Area residents and visitors can now test drive a new water park and some of their old favorites revamped for the opening weekend.

St. Peters is prepped and ready to unveil The Cove. Located next to Rec-Plex South at 5270 Mexico Rd., The Cove at St. Peters is a new type of outdoor aquatics park. It has been two years since The Cove, the result of the passing of Prop Q and the first-ever “water park style” outside aquatic facility in St. Peters, broke ground.

“The warm weather already has everyone getting that summer feeling, and if it continues, it should make for a great opening weekend,” Brian Bacyinski, Recreation Superintendent for the city of St. Peters, said. “The people are excited to see what they voted for and what they are going to get. I feel like we are going to give them something to be proud of.”

Catching everyone’s eye will be the waterslides where those of all ages and are at least 48 inches tall can take a trip down two intertwining waterslides that start from a 21-foot high platform. One is a 175-foot long open flume body slide and the other a faster 120foot closed body slide.

Bacyinski believes that the 3,200-squarefoot Activity/Sports Pool will help separate The Cove from other water respites. The Activity/Sports Pool is versatile with its basketball hoops and is ideally suited for water volleyball and basketball but can also be used for aqua aerobics, water walking, lap swimming and rentals.

has shade structures on each corner. The leisure pool has an elevated play structure with steps and multiple water features including a dumping bucket and a slide from a high platform. The rest of the leisure area includes underwater benches and peninsula barriers that separate activities from more relaxing areas for parents and families.

“It is going to be fun and exciting but not big and crazy,” Bacyinski said. “We may not be able – nor do we want to – compete with

all of the water slide parks. We feel we offer something for everyone.”

‘Summer’ from cover Wapelhorst and Blanchette Aquatic Facilities on Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Wapelhorst Aquatic Facility. After the ribbon cutting, there will be music, games and, of course, the new facility for all to enjoy. The event is free and open to the public.

“These are premier facilities that we are sure residents and visitors to our city will enjoy for many years to come as we continue the aquatics tradition,” Maralee Britton, director of the city of St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department, said.

The renovation of the Wapelhorst Aquatic Facility, at 1875 Muegge Rd. in St. Charles, along with the Blanchette Aquatic Facility, was possible due to the passing Proposition P in August of 2016. The residents approved a half-cent sales tax for Parks and Stormwater projects. Over the 15-year life of the sales tax, it will generate $21 million for the parks & recreation department. Of that amount, $18 million was set aside for the replacement of the Blanchette Aquatic Facility and renovation of the Wapelhorst Aquatic Facility. The remaining $3 million was allocated towards playground replacements, athletic field light upgrades and ball field improvements. St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith expressed gratefulness to the city’s residents for supporting Proposition P. “We are so excited to share the results of that effort with the opening of our new aquatic facilities,” Faith said.

And the ever-popular Alligator Creek, located at O’Fallon Civic Park, has recevied a facelift and expanded to twice its original size.

Among the new features are a modern bathhouse, a new concession stand, a longer lazy river with a zero-depth beach entrance, a new splash pad for kids of all abilities, a floating bridge and a new pool with a fun waterway that connects a larger pool with a newly-installed interactive water playground. Also, the pool will open an hour earlier each day at 11 a.m. The facility will be open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Experience an educational adventure at Homeschool Days Homeschooled children and their families are invited to enjoy a day of learning and exploring The Historic Daniel Boone Home in Defiance, during Homeschool Days, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., May 31 and Aug. 29. Jackson Road closed at South Point Prairie for approximately three months The St. Charles County Highway Department closed Jackson Road at South Point Prairie Road starting May 9 to allow for reconstruction and realignment of the intersection, as well as elevation changes and drainage improvements. When complete, the intersection will have improved sight distance and safer turns.

Traffic will be required to detour around the closure for approximately three months while the intersection is reconstructed. Local traffic will be able to access either side of the closure location, but no through traffic will be permitted. Motorists can access Jackson Road taking South Point Prairie Road to the I-70 South Service Road to Schaper Road to Jackson Road.

The highway department will post signs notifying motorists of the closure and detours, as well as use changeable message boards to notify residents of the closure and re-opening of the intersection.

This road project is part of a continuing effort by St. Charles County Government to improve the County’s road system for the safety of the travelling public. Safety Town scholarships given

by Kiwanis This is the third year the Kiwanis Club of O’Fallon has offered scholarships to children from families unable to pay tuition to attend the O’Fallon Police Department’s Safety Town program. Six children, ages four-and-a-half to six-and-ahalf years old, have received Kiwanis scholarships this year to learn valuable life lessons taught by the O’Fallon Police Department.

