Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends, It was another excellent year at Country Day. We concluded the fiscal year on June 30, 2012, having received $1,876,608 in gifts. Your contributions supported the operating budget, construction of the Gordon R. Wright Tennis Complex, renovations to the Lower School, endowment growth, and efforts to attract and retain the best and brightest students and teachers. Each of these areas is vitally important to the education of our children, and I am grateful for your support. I want to thank the chairs of the Annual Fund for their dedication and hard work: Gordon ’85 and Susan Wright; Grandparent Committee Chairs Kitty Strauss and Jim and Allison Zimmerman; Faculty and Staff Chairs Peter Fossett ’80, Ann Gardner, Nate Johnston, and Ashley Ward. Also, I want to acknowledge Steve Schwartz ’80 for his ongoing work with the Development Committee. Cincinnati Country Day School has tremendous momentum. Our graduating seniors will be attending some of the finest institutions of higher education in the country, and in turn, our alumni continue to stress that the preparation they received at Country Day equipped them for success in all walks of life. Enrollment continues to grow, and we have waitlists in several classes. Our students regularly garner state and national recognition in competitions including the National Merit Scholarship Program, Middle School National French and Spanish exams, and the Scholastic Awards for visual arts. Our community and mission are strong, fueled by the generosity of the many loyal donors whose names are listed on these pages. I often say that I have the best job in America. I am proud of Country Day’s direction and priorities. We are dedicated to creating a joyful learning environment that is intellectually challenging and prepares students to be creative and innovative leaders. Thank you for all that you do for Country Day. Your commitment is deeply valued and appreciated. Sincerely,

Robert P. Macrae Head of School

RICHARD O. SCHWAB MIDDLE SCHOOL RESOURCE FUND Richard O. Schwab ’67, Country Day Middle School Head from 1986-2006, was beloved by his faculty and students and greatly admired for his keen understanding of the adolescent mind. As Head of the Middle School, Dick focused on creating a climate of respect, cooperation, and collaboration. He believes a division head sets that environment, and he worked hard during his tenure to nurture such a culture. Dick enjoyed watching the students grow and develop. Students would often stop in to visit Humphrey and Webster, Dick’s beloved dogs. Dick also had a special knack for finding the right teacher to fit the Middle School atmosphere. Theresa Hirschauer, Head of the Middle School and a former member of Dick’s faculty, explains, “He had a great talent for discovering a teacher’s passion. He often looked past their degrees and more at the human interest side of a person. When introducing new faculty members to the community, he never recited a resume, but instead shared an interesting story or fact about the teacher.” Dick

constantly encouraged his faculty to seek professional development and growth. He led by collaboration and realized quickly that if you have a good idea, other people will own the idea. To honor Dick’s leadership of Country Day’s Middle School, family and friends joined together to create the Richard O. Schwab Middle School Resource Fund in conjunction with his recognition as the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus. The income from the endowment fund will be used to benefit the faculty and students in the Middle School, and help them find their passions, grow professionally, and build community.

MARTHA W. BURTON ENDOWMENT FUND FOR MODERN LANGUAGES The Martha W. Burton Endowment Fund was made possible through the generosity of Crompton (Hub) Burton ’72, Leland Burton ’70, Stephen Burton, Madeline Burton, McKenzie Burton and their extended family. The fund was created to honor and memorialize their sister and aunt, Martha, Country Day class of 1979, and her lifetime passion for the study and acquisition of language. “We are truly fortunate to have an opportunity to remember Martha in such a special way and at such a special place,” says her brother Hub. “Her experience at CCDS kindled a lifelong curiosity and love of learning that encompassed not only her gifts in language, but also her dedication and commitment to her research into cognitive function. The opportunity to recall that every year with the awarding of the prize and supporting an area very dear to her is a fitting tribute and we sincerely appreciate the interest of Country Day in joining with us to honor her memory.” The endowment fund seeks to ensure that future Country Day students continue to benefit from a curriculum that includes a long and rich tradition of language study, and to support and enhance the teaching and learning of foreign language. The annual income of the Fund will be used to assist the operations and growth of the Modern Language Department at Cincinnati Country Day School by providing funding for faculty development, software, and financial assistance for students who wish to participate in a language immersion program.

has demonstrated a passion for the French language and excels in all areas: speaking, listening, reading, writing, as well as having a knowledge and respect for the diversity of francophone cultures.

