EDITOR’S LETTER Hi Lovelies, So it’s been another crazy month and we are so happy to close off the July Issue. July – seriously why is the year going by so fast? I know I am always harping on about the speed of the year and how quickly it seems to go by since I had a baby, but this part of the parenthood journey will never stop baffling me! My darling daughter is 2 years and 2 mths and was moved into the toddler room from the baby room at her day-care. I know I should be happy about this as it means she is developing and hitting her milestones, but I have to admit that it kind of made water fall out of my eyes. I promised myself that I wasn’t going to be one of these mums that always cried as her baby grows but I really can’t help it and every time she hits a new milestone the waterworks follow shortly there after. Back to the magazine, we are excited to finally announce the Winners of the 2017 My Child Magazine Excellence Awards. We would like to thank all of our amazing readers that participated in this years voting, without your voice, our awards wouldn’t be what they are. Now let’s take a look at what’s in the July Issue. This month is the Baby Issue and we have lots of great articles to help you with your parenting journey. If you are adding to your family and need some help with how to introduce a new baby to their sibling, we have you covered. If this is your first baby, then make sure you read the What to expect when bringing home baby article for some helpful tips. Are you having twins? Check out the caring for multiples article and help put those fears how to fears aside. A topic that is being discussed more and more these days is should you leave the cord connected after birth, we take a look at this topic in this months issue too. There are plenty more articles covering Cravings during pregnancy, What is a Natural and Gentle Caesarean?, Baby Hygiene, Toddler attachment, Keeping your Kids Healthy and Fit, Stay at home dads need support too and of course How a baby can change your relationship. All the usuals, interior, reviews, blog and much more can also be found in this issue too. Until next month

BABY

How to Care for Your Baby: The Billion Dollar Guide By Javier Olivo You’ve been through with one of the most emotional and exciting nine months of your life which is pregnancy, and you finally have your little one cradled in your arms. It’s the most beautiful moment of your life, and surely it is something that you’ll always remember. Bringing home a baby may seem like a daunting task, while new parents might still be floating on cloud nine, many soon begin to feel the pressure on how they will care for their newborn once they leave the hospital. First-time mothers, most especially, view it as a typically scary and stressful situation, which is entirely reasonable and understandable.

july 2017 | mychild

9

Most of this apprehension stems from the fact that there are a lot of considerations to be made. Parents make a lot of preparations for their infants. Babies need a lot of work, from feeding, clothing, burping, bathing and receiving the right amount of love and attention. Here are the key tips that you can follow and things you can prepare that might hopefully help your transition be as stressfree as possible. FEEDING It is imperative to be food-wise when it comes to your baby. From the early stages where they can only live with milk until their teething, there few important points you may want to write down. When breastfeeding, you should eat the right kind of foods. Stock up on fruits and vegetables, and healthy proteins. Drink your vitamin supplements. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and recreational drugs. Think of it this way: don’t eat or drink anything you wouldn’t want your baby to have. If you opt for cow milk protein-based formulas, choose the right kind of milk for your baby. Take into account that your infant might have any allergies. Make sure your bottles and bottle nipples are well-

cleaned and sterilized, to avoid your child from getting any bacteria and viruses. During the teething stage, your baby’s gums are quite sore and tender. Your toddler might be kicking up a fuss due to the discomfort they’re feeling from having their teeth grow out. During this time, you can only give them soft and easily chewable food, such as teething biscuits, green peas, steamed fish, and mashed potatoes. BATHING In bathing your baby, you may want to use an infant tub. Gather all the necessary supplies and lay out a towel on top of a broad, steady surface. Make sure the room is warm enough to avoid chilling your baby. Slowly slip them in the tub feet first, supporting their head and neck firmly. Use mild soap moderately. Start by washing their head first, and slowly dabbing your way down. Rinse them thoroughly with clean water and carefully wipe them down with the towel that you prepared beforehand. Before dressing them, you may want to apply a gentle baby moisturizer after their bath. CLOTHING When dressing up your tiny bundle of joy, you can choose from a whole array of baby clothing. It is highly essential for you to equip your infant with the right kind of clothing for the right kind of weather. Here are some types of clothing to consider according to the season. Summer Choose clothes that have light, neutral tones with breathable fabrics. Avoid wearing dark clothing, and abstain from scratchy clothing fabrics. If you decide to go out in the sun, you may dress your baby in lightweight long sleeves

10

july 2017 | mychild

to protect their delicate skin from the harsh rays of the sun, since their skin is much more susceptible to UV damage. Always be keen to notice the warning signs of an overheated infant: flushed skin, rapid breathing, and restlessness are some of the most commonly seen. Winter One mainstream rule when dressing your newborn during the cold season is to clothe them with the same amount of layers that you’re wearing plus one. Take this situation for instance; you’re going out in a hat, scarf, gloves, sweater, undershirt, and jeans, your baby should wear the same, along with a blanket or an extra layer of undergarments as his plus one. Always keep in mind to avoid overdressing your baby. Steer clear from garments where materials might be too thin or too thick. Stick to layering clothes, since it’ll be easier to remove if needed. Don’t forget to bring a hat, mittens, and booties or socks to protect their head, hands, and feet. Be attentive to the warning signs that show if an infant feels too cold: few of the more rampant signs are the reddening of toes and fingers, shivering, and crying. SWADDLING Swaddling is the practice of wrapping your newborn in a blanket for warmth. It is important because it allows the baby’s internal thermostat to be able to adjust to their surroundings during the first few days of their birth. According to Baby Center, To swaddle correctly: • Lay a blanket on a flat surface like a diamond and fold down the top corner about 6 inches to form a straight edge.

• Place your baby on his back so that the upper part of the fabric is at shoulder level. • Bring your baby’s left arm down. Pull the corner of the blanket near his left hand over his arm and chest, and tuck the leading edge under his back on his right side. • Bring your baby’s right arm down. Pull the corner of the blanket near his right hand over his arm and chest, and tuck the cloth under his left side. • Twist or fold the bottom end of the blanket and tuck it loosely behind your baby, making sure that both legs are bent up and out from his body, his hips can move, and his legs can spread apart naturally. It is of great importance to know how to swaddle an infant properly. Improper swaddling may cause damage to the joints and damage soft cartilage. TAKEAWAY There is no sure-fire way to raise a child perfectly. Every single thing is unique, with their quirks and personalities. All mothers have one mindset in common: to always give the best for their children. One way to do this is to prepare yourself for raising your kids. You need to learn what, when, and how to feed and bathe them, take into consideration their adjustments to the real world, and equip your newborn with the right set of clothes. These are just the tips of the iceberg of your incredible journey in life with your little one. BIRTH

SHOULD YOU LEAVE THE CORD CONNECTED AFTER BIRTH? By Jana Angeles

While it may be hard to believe, there are numerous benefits when it comes to delaying umbilical cord clamping for your baby. However, we understand it’s a personal choice for all mothers and a decision that can onl y be made to their discretion. While there are numerous benefits to this, there are also some negatives associated with delayed umbilical cord clamping. We weigh in the pros and cons of leaving the umbilical cord connected after birth...

july 2017 | mychild

13

PROS OF LEAVING THE UMBILICAL CORD ATTACHED

CONS OF LEAVING THE UMBILICAL CORD ATTACHED

• It’s standard procedure for doctors to snip off the umbilical cord around 30 seconds after birth, but to get the health benefits from it, it’s recommended to leave it on for at least 2 mins or when the cord starts pulsating. The baby receives extra blood from the cord so this can in fact help them store extra nutrients to help boost their iron in their body.

• While the research seems unclear, some have said that delaying umbilical cord clamping can cause jaundice for the baby.

• Babies have a lower risk of being anaemic in their early stages of life if the umbilical cord isn’t cut off immediately. Again, because of the extra iron stores, leaving the cord attached can help them greatly. • Other benefits on leaving the cord attached include: protection from lead poisoning, healthier birth weights and higher concentrations of haemoglobin. Haemoglobin helps transport oxygen around the body, which has benefited premature babies to have increased oxygenation around the brain tissue according to a 2007 study by Baenziger et al.