The children attending will be taught bus safety, recognizing police officers, gun safety, stranger safety and 911 use.

But this two week program doesn’t stop there. Next the students are introduced to an entire school gymnasium that has transformed into a model town that is just right for this age group. Equipped with traffic signs found on city streets, children navigate around their town using special pedaling tricycles. The police department tent was donated by the O’Fallon Kiwanis for their town several years ago and is a favorite among the children

attending. Along the way, lessons taught in the classroom are put to the test in real life scenarios.

Lessons learned there will be an influence on these children for the rest of their lives.

Long best summed it up when she said, “Through the support of the Kiwanis Club your members have helped potentially save the lives of children in your community.”

Boeing Employees help provide therapeutic dog for children with disabilities The Employees Community Fund (ECF) of The Boeing Company has awarded United Services for Children $3,000 to support the organization’s acquisition of a therapeutic facility dog.

Boeing Facilitator Keith Mack said ECF supported the plan because it aligned with the organization’s focus on early learning and preparing young children to be successful in kindergarten and beyond.

“This dog will not be a pet,” Mack said. “He will be an important tool to help children with disabilities make the most of the early intervention and therapy programs at United Services. This is an investment in the future of those children.”

United Services for Children is a nonprofit agency that operates a pediatric therapy and early intervention center in St. Peters. It serves children age birth through three years old, with outpatient therapy options for children up to eight years old.

The chocolate Labrador retriever, named “Chip,” will assist children with developmental disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome. United Services for Children obtained the dog through a collaboration with two O’Fallon businesses, The Pet Doctor and The Yuppy Puppy pet spa.

The Boeing ECF grant will help offset the costs of caring for Chip, who is undergoing an 18-month service dog training program administered by certified trainers at The Yuppy Puppy. Once training is complete, the dog will begin working fulltime at United Services for Children.

Denise Liebel, president and CEO of United Services, said the dog will perform a vital role in breaking through to children who, due to their disabilities, have become closed to the outside world. Some children will not talk or make eye contact.

City of St. Charles School District wins 2018 employer of the year award The City of St. Charles School District was the recipient of the city of St. Charles 2018 Employer of the Year award in the category of service.

The award was presented to the district by St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith at a luncheon held on May 1 at the St. Charles Convention Center. The luncheon was hosted in conjunction with the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized by the city of St. Charles as a leader in service,” said Dr. Jeff Marion, superintendent of schools. “Our goal is to reach, teach and empower every child who steps into our schools and we strive to provide our community with a top-notch educational institution.”

Zumwalt seventh grader wins Google Doodle contest DuBray Middle seventh-grader Abbie Chartrand is the Missouri winner of the 10th annual Google Doodle contest. From 200,000 submissions, Abbie is one of 53 state and territory winners selected to compete for the five finalists’ spots. The contest asked artists “What inspires you?” and this aspiring marine biologist showed the judges her underwater world in her doodle.

Art teacher Tiffany Scraper incorporates the doodle contest with her students each year, either as a classroom or art club activity.

On May 3, Google representatives were at DuBray Middle to surprise Abbie with the announcement, which her parents found out about ahead of time.

“It was so hard to keep it from her,” mom Michelle Chartrand said as she and her husband Dan left the assembly.

Michelle was carrying her new tote featuring Abbie’s doodle while Dan held onto Abbie’s new ChromeBook. Abbie was sporting the cool T-shirt she won featuring her award-winning doodle.

SCC and UMSL sign acceptance agreement for international students St. Charles Community College and University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) signed a conditional guaranteed acceptance agreement on April 5 for SCC’s international students to transfer to UMSL. Such an agreement ensures students who are moving from other countries are on a set track to transfer after SCC. Signed by Barbara Kavalier, Ph.D., SCC president; John Bookstaver, Ph.D., SCC vice president of academic affairs and student enrollment; Thomas F. George, Ph.D., UMSL chancellor and Kristin Sobolik, Ph.D., UMSL provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs, the agreement will benefit international students by giving them a clear pathway for transfer before they decide to leave their home countries for the opportunity to gain a college education in the United States.

tive international SCC students who have completed or will complete any articulated bachelor degree of SCC and UMSL, including an Associate of Arts, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Science, Associate of Fine Arts or an associate degree in an official major related program transferrable degree as defined by the Missouri Department of Higher Education.

