MYCLUBMOOR A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
MYCLUBMOOR EVENTS 2014
“You can do anything you put your mind to…” that’s what my friend Dr. Pete says. How many of us have heard that before - on our school reports or from our parents and friends? He doesn’t finish there though, “but you know the difference between those that do it and those who just talk about it? It’s simple really - they do it.” Often it is making the first step that proves the most difficult.
1,600 local people with nearly £6million of debt problems. What’s more they are now also the coordinators of the North Liverpool Foodbank.
This first edition of MyClubmoor is full of people who have done it. I’ve been incredibly inspired by some of the local people we have met over the past few months. None of them knew what the result would be, most of them wondered if it would even work. They just decided that if they didn’t do it now, they never would.
When we talked to local people about what they loved about Clubmoor the answer was pretty unanimous – it’s friends, family and neighbours that make the place so special. We have a place filled with inspirational people and this paper is, and will continue to be, dedicated to telling their stories.
Take Su, she was so frustrated at the closure of the Walton Clubmoor Community Centre that she decided she would start a new community centre. Did she think that she’d have taken over the old Bridge pub and made the Liverpool Echo? I doubt it. Then there is Steve and Andrea McGanity who, eleven years ago, started a small charity from St. Andrew’s church. Last year they helped

Or even Ryan, one of the Unltd award winners, he knew that he wanted to run a sports business. He now employs eleven people and provides sports coaching to children all across Liverpool.
We also have £1million to spend over the next ten years. Our plan is to spend as much of that as we can to help people have a go. Whether that is a problem on your street that you’d like to see sorted out, someone in your area that you’d like to help, or even a new business venture that you’d like to try, it always starts with taking that first step.

WHAT A SUMMER “I HAVE TO SAY I HAD A FANTASTIC TIME, THE WEATHER WAS PERFECT, THE ACTIVITIES WERE SPOT ON, LOADS OF SMILING FACES AND EVEN A CLIMBING WALL TO CONQUER. WELL DONE TO ALL THE ORGANISERS!”
SPORTS DAY On 25th July we held a free sports day for children of different age groups in the area which was put together by MyClubmoor in association with Sports Alive. The day was a great success, despite the weather trying to dampen our spirits! Children took part in a number of activities designed to be fun but also to help them keep fit and active, including; parachute games, rounders and even hula hooping. In the afternoon, despite the weather taking a turn for the worse, we had plenty of young people come together for games of football, hockey and extreme Frisbee. Unfortunately the bad weather eventually got the better of us and we had to finish early; however it was still a great day that showed a lot of community spirit.

“WE HAD A FANTASTIC DAY, SPORTS ALIVE IS ALL ABOUT WORKING ALONGSIDE PARTNERS TO CREATE SAFER AND HEALTHIER COMMUNITES.”
This Summer also saw the first Clubmoor Community Fun Day take place; what’s more we had a very special guest attend in the guise of Lord Mayor Gary Millar. It was a fantastic day for the area with many residents, local businesses and organisations taking part including The Salvation Army, Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service amongst many others. The day was well attended with everyone engaging and taking part in a number of fun activities and events. The initial feedback has suggested that we make it an annual community event.
HEALTH DAY Over the Summer we had the MyClubmoor and The Bridge Centre Trust Health Day, which was attended by over 100 residents! We had a plethora of events and activities taking place as part of it thanks to all of the partners involved, including; Liverpool Mutual Homes, Diabetes UK, Slimming World and PSS. We also had a free BBQ at Grandison Allotments, where we gave away free herb boxes and ingredient bags as well as some healthy, but tasty, soup recipes. We’ve had some brilliant feedback from the event with everyone involved already looking forward to the next one. The feedback from this event has been excellent, with partner agencies asking for us to help organise another one. We have tried to work out just how many local people attended and from the freebies, flyers and food that we and other agencies gave away - it looks around 90-100 people attended throughout the day, which is fantastic.