• There’s been concern over the extra blood received from the umbilical cord. Though the baby receives extra blood, some are concerned over the extra RBCs (Red Blood Cells) that are being transferred into their body. This is the opposite to anaemia called polycythemia. However, this has not been a pressing issue among infants, showing no negative effects to their health whatsoever. • If the woman giving birth is HIV positive, there are some concerns of the umbilical cord having her blood. This could put her baby at risk from an infection if the cord is attached for longer. SO WHAT SHOULD I DO? While there are concerns over leaving the umbilical cord for longer than 30 seconds, it’s really up to you to decide whether this is something you’re willing to do. As with any research, take note of both sides and see which side you’re swayed to more. There is a lot of research noting down the numerous health benefits of keeping the umbilical cord on, but it’s also smart to stay cautious especially if it’s related to the well-being of your baby. Just remember, at the end of the day the health of your baby isn’t determined by what you should and shouldn’t do with the umbilical cord. But if you feel like it’s necessary, then you shouldn’t let other people’s opinions affect you whether if they’re for or against keeping the umbilical cord on

Pregnancy Preppers: Introducing Baby #2 to the Household By Javier Olivo. You come home with your new bundle of joy. At your doorstep stands the older child, used to being the centre of your attention. You now face a dilemma. But that’s about to change. Bringing home a newborn the second time around proves to be quite challenging. A new sibling can impact the family in ways you might not have known before. When you were bringing home your first baby, you were wholly committed to focusing your attention on your newborn. With the coming of a second child, you now have to figure out how your new baby might react to having an older sibling, or vice versa.

As a parent, it is essential to prepare your As a parent, it is essential to prepare your kids for the possibility of having a new sibling. You need to brace them for the changes they are bound to face and to reassure them of your continuous love and affection despite the addition of a new family member. One should know how to encourage a healthy sibling bond, and in turn, make the adjustments more dynamic and proactive. Discussing the baby’s homecoming before, during, and even after the pregnancy can make things easier for everyone. Done correctly, it will be a stepping stone for your toddler to learn the essential traits of patience, independence, and social interaction, to name a few. DOOMSDAY PREPPERS During the pregnancy, slowly introduce your older child to the idea of having a younger sibling. Have them ‘interact’ with your belly and ask them what they might want to say to their new baby brother or sister. Read baby books together and answer whatever questions they might have about the baby. Look through their baby photos as your bonding time. Show them how they were when they too were infants. Ask them for help in decorating the nursery. Inclusion is vital. Take your child with you to your doctor’s appointments and have them watch the ultrasound and listen to the baby’s heartbeat. Make your kid or kids, if you have more than one, a part of the process. This way, they won’t feel left out and replaced by their younger sibling. The longer your child has gotten used to the fact of having a new sibling, the easier it gets. DAY OF RECKONING The day has come! After coming back from the hospital, one thing you can do is to ask your older kids to ‘help mummy out with

her’ stuff. As I said earlier, involvement is necessary. Here are more helpful tips to establish a good sibling-to-sibling bond among your kids. • Spreading the Love Children are very jealous creatures, vying for mummy and daddy’s attention every second of the day. Especially with all the fuss centered around their new sibling, they can get envious and want the same attention for themselves. When relatives coo over their new sibling saying, “She has the prettiest eyes!” reply by saying, “Just like her older brother.” Try to attribute some of the praise to them. Spend time with As impractical or seem, encourage their time with

each child equall y. unrealistic as it may your kids to share each other. When

feeding your little one, ask your eldest about their day, talk to them, ask them to join you for a chat. It is also important to be a good listener. Allow your child to vent out whatever frustrations they might have towards their new sibling, or toward their newfound responsibility of being an older sibling. • Co-sleeping One of the most shared and seamless ways to get your kids to adjust to each other is by co-sleeping, which means to sleep in the same bed or within the proximity of each other. One of the most common co-sleeping arrangements is sharing the same bed or having two beds in the same room. You can have your infant sleep beside their older sibling in some sleepmaker mattresses. Or you can have the baby’s cradle in the same room with their siblings.

Co-sleeping can guide your kids to observe each other’s personal space. It will help them gain awareness of each other’s needs, and it will teach them how to interact with their sibling more naturally. For the mummy, it makes nighttime separation anxieties much less of a hassle! ESTABLISH RESPONSIBILITIES One way to make your older children feel wanted is by giving them responsibilities. Acknowledge their talents and skills. You can say things like, “You’re so good at drawing, Jamie, maybe you could teach little Samantha how to draw when she get’s a little bit older.” Recognize their positive traits and encourage them to pass them over to their new sibling. NURTURE COMMUNICATION We all know for a fact that babies cry a lot. And sometimes we can’t even figure out why! Teach your kids why babies do the things they do. Explain to them that babies cry because they still don’t know how to talk yet. Act as their translator to help them understand better. TAKEAWAY As Jim Butler put it, “There’s nothing that makes you more insane than family. Or happier. Or more exasperated. Or more secure.” Raising children is one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences a parent has to go through. Every child will go through spats and quarrels with their siblings, but with a little nudge and lots of love and guidance, you can mold them to grow up as the best of friends. BABY HYGIENE By Cara Barilla; Educational Columnist and Journalist In today’s modern world we are constantly being surrounded by false advertisement for the correct application of your child’s cleanliness. Whether it states “organic” when it’s really not, advertises as gentle cleansing when if you turn over to the labelled ingredients you may find strong alcohol, detergents, parabens, sulphites and other harsh content.

It’s best to understand the true needs of the proper precautions for child’s hygiene, where on your baby’s body you should clean and how to clean certain areas, with what tools and what, how often and the proper precautions and application to use. Below are some effective methods not only to sustain healthy baby cleanliness, but to also prevent illness and poor hygiene. Every body part needs to be taken with proper care: Clean your child’s gums & tongue by using water and a cloth after morning and evening feeds to get the most hygienic results. Rub front and back of their teeth whilst using lukewarm water. At 12 months you can use a soft child safe toothbrush to clean their teeth with lukewarm water around twice a day. Specialized child and infant scissors, clippers or a filer is helpful to remove excess nail length and sharp areas. It’s helpful if your partner helps you at this point if your baby moves a lot. Or you can do so when your child is sleeping if they are a deep sleeper. Always wash your hands thoroughly before holding your little one’s umbilical cord. Clean the area softly with some lukewarm water and a cloth. Ensure the stump is dry after bathing by patting the stump softly with a soft baby towel. Always read the label: it’s crucial to prevent allergy, eczema and other irritations by always reading the label. Try to stay away from product ingredients such as detergents, perfume, alcohol, parabens, sulphates and sulphites. If you are making your own baby products its best to consult your local dermatologist, skin specialist and natural skin clinician to determine what is best suitable for children and to cater for their age. When

24

july 2017 | mychild

storing moisturizes, oils, soap, other creams and tools always use a bpa free container. Keep your containers dated at all times to review when it’s best to dispose of. Boys and girls have different needs: cleaning a boy is very different to cleaning a little girl for example; when bathing it’s best not to leave your little girl in the bath for too long as this can lead to UTI’s as the harsh detergents can creep into their body as your little girls uterus is still forming its best to have quick baths or shower play time. When bathing your little girl, dampen a cotton ball, gently place her legs a little apart to wipe amid the labia area with the soft damp baby towel. Always start at the front and gently wipe backwards. For your little boy, softly rinse the genital area with lukewarm water whilst bathing. Give your little ones some ‘nappy-free’ exposure to air the skin thus preventing nappy rash. Make a schedule for hygiene checks: once a month is best to get regular checks from your local gp. They will look at their genital region, face, creases, ears, eyes and mouth to determine the progression and take precautions for any health issue which needs to be managed. Always record your baby’s health progression in their health book or blue book. This certainly includes hygiene checkups. No matter how cautious a parent can be, caring and monitoring for your children can be a difficult one and very contradictory. You will be getting all sorts of different advice from different professionals which may or may not clash with each other which can leave you wondering what decision to make.

The best decision is to understand your famil y’s unique situation, record all necessary information and decide what is best for your unique scenario. Speak to your local gp or heath care professionals if you see some red flags. The best thing to do is to not leave concerns astray.