“These conditional guaranteed transfer agreements are essential to international students who, along with their families, are spending their savings and enduring separations from loved ones and home,” said Virginia Guneyli, SCC professor of English and program manager for global studies and international student support services.

SCC officials are on track to introduce conditional guaranteed acceptance agreements with other four-year institutions in the coming months.

EVENTS May 28: Memorial Day ceremony

The St. Peters Veterans Memorial Commission invites you to ceremonies to honor American service members who gave their lives in the line of duty at St. Peters’ Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial next to St. Peters City Hall. This event is free and open to the public. Rear Adm. Peter J. Clarke, U.S. Navy, is scheduled to be the guest speaker. Other parts of the ceremony include a special laying of a wreath, singing of the National Anthem and representation of the Honor Guard as well as other veterans groups. The St. Charles County Veterans Committee and St. Charles City Veterans Commission will host their annual Memorial Day Program at 1 p.m. on the grounds of the St. Charles County Historic Courthouse/Executive Office Building at 100 N. Third St. in St. Charles. The event is free and open to the public. The program includes music provided by the St. Charles Municipal Band, welcome addresses by St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann and city of St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith, roll call of departed veterans and presentation of colors and wreath-laying ceremonies. June 1: Golf fundraiser

The Child Center, Inc. will host its annual Golf Classic at Incline Village Golf Course located in Foristell.

Whether you’re looking to improve your game, or new to the sport and want to learn the basics, this clinic is perfect for ages six and up. Taught by experienced players from the St. Charles County Disc Golf Club, the clinic combines the fun of throwing discs with the challenges of traditional golf. Participants are grouped by skill level and receive instruction on rules of the game, driving and putting techniques and strategies.

After experiencing all 18-holes, participants are served lunch and receive a commemorative disc to take home.

Good first week for Rascals The River City Rascals professional baseball team play in the West Division of the Frontier League with their home games at CarShield field in O’Fallon.

After starting on the road dropping the first two games, the squad has fixed a few problems and finds themselves one game out of first with a long home stand coming.

When the Rascals opened their home opener, you could tell they play better at CarShield field.

The opening day festivities ended with their fans going home after witnessing a 7-0 romp of the visiting Traverse City Beach Bums.

Since then, the team has won three of four games with some timely hitting and pitching.

At this writing, on the offensive side, infielder Stephen Kerr has been lights out tied with the lead league in hitting with a .500 average. His 10 hits have provided three runs-batted-in to go along with scoring four times. This goes along with walking four times and a stolen base.

On the mound, Scott Grist was given the ball for opening day at home and went seven strong innings. He did not allow a run giving him an earned-run-average of .000 and only allowed one hit and a walk to go with four strikeouts facing the minimum of 21 batters.

Asparagus Crust White Chicken Pizza

Recipe courtesy of Gina Ferwerda on behalf of the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board | Servings: 4 Ingredients: Asparagus Crust: 2 cups cut-up fresh or frozen Michigan asparagus, blanched 1 egg 2/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1 tablespoon lemon pepper seasoning White Sauce: 2 tablespoons butter 1/4 cup chopped leeks 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon flour 3/4 cup milk 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 cup cubed rotisserie chicken 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1/2 cup frozen green peas, thawed 1/2 cup cut-up fresh or frozen Michigan asparagus, blanched and seasoned with avocado oil and lemon pepper seasoning 1/4 cup chopped prosciutto fresh chives, for garnish fresh basil, for garnish

Directions: Heat oven to 375 F.

Bake 12-13 minutes.

To make Asparagus Crust: In food processor, puree blanched asparagus until smooth. In large bowl, mix asparagus puree, egg, Parmesan, mozzarella and lemon pepper seasoning until thoroughly combined.

Press asparagus mixture into circular shape on parchment paper-lined pizza stone or baking sheet. Place layer of paper towel over crust and gently press down to remove excess moisture. Repeat until paper towel is no longer absorbing moisture. Discard wet paper towels.

To make White Sauce: In saucepan over medium heat, cook butter, leeks and garlic 3-4 minutes. Slowly whisk in flour and cook 1-2 minutes. Slowly add in milk, continue whisking and cook until thickened. Add Parmesan then remove from heat and set aside.

