotel. Until a couple of years ago, I’d never noticed it before. It’s a secret haven in the city, with its own little chapel (still used) and places to sit, read, meet up with friends or simply relax in the sunshine, by the river. The unspoilt, flowermeadow feel of this park is so relaxing and peaceful. Definitely a great place to recharge and breathe. eastbridgehospital.org.uk Simply wandering, enjoying the pretty, cobbled streets and old buildings, and watching the world go by from a coffee shop allows a visitor to soak up the flavour of the city. Shopping for a local keepsake or bargain is also top of my list – I love both The Cathedral Quarter (Burgate, Buttermarket and Sun St) and The King’s Mile (Palace Street and Northgate) for both these pastimes.

There are many interesting buildings to note along your walk, including the iconic Conquest House in Palace Street, where Thomas Becket’s murderers lodged on the night before his murder. It’s now Unboxed, a packaging-free grocery store, and well worth a peek inside for its amazing timbers and fireplaces! Further down is the famous, muchphotographed wonky doorway, now home to Catching Lives bookshop, and an incredible historic building. You also won’t want to miss a much more recent addition to the city skyline – The Marlowe Theatre…visible across the city and much praised for its role in bringing visitors and locals into town each night, to enjoy a vast range of theatre, dance and music. Where else could host Matthew Bourne or Glyndebourne one week, and Saturday Night Fever and Michael McIntyre the next?! It’s one of the best theatre spaces in the country and we’re so lucky to have it!

Finally, a special mention must go to The Goods Shed – Canterbury’s award-winning covered market. It’s home to some great food stalls and produce experts, and a lovely place to have a coffee and watch the world go by. The building itself is only half the story – the people who make it tick are the rest! Find it in Station Road West, just past the Westgate Towers.

Five hours will fly by in Canterbury – but if you are local and find yourself with an afternoon to wander, try and see the city through the eyes of a visitor. You’ll love the place even more. By Kathy Moulton

Kent’s Remarkable Writers

Marlowe, Aphra Behn and Joseph Conrad explores the lives of three writers, their connections to Canterbury and the different times in which they lived. The exhibition is for all ages and gives visitors the opportunity to explore the past through a collection of objects and immersive activities that include the chance to dress-up as an Elizabethan actor and to use a vintage typewriter from Conrad’s time.

The Marlowe opens a new free exhibition to celebrate the lives and works of Canterbury’s worldfamous writers. Housed in The Marlowe Kit on Stour Street, Kent’s Remarkable Writers: The Worlds of Christopher

 Visit MyCanterbury.co.uk for more information

The exhibition is open to the public on Saturdays between 10am and 5pm and Sundays between 12pm and 5pm. Entry to the exhibition is free of charge. Kent’s Remarkable Writers is the latest addition to a programme of activities at The Marlowe Kit that aim to link the past with the modern world through this historically important and inspiring building, offering new ways to learn about Canterbury and its rich literary heritage.

The Marlowe Kit is also the home of The Marlowe’s creative classes, attended by over 200 participants every week and houses regular performances in the building’s Great Hall, including theatre, music, performance poetry and family shows. Deborah Shaw, Chief Executive of The Marlowe, said:

As well as the exhibition, this programme includes Marlowe’s Ghost, an exciting escape room experience themed around the life and death of Christopher Marlowe that has attracted over 1,200 visits by gamers, tourists and families. Escape Room: Marlowe’s Ghost is open Saturdays and Sundays (and Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during school holidays). Tickets are available from £19 per person, with family tickets available. Places can be booked by visiting marlowetheatre.com or by phoning 01227 787787.

“The Marlowe Kit shows what can happen when contemporary theatre-making and heritage practice come together to breathe new life into a beautiful historic building. It has been very moving to witness young poets performing under the magnificent oak ceiling of the Great Hall, families hunting for clues together to uncover the mystery of Christopher Marlowe’s death in the Jacobean world of the Escape Room and community groups and school children enjoying a host of drama-based workshops. Now the public will be able to enjoy a free exhibition which celebrates Canterbury’s rich literary heritage in accessible and interactive ways. I want to thank the brilliant Marlowe team and the local artists and craftspeople who have worked tirelessly to bring about this amazing transformation and our colleagues in the Museums and Galleries team from Canterbury City Council for contributing their expertise and support in Collections Care”. The Marlowe’s work in The Kit is part of Pioneering Places, an ambitious project that will make East Kent an even better place to live, work and visit by exploring heritage, developing civic pride and connecting artists and communities. Pioneering Places is supported through Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with Historic England and Artswork, the South East Bridge.

A Little History In the Middle Ages, Canterbury was a lively, thriving and cosmopolitan city, just like today! One of the most important events in Canterbury’s history was the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in the Cathedral on 29 December 1170, by four knights who were seen to have acted on behalf of King Henry II. Shortly after his death miracles started to happen, and Canterbury became a major centre of pilgrimage for those seeing cures at Becket’s shrine. Many visitors stayed in the city‘s medieval ‘hospitals’ and inns. The journey of a fictional group pilgrims was immortalised in the 14th century by Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. On 12th July 1174 , Henry II came to Canterbury to perform penance for the murder. He walked barefoot through the city in sackcloth and was flogged by cathedral monks.
