The Leach Pottery Fireplace

‘‘

Throughout its long history, the Leach Pottery Fireplace has been the spiritual heart and gathering place of the workshop. The fireplace at morning and afternoon crib breaks was the stage where all the drama, discussions, and decisions were played out. The key players; Bernard and Janet Leach together with Bill Marshall helped form my thoughts and ideas, and laid the groundwork for my future in pottery. They were the inspirational characters, that led me and others to regard pottery to have creative significance and for me the fireplace will forever be that inspirational space where I nurtured and formed my ideas about pottery.”

Robert Lenkiewicz Lenkiewicz took over 20 years to paint a 40ft mural on the entire circumference of the Round Room. He died before it was completed, however it never fails to stun the onlooker.

Lady Anne Bonfoy Painted by Joshua Reynolds in 1754, Bonfoy was the eldest daughter of Richard Eliot and grew to become much admired with a reputation for high fashion.

Hester Booth Here with her slapstick dressed as a harlequin, Booth was England’s first ever ballerina.

Reynolds’ Seascape This incredibly rare piece is a seascape by Joshua Reynolds. Famed for his portraiture, it’s highly unusual to find landscape paintings such as this one of Plymouth harbour.

NEW FINDS DERYA ERDEM The semi figurative paintings of Cornwall-based artist Derya Erdem find their power in the artist’s mastery of composition and an uplifting palette of primary and secondary colours. Reflecting her own personal, cultural and social experiences and exploring the relationship between human nature and the environment, Erdem uses various materials and combines techniques such as layering, washing, erasing and scratching to tease abstract shapes from the lucidly beautiful surface of her canvas. The result is a collection of vibrant, emotionally charged works which demonstrate the hypnotic nature of brilliantly executed abstract painting. www.newcraftsmanstives.com

JENNY AYRTON New to the arts scene, recent Plymouth College of Art graduate Jenny Ayrton’s unique works are amongst the most interesting to come out of the South West in the last year. Having recently won the R&A Collaboration award at designermaker event Made London, as well as having been selected for the prestigious Crafts Council Hothouse 4 scheme, Ayrton’s original pieces capture miniature wonderlands in molten glass. Encasing delicate metal drawings within blocks of clear and coloured glass, her delightfully domestic sculptures are inspired by familiar, everyday scenes, and take a refreshingly childlike view of the details that fill our modern lives. www.newcraftsmanstives.com

THEN & NOW Portscatho Art Colony

F

ollowing the formation of the Portscatho Society of Artists in 1984, this small and particularly beautiful Cornish fishing village became a desired destination for a number of talented artists. It can now be correctly described as an art colony. With some artists present and instrumental in the foundation of the society and others joining along the way, the art colony in Portscatho has provided a community for over one hundred individuals. It has created an environment where painters can enjoy the company of fellow artists, supporting each other while developing their own personal styles and techniques. Artist and author Chris Insoll was key in the formation of Portscatho’s art society and he continues to play an integral role in the promotion of Cornish art. In 1985 he opened the Gallery Portscatho, renaming it the New Gallery following its relocation in 1997 to where it is today, as a hub for the society’s artists. The gallery is artist-run, providing exposure and an income to members and the studio is still used on a daily basis by resident and visiting artists. With the Portscatho Society of Artists celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, the art colony continues to provide a successful platform for artists across the West Country. “It is all about supporting artists and helping people to return to art after working in other disciplines,” said Chris Insoll. “The colony is a real community - visiting artists can stay here, meet the painters and see their work.” While many professional artists call Portscatho home, others have stayed briefly before continuing their artistic endeavours elsewhere, but all of them have been integral to the diversity of Portscatho’s art scene today.