By Jana Angeles As your child grows older, you’ll notice they’ll experience a ‘clingy’ phase. Grabbing you by the arm or leg and begging you not to leave while looking at you with their cute little eyes, it’s a tough world being a parent when you want them to become independent and be okay while you’re away for periods of time. There’s nothing worse than dropping off your child to daycare, clinging on to you with no mercy, crying with lots of tears and mucus running down their face. It’s a bit embarrassing, but you just have to accept the fact that it happens. We talk you through the phases of toddler attachment and what to do to help your child go on to the path of independence!

july 2017 | mychild

27

YOU’RE THE FAVOURITE PARENT It always feels good to be the favourite parent, but not in the context of child clinginess. If you find that your daughter or son gets too attached with you and it has become difficult to leave the house without them chasing after you, ask the parent their less clingy towards to spend more time with your child. If it means taking over the bath and bedtime story duties, let them take the reins for once so there’s balance between mum and dad time. TRY THE LEAVE-THE-ROOM TRICK If your toddler is occupied with something, try and leave them by themselves in the room. If you are about to give them a nappy change, let them know that you’re nearby and getting a new nappy for them. Keep talking to them constantly so they know that you haven’t technically left them. If you do this on the regular, they could get used to their newfound independence! LET THEM PLAY WITH OTHERS If you feel like they depend on your presence all the time, ease your toddler into playing

with other people. Whether it be their friends or immediate family members, let them interact and engage with them instead of you. Avoid carrying them at all times and ensure that they trust the person they’re playing with. It’s understandable if your child feels anxious or shy around new people, especially if kids their own age are playing in the park. But it’s definitely important to expose them to all different kinds of environments so they feel comfortable creating their own space of play without you. If your child is extra clingy, sit them on your lap while they play and let them get used to that. The more times you do this, the easier it gets to just place them on the floor so that they can resume playing by themselves. CHILDCARE Childcare is tough for some parents, especially if their toddlers are clingy and don’t want them to go! We feel that pain, we really do - it’s almost overwhelming for us as parents to get to that stage of dropping off our kids to childcare. If you’re finding it difficult to drop off your child and always feel guilty about it, slowly ease your toddler into going to childcare a couple of hours a week. Make sure you get into a suitable routine and always give them a kiss and a goodbye hug when you leave. Reassure them that you will be picking them up afterwards. Repeat it if necessary. After they become a little more confident, have them stay a full-day in childcare. Celebrate that they’re not throwing tantrums or crying anymore. Embrace the small wins we go through as parents. Toddler attachment isn’t necessarily a bad thing because all of them go through it at some point. In some way or another, your child will gain the confidence to be independent from you. Just be patient and give it time. At the end of the day, they are still kids so ensure you give them extra support and love during the ‘clingy’ stage of growing up.

BABY

CARING FOR MULTIPLES By Jana Angeles

Parenthood is challenging enough, but imagine having to take care of multiple babies at once? As most of you will know, it’s a nightmare for some parents who have twins and triplets. It’s both a blessing and a curse if you think about it; caring for multiple little ones, while ensuring they receive the best care - meaning you have to bottle feed, nurse them to sleep and more all at once!

july 2017 | mychild

31

It can often feel like you’re running a marathon half the time and we understand how difficult it may be transitioning to be the best parents of multiple children. But let’s keep in mind that it isn’t impossible to raise good kids, it just means time management and the ability to multi-task is a must for this. So what are the best ways to care for multiples? What do we need to do to ensure they receive equal love and care from us? BE OPEN TO EXPERIMENTATION WHEN IT COMES TO NAP TIME Nap time is a tough one, especially for parents who have multiples. When you’re raising twins, it becomes a constant play field, doing your best to give equal care for both babies. You’ve got to be open to experimentation when it comes to putting them to bed together. You can come up with creative solutions such as placing them inside a twin-made stroller, putting one in a swing and one in a carrier. It can be as simple as laying them together on the floor. It sounds like an exhausting trip, but when you finally find something that works for you, stick to it! MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE SAME ROUTINE AS EACH OTHER Routines are important when it comes to raising your children. Without them, life would be too chaotic. As you would for one baby, you should nurse, bottle-feed and put the babies to sleep at the same time. It’s challenging to do this with two or more babies, but if you want them to be in-sync, the sacrifice is worth it. As parents, you should work together effectively, taking equal share of the baby duties and stepping in when the other parent needs a break. Never let another parent do all the work - it’s a team effort. TRAIN THEM TO SLEEP TOGETHER Before you start doing this, be sure to consult the advice of your pediatrician. You should start doing sleep training no earlier than 3 months of age. If you successfully do this, you will find that the babies can nurse themselves

32

july 2017 | mychild

to sleep straightaway without any assistance at all, leaving you with some time for yourself to catch a break. It’s ultimate bliss when they sleep through the night without any interruption whatsoever - make the most of that time! MAKE SURE YOU ALTERNATE HOLDING AND FLOOR TIME Do you feel like sometimes you’re holding one baby more than the other? We’re all guilty of this at some point, but it doesn’t necessarily mean we can’t change it! Get

into the habit of alternating holding and floor time when raising twins, triplets, etc. Once the baby on the floor becomes upset, switch over and let the baby that you’ve nursed have some floor time. It can be super exhausting doing this, but just think about how much all your babies deserve equal time to be held and to spend time lying on the floor! YOU CAN DO IT! Things are getting to the point where you’re exhausted and want to go to bed, but with

the non-stop crying from your babies, you may feel like you’re the worst parent in the world. Don’t worry, we all face our bad days. Remember that just because you have to put more effort into raising twins, triplets, etc, doesn’t necessarily mean it has to stay like that forever. Your children will grow to become independent people, and your efforts in raising them will no longer be needed once they move out of home. Focus on the positives of your journey raising multiples and enjoy the ride. All you have to do is believe yourself!

ONE THOUSAND TREES Written & Illustrated by Kyle Hughes-Odgers In this beautifully illustrated book, Frankie takes a journey in her mind, out of the dreary, barren city and into an immense forest where she can interact with the peaceful, nurturing trees. The magic of the book lies in its ability to transport readers along with Frankie, so we feel that we too are experiencing the woodlands in all their ma jestic beauty. With very few words in the story, the pictures in this book succeed in creating a world that draws readers into a dreamlike connection with nature. Best suited for children aged 2-8.

WHATCHA BUILDING? Written by Andrew Daddo, Illustrated by Stephen Michael King It is difficult not to approach this book with high expectations – Andrew Daddo is the author of more than 25 books, and Stephen Michael King has illustrated over 50! Happily, Whatcha Building? doesn’t disappoint. King’s signature bright and whimsical illustrations are made all the more engaging by the collage style he uses in this gorgeous book for children aged 3-7. Readers will guess along with Big Bruce, as he tries to figure out what Little Davey is building with all the scrap timber he collects from Bruce’s building site, and will be delighted to discover his completed creation, which remains a mystery until the very end of the story.

This book is both engaging and educational, and is sure to score big goals for footy-lovers aged 3-6.

THERE’S A MOOSE ON THE LOOSE Written by Lucy Feather, Illustrated by Stephan Lomp This is an engaging, interactive book in which readers are encouraged to follow the arrows marking the path that Moose takes, as he races through building after building en route to a mystery destination. Along the way, he accidentally hooks a collection of crazy items onto his antlers, and a wild chase ensues as the townsfolk try to retrieve their belongings. LIFE IN THE FAST LANE WRITTEN BY: SHEREE ECHLIN

Does it ever end? While I’m busy trying not to pull my hair out, the mini versions of me are on their usual path of destruction and laughing back at mummy. Because apparently not listening to mummy is the funniest thing ever. And when they gang up together of course it’s even funnier to defy/poke fun at/destroy mummy! They know when you are down and they love it. It takes about five minutes of peaceful happy times before chaos ensues again. These days it’s usually one child stirring the other because they can and things escalate from there, leaving me trying to work out who to yell at….sorry, I mean speak to in a calm voice….first. It’s funny how nicely they play together when they want/have to, but the minute I’m not looking the world’s biggest drama unfolds over the silliest of things. I know I can’t talk because I used to try and get my older brother in trouble when we were growing up. Not that it always worked mind you, he had some sneaky tricks of his own and mum was pretty good at working out who the instigator ended up being. But it’s good to see the old sibling war is alive and well for me these days, just a little bit of history repeating. The attitude of my three-year-old (yes three not 13 or 30) is insane! Seriously,