CAPITAL GIVING CAPITAL BUILDING FUND LOWER SCHOOL RENOVATIONS Twelve years ago the Country Day campus received a make-over with the addition of the new Upper School building, whose design exemplified the school’s ambition to achieve academic excellence and to create a stronger educational community. Patiently waiting in the wings has been the Lower School, one of the last reminders of what the old Country Day campus looked like. This summer we embarked on Phase I of a $2,500,000 project to refurbish and expand the Lower School. Phase I included improvements which consisted of: upgrades to the heating and cooling systems, roof, windows and doors. These improvements will make the building more energy efficient. Phase I cost approximately $1,000,000.

place that beckons you to come in and discover all that there is to learn.” Country Day believes the Lower School facility should mirror the excellence found within and that these improvements will allow the School to maintain its position at the forefront of Pre-K through high school education. We extend our sincere thanks to the families, individuals, and organizations listed here who have contributed or pledged $1,300,000 to date to the Lower School building campaign.

Country Day’s vision for the Lower School includes an addition and an entrance. An expanded canopy at drop-off and pick-up will create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Parents and families will find it easier to build community in a new commons that will house a modern library and new dynamic learning spaces for individuals or groups. These design elements will connect the Lower School more directly to the 62-acre campus, and the link to natural settings will serve as inspiration for newly relocated science and art classrooms. Also, the playground will see changes: native plantings and natural features, along with traditional play structures will be incorporated into a natural playscape design. These renovations, planned for Phase II, will be built in 2013 after the project fundraising is complete. Head of Lower School, Jennifer Aquino, explains her vision for the project: “We want students and families to come upon a place that is both welcoming and intriguing. We are creating a learning environment where the students’ outside world is brought to life within our walls, a

ANNUAL GIVING At Country Day, students learn to: Seek Answers. Find Passions. Serve Others. Live with Integrity. And as these traits are formed, children grow—in confidence and character. They become curious thinkers, ready for the next chapter, the next challenge, the next year. They are ready for any future. To continue this tradition of excellence we count on Country Day parents, alumni, grandparents, past parents, faculty, staff, and friends to help us by investing in CCDS. The simple truth: we cannot do this work alone. Annual gifts support is at the heart of the Country Day experience. This year with the efforts of our Annual Fund chairs Susan and Gordon Wright ’85 and our volunteers, our donors generously gave over $781,000 to the Country Day Annual Giving program. We are grateful for their tireless work to ensure our students have the best Country Day experience possible. We believe every student of promise should be able to join the Country Day community. We believe CCDS students are so prepared because our faculty are the very best. It’s critical that Country Day continue to attract and retain them. We believe we have developed unrivaled and transformative educational programs, both intertwined with and extending beyond the classroom. We believe this is all possible because of our donors. Each gift helps support our school’s success. We thank you for making this special investment.

Cincinnati Country Day’s commitment to excellence is made possible by the ongoing kindness of our parents. Their generosity helps sustain a rigorous academic program, a faculty dedicated to teaching and scholarship, the beautiful campus and the opportunities for our students to engage in leadership and community service. With the help of our volunteers our parents raised over $486,000 for the CCDS annual giving program. What tomorrow’s world holds for our children is uncertain, but we do know that navigating it will take an inventive, insightful mind. The enthusiasm and dedication of our parent body helps ensure Country Day students are provided with the best tools possible to prepare them for college and beyond.

KYLE KISTINGER ‘12 At the state meet in Columbus on June 2, 2012, Kyle Kistinger completed his illustrious track and cross-country career at Cincinnati Country Day, finishing 6th in the one mile.

Top Distance

Runner in

Country Day’s

History

University, Emory, Washington and Lee, and Colgate. He chose Williams.

Kyle’s achievements beg the question—how did he do it? There are the obvious explanations—genetics, coaching, and parenting. However, anyone who has watched Kyle race knows he possesses a huge heart. After winning the regional mile with a time of 4:19, he returned to the track forty minutes later, in 90 degree heat, and qualified for the state meet in the two mile. Kyle and one other runner were the only two who qualified for the state meet in both the mile and the two mile. His determination, hard work, and sheer love of the sport shone through during these races.