ENVIRONMENTAL DAYS NOVEMBER / DECEMBER Bonfire & Christmas
There will also be on-going projects that will run throughout the year, these include Walk Club and environmental projects, as well as linking up with other organisations and community.
2
Residents of Clubmoor appreciate the importance of caring for our environment; and we proved this through two environmental awareness days over the Summer. The coffee morning at Grandison Allotments was a great success; plenty of residents came along and explored some of the great allotments we have. A few of the residents even had a hand at gardening themselves, planting some lettuces along the way! These gardening skills were then put to good use as the residents got their hands dirty in the gardens around St. Andrews Church; Clubmoor is definitely a lot greener now!
“IT WAS NICE TO SEE EVERYONE NETWORKING AND ENGAGING WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LOCAL ORGANISATIONS. THE EVENT WAS ALSO A GOOD CHANCE FOR LOCAL PEOPLE TO FIND OUT WHAT IS AVAILABLE FOR THEM IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY.” Karol Zwolinski - PSS

he awards range from £500 to help develop an idea to £5,000 for those who have a plan in place to turn their idea into reality; in exceptional circumstances UnLtd can award £15,000 to people that look to turn their idea into their day job. Without further ado please read further to find out a little more about our award winners:
SU CARSON Su Carson opened up The Bridge Centre Trust as a place for older people to go and opened the centre with a Do It Award from UnLtd. Su showed a great deal of courage when she came to us with her idea - we asked quite a lot of questions about how she’d make the centre pay for itself and she had answers that were good enough for us to back her!
CLEM PETITIT Clem Pettit runs the community garden at St Clements, like any garden it needs money spending on it from time to time to help maintain it. Clem approached us wanting to establish a community nursery selling plants to the local community and raising funds to keep the garden running – Clem’s passion for the garden and plan to create an income convinced us.
RYAN MANVILLE Ryan Manville had previously established his social venture with a Live UnLtd Award. Ryan came forward with a plan to grow his social business, build his impact locally & really make Sports Alive a success across Merseyside. Alongside sports provisions & mobile coaching, Sports Alive help and support the local community in offering training and employment through sports.
ALAN HUMPHRIES Alan Humphries wanted to teach children about the media and how television is made. A Do It Award has helped him start working with local schools to help them understand how to give their children the best possible start in media production.

JENNIFER BOWEN Jennifer Bowen dreams of establishing accessible childcare in Clubmoor, she struggled at points to get job interviews because she couldn’t find anyone to look after her children. She has used a Try It Award to test out half term activities for local children in Clubmoor and has ambitions to develop a business that offers vital support to local families.

In her spare time Nicky is a school governor for Roscoe Primary School and is an active member of the MyClubmoor board. More recently, she has become a Slimming World Consultant, through which she has been on a personal journey of her own not just with her weight loss but also with gaining confidence. T
he Bridge Inn pub was once known as a place for anti-social behaviour and gang related crime, however, now you are more likely to find neighbours coming together, children playing sport and even a spot of ballroom dancing. This reputation makeover is all down to local resident Su Carson, with the help of volunteer Jason Hagan. Calling upon her many years of experience of working within community centres, she has transformed what was a rundown pub into a thriving community centre, The Bridge Centre Trust. Su has been running a café for the last five years at Walton Community Centre, a place for residents to go for a bite to eat or have a coffee with a friend. However, when the centre closed down in early 2013 Su found there was nowhere else for local residents to go where they felt safe and comfortable. Su was frustrated with the upheaval of moving from place to place, having no place for residents to just sit and relax, so she decided she would open her own. “I just wanted to make a difference and turn something bad for the area into something good.” In April of this year, Su approached the pub owners of the Bridge Inn, Punch Taverns, and went on to secure a three year lease to open the building as a community centre.
6
The Bridge Centre Trust opened its doors for the first time on May 13th 2013 and is going from strength to strength. Offering a wide range of activities and events for local people, right in the heart of the Clubmoor ward, The Bridge Centre Trust is a great place for residents to visit and feel part of the community. Su’s aim is simply to create a strong sense of community and connect the residents within it by working together with local people and local organisations. With no funding to keep the centre running, Su pours every penny she gets from room hire back into the centre. She says; “Our centre is purely self-funded and the more the community connects with us, the more of a chance we have of surviving.” The transformation from pub to community centre according to Su was down to ‘good old fashioned community spirit’, this is very much evident in the people that volunteer and use the centre on a daily basis. Regular volunteer Dot Blackman spoke about the opportunities it has given her; “Coming to the centre gave me more self-confidence, Su has always made me feel welcome and it’s given me a new lease of life”. These are sentiments which are shared by regular visitor and resident Jim King who says; “It’s a pleasure to spend time here, having good food and drink among good friends”. The centre not only provides set classes, it’s a
place where people are welcomed and encouraged to engage with each other. It has an authentic community led feel to the place and everyone speaks highly of Su and the volunteers that all play an important role in the everyday running. Jason Hagan, a volunteer who has been involved from the very beginning, does a bit of everything. From running stalls to painting walls and even helping out in the kitchen, Jason has become somewhat of a pillar to the community, with residents finding him really helpful and often look to him as a friend. Jason says; “It’s great to be involved in such a brilliant project. I have always been made to feel welcome and the people that come here are friendly and always up for a laugh, I hope to be a part of the centre for long time to come.” From first meeting Su you can see almost immediately, the role she has carved out for herself in the community through sheer hard work and willingness to improve the lives of the people around her. Su is an inspiring person who puts others first and was brave enough to just have a go at something she has been thinking and talking about for a long time. Su and all the staff are very friendly, helpful and a pleasure to be around, what’s more they are a real credit to our ward and they should all be extremely proud of their achievements.