40

july 2017 | mychild

how much attitude can a three-year-old have? Has karma come back to bite me a thousand times over?! If I say no, she throws yes back at me. She huffs and puffs, stomps her feet, rolls her eyes, screams and squeals. It gets even better (not sure who for) when she tries to tell me what to do. Don’t even get me started on her very independent little sister!! Monkey see monkey do springs to mind right now! The strong-willed determination that I love in my girls is also sometimes my downfall. They know how to win me over with their cute smiles but also push me down with their full-on craziness. But they know when mummy starts to move or turns on her “Mummy voice” that they are about to find themselves in a lot of trouble. Sometimes they laugh and run away but mummy is always faster. Well for now anyway (haha!). It’s funny how much of my own mum I can see or hear in myself sometimes. You have to laugh about some of the things you say or do because you know you learnt from the best (thanks mum!). I can only hope I’m doing a good enough job that my girls might feel the same way if they choose to have their own children one day. I have always been honest in admitting that being a mum can be a tough gig. It’s not exactly getting any easier as my girls

continue to grow either. But it’s definitely changing, whether it is for the better, the jury is still out on that one! Although not babies anymore (they will always be my babies whether they like it or not) I know they still rely very heavily on me and it’s nice to have a bond only we share. We do get to have a lot more fun together and there are always plenty of giggles, especially when it comes to certain body noises (we can’t let the boys have all the fun there!). But it’s certainly not always fun and games and there are definitely times where being a parent can suck. Discipline is a necessary evil, but I know my girls need rules to help create boundaries as well. Unfortunately, I can’t always be the good guy and I have been told a few times lately by Miss Izzie when she’s in trouble that I’m not her mummy anymore. It lasts about two minutes, but it’s never nice to hear!

What I never expected to gain from being a mum is a greater sense of achievement from not only creating but shaping two little lives in the world. I was given the privilege of having these beautiful but very cheeky little girls and for whatever reason they chose me to be their mum... although, I can’t help thinking maybe the stork got lost on the way to the cabbage patch (just kidding!). They may not always like me (too bad they’re stuck with me) but I hope one day they can look back and see I only did what I thought was best…well, most of the time anyway. There is always something happening in my crazy world of being a mum! Read more of my crazy ups and downs at shereeechlin.com

BIRTH

WHAT IS A

NATURAL & GENTLE CESAREAN? By Jana Angeles It can be very scary for mothers to hear that they have to undergo a C-section instead of a natural childbirth just like they planned. Though there are negative connotations attached to a cesarean birth, things can be done to make it a much more pleasant experience for mothers out there. As with anything in life, planning is a must when you want to prepare for the most natural and gentle cesarean. It’s good to prepare now rather than later because not many mothers expect to undergo a C-section, but when it happens, it can be because of an emergency or complications during birth.

july 2017 | mychild

43

THE AFTERMATH OF A CESAREAN BIRTH There are many negative outcomes when it comes to a C-section. It can vary from person to person - but that doesn’t mean it isn’t inclusive to the fact that mothers face longer hospital stays, taking weeks to recover, lifting & driving restrictions and also the emotional trauma and the risk of postpartum depression afterwards. Mothers that have gone through a C-section birth know how painful it can be and they may feel unlucky to experience this compared to what other mothers have gone through. It also means that babies are unlikely to be held by their mothers immediately after birth as the medical team have to assess if he or she needs to be taken into the NICU - missing out the moments where most mothers get to breastfeed, nurse and spend quality time with their newborn. DOES THE EXPERIENCE HAVE TO BE TRAUMATIC WHEN IT COMES TO A C-SECTION? Not necessarily. With careful planning and discussion, you can prepare for a gentle cesarean if you already know you’ll be needing a C-section. It’s also good to prepare for one just incase a natural birth process cannot happen due to a medical intervention. Always exercise caution and be ready for the unexpected. The best thing you can do is to show strength physically and mentally. WHAT IS A ‘GENTLE CESAREAN’? The purpose of a gentle cesarean is to create a relaxing atmosphere for mothers undergoing a C-section. It is meant to mimic all the qualities of a natural birthing process, during and immediately after the child is born. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A VAGINAL SWAB? HOW WILL IT HELP MY BABY? In a vaginal birth, the baby will go through the birth canal. During this process, the baby would’ve been exposed to microbes - these transfer on the mouth of the

44

july 2017 | mychild

baby and on the skin. The bacteria from these microbes are meant to keep your baby healthy and can reduce the risk of contracting Crohn’s disease, heart disease, infections and more. Because cesarean babies don’t get this bacteria transfer, they may be at risk of experiencing obesity, asthma, allergies and other health problems. During a gentle cesarean, a doctor or midwife can take a vaginal swab and spread it around the baby’s mouth and skin to promote the same health benefits received from a natural birth.

WHAT STEPS SHOULD I FOLLOW FOR A GENTLE CESAREAN? 1. Find a doctor who is open to the idea of a gentle cesarean: Find a doctor who is familiar with the procedure. Let your concerns be heard in the case where your doctor becomes unavailable on the time of your child’s birth, instead of a doctor who has no idea what to do, request for a medical team that can handle a gentle cesarean. You have the right to take the extra time needed before a surgery to be able to find a team that can make it possible for you.

2. Research your hospital’s rules & regulations: Do your research and find out if any of your hospital’s rules and regulations get in the way of you having a gentle cesarean. Even if your doctor is an expert in performing a C-section, the hospital’s rules and regulations will override the gentle cesarean procedure. This is because there are certain practices that are approved onl y if they don’t breach any of the rules and regulations implemented by the hospital. It’s okay to grieve about it if you’re unable to do a gentle cesarean - life can be unfair sometimes when it comes to these things. 3. Have a Birth Plan in place: Even if you are planning for a natural childbirth, a gentle cesarean may be your back-up plan. Make a birth plan you’re happy with in preparation for a gentle cesarean and make several copies of it, storing it away in your car’s glove compartment, your purse and hospital bag. Your birth team (obstetrician, midwife, doula, neonatologist, pediatrician, anesthesiologist, and operating room nurses) should also have a copy of it so they know what to abide when taking part in the gentle cesarean birth. 4. It’s your birth experience: It’s your time to shine and to do what’s in your best interests. If you are planning on a gentle cesarean, make sure you’re clear on what you want and your expected outcomes. A gentle cesarean is meant to be a peaceful surgical procedure. If you have had a traumatising experience with birth, let this be known to you that a gentle cesarean can help you recover from it. A mother undergoing a C-section can have a positive experience with the right preparation and medical team.

THE BABYLOVE COSIFIT™ DREAM Are you frustrated with the nappies you’re currently using for your baby? Do they leave your little one with red marks, rashes or dreaded leakage?

Making sure that your baby’s bottom can breathe easily and stay nice and dry is what every parent wants. We all want to ensure that we are getting a quality product that is gentle on our baby’s skin. go wrong with nappy changing time. (* Newborn & Infant only) • They provide sizing indicators to avoid nappy mix ups at change time, particularly helpful if you have more than one baby in nappies. They have been designed to be ultra absorbent and gentle on your baby’s skin so they are excellent to use both day and night. BabyLove Cosifit™ Nappies are suitable for boys and girls and have an extensive range to suit all your needs, from premmies right through to junior size. The BabyLove Cosifit™ Nappies are the ultimate pick for parents. Not only are the super absorbent, reliable and comfortable – which are three main things parents dream about when it comes to selecting the right nappy. If this wasn’t enough to convince you, we had 3 everyday mum that read My Child Magazine review the BabyLove Cosifit™ nappies and here’s what they had to say: “Recently my 2 year old and I were offered a box of Cosifit™ nappies to trial in Walker size 12-17kg. Suitable for both boys and girls. They are made of a soft material that doesn’t cause red marks around the legs and the tabs were great and didn’t tear or not stick unlike some other brands we have used. The stretchy waist was great making it comfortable for my daughter.