Pour white sauce over partially baked asparagus crust and top with chicken and mozzarella. Add peas, asparagus and prosciutto. Bake 5-8 minutes, or until cheese is thoroughly melted. Garnish with fresh chives or basil.

Is 2018’s ‘Overboard’ a reboot or sequel?

Imitation, as the old saying goes, is the sincerest form of flattery, at least in Hollywood. Reboots and sequels have become commonplace as studios find inspiration in classic films. “Overboard,” a romantic comedy starring Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez, is the latest cinematic retread to hit theaters. The story is the same as the 1987 original, right down to the setting of Elk Cove, Oregon.

The only difference here is a gender swap: Faris plays Kate, a hard-working single mom who runs afoul of the obscenely wealthy Leonardo, played by Derbez. After cleaning the carpet on his yacht, Leonardo insults her and pushes her off the boat. Later that day, he falls overboard and loses his memory. After he washes up in Elk Cove, Kate sees a real chance for serious payback.

In the 1980s, Garry Marshall directed the original, which starred real-life partners Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell as Joanna and Dean. It was a funny and touching film with plenty of heartwarming moments.

Amnesiac Joanna becomes a great mother to Dean’s rowdy sons and sees the good side to the man claiming to be her husband. They fall in love, of course, just before her memory returns.

Is this “Overboard” a sequel or a reboot? In an early scene, a doctor tells Leonardo’s sister that he saw a pretty blonde woman with a case of amnesia like Leonardo’s in Elk Cove back in the 1980s. That would indicate a sequel, especially since director Rob Greenberg recreates many key scenes from the original.

To his credit, though, Greenberg puts as much heart into this one as Marshall did back in the day. Leonardo is pretty much a playboy until he

falls overboard. A vengeful Kate makes him take a day job and, when he returns home exhausted, he has to cook dinner for the whole family. Surprisingly, Leonardo adapts to the hard work, exhausting schedule and all the chores while becoming a model husband.

Even with the similarities, this “Overboard” actually is more satisfying than the team-up of Hawn and Russell. Anna Faris does a great job as Kate, who works multiple jobs while studying to be a nurse. Eugenio Derbez gives Leonardo some depth and heart after he falls overboard. He even demonstrates protective instincts around Kate’s daughters, keeping the oldest away from boys who act like he used to on the yacht.

It’s too easy to dismiss the 2018 “Overboard” as just another reboot since the stars and director have managed to make it something special.

If it’s still in theaters over the Memorial Day weekend, give it a chance.

Moore On Life Recently, the state of Utah signed a law to become the first in the country to protect freerange parenting. This style of child-rearing encourages kids to put down their handheld devices, get up off their squishy back sides and see what lawn feels like. It demands they maneuver themselves across the street to see if they can safely make it back home without the aid of an Uber driver or Google Maps; both apps on their handheld devices, which have been taken away.

Free-ranging first became a problem after two young children were caught walking home alone from a park in Maryland. They were picked up by the police and held by Child Protective Services and their parents were charged with neglect.

Neglect? For walking home from a park?! Oh, when I think of my “tortured” childhood. My mother would be behind bars for life serving hard labor for her crimes.

Here’s how summer began in my neighborhood: The sun came up; the rooster crowed; the doors down the street simultaneously opened. Children were deposited on the porch and the deadbolts all clicked behind them at the same time. We were not allowed back in until the North Star shone.

Yes, the occasional door opened to fling out a cold wiener and a cheese slice for lunch. If a dire emergency occurred, such as a protruding bone, a Band-Aid would be tossed out the window, other than that, we were abandoned to fate.

Fate included going to the swimming pool unattended and without proper certification. Being taught by an expensive swim instructor at some

swanky community center was unheard of and a ridiculous waste of resources. Our swimming pool was an irrigation canal. Kids learned how to sink or swim on their own without costly documentation. It saved our moms lots of money, which they could spend on extra packages of cold wieners for dinner.

We built forts out of crates from the nearby cannery in fields marked “no trespassing;” we rode our bikes to parts unknown until our calves and backsides were tighter than steel railway ties, which we flattened pennies on as speeding freight trains flew by inches from our scalps. We frolicked in community parks unaware that unaccompanied playtime was unlawful and hazardous.

If my mother were alive today and told about the Maryland incident she would have been stark-raving livid and had this to say, “You’re telling me that today they’ll haul your kids away for free if you just leave them outside. I was totally cheated!”

Home on the free-range