ON SUNDAY 21ST JULY, HUNDREDS OF CLUBMOOR RESIDENTS TURNED OUT TO SUPPORT MYCLUBMOOR’S FIRST EVER DOG SHOW. THE EVENT TURNED OUT TO BE A GREAT DAY OUT, NOT ONLY FOR CLUBMOOR’S DOG LOVING RESIDENTS, BUT THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE.
T
he event was organised amid growing concern about recent dog attacks. The local community was consulted about the matter and it became quite clear that responsible dog ownership was a high priority for most people. The purpose of the event was to encourage and teach responsible dog ownership techniques as well as giving dog owners the chance to celebrate their pets. Attendees were given free information about everything a responsible dog owner needs to know, from training tips to microchipping.
MyClubmoor is hopeful that the benefits of the event will be lasting and local residents will use the skills they have learnt about responsible dog ownership to make a positive impression on the local community. Lianne McGinnes said; “The event was such a fun, informative and successful experience that it is likely to become annual, so mark your calendars!”

With backing from the local community, MyClubmoor worked alongside Police Officer and owner of 5 dogs, Pete Atkinson to manage the show which was also supported by local businesses and organisations. Some of those that took part in the event included; Liverpool Mutual Homes, Liverpool City Council, PDSA, Dog’s Trust, Vets 4 Pets, D&J Pet Supplies and K9 Training, all of whom kindly donated to the event. The hard work of MyClubmoor staff and volunteers coupled with the generosity of the sponsors highlighted the importance of responsible dog ownership in a fun and engaging arena. K9 Training showcased simple and effective techniques to get the best behaviour out of even the most challenging of dogs.

Free pet waste baggies were given away by Liverpool City Council to help combat the growing issue of pet waste; an issue that residents have placed a high importance on. Dog owners also used the occasion to get their pets microchipped, ensuring that they are always able to keep an eye out for them at all times, with Liverpool City Council and Dog’s Trust on hand to help out. Microchipping has a number of benefits such as deterring dog theft, rapid return of lost animals and identifying animals in emergency situations. Neuter vouchers and information were given out by Vets 4 Pets. Each year, thousands of unwanted puppies are born and cruelly abandoned or needlessly destroyed; neutering is a simple procedure that helps put a stop to this and aids in the reduction of the stray dog population. The main event of the day, however, was of course the dog show. Dogs were presented in 13 classes from puppy to adult dog and were entered into categories including, Most Obedient, Waggiest Tail and Best Trick. The winning dog in each category won a voucher for Pets at Home for that well deserved treat, along with a winner’s rosette! Amongst this year’s winners is Charlie McCoy, who won first place in the Junior Handler Category for 7 to 10 year olds. Charlie’s mum Eileen said; “We had a fab day at the MyClubmoor Dog Show. My son won first place in the Young Handler section with our dog Mitzie. It was really well organised and we are already looking forward to next year’s show.”