2nd Team AllHonors Here is a snap shot—a partial run down of Kyle’s stellar record at Country Day: Over the past two years he shattered two twenty-plus year-old school records and one thirty-year record by running 1:58 in the 800, 4:18 in the 1600, and 9:43 in the 3200. He earned second-team All-American status in the 800 and 1600. Kyle won three individual league championships during the 2012 track season in the 800, 1600, and 3200. By winning the 1600 and 3200, Kyle led the CCDS team to its first district championship in fourteen years.

Academic

Performance In cross-country, Kyle was selected as the 2011-12 Cincinnati Enquirer Division II-III Runner of the Year. His 16:14 at the 5K state cross-country meet was the best in the school’s history. Kyle served as the team captain for both the cross-country and track teams during his sophomore, junior and senior years’ while maintaining an honors academic average. His hard work paid off as Kyle was recruited by Williams, Amherst, Washington

18

WILLIAMS

COLLEGE Does Kyle’s work ethic hold the answer to his success? Inquiries into his training reveal that there are no shortcuts. A conservative accounting of Kyle’s junior and senior training regimen shows that he logged at least 3,500 miles. The hills of Camargo, Spooky Hollow, Cunningham, and Shawnee Run were Kyle’s training grounds. Still, the key question remains unanswered— why all the running? Putting family, coaches, and friends aside for a moment, Kyle, alone, reached an unwavering and non-negotiable decision about pursuing excellence. Refusing to accept mediocrity, Kyle possesses the rare mix of innate talent, determination, and strength of character that are the essential qualities behind any notable human achievement. By setting his sights high, Kyle has established a record of excellence that future Country Day athletes will look at, marvel over, and seek to emulate. As he leaves Country Day for Williams College, what does Kyle want for future Country Day athletes? Why of course, to set their sights on beating his records!

American Cincinnati

One of Kyle’s most memorable Country Day races occurred during his junior year in May of 2011. Kyle lined up for the league championship against the defending state crosscountry champion, Summit Country Day senior Colin Cotton. The gun sounded and for the next three quarters of a mile neither runner yielded an inch. As they came down the stretch, there was strain on both their faces. Then over the last ten meters, Kyle dug a little deeper and crossed the finish line inches ahead of Colin. Kyle secured the league championship and his first victory over his worthy rival.

CLASS OF 2012 CLASS OF 2012 CONTRIBUTED $500.25 The Class of 2012 (pictured below) chose Cincinnati Country Day as one of its senior service projects. Over a period of several weeks, various seniors spent their lunch and free bells planning and organizing a fundraiser. As a result the class met their goal and donated $500.25 to Country Day. We are thankful the seniors chose to give back to their school and to support the Country Day community.

Dorian Bell ’12

Many alumni can point to the countless opportunities they found while attending the Cincinnati Country Day School. Dorian Bell from the Class of 2012 took full advantage. With her determined and can-do personality, Dorian found an identity for herself in academics, athletics, and in the Country Day community. Academically, Dorian has shown that hard work can go a long way in reaching a goal. She began her Country Day math career in Algebra I, but was intent on tackling Calculus by the start of her senior year. To achieve her goal, she took six math classes in four years, including AP Statistics. At the start of her senior year she had reached her goal and was sitting in the calculus classroom. Her AP Calculus teacher Greg Faulhaber describes Dorian’s motivation: “Dorian

OHIO

STATE

UNIVERSITY ENGINEERING continues to amaze and impress me with how far she has come in her four years at CCDS. Dorian works hard because she wants to understand.”

26

She truly is a student who has passion for learning. Understanding what it means to take in everything Country Day has to offer, Dorian exemplifies how a high school education can transform a student. Her determined work ethic has worked for Dorian outside of the classroom as well. On the track team she started as an alternate, but by her junior year she was awarded a

spot on the 4x100 relay. For the two years that Dorian was on the relay team, they made it to the state meet. At the 2012 regional meet, Dorian’s relay team broke a school record with a time of 49:39. Dorian’s work ethic and determination drives her success. She knows what it means to set a goal, and then go out and find a way to achieve it. Every graduate of Country Day knows the importance that the school places on being an active member in the community. Dorian found an opportunity in this area as well, again in her own way. She has always had a strong interest in knitting, and decided to use this passion in the service of others. During the spring of her senior year she started the charity “Everyone Has a Head.” Its goal is to donate hand-knit baby hats to clinics around the Cincinnati area. Also, to raise money for the March of Dimes, Dorian and her friends sold knit hats at Country Day. Dorian’s imagination and initiative exemplify how far an idea can go. Dorian’s Country Day career can be measured in opportunities seized not only for herself, but with others so that they might have a similar experience. Dorian was awarded The Bailey Ross Memorial Scholarship