I also love that the nappies each have a size indicator on them making it so much easier at change time especially when out and about. Nothing worse than having to hope you have the right size nappy only to start changing and it’s not the right size. I loved that the nappies seemed to be of a bigger fit so my daughter would be able to stay in the walker size for quite some time. I would definitely recommend BabyLove Cosifit™ Fit nappies to any new mums and will definitely be telling all my friends with children in nappies about my BabyLove experience. I will also be using these nappies from day one for my newborn who is due July” -

Alexandra

“BabyLove are reliable, comfortable, affordable and are great to use both day and night. I have found that they hold quite a lot of liquid in between changes and the liquid is spread across the nappy. This ensures my baby is comfortable in between changes and doesn’t have a huge bulge of nappy in between her legs. The Cosifit™ design is great. I have found that this design doesn’t leave red marks or cut into her skin like other brands - it even helps to hold in all of the poo explosions.

nappies not holding it in the side. After a few months of going through the soaking of clothes the multiple baths some days, I figured surely there has to something better on the market. I changed to BabyLove. I was sold from the first nappy I put on. The fit was great, no more explosions and the nappies were nice and soft but yet super absorbent. I wish I had tried them from when she was a newborn. We recently had our second child on the 20/04/2017 and this time I stocked up on BabyLove nappies to give them a go from the start. BabyLove has the a little cut out in them to accommodate the cord and clip so no folding required. The biggest thing we are finding is the value for money using BabyLove nappies, having two kids in nappies is costly on a single wage but these are definitely affordable even when they are not on sale. From personal experience, I would highly recommend these nappies to all mums” -

Corrina

Stay at home dads By Cara Barilla educational columnist and journalist In 2017 the fundamental role for good parenting doesn’t always stay to one gender. Sometimes in this day and age the mother of the two plays a vital role financially thus leaving the father to stay at home and support the children. Whether you are in this role or not; there are no traditional “rights or wrongs” to this matter as long as there is strong foundations of healthy role modelling, support, guidance and care. In westernized society, the higher levels of fathers becoming “house husbands” has rapidly increased over the last 5 years.

When you are a stay at home dad, it can be extremely overwhelming as some couples don’t have a choice in this consequence. Here are some simple steps to assist in the healthy progression of being a stay at home dad in 2017. Embrace the unique dad in you; Your children love you for you. Try not to be their boss. As men naturally take charge and leadership and can play the “alpha male” and CEO role with much instinct; this is not the case when dealing with children. It’s best to bring out the fun and nurturing side of you. Do lots of research to adapt to the nurturer role with more loving support. Children may learn with fear or retaliation if being dealt under a hard and strict role. Balance is key. It’s healthy to balance all kinds of your natural personality with the lightest heart and best intention. Try play some educational and practical games to educate them with new routines. Connect with other dads; Jump on facebook, Instagram or connect with your local early childhood community to jump on board with other fathers who are going through then exact same situation as you. You’d be surprised that there are so many in your radius that is sharing your lifestyle. Sharing advice and stories with like-minded dads will help you boost your confidence and will ensure you that you are not doing a bad job. Not to mention you could meet some life-long friends along the way too! Keep a solid routine; Staying grounded helps you keep mental and physical control of your surroundings. Children naturally like being guided by a set plan and structure. Set boundaries, get to know your children’s eating, sleeping and bathing schedules. You will find that predictability in a day will help you feel less stressed, you will find a lot of clutter in your mind will cease to exist, and there will be plenty of room for extra activities and educational playtime.

july 2017 | mychild

Don’t stress! One of the worst things in this situation that you could do not only to yourself but to your children is to stress. Try and organise yourself for the day, drink plenty of water, eat healthy and think healthy to stay connected with yourself and your surroundings. Its important to keep in contact with other people throughout the day to assist with anything you may need assistance with, whether you are mentally instable from a scary incident or just need some adult conversation, balance is key. Take your role with pride; this job is not the easiest one, and for some men, may not be taken seriously. Just remember that this is the most important role you could possibly embark on. You are responsible for the health, wellbeing and mental & physical growth of your little one. It’s a tough ride so just accept it with pride. Ensure to yourself that you and mentally and physically prepared for this life changing role. Have a chat to your local gp before or during fatherhood as they can provide you with personalized regimes and practice. Don’t stay at home! To keep your wellbeing and your childrens wellbeing at best interest, its best to balance indoor and outdoor life with confidence. This will educate your little ones with the difference of manners in public, discipline, geography, education on surroundings and routine. Whether you are taking on this role long term or short term, this is a role and experience which will mold your childrens foundations from the very beginning. Its crucial to communicate to your partner, parents and close loved ones for some practical advice. This will ultimately help you construct a safe living situation for yourself and your surroundings. Rite Aid Hydrogel Breast Discs and Nipple Serum Cracked, sore and even bleeding nipples are a rite of passage for any breastfeeding mother. Whether it’s your first child or fourth, the pain and discomfort you can experience during breastfeeding can sadly detract from this amazing time of bonding with your baby. Rite Aid have come to the rescue with two amazing products, the Hydrogel Breast Discs and Hydrogel Nipple Serum. Not only do they help in providing immediate pain relief but they also cool and soothe your sore nipples. The Hydrogel Breast Discs have been providing breastfeeding mums with relief and are highly regarded because of the benefits they offer which includes: • The dressings cool and soothe the wound area, at the same time, restoring moisture to the wound. • The dressings are water based treatments designed to provide a moist environment to accelerate the healing process. • Unlike traditional dressings, hydrogel dressings do not adhere to the wound, reducing the trauma to the skin when it is removed. • When applied to a wound, the hydrogel creates a barrier around the wound to protect against bacteria and excessive fluid loss.

52

july 2017 | mychild

3 My Child Readers reviewed the product and this is what they loved most about the Hydrogel Breast Discs: “I’m not sure what I would do without this product. There is nothing out there that compares to the relief I have when I use the breast discs. My nipples were sore and red and I was constantly having to express and rest. The discs soothed my pain and more importantly have help heal my broken and damaged skin so I can breastfeed again – love them.” “An easy application disc which can comfortably be worn in-between feeding, without any bulky visible lines under tops. The gel is evenly distributed onto a hygienically sealed disc which can be peeled on and off with ease. Placing the discs into the fridge for an even more cooling soothing relief is an added treat” “I have been a frequent user of the hydrogel breast discs for both of my children whilst breastfeeding. The instant relief they provide me are a godsend - especially in the first 4-6 weeks after birth. The discs offer a cooling agent to the breast and nipple which allows them to breathe also. They last roughly 24 hours and are quite comfortable. I have been known to give these as gifts to a new mum and they are extremely thankful for them” Although the Hydrogel Nipple Serum is new to the market, it’s definitely setting a high bar in the standards we have come to expect of Rite Aid Breastfeeding Product Range. The Hydrogel Nipple Serum soothes severely cracked nipples and is safe to use while breastfeeding. Upon application, the product benefits include: • The serum helps to cool the skin,

• It creates the ideal environment for healing and restoring your skin’s natural moisture so you can return to breastfeeding sooner. • It’s non-toxic and safe to use while breastfeeding Applying the serum at the first signs of reddening or soreness will help you maintain nipple health while your breastfeeding. Our reviewers were very impressed with the serum too, here’s what they had to say: “I was really excited to try this product as I have been an avid user of the hydrogel breast discs for some time now. There is no doubt that the gel/serum is some sort of liquid magic” “The serum is something I had not used before and since using it I have found that it is just as good as the breast discs with more of a focus on the nipple itself. Once again it offers relief and cools the nipple down straight away. You do not need a large amount at a time and it doesn’t make a mess all over your bra or feeding top. The serum smells nice and is not overpowering. It is not terribly sticky either. It’s something I would buy and use in the future after having a newborn” “I would recommend this to any busy, out and about breastfeeding mum. All the benefits of the discs in a jar – it’s liquid gold. It’s easy to apply and the convenience of being able to breastfeed once it is applied is timesaver especially when you have a hungry bub on your hands” Breastfeeding mothers Australia wide have been using and recommending Rite Aid Breastfeeding Products so that they return to breastfeeding sooner. If you haven’t experienced the Rite Aid difference for yourself, grab yours today!