CELEBRATE RECOVERY IN YOUR AREA: W
e live in a time when many people carry serious damage in their lives – maybe from past mistakes; or maybe from experiences where they have been a victim.
Often we can be left feeling that there is nowhere to turn for understanding or help; There is hope! Celebrate Recovery is a 12 step Christ-centred programme that is designed to help people take steps out of their problems and to ‘recover’ a life of freedom and peace, as God intended us to know.
MY CELEBRATE RECOVERY STORY: I am woman of mature years that has been plodding along in life. I have painted many smiles onto my face over the years to hide the pain of my younger years. About five years ago a person came into my life; they amazed me with their positive attitude towards life and themselves. They didn’t hide behind a mask, were upon I was constantly adjusting mine. This person’s past lifestyle had been colourful to say the least, and I was intrigued to know how my friend had transformed their life in such a positive way; and discovered it was through a 12 Step programme. I then heard the Church I attend, St Andrews Clubmoor, were about to start Celebrate Recovery - a 12 step programme, for the local community; and wondered if this could help me in a similar way to my friend. I started the program over 12 months ago, it wasn’t easy, each week stripped me of another painted smile, and my family also went through the highs and lows with me, in fact at times it was very stormy in my home and I felt totally shipwrecked. However my friend and new found friends at CR chose to walk beside me, let me cry when I needed to cry, listened to my ranting. As time went on I began to fix past life issues from the inside out, with the help of my Higher Power Jesus Christ. CR was having a very positive effect on my life. Soon I didn’t need to paint a smile upon my face, mine had been there all along, hidden under all the physical, mental and sexually abuse from my childhood. The team around me at CR, have become trusted people I can talk to, in a safe environment. We don’t try to fix each other just be there for all.
CELEBRATE RECOVERY : WHEN & WHERE? Tuesday evenings - 7:30pm - 9:30pm Thursdays - 11:00 am - 1:00 pm We run from September - July - (in school term time). Celebrate Recovery embraces people of all faiths and people groups. Everyone welcome, any time. The venue for Tuesday CR is: St Andrews Community Network , Roscoe Primary School, Ballantyne Rd Entrance, Clubmoor, L13 9AL.
WHO’S RUNNING THE COURSE? The programme is run by volunteers who have each worked through the CR 12 step programme; in order to overcome their own, ‘hurts, habits and hangups’. For more information contact: Brenda Noble: 07896417753 Office: 0151 270 3805 Email: brenda@standrewslive.org.uk Or visit the websites: www.celebraterecovery.co.uk ¦ www.standrewslive.org.uk

CAROL’S BLOG WELCOME TO CAROL’S BLOG. THIS PAGE IS ABOUT YOU, THE PEOPLE OF CLUBMOOR.
T
his page is where your letters will be published. If you’ve got something nice to say about the area, or even a complaint, write in and let us know and we will print a selection of them. If you’ve got any old pictures of the area, send them in with your memories and we will print them too. If you see a picture we’ve published that brings back your memories write in and tell us about it. In fact just write in and let us know what you think of the paper, if there’s something that you would like to see or something that you don’t like, we will read all the letters – even if I have to miss some of my favourite telly to do it! As you can probably tell from the title of this blog, my name is Carol. I’m a mother of two who lives in the area. My children both attended Roscoe School, where I am still on the governing board. I attend St Andrew’s Church and volunteer in St Andrew’s Community Network where I help out in the office a couple of days a week. My job is to keep you up to date with what’s been happening – craft fairs, firework displays, dog shows - I will try to write a review of what’s been going on in the area and will let you know what I thought about it. So if you’ve got something coming up that you’d like me to attend then get in touch and let me know and I’ll try to get out to you – there may be pictures so make sure your makeup is looking good, and that includes you women too! So what’s been going on this month that I’ve managed to get to? Well not a lot actually, I only found out about this page a couple of weeks ago and managed to miss a lot. I have, however, made it to the Craft Fair that’s been taking place at The Bridge Centre Trust every Saturday between 10am and 3pm. It’s just started but it’s building slowly to a very nice little fair with a good range of crafts. There’s everything from knitted items to scented wax to handmade cards, as well as homemade cakes and sweetie/baby baskets - and all at very reasonable prices! As it’s a weekly thing there will be more stalls as it gets closer to Christmas, so if you’re looking for an unusual gift for someone, go look at the craft fair and support local crafters in the Clubmoor area. There is always something brilliant going on around Clubmoor; I’m looking forward to seeing what you have to say about it!

BIG LOCAL CLUBMOOR Big Local Clubmoor looking out for you, discovering what the Clubmoor community wants to do. Where there is shortage that needs to be met, in an area with low incomes and many in debt. How can we make a difference to where you reside, input in your area that can give local pride. It may be an allotment scheme where people can go, to learn how to plant, take care, so their veg does grow. Or is it a place where people can meet, have a chat, have a coffee and a cake as a treat. A need to engage with our local ward, to expand our vision and discuss what’s to be explored. One million pounds the National Lottery did invest, we need to work out with you to decide what’s best. Expected to work ten years in Clubmoor, contact our facilitator, by phone, text, letter or knock at the door. Ballantyne Road is where we are based, at the back of Roscoe School, please contact with haste.