Joshua Motley ’12 Catherine Smith ’12 Country Day’s award-winning arts department offering programs ranging from theater, photography, music, to visual arts has seen many students contribute and showcase their talents over the years. Two members of the Class of 2012, Josh Motley and Catherine Smith, are among many who have displayed their talents in recent years in Country Day’s Drama Department. Josh and

THE ARTS Catherine have been involved in many productions, including most recently the leading roles in this winter’s musical, “The Music Man.” These two new alumni exemplify Country Day’s commitment to enrich each student and help them reach their full potential in any area of interest. Since coming to Country Day as a freshman, Josh Motley has been involved in the arts at Country Day. Over his high school career, Josh developed his interest in the performing arts by participating in the band and choir along with sharing his singing and instrumental abilities in talent shows and other Upper School events. Josh’s greater interest has been in acting. He has had roles in ten plays including “Once Upon a Mattress,” “The Crucible,” and “Seussical.” Most recently he commanded the stage with the lead role of Harold Hill in this winter’s “The Music Man.”

Josh is a great example of a Country Day student developing and strengthening his many talents which will prepare him for any world. Upper School Director of Drama and Vocal Music Mark Femia describes Josh: “I have truly enjoyed Josh’s energy and enthusiasm when it comes to the performing arts here at CCDS. Never

one to back down from a challenge or opportunity, he has jumped into every concert, play and performance opportunity with 100% dedication and drive, and has helped to show other students just how much fun there is to be had in the arts at Country Day.” This fall, Josh will continue to develop his talents at Brigham Young University. Another electrifying member of the Country Day arts community has been Josh’s fellow classmate Catherine Smith. Also entering Country Day her freshmen year, she has been involved in most of the school productions, including taking the female lead role, Marian Paroo, alongside Josh in “The Music Man.” At the end of her senior

Not only have Josh and Catherine benefitted from the arts community over their high school career, but they have also helped to make it what it is today. Representing the school in arts competitions and

year, Catherine made her directorial debut with the production of “The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged).” Catherine also reached the semifinals of the Overture Awards competition in the Vocal Music and Musical Theater categories. “I admire the way Catherine is able to approach an artistic opportunity with a mixture of ability, adventure and aptitude. She brings so much to the table when it comes to training and experience, but she is always ready to either learn something new or share what she knows with others,” comments Mr. Femia. “She is definitely a personality made for the stage, and her eagerness to learn and create is contagious.”

ANNUAL EVENTS TOTAL $170,310

COUNTRYDATE Thank you to the entire CCDS community for supporting A Very CountryDate. It was an exciting evening chaired by CCDS parents, Tracy Ramirez and Lori Smith. Dinner was catered by La Petite Pierre, and the live auction was conducted by local auctioneer, Susan Johnson. The evening also included a silent and a super silent auction as well as an after party featuring disc jockey “Hey Mr. D.J.”. During the live auction a video created by parent Ainsley Kellar was shown highlighting some of Country Day’s talented teachers. This set the stage for the “Raise the Paddle” portion of the auction, which raised $30,000 for faculty resources. View the video by visiting the link below. Volunteers spent countless hours working to make A Very CountryDate a success, and we would like to thank everyone involved. For a list of donors and photographs of the evening, visit www.countryday.net/go/CountryDate.

DIVAS AND DARLINGS The annual Cincinnati Country Day School Divas and Darlings event took place at the Kenwood Country Club on Wednesday, November 9, 2011. Once again the event proved to be a great success. Chaired by Linda Pruis, the event hosted 200 women from the Country Day community. Twelve local vendors were featured, and guests had the opportunity to browse and buy as they enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and great conversation. A highlight of the evening was a raffle featuring items donated by each vendor. The evening concluded with a delicious dinner and an entertaining fashion show featuring clothes from the Wardrobe, Sara Benjamin’s, Monkee’s of Madeira, and La Silhouette.
