The St. Charles County Police Department’s Community Camera Program asks residents and businesses to register their privately owned video surveillance systems By Brett Auten The St. Charles County Police Department needs your help to help others. Home or business outdoor video surveillance systems are becoming more and more common. A wide array of companies have turned the home security system industry on its head by allowing homeowners to shun traditional professionally-installed security systems by creating smaller devices and shifting the task of securing houses from traditional companies and giving the option to take matters into the homeowners own hands. With remotely accessible features, high-definition video streams, motion detec-
tion, cloud recording and an intercom, the options are endless. Video doorbells are more commonplace and serve as the gateways to the do-it-yourself home security game, and have grown to become one of law enforcement’s most useful investigative tools. Now it is a threat to lowly criminals that they are being monitored and recorded. While video surveillance may deter criminals from breaching your safety, it is also helpful in investigating crimes that may happen in your neighborhood. The St. Charles County Police Department is asking residents and businesses, across its jurisdiction, to assist in keeping neighborhoods safe by registering their privately
owned video surveillance systems with its Community Camera Program. The process is more about time saving than big brother. When crimes occur, surveillance systems will sometimes record information that can generate strong leads and vital information for investigators. The program registration list will help these investigators determine whether any homes or businesses in the area of the crime have video surveillance footage.