KIDS

july 2017 | mychild

Keep your kid fit and healthy By Paul Trevino Healthy living and being physically fit is a common issue that adults are focused on in their everyday life. At times, the goals and standards are so high, and it becomes hard to achieve everything. You don’t have to wait until your kids turn to adults to start seeking fitness and healthy habits.

july 2017 | mychild

55

You can start observing their exercise and eating habits as early to get them on track throughout. Make the right choices for the family and ensure your child feels like part of the habit to bring the difference. You don’t need to push them into gyms and radical plans for weight loss. Here are a few tips to help you keep your kids fit and healthy. LEAD AS AN EXAMPLE It’s not easy to tell your baby what to eat and what not to eat if personally, you can’t stay away from that. Kids will always follow in your footsteps. If you want them to stay away from junk foods and other unhealthy snacks, then you should be ready to let go. If you wish your kids to be physically fit, be willing to hit the road every morning for a brisk jogging session. Gradually, you will attract them to your habits, and it will not be hard to instill a routine for them. As a parent, you should be their leader and not an instructor. EAT AS A FAMILY Eating together as a family lowers the risks of obesity and gives the family better diets. Eating at home involves cooking your meals, which makes it easy to control your menu. Another advantage of eating as a family is that kids get time to concentrate on eating over doing other things. This way, it will be easy to regulate the amount of food they eat. When they eat alone, the chances of overeating or under eating are high. MAKE TIME FOR SLEEP When kids are tired, they get moody and cranky. They may not have the energy to make right choices even with the simplest tasks as choosing water over a glass of soda. Therefore, it’s good to make a routine bedtime for the family. Good sleep lowers the risks of weight gain and other chronic diseases. When you sleep, your body releases healthy hormones and relaxes the mind for proper planning for the next day. Sleeping is critical for children and adults too. During bedtime, the brain can rewind of the day’s activities, which makes

56

july 2017 | mychild

it possible for the kid to remember what they learned during the day at school. MAKE EXERCISING INTERESTING It may not be easy to make your children work out. However, you can make them love it and feel it’s interesting. Instead of encouraging them to run, you can use activity trackers or pedometers to get them to track their steps. Encourage them to compete with you and see who takes more steps. This will be interesting and playful, but in the end, your kids will be physically fit and healthy before they know it. LET THEM PARTICIPATE As you formulate the healthy habits, it’s good to ensure that your children are part of the plan. Let them bring their diet ideas onboard. Evaluate their needs and wants for you to have a proper plan as a team. When they get home from school in the evening, let them choose on what they should do over sitting behind the TV screens. Teach them how to cook. This way, they will learn the importance of nutritional eating faster and easier. BE CONSISTENT Don’t just start on a habit and stop overnight. Be consistent; ensure that your kids get the right vitamins for healthy growth. Keep a record of what you have been able to achieve as a family every day. Come up with a family menu and balance the diets for the whole week. Continue with tracking your steps even when your kids feel like they can’t do it anymore. If you don’t give up, they will be motivated to continue since every kid wants to be the only winner. However, as you plan to keep your kids fit and healthy, you should not push them beyond their elasticity. Respect their choices. When the child is full, don’t force them to finish everything on their plates. Additionally, even if they don’t like those nutritious staffs, don’t ever be tired of serving them healthy meals.

How a Baby Can Change Your Relationship By Ronald Mccarthy Being with a partner is one of the enthralling yet complex experiences of your life as this journey is interspersed with romance, affection and an intimate feeling of togetherness. There is just the two of you, living blissfully with the one you love the most. This is probably the most uniquely satisfying periods of your life, however, everything in this world is suspect to change and the relationship between two partners cannot stand differently.

RELATIONSHIP

july 2017 | mychild

59

Having a baby is a consciously natural outcome of being together as a couple and welcoming this new bundle of joy would not just be an immensely exciting event of your life, but this will also mark a drastic overhaul in your relationship and how your roles stand redefined towards the baby and then towards each other. Most new parents are often stuck so much in taking care of their hapless newborn, who now is dependent upon them for every single thing related to his/her existence for the next couple of years that they let their relationship take a backseat, which shouldn’t ever be the case. Getting a baby definitely marks a change in your relationship, but that doesn’t mean that you need to downplay your own emotions. Fizzling out your spark will lead you nowhere. Your relationship certainly will undergo some huge changes after you have a baby and is characterised by certain interesting and trying periods, which you need to go through together as a couple, here are some of the most imminent changes from among those: YOU BOTH WILL BE DEPLETED OF PASSIONATE ENERGY One of the first things that happen in a relationship after a baby is born is that both the partners are now investing a large chunk of their time in taking care of the baby’s constant needs. You both will experience long sleepless nights and become embroiled in your efforts to maintain the baby’s health in a perfect way. However, this means that you get very little time for your relationship and whenever you even do get some time, you both are so depleted of energy that the passion fails to reignite, leading to

60

july 2017 | mychild

a loosening of the overall romantic bond over a period of time. To tackle this problem, you need to make sure that there is some time in the day when you are not knocked out, that you can give to your spouse or partner just like you did before the baby came. Maybe go for a romantic drive in the morning or even share an intimatel y passionate moment together in the evening, but do make sure that you keep investing yourself in this relationship to save it from going bad. YOU BOTH WILL NOT AGREE ON CERTAIN THINGS ABOUT PARENTING LEADING TO CONFLICT In any relationship, one of the partners is dominating while the other remains subdued but these simple character traits

can trigger conflicts when it comes to issues like parenting decisions. One partner may try to pass off as the expert, sidelining the other partner as a novice or an amateur.

have been Sally, girlfriend/wife/partner of Mark, but now you are also Mother Sally and simultaneously, he is also Father Mark from now onwards.

The best way, not to go through this sort of a situation is to develop a joint approach towards all issues related to parenting. Nothing is better than listening to what your partner has to say and it will help in keeping conflict away from your relationship.

The structure of a family differs increasingly from that of a partner-based relationship, along with your ideas and thoughts on how to have fun and how to act more responsibly among others. For e.g. previously, you might have thought that going for a movie date with your partner would be a great idea to spend your Saturday night but now, you might be prompted to go out on a camping trip along with your baby to give him/her the “Family Feels”. From now onwards, you would have to act as a more stronger person because you have your young one with a sense of security and safety in a wide variety of areas whether it’s comforting him/her during Shots or teaching them to ride the bicycle for the first time.

ADOPTING TO THE FAMILY LIFE Most partners believe that having a baby will deprive them of enjoying their sex life or restrict them from being more procreative with each other, however, the biggest change that comes, and probably the most important one, is in the changed and additional roles that you now occupy. Previously, you might

These changed roles contribute largely to your relationship and if people don’t accept them as they are, the relationship is bound to suffer. The child is now a contentious issue and any partner’s inappropriate behavior towards it might anger the other partner in a bad way. It’s best that you accept these roles as part of a more wholesome life and start giving your partner respect on doing it too. Being happy is the ultimate goal of any relationship and the relationship between your partner is no different. If you are happy with your partner, then you will also end up being good for your child as well. For a relationship to work, it should always be about “You” and “I” and now with a new “Him/Her” onboard. You should start keeping your ego aside and open up with compassion to embrace the joys that this beautiful change in your life will keep bringing to you forever.

PREGNANCY

Cravings During Pregnancy By Cara Barilla; Educational Columnist and Journalist Amid the westernized world we are accustomed to eating the wrong foods. Every second television commercial is based on chocolates, alcohol, chips and other junk food. Our minds are constantly under hesitation whether to give in to the unhealthy cravings and portion control and how to manage it. As our hormone levels are constantly imbalanced during pregnancy our habits tend to get off the mark from time to time. Here are some positive methods of recognizing what to do during a craving and how to substitute it with something more fulfilling and beneficial for not only yourself, more importantly your growing baby and the organs used to keep your baby growing healthy.

62

july 2017 | mychild

Drink plenty of water: water is the prime source of cleaning your body form negative toxins, refuels your system, keeps your body hydrated and stores natural energy. Your body’s cycle depends on water. Every time you have a craving, it may be your body telling you that you are dehydrated. Have two glasses of water to maintain energy. Educate yourself: Read about what your needs are and how much food you really need for your baby. Just remember that your baby’s stomach is only half the size of a fingernail. Reading the correct educational books to guide you into eating the right fruits, veggies, starch, proteins, calcium for your progressing stage is crucial to healthy baby development. Keep active: the more active you are the less time you have to read through your cravings. Cravings are just a sign of your hormones unbalancing and sometimes cravings aren’t symbolic. Try to get outdoors

and keep your body mind and wellbeing at an active rate to assist in your metabolic rate and natural healthy body production. Surround yourself with positive habits: be amongst like-minded healthy individuals who either have been through the same situation as you or are going through the same situation as you. It’s important to keep your mind focused and sometimes we may stumble across “baby brain” which assists in the impulse side of our brains development. Positively enhance yourself, your home and your surroundings with good foods, healthy activities, like minded friends and family and healthy snacks at home. Get connected with your local soft impact pregnancy yoga group, go for strolls around your local bay or park or go window shopping for the day. Keep your mind active and stimulated: think about that’s best for your baby health wise and portion wise. When you keep your body and mind active, your cravings will decrease and your mouth will less want to do the “eating motion” as often. Read more books, speak to more friends and family and get creative in the home to keep your mind balanced. By doing the proper research and speaking to your local health professionals, nutritionist, pediatrician, midwife, local support circle and family you will ultimately come to the conclusion that your body can take what it needs and put into your baby’s natural storage source. By storing unhealthy foods in your body, you are leaving less room for the good nutrients. Speak to your local gp and nutritionist to understand what is best for your height, weight, health circumstance and lifestyle. Each woman is completely different from the next, and by reading your bodies needs you will understand what healthy nutrients your baby is needing and the healthy nutrients that comes with it.

ADRIANA

‘CRAZY PEOPLE CHANGE THE WORLD’ I have wanted to be a business owner since I was a little girl. Sometimes I feel like it runs through my veins like I was born with it. I used to watch my parents run a successful business. I would sit in their office writing invoices to imaginary clients on my dad’s old invoice pads, and boss around imaginary people telling them to work harder and get me designs by Friday. As I grew, the games evolved and I began to swap invoices for drawing. I would draw everyday. Sketch after sketch, piling sketch book on top of sketch book - I was addicted. When I got a bit older and received the common “what do you want to be when you grow up” I always felt a bit stumped. I had a sense of what I wanted to be, but didn’t feel like I could explain it in one basic sentence. What I really wanted to do was change the world somehow, and to be a fashion designer. I know it’s an odd combo. Imagine the looks when that came out of my mouth! The responses were what you’d expect, things like there’s no money in fashion, the market is too saturated, it’s too competitive etc. My favourite comment of all was that ‘only crazy people change the world’ - well hey I’ll risk that! I saw this as a challenge, I wanted to prove these people wrong. My parents were fiercely supportive of my siblings

and I but also realistic and protective so these responses came from them too. Sometimes I would try put my sensible hat on. I considered becoming a psychologist because I was good with people but the thought of it didn’t set me on fire. I have my dad’s drive running through me, I need to be on fire. I Guess you could say that’s the start of Mickey Rose. Where the fire started, the hunger. Growing up, we had a holiday house in the sea side suburb of Anglesea (Victoria, Australia). It was an amazing, peaceful place. It was like the world slowed down when we were there. We made memories that will last a lifetime but of course I had no idea how special it was at the time. Rosetta was my mum’s best friend, and was family to me. We spent many weekends at Anglesea with Rosetta’s family and it was the highlight of my young life. Rosetta loved looking at my sketch books and would always ask to see them and check out what I was working on. I loved that. You can’t explain a person like Rosetta. She affected every person she crossed paths with and was infectious and inspiring. Rosetta was in the midst of battling breast cancer at the time. I remember one night in particular. Rosetta was looking through my most recent sketch book where I had drawings of wedding gowns and formal wear. She took the time to study every sketch, then looked up at a me very seriously and said, ‘You have to do this for a living”. I was only 15. Rosetta’s husband Michael, ever the realist, told her not to get my hopes up, that it was a tough market out there. But Rosetta was a dreamer. She turned to him and said, “Someone has to make it. Why can’t it be Adriana?’. That was balance right there, being realistic on the one hand but never losing that hunger to succeed. Today I still believe in that balance. The following year Rosetta lost her long fight to breast cancer. She put the Rose in Mickey Rose.

68

july 2017 | mychild

Unfortunately, Rosetta’s passing was not the last time someone close to me would be affected by cancer. When I was 18, life as I knew came to a gut wrenching stop. One morning I received the phone call that my Dad, Mick, had been diagnosed with cancer. Within hours of the original news, we found out it was life threatening and my dad was given two years to live. I thought, okay, I can handle two years, I can do a lot in two years. I used to repeat this to myself. That’s two more birthdays, two more Christmases, two years’ worth of advice and many more memories. I could do this. While my dad was sick, we spent a lot of time together, slowly soaking up life. He loved to walk. We would walk his neighborhood over and over, passing house after house, admiring the parks and the trees that lined the footpaths, stopping occasionally for my Dad to catch his breath. One of our favourite topics was discussing the details of the houses we passed on our travels and my lifelong dreams, my goals, my job, all the things I guess he wanted answers to before he left us in this crazy world without him. One afternoon sitting in hospital, we found out the cancer had spread through his entire body. With nothing positive to look forward to, I decided to talk to my dad about my business idea. I knew this would ignite him. My dad was a successful business owner himself, an entrepreneur in his own right. He started his first business in his early twenties with little money or formal education behind him. Having come from the third world country of Serbia, my dad was not even able to read or write when he started his business. But against all odds, he built an empire. My father was so passionate about my ideas, he wanted to know what I did yesterday to get it started, how could I do more, think bigger. He launched straight into where to get the money for start up, asked how much space I needed, questioned whether I should take over one of his offices. This was typical Dad. I felt like saying slow down, dude! I was just

making post chemo chit chat, gees! But I had to laugh – I could really see that this guy, my dad, he believes in me. I respected his zest for life with all of my being, but I couldn’t handle it just yet. I was dealing with too much to think about launching a business at the time. My dad was a man with a strong will to cultivate a great life and a man who loved his three kids fiercely and unwaveringly. A man who had given us nothing but his all since our beginning. And now he sat there at 47 years old, helpless in a way but with achievements people spend their whole lives striving for. It tore me apart, but I had to take his drive and put it into any idea I ever had for the rest of my life. Three months after the initial diagnosis my Dad was in hospital again but this time, it was the end. It had only been three months. What happened to our two years? What happened to two more birthdays, two more Christmases? This wasn’t OKAY. In an instant, life was ripped out from underneath me. January 23rd 2012 we lost my Dad. It was only three weeks before I turned 19. He put the Mick, in Mickey Rose. I was, Numb.

years I studied, I was constantly sick and riddled with anxiety from the loss of my Dad. After a long road and much work on myself, I learnt how to listen to my gut, and this gave me the answers I was searching for. It maybe even saved my life. I realised the industry didn’t have to be like this. I remembered that little girl who wanted to change the world. Could I put the two together? Could I be in the fashion industry and be the change I wanted to see in the world? Or do I need to give in to consumerism? Heavy I know, but I I take my role on this planet pretty seriously. Halfway through my course, the Rana Plaza incident happened. Rana Plaza was an eight story textile building that collapsed in Bangladesh in 2013, killing over 1000 workers. We watched the news coverage in class and I couldn’t fathom what had happened. These people were in the fashion clothing industry - my industry. They were mostly females, mothers to young families. This was not okay. This tragic story is not isolated, it is a reminder of what is happening every day to the people who sew the clothes we wear. These are real people, with families, with souls. Real people turned into slaves in the name of fashion. And we keep turning away from it.

My life, stopped. Days and weeks passed. I started my course at RMIT, Fashion Design and Technology, and immediately hated it. I could barely scrape myself out of bed and only just managed to study when I needed to. I can’t pick what I disliked most about the course, maybe I just had a negative attitude towards everything at the time. But the more I studied, the more I realised I really didn’t like the industry I was joining. This fast, cheap, vain, full of lies and fake pretences industry. I realised I had to make a choice. Do I conform to the industry’s current standards? It would be easier, I would probably make more money – or do I just leave it altogether? For the two

This shocking news confirmed my decision to focus on sustainability, not run from it. I knew I no longer loved women’s wear like I did growing up and I was in the midst of a women’s wear course that was slowly making me lose my passion for the industry. But I completed the course and learnt what I needed to translate into my own business. I saw a gap in the market for sustainable clothing for little ones. Kids fashion is fun, open minded, full of opportunity and playful - it’s everything I wanted in my life in that moment. BAM there was my answer. I finished my course when I was 21. At that time, children’s wear really excited me (and still does!). The innocence, the possibility,

the colours, the prints - I couldn’t get enough of it. One afternoon, I went to my Nonna’s house and began sewing. My Nonna was a seamstress and proficient in her art; I idolise her. We sewed bibs together and they were terribly cute. They were baby pink and blue with owls - enough said! It was a very different Mickey Rose to the one we have grown to know and love, but people loved it! Not only did they love it, they bought my clothes! I realised maybe I was onto something. I quickly outgrew the machine in my Nonna’s garage and needed help. My first sales to family members, family friends and friends of friends were all exciting but my first sale to a complete stranger was amazing! I started selling through a Facebook page, then small markets and the like. Every sale was exhilarating. I moved onto a small website, then more advertising and bigger markets. I couldn’t believe the momentum it was gaining. Instead of just bibs, I started to stock leggings too and the ideas kept growing. As the brand grew after that first year, I had some hard decisions to make. The first of my big decisions was to quit my day job. It was a big step in committing to this business being my future, not just a side project. Originally I thought the only way to keep things ethical was to do everything myself, but I was driving myself into the ground and it was time to outsource. I knew my “why” and I wanted to keep the brand true to my beliefs, but I had to think of a better way. My mind was a constant buzz. I asked myself how I could honour my Dad and Rosetta in this moment? How was I going to do myself and my story justice? Brand integrity has always been my priority. To me, this meant deciding how Mickey Rose was going to be sustainable, ethical, local and everything I wanted it to be, with the challenge of running it on a bigger scale. After much research, Mickey Rose now has a system in place, which is

70

july 2017 | mychild

completely ethical, local and organic. We also made the move to organic cotton in the first year and now work with only the highest quality 100% organic cotton. Mickey Rose is constantly evolving and my processes are always improving to allow the brand to grow. Mickey Rose is now made right here in a factory in Moorabbin, Melbourne, with a wonderful team of talented seamstresses who are paid fair wages. We use Australian organic cotton, which we screen print funky, unisex and unique prints onto. I work with a talented artist to design all of the prints on my clothes. We work for hours on end to achieve the most exclusive prints for each baby to wear loud and proud. The screen print is completed in a factory in Melbourne, that I can also visit and quality control myself. Our intimate team work closely from start to finish, creating fashion with a voice and a story that I am truly proud of. It’s hard to tell the story about my love for sustainable living without also touching on my personal journey and what living sustainably means to me. In high school, I did a lot of research for an essay I had to write on vegetarianism. I could not turn away from what I had discovered. At the age of 15, much to the dismay of my parents, I became a vegetarian. This set the tone for the rest of my life. For me, a huge part of not eating meat was the destruction it does to our environment. And this was my way to help. Almost 10 years on, I am still meat free but have also looked at other ways to live by my philosophy of being kinder to our planet and its living inhabitants. These days, I am very cautious of fast fashion, the tendency to disregard our wardrobe and constantly buy more. I still own and wear clothes from my teens and when buying, I always aim to choose well instead of more. Fashion is the second leading polluter and contributor to climate change - this has to stop. The clothing market is saturated with cheap items of clothing that the consumer

is quick to purchase and just as quick to disregard. People frivolously buy $10 tees and pay no mind to throwing them out soon after (it’s just $10 after all, right?). But I urge you to stop and think, what is happening to that real life person sitting at their machine making your $10 tee? How much of that $10 do you think they are seeing? Yes our environment is important, but so are humans. Slavery is still alive, it is happening to many of the people who sew the clothes on your back. I believe in good quality fashion, buy pieces that you are investing in, pass on your unwanted garments, believe in the money you spend. That’s what Mickey Rose is about, humans and the environment will always be our priority. We don’t always have the answer, but are striving in the right direction. We will always be made in Australia, sold for ethical prices and pay fair wages. I’ll admit, I have considered leaving the industry at times, but that has made me even more passionate to do it differently. It has cemented my belief in not conforming, but to make the industry better. I want to be part of a movement. This is what drives me, this is the fuel to my fire, this is the change I will make in the world.

our message with each mum, aunty, dad, etc that buys our product. We are proud of what we stand for and love creating a discussion with each purchase. Remember, when you buy our pieces, you aren’t just buying a product, but creating change, sharing a story. So, where to next? We are growing, our collections are constantly evolving and growing into more pieces. Keeping our signature FUNKY style, unique, bold prints, UNISEX and exclusive! But bigger than that, I want my story to affect change, to help create a global movement. I want the world to know my story and I want their choices to be affected by what they read and know about Mickey Rose. We will be part of the way if people reading this can start to think about their own lives, think about waste in general and use their fashion choices to tackle the bigger issue. And of course spread the word that we can all do and get through anything. In loving memory; to my Dad, Mick, who put the Mick in Mickey Rose. And Rosetta, who put the Rose in Mickey Rose. For that I’m eternally grateful. Stay Hungry.

Mickey Rose is my baby, but it is growing. I no longer shy away from the fact that I want to build an empire. An empire not based on greed, but on compassion and a belief that we can do better. We are always growing, always evolving, my goals are ambitious and I am always passionate for more. But some things will forever stay the same - my business integrity will not sway. This is also why we create transpersonal pieces, pieces that aren’t just based on the latest trends. We love prints you can wear years down the track as you pass them to your next child (and remember when you could pass clothes to your grandchildren?), because they are their own trend and high quality. You can find us where ever you are in the world, and we will stay true sharing

Discover the Mickey Rose difference today. Join the movement, join our tribe. x

REVIEWED BY APRIL DAVIS VTECH BABY LITTLE SINGING PUPPY

5/5

This oh-so-cute singing puppy can go wherever your baby goes. The three light up buttons will introduce your child to numbers and objects, all while playing fun melodies, while the cute design and portability of this toy makes it easy to attach it to cots and prams. Our verdict Your little singing puppy will help develop your child’s sensory and language development, as well as their motor skills. They’ll be learning new words and musical tunes without even realising it, as they’re exposed to different names for things and numbers. It automatically switches off too, so you won’t get stuck listening to the same tunes over and over again. They press the button, it plays, and then it stops – it’s that simple! RRP $16.95 – AVAILABLE FROM: BIG W AND ALL GOOD INDEPENDENT TOY STORES

JELLYCAT BASHFUL BEIGE BUNNY SOOTHER The perfect gift for a newborn, the Bashful Bunny Soother is specially made to ensure little ones can wrap their fingers around its tiny arms. Presented with a ribbon, the bunny’s hands are attached to the blanket, meaning the little blanket won’t get lost. The bunny is filled with polyethylene beads to make it sit upright. This toy is suitable for babies aged up to 12 months; however, it is a cute bed buddy for children of any age. Our verdict Soft to touch, super cuddly, and absolutely adorable, any baby would be lucky to have this bunny as a bed companion. RRP $31.95 – AVAILABLE FROM SEND A TOY / WWW.SENDATOY.COM.AU 94

VTECH KIDIZOOM SMART WATCH

4/5

If you can picture an Apple smart watch, but for kids, then you can picture the Vtech Kidizoom Smart Watch. Suitable for children aged four and over, the watch comes with rechargeable batteries, has three exciting motion games and a pedometer, a 3D clock face, alarm, stopwatch, timer and calendar, and eight games pre-installed, plus countless others that can be downloaded. The watch also has a voice recorder, camera, and video functionality. Our Verdict As much as we may want our kids to step away from technology and embrace the simpler things in life, there’s no denying how much this handy smart watch can teach your kids valuable skills that are a necessity in today’s world. Perfect for children learning to tell the time, the watch’s motion games and pedometer encourages children to move around and be active. While the camera and graphics on the screen aren’t quite up to the standards we’re accustomed to on our smart phones, the watch is of a decent quality and its features all perform as promised.
